I don't comment on anything. Im conserved like that. But here I see a guy teaching us literally how you would teach something to someone with absolute zero background in it. No crappy long openers or agitating background music. No overwhelming starters showoffs. Just showing us what this software can do. Im watching this series and learning a lot about different tools available in the software. In the meanwhile I try to imagine their potential. I know I've got a long way to go but with this series, I am hopeful that I can create something sensible and start putting pennies in my pocket which have been empty for a long time now. I wish I could give back in some way for proving us with in legendary source for free. But as of now please accept my humble appreciation
I gotta say, you are one of the best teachers I've watched so far especially for beginners because everyone else moved too fast or they acted like we knew where to go and how to do it and not explaining anything
It's invaluable to have a teacher you can trust to explain things as you do. You explain things so clearly. You've saved me time so many times. Thank you.
These are freaking incredible!! Inkscape was so intimidating I didn't think I would ever be able to figure it out. You are explaining it so well anyone can understand. I am finally getting somewhere with these tutorials!
I've played with this software at a very basic level a year ago achieving very primitive results. When someone explains the basics like you, before even going under the hood, it really begins to open up possibilities on what can be achieved. Thank you!
I love these videos. Us Mac users definitely miss out on all the keyboard trickery. The same commands don’t work for us. For now, anybody wondering, If you can have your text tool activated, than highlight your word (or half a sentence etc...) and play around with the top right of the screen. Mine has 5 options when the text command is being used (and not the cursor looking tool to select things). But basically there is where you can play with spacing etc... My 5 windows on the almost top right have menus that can drop down to make the spacing bigger or smaller etc...doesn’t seem as simple but with practice we can learn it I am sure...
AWESOME Video. Straight to the point and easy enough to understand for us Beginners.I'm able to digest each nugget while following along with the video. Thanks for taking the time to do these vids...Very Helpful!
I like your way in explaining you make me feel like I'm at the same level as you, I really enjoyed all the videos till now and I'll finish this tutorial, much appreciated for real 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻💛
Having watched some of these videos, it’s given me the confidence and ability to recreate a small low-res wallpaper I like and make it a crisp 1200x1600 and it looks fab! It wasn’t hard to do, but I wouldn’t have had an idea where to start before! I’m going to be watching a lot of your videos!
9:07 It takes more than clicking the blue circle to remove the binding to the curved text ! You have to click on the curved text and then go to Path > Object To Path
Amazing tutorials! I wish they'd taught us how useful these free tools can be during university and so many designers could save £1000s every year! More money for the things that really matter!
4:48 Hi TJ in this part i try to increase spacing between letters by holding Alt + Shift + but for whatever reason it just didn't work you have any idea why ?
When I try to move a subset of letters in the text box up or down using the "alt" key, nothing happens. Is there some other way to move these letters besides the alt key?
You cannot use a text box with vertical kerning. You have to just click where you want to type and then type - adjust. A text box will grey out the options to Vertically Kern the text.
Sweet sweet sweet this is so helpful, CorelDraw user here. I knew this functionality must be in here somewhere. They changed all the names for everything and put them in such out of the way places.
This was a good one, I'll be using this stuff a lot even though I'm just a beginner, going to watch it severals to master the concepts too. Thanks again for your tutorials !
for anyone having trouble not being able to move the letters with alt. when u click on the text tool the 'A' just click on the canvas do not click and drag and create a box. then u will be able to move the text with alt
Hi and really thank you for the tutorials on Inkscape. I noticed that when I highlight a letter and press alt i can't seem to be able to move it with the up and down arrows. Also, I can't always highlight a letter from the same word. Sometimes I need to create a new text in order to try out this exercise. Any idea why is that? Do I need to change something in the settings? Thanks for your time!
Same here but some one here in the comment section has its solution very clearly so I would suggest to see that comment But in short you have to select the text you want play with and then after selecting there are 5 options available at the top of the screen Be sure to open text and font window
Hi TJ. Thank you so much for these videos! I am wondering how to arc text at the bottom of the circle without them being upside down. Is this possible?
Is anyone else having issues with getting the multiline text right? I hit enter and the cursor goes right to the front and any text I key in after just get written over the first word I wrote, and I don't even have the justification option (3:57) in my 'Text and Font'. Using inkscape 1.1 here.
You are doing a great job for all of us working with this tool! Thank you!! Question - I do not see the options for the text and font properties panel. Have version 1.1. All I have is font, features and text but none of the other tools. Do I need a different version? Thanks again!
Hello TJ... Your videos are extremely helpful. I was wondering if you can do a tutorial of how to do a shadow on text for us beginners. Thanks in advance!
Hi Thanks so much for sharing this tutorial! However, I have been following you as I watch your video and somehow when increasing or decreasing the space between letters in a line by holding down both alt & shift at the same time and hitting + or -, the letters are not reacting at all. I may be doing something wrong. What could it be? Thanks again!
There is an icon "AA" in the upper taskbar where you can change space between characters. You select your text or your texbox and then you press + or - next to the icon to increase or decrease the space.
Thank you for all your instructions on Inkscape. It's been very helpful. Question; Why is it that my fonts all come out gray and fat? No matter what font I use they stay gray and are almost unreadable. I'm sure it's a setting I'm missing but I've watched several videos, tried help pages, and not finding anything.
Good Day, Thanks so much for your videos, new to this world. I've bought a CNC plasma cutting device an want to make cut files. I've downloaded a SVG file but need to clean up the font, rounding text letters, eliminating breaks etc. I've tried in the node tool but cant seem to get it. (FYI I'm using an IMack)
Is there a way to weld the letters together so that the word is one object? I am making cut files and need it to be one cut path rather than each individual letter.
Haven't messed around with text manipulation in a while and I just tried to simply center a paragraph similar to how center in Word works. How do you do that in newer version of inkscape? I don't see that entire tool bar under the font family as shown in the video at all. Nevermind, I found the option on the long horizontal toolbar across the top. That was driving me crazy like finding waldo and waldo ain't there.
4:00 - position of text (such as left, center, right) is not an option in my version. I have the "text and font" box pulled up, but I don't have those text positions options. Newest version 1.3.x
Okay I found how to do it finally. Not the best at describing though. Under "text and font" Very bottom of the side bar has an arrow facing to the right Click arrow, a pop up page will open Third from the bottom option "align and distribute" I believe this has the options you were mentioning in time stamp 4:00
Hi, I can't figure out how that letter moving around works and also how you can space out words, maybe one of my keys are not set up properly as I followed the instructions, it highlights the letter but when I try to move them around using arrows, nothing happens. How the whole function calls so I can go to command settings and maybe check there. Thanks
Great tutorial. Very detailed and easy to flow. Thank you for sharing your time and talent. Is there a way to add glyps to the text? I will definitely be subscribing.
I'm not able to change the allignment of letters in single word like you did with 'TJFree' by holding selecting a single alphabet with shift and then holding alt key and pressing up or down arrow key. Kindly help me out.
I'm just getting started with InkScape and just from this one video I'm seeing how powerful it is. I was especially impressed with the text following the curve of the elipse in just a couple of clicks. If it was in this video I missed it, but I'm needing to increase the text border size by a couple of pixels. I'm sure it can do it; I just didn't see it. This video really go me interested in use InkScape more. The quality of the vector graphics is so much better than raster, especially for text, and I need smoother, but sharper lines for book cover designs.
I love the text features. Thanks for the demo. Can you tell me how to align the text on the path? I've tried all kinds of ways, and my text always lines up the same way each time. I want to be able to position the text a certain way on the path, but it seems anchored. Skewing and rotating doesn't help.
Hi, I love your videos! I’m wondering why I can’t get something to repeat again after I successfully did it once. An example is getting a phrase to sit onto a drawn circle by selecting the “put on path” option. Both the object and the phrase were selected but nothing happened. I also was not able to highlight a specific letter in a word to move it around. I could move two or three letters w/o their being highlighted and I could highlight a letter by moving my cursor over it but not how you were seemingly illustrating how it was done. Thanks.
I have a silhouette craft cutter and Inkscape is way more robust. I will definitely be doing my designing in Inkscape from now. I deal with so much text.
If I want to make the corners slight smoother? Is it possible, like in illustrator the font turns into outline, letting me to shape the font I want to make into. Please guide,
Marko Babic Hii, I am a beginner don’t know much about it. But I had a circle and text both selected and clicked on put on path , the text encircled the circle.
i really love your videos easy to understand and upply i only have a question about "change case" option why when i use it, an error appear awsome vds by the way
I love these videos so much! Thank you! I’m stuck though when I’m trying to space letter out. I have a Mac and shift, alt and greater than/ less than wont work. Have any idea what I’m doing wrong?
I don't use Macs much, but I think sometimes the command key is used in some shortcuts in place of alt or shift or control... Maybe this can help: shortcutworld.com/Inkscape/mac/Inkscape_Shortcuts
Thank you so much for these wonderful tutorials! They've been sooooo helpful! I do have a question: is it possible to change a path back to text to be able to edit it?
Good question. If you recently changed the text to a path, you can control z or edit undo to get it back, but other than that, no, paths cannot be reconverted back into text or objects. Another option is to look into an OCR tool that will detect the characters on an image and turn them into text.
Once you have changed the aspect ratio by resizing you are screwed since there is no option to revert that even if you set a new font size, it will just keep that screwed aspect ratio
My Text and Font menu is much different than in your RUclips Lesson 6. I cannot find the left, right, center text justifications icons. They don't exist! Appreciate your help.
These video series are great but a lot of the things in the video didnt work for me, the shift and alt key text alterations and also i couldnt find the justification buttons in text and font
Why do my text prints so fuzzy (pixellated) while the screen image is sharp? When I copy and save as a GDI metafile in LibreOffice, the print is perfect - even at 5 pt.
After I create the oval, put the text "on path" around it, and change the oval's fill and stroke to none, how do I go back to the oval to make changes to fill and stroke?
Hello, one question: Why can I no longer add new fonts to inkscape, previously it was possible. When I add new fonts it works with other programs like Word or Gimp but not to inkscape! Can someone write me why this can happen, please. Thank you!
Is there any way to reverse the text? I'm trying to put text on the edge of a circle for a coin design, but the letters curve the wrong way and everything I've tried has the text coming out mirrored or backward.
Having an issue occassionaly. When I choose a shape such as elipse, rectangle, 3D image for some reason instead of getting the actual shape I get a dotted line with circle and square nodes on. This is happening now and again and I don't know what causes this to happen - nor how to stop it. I have to exit the page and re-start to get it back to the normal default.....? help would be appreciated.
QUESTION: I couldn't get the letter spacing shortcut (shift + alt) to work for me. I figured out how to do it using the + - options from the toolbar but wondering what I'm doing wrong that the keyboard shortcut wouldn't work. Thank you so much for making easy to follow tutorials! I was getting so frustrated trying to find a decent source for learning Inkscape and about ready to give up. You have changed that :-)
I noticed the text does not keep the options settings like the objects do. In other words if you have a certain fill and click another area the fill will be reset to standard. am I wrong?
I have a question for you, specifically about arcing your text. You said select text, shift select shape , but you're on a mac and the shortcut must not be the same for me. Can you help me figure out what the name of the function you're shortcutting is? Thank you.
Good question. It may be different on Mac, but shift just lets you add an additional object to the selection. You could also just left click and hold and capture both objects inside a selection box, to make them both be selected at the same time.
I am just learning inkscape..Question... After I finished with the fill and stroke part.. I added text but it was clear text... no color. I did figure out how to get my gradient to fill it in, however I am a bit confused as to why my text did not fill in automatically. I just downloaded Inkscape a few days ago, (8-6-22). Why did I have to drag my text box to include the new text?? Did I miss something??

Is there a way to use a different font not provided within Inkscape.
What does the flow into frame mean? Thanks for these videos by the way, I love them!
TJ. Do you have a tutorial on how to create editable text? Say for adding to a template. Great tutorials!!!
Hello, one question: Why can I no longer add new fonts to inkscape, previously it was possible.
When I add new fonts it works with other programs like Word or Gimp but not to inkscape!
Can someone write me why this can happen, please.
Thank you!
Can you have text ane cut out a word of that text? Or A shape adn cut the words you type out of that shape? Great videos!
Is there any way to reverse the text? I'm trying to put text on the edge of a circle for a coin design, but the letters curve the wrong way and everything I've tried has the text coming out mirrored or backward.
Thanks so much. This is an excellent start for me. I love it!
You're welcome!
