Cathedral of Learning Acrylic Painting

  • I don't often painting architecture, nor landscapes in general. The Cathedral of Learning is the most prominent and recognizable building on campus at the University of Pittsburgh, an institution at which I've spent more than half my life in one capacity or another. I was, in fact, an art major there many, many years ago.
    This piece was commissioned by an office at Pitt in which I used to work, as a retirement gift for a very dear person. I'd never spent as much time on a single piece as I did on this one... about 55 hours, in total. It was completed using M. Graham acrylic paints on a piece of Strathmore 500 series illustration board cut to about 13x22 inches (to fit an existing frame).
    I took my own photographs for reference.
