I had an 89 KTM DXC I used to race in the late 90s!! I loved that bike, I only sold it in 2004 for like a grand because it was hard to find parts for at that point and bought a KTM 300 instead. In hindsight I should have kept the 500. Wont ever be able to get my hands on one nowadays! Enjoy your ride!!
The 89 500 my friend owned didn't have much if any of an over-rev. My 91 would rev maybe 1000/1500 rpm higher and it was BRUTAL up there. Bought it new in 92 for $3450 i think and had it over 10 years. loved that bike. Only problems I had : Blown shock seal counter shaft seal and the kickstarter idle gear bolt backed out going about 40 mph - locked up the clutch and i did a little dirt surf. Had to replace the (expensive but nicest I've ever seen) basket (forged not cast btw) and have case machined, sleeved, and re-threaded where the idle gear bolt chowdered it out. The only warning I got was about 30 seconds before it happened- I felt what seemed like debris caught in chain/sprocket- looked back at it , didn't see anything and then "bang". If you own one of these bikes - keep an eye on that idle gear bolt or locktite the shit out of it and it'll go forever. Most powerful dirt bike I've ever ridden - quicker than any stock CR any stock KX and either of its big brothers 540/ 550. Managed to go years before I crushed the stock pipe - put on an fmf - it boosted the mid range but ruined the over-rev😞. Made the curve CR 500 like. The stock pipe had a cone piece welded just inside the stinger supposedly to make it quieter. I only know because mine broke loose while riding shortly after I got the bike (thought I had a piece of piston inside my pipe!). Idk if it made the bike any quieter but I know it fucking RIPPED without it 😉...Speaking of pistons - the stock forged Mahle piston in this bike is a work of art that never had to be replaced while I owned it! Maxima 927 from day one! The cylinder heads on these bikes have no gasket!! - tongue machined on head and groove in the cylinder. Throttle has 1/4 turn and 1/6 (I think) settings. Mine came set on the quicker pull of the two. If you switch it to the slower pull it makes the bike a little more friendly ..or less brutal is a better description. ..just a little😉 and I noticed better fuel mileage also . This bike will teach you about chains too - stock Regina (adjust every ride) scary how much that chain stretched without coming apart! Sidewinder o ring (👎) DID o ring (keep looking) Tsubaki (nope) RK o ring (adjust it a few times and thats it👍👍) And when your chain doesn't stretch like rubber - your sprockets last quite a bit longer 😉Night and day difference vs any other chain I've used. The only brand I will buy now. And finally, a rear tire could easily be shredded in about an hour lol 76 cr125 - 78 rm125 - 86 cr250 - 89 cr250 - 90 mx600 4stroke (ktm) - 91 mx500 - 92 cr500 - 98 kx250 - 98 cr500 - 06 450xcw - 08 450xcw. BTW you say your 89 has a nice rev to it- might be because of the pipe. I believe the 550 and the 500 shared the same (hydroformed) pipe for 91/92 . And if you need it to rip more - pull that cone out I mentioned about earlier 😉. Also - if any of them are not real crisp off the bottom - shaving a few thousands off the filter side of the slide cutout helps quite a bit ( Bing carb). Lastly I turned my idle way down so it wouldn't idle on its own - totally eliminated the occasional engine surging when braking hard
wow...thank you brother! This is PURE GOLD! I agree the KTM 500 is the best motor of the bunch. To me better than the 440 and the 550. Silly question but what part is the stinger? I want to look for that dang CONE! Yeah my 500 rips... def. want to take that cone out! Thank you bro for the great info and the nostalgia! I love it my KTM brother!! :)
Yes I had (on my 550) to have the throttle slide down a bit. Slavens used to sell a shaved down slide mode for the 550. Got that bike running too. Did you see my 550 video? Its on the channel. I have a 440 too.
@@rcuniversespeed9447 stinger is the rear where it funnels down to 1 inch or so. Called that because that the last half of pipe looks like a bee stinger.
@@rcuniversespeed9447 Just remembered - after the cone was out of the pipe my clutch slipped ever so slightly. I switched out springs to the heavier 550 springs and that did it. I didn't try ATF first - don't think I knew about that trick then.
Ay I own a 1991 KTM250dxc, sweet bikes, riding mine personally they have amazing motors and are so buttery smooth, mine is still on a stock head with full compression, my dad originally owned it and took such good care of it, now I'm just making her look good. Take care of them old KTMs, nothing like them.
Lol just remembered - when I sold mine the guy was too scared to ride it on the pavement lol. I took it down the street and went through the gears and showed him what it could do and told him " be careful it still scares ME sometimes " he handed me the cash and loaded it up lol
I fortunately own one of what I think is a rare model a 1989 KTM 500 DXC. Taller gears then the MX. Crazy Kate's her name. She'll stretch your arms!! No joke, I have an 86 cr500 that gets lots of attention and a great bike but dam!! I get nervous when I kick with my left!!! Woohooo!¡!!!!!
Will you post some more footage of the motor maybe take off the gas tank to show it from the top, I’m currently working on a 91 dcx and I’m in need of some help on where some of the hoses go. Cool bike 😎
Can you do a video on how to tell if its a KTM 500 like go over the engine some of the stuff on the chassie to be looking for that would be much appreciated I know you know your stuff

Funny, 89 is my favorite 500 of all time and 91 is my favorite looking 500 of all time, awesome bikes man

An 87 has popped up for a decent price and was curious if it was just as good of a bike (aka) just as powerful as the 89’s?
Still good but 62hp vs 65 hp. Still crazy fast
They are bonkers dude get it
I would sell them now.
The guys that want these are now almost 65 or older.
Or maybe someone wants their dad's bike like me ;)
