As a Three Wheeler since my 74 US 90, the most excitement among us was the 185S when it came out, then the 200X, 82 250R and the 85 250R. For pure fun I will say the 82 250 was the perfect blend of everything, with the 110's being the best of the rigid trikes for do it all fun!
This video brings back a lot of memories. I started riding with a 1983 ATC110 and then moved to a 1984 ATC250R so that whole lineup fit right between my two. Thanks for posting this one!
My dad's first bike was a 1982 Honda 200 ATC. He used it for hunting, ice fishing, farming, and I must've put a million miles on it riding around the driveway. That bike NEVER EVER let us down. Years down the road we sold it and with a bit of money bought the bike he wanted, and it was a 1985 Big Red 250es. It was sad to see the 200 go, but the Big Red sure was a step up for what we needed it for. Great channel by the way, new sub!! You sure are VERY knowledgeable on the Honda bikes, great stuff.
Thanks for the kind words. I like the 200cc bikes as you can tell. Those are some good memories, that why I love these bikes, they take me back to my childhood. Thanks for supporting the channel.
I just picked up two 1983 big Reds. One has front forks that are shot. Are you saying I could install froks from a 185 on it? What about solid non suspension forks?
All of the 185-200cc front ends will swap each other. BUT depending on which one you choose, you may have to use an 8, 9 or 11 inch front wheel. Meaning your front tire might not be the same as your rears .
My first 3wheeler was a 1984 200x with a 200s motor swapped in it. It was a lot of fun racing it on flat tracks. I put a heel toe shifter on it because the chassis was only an inch off the ground. It was a BLAST!
Best line up and explanation I have ever seen! Picked up an 84 200 with reverse and just stripped it right down, sand blast, welded rust holes closed and painting back up this week. Also got an 84 4 wheeler SX last month with spray tanks on the front and back and can’t wait to get in that too this winter!
That is an excellent collection of three wheelers! I had the 200S and I loved it. I came home from college and my parents had traded it for a golf cart for my sister. I was not happy.
I was away at college and ran up a big phone bill calling my girlfriend long distance. When I came back home for Spring Break, my dad had sold my modified 185s to pay for the phone bill.
Very Informative and detailed. I own a 83 Big Red. Mine is in superb shape, I am in my late 50's and still will not part with this bike as I am the original owner.
It seems guys our age have found memories of these machines from our youth. Even today I feel like a kid again, I took my R out for a little rip tonight, she still brings a smile to my face.
These just make me grin, grew up on a 90. I now have a '84 200m. About to take the carb apart...again. It spins, but not firing. Wish me luck!😊 Hello from South Louisiana
God so many memories with the Honda big reds, though I never had one a majority of the kids in my neighborhood did. I always had a Yamaha YZ 80 and we would trade out the rides while out and about. Keep up the great work
I have an 84 200ES and an 82 200E, the front end on both of them are perfectly fine, no issues whatsoever. I ride them a lot also, the 200ES did snowplow duty for many years, a few years back i bought a new snowblower and last year i traded the cycle country plow for the 200E that i just got done rebuilding. I have seen ones with worn out front ends, its fairly common, but i have seen just as many good front ends. The 200M front ends are not exactly easy to run out and get to swap onto these, the last 200M front end i saw for sale cost more then i paid for the 200ES many years ago, i have had that one for 10+ years. Front end still works great, actually has dampening to it yet. Its kind of a moot point in my opinion, since they are hardtails the front suspension doesn't really do a whole lot, but i like the hardtails. I also have an 81 ATC200 and a 74 ATC90, and a few others float in and out as i work on them.
Hi, glad I found your Chanel I have a 200e 1983 model. I think the froze up front axel can be rebuilt but I can't find any sort of a shock replacement or even whol ront fork assembly that is much better than what I have now. What is your reccomendation to fix my front end.
Best option swap the front end from a 200m, atc200 or 200x. You can not rebuild the 200e or 200es front forks, the parts are no longer available plus re chroming the forks would be expensive.
Keep an eye out for an 83 front end. It's a nice suspension upgrade from the 82. Also a good set of 300ex or 400ex hubs will bolt on and space out the rear 4 to 6 inches total
Just got a 200m all original.. Bring me back to my childhood days. Now I'm old and its going to take longer to heal and I know I'm riding a death machine.
Hey Cowboy, the bearings are interchangeable, though I have never done it, I believe you can. ask the forums over at www.3wheelerworld.com or Honda Hoaders on FB, I just don't want to tell you wrong. Thank you for watching, sorry I don't have a better answer
I have used those too, the other issue is the the chrome on the forks being pitted and eating the fork seals. It really depend how bad off your forks are if they are saveable. Thanks for watching. Thanks for sharing.
Will do, join some forum on FB or on the web like www.3wheelerworld.com you will find like minded people like me. beat the bushes, my best deals are when I am out just looking.
There are a couple guys doing just that. I think brad rye makea a lift kit for the 250es. His products can be bought through POWERSPORTS SURPLUS LLC. Thanks for watching.
Great video! I just got a 1982 200e. It has a smaller front tire and it needs replacing. What is best, stick to the original size 25/12/9 or what is on the front wheel now 22/11/9 ? Thanks
Id go with a ocelot knobby in the 25 in size. It will look better, that a light tire and a knobby aways works, plus you can rotate them as needed if they are matched amzn.to/3UUzpUm
The 200s is a great machine. Start with downloading the manual from 3wheelerworld.com it's free. There is a ton of information on that site. Thanks for watching and subscribing
Dang those bring back memories when I was a kid. A friend of mine had a couple 185s and a 200. Im not sure the year but I remember the 200 he rode most and it had the big balloon tires all the way around and no suspension. All my other friends had dirt bikes and whatnot and I always had to ride on the back of that 200 until my 11th b-day my parents bought me a 200X and I fell in love. I suddenly had the best 3 wheeler out of all of them lol. If I remember correctly it had a 5 speed clutch. When I got it it had a rack on the back that I ended up taking off because I did not like the way it looked as well as a dune flag. The headline had a blue cage around it and I remember very well the clutch handle was curved lol. Like someone had dumped it over and bent it perfectly without breaking it. I left it alone because it felt comfortable in my hand that way lol. I did end up having to replace the kick start once. I almost broke my leg when I went to kick it over and idk what happen but it stripped out and my knee extended backwards. Anyway it was an awesome bike. I loved it. Would love to get my hands on another one.
Yes, sir they do bring back the memories, every time I climb on one I feel like a kid again, you should look for one in your area, they are still out there. Thank you for watching and sharing your memories with us.
Fantastic information, I'm down to a pair of 200's and a pair of 250's with my dx225. All riders in different conditions and I enjoy every one of them. Speaking as a seat cover guy, take care of your seat foam and keep all the seats covered. Once they start to rot and turn brown, then to powder, they're gone, and good luck finding good replacements. I've paid over $50 just for shipping on one of the seats I needed.
Your correct. Hi flight carries a few seat foams, but not many, for the money, buying a used seat with good foam and recovering it, is the cheapest way I know. Thank you for watching.
@@Mrcbuilds Since the metal seat base for the early 200 e,m, and es rust and are difficult to recover, I try to pick them up as cheap as possible with decent foam and transfer it to a plastic base which is the same shape and easy to cover. The rubber bumpers and latch spring are a bonus. Be careful the latch arms themselves seem to be about a fraction of an inch different on the metal and so be careful and test fit before you cover.
@@Mrcbuilds Mine was a 1977, 258 L6, 3 spd manual, Dana 20 front axle, Amc20 rear, 4:10 gears, 4" trailmaster lift, on 33x12.50-15 Super Swampers. I wished it had the 4spd granny, but it done good in 4 low crawling in the woods.
We had a 1982 185's. Bought brand new. The year the front fork extensions were added to prevent tipping. It was fast. But we made it faster. My dad replaced the damper style sprocket hub with a custom made hub he designed himself to adapt the 200x sprockets. That allowed you to swap to a smaller less tooth count sprocket for speed or a larger more tooth count sprocket for pulling and off roading. The drive sprocket could also be swapped to a smaller less tooth count or larger more tooth count. The taller the tires the higher the speed and vise versa. Couldn't kill it. In the 25 yrs we owned it the only major thing that was ever done to it was a simple re-ring, light hone and new timing chain with a valve adjustment. Indestructible. If it had the Honda name on it. It meant quality in the 80's. They were built to last. I've ridden just about every make and model honda atc and atv from that era. Great times.
Hi Mark your dad was a handy guy. And i have converted many rubber rear sprockets to a solid mount, which is a great upgrade over a sloppy sprocket. Thanks for watching.
I got a free trike and it has sat for at least two years Since seeing your troubleshooting tips I’m confident I can get it running…I really don’t like the stiff front end…but I just need it to carry fruit boxes …..my roads are very steep so I’m not sure when I’m going to get thrown off of it.
@@Mrcbuilds thanks for the encouragement Looks like I need a 12v source to trouble shoot Where do most source a battery…..any cheap replacements out there…glad I’m not alone or this project or it will be just guarded by spiders
i have a honda 200es 1985 any way where u change the gear up to make it go faster it has a oil leak i would like a video on how to change it i dont know how to fix this thanks
In the us the 200es stopped in 84, if it is a 85 200es it's an European model. Very cool. That is a 1 year only bike. To my knowledge it does not share any differential parts with any other bike.. so the next best option is to make sure it is tuned up. You will need to make motor improvements for more speed. Higher compression piston, header, exhaust, larger carb. That really all you can do. Otherwise I would suggest finding a 250es. It is a larger and faster machine, with most of the same options as your 200es.
Awesome Video! Question about replacement Front Rim for a 1985 ATC 200M, Is the front rim the same as the rear? and do you have a recommended replacement product, Can you get new ones? Thanks for your time.
Yes all 3 rims are the same. The oroblem now is no one makes the correct offset. I reccomend putting an oe wheel on the front and 2 after market wheels on the back. Tpi makes a steel wheel with a half inch offset difference, but it will not matter on the rear.
@@Mrcbuilds Thank you for your reply. Unfortunately both of my rear rims have rotted out due to riding in the snow. Would you happen to know the actual offset? AMS Wheels has a rim - AMS Steel Replacement Wheel - Sold Each (9x9 4/150 3+6) Any thoughts? Thanks again

cool to see a line up of 200s / I have a 79 110 bought new when I was a kid. I'm working on a 82 200e and I'm converting the front end to a 200x. also in the barn a 81 185s , 83 200s. I was wondering if you had a video of swapping the 200x front end on any 185 or 200. I have all the parts to the 200x and the 200e front ends . what would you do. if I had cell service I would show you the pics of all including my 87 John Deere AMT 600 5 wheeler. Keep up the good work.
Thanks for watching, I buy the bearing kit on ebay ($20) it includes upper and lower captured bearings, this makes it a easy swap. The 200x is a great front end, why not put the 158/200 engine in the X? a 200x chassis it alot more comfortable, you can make it an automatic and keep disk brakes front and rear.
@@Mrcbuilds I don't have a 200x frame nor do I want it. I live in a remote area and would prefer the hard tail of the 200e for use with pulling and carrying weight . my bikes are work horses not trail riders or trailer queens. I do know it will be different. Have'nt seen it done
The 22 inch tall tire firs the smaller bikes nicely. I like a knobby vs a mud tire, but that depends on the style of riding you do. If you mud a little, get some swamplites.
85/86 are very sought after ATC, nice score, I have a 86, they call them Little Reds, because of the electric start and reverse options. Thank you for watching, I hope you enjoy the videos.
@@Mrcbuilds Yeah I love the reverse and electric start. Everything works on it as it should. Its really for my lady, shes always been an ATC fan and I know it wont get ridden hard and put away wet.
@@Mrcbuilds I only have the one but I’ve had it 14yrs now and it’s a part of the family. Sits under a blanket in the dry garage all year when not being used ha
I do not think so, but if they do it is built into the CDI, there is no mechanical limiter that i can think of, it would have to be retarding the spark. I have never experienced one.
I have never tried it. Check to see if the axle bearings are the same. The way the housing attaches is completely different but the axle itself may swap.
Thanks for the info I just got one from my father just pasted away hasn’t been ridden in years sat in a shed out of the weather wanting to get it running what could the average cost be has great condition in finders and seat has a hi lo and auto reverse. Wanting to use it fir around the yard and trails etc. I think it’s a 85
Sorry for your loss James, Its really hard to say, go to my "will it run: video", and verify spark first, then compression, then timing and fuel/air delivery. You should find the issue following those steps. ruclips.net/video/IiihbGQXUsw/видео.html. good luck and let me know if you run into any issues.
simple rule of thumb- 200cc chain drive with hi/lo/no reverse is a 82 or 83 big red, 200cc shaft drive hi/lo/reverse is a 84 Big Red, no subtrans, chain drive and electric start is a 84/85 200m (orange stickers on tank and fenders)
Hoping someone can help. I just picked up a 1983 ATC 200. When I loosened the 4 bolts on the back of the axle to adjust the chain, the bottom right one broke loose so to speak I was able to tighten the chain and the tighten 3 of the 4 bolts but the bottom rightvone just spins freely so to speak. Can I ride it like this. Could I use some JB weld to make sure it doesn't slide back and forth or do I need to find someone to weld it.
Your in luck, if it's the lower right bolt, you can access the nut by taking the rear brake cover off. You can reweld the factory nut in place or just tight it using 2 wrenches. The reinstall the brake shoe cover. Thanks for watching and be sure to subscribe for more atc repairs
@@richardmcfadden3980 you can use a large crescent wrench or even a old style pipe wrench on the axle nuts, just spray them with lubes before you take them loose.
I've been looking for a Honda 250 big red and haven't had any luck here in Indiana. I've found some of the 200 big reds but I want a 250 big red. If can point me in the right direction I would appreciate it

My 185s sounds rattly up top but the chain is tight manually tensioned it and the valves are in spec. Not sure what it could be or if they just sound like that
@@Mrcbuilds I don't remember what weight i thew in it but it really sounds like super loose valves but I checked them more than once as well as messing with the chain tensioner and the sound is always the same.

I bought my first 200e new in 1983, and even when new the front end wasn't much, 90% is in the tires. When the bushings wore out and started to slop around, I just welded the front tubes together so no slide action anymore, works great.

You can google pictures and compare with your bike or you can join some online trike forums and post a picture. If you want look me up on facebook and send me a pic, I would be glad to help you out
It's like a lineup of my bikes. I got a 81 185s, 83 200e, 84 200es that I did get the electric start working on, and a 84 200s. I also have a 125m that's my current project
I have an 83 110. I’m sure it’s the most entry level one they offered cus it doesn’t even have suspension, but I was wondering why a 110 wasn’t mentioned?
The 200e and 200es both had low gear, which would make them better suited for towing. The M was geared for all round riding. Much like the 200s. But the M was physically bigger than the 200s.
@@Mrcbuilds I remember reading the brochure or a magazine article. I was obsessed with three wheelers. I don't even know why the M existed but that what I remember reading about it. We ended up getting the '84 Big Red anyway which is a far superior machine to both with the shaft drive and the reverse. We had a '82 110 before that. It's low range setting could pull a car. LOL
@@Mrcbuilds I remember now. The M model was the S with electric start and larger tires. All the M models have electric start. It was aimed at campers and hunters.
So on the 83 185s, I take it that you have to remove the rack in order to remove the fenders. What a pain in the ass. I love the look with the rack but can't justify having it unless there's a quick disconnect.
Hi my 200x still got the original motor an kicker with a blue seat an aluminum wheels. My 200s all original and I have the black skirt around the rear fender also with original tires

I had a 82 or 83 185s when i was 16, I beat the crap out of that thing and never had a problem. Loved it.
Its amazing so many of these are still running strong today.
These just make me grin, grew up on a 90. I now have a '84 200m. About to take the carb apart...again. It spins, but not firing. Wish me luck!😊 Hello from South Louisiana
Good luck sir! You got this.
Thnx for the encouragement, I'm a girl. 😊
Wow mate nice collection thanx for info
Your very welcome
God so many memories with the Honda big reds, though I never had one a majority of the kids in my neighborhood did. I always had a Yamaha YZ 80 and we would trade out the rides while out and about. Keep up the great work
Thanks for sharing
Good tip on the 400ex hubs and wheells. I didn't know they were a direct fit but that is an easy way to widen the rear track. Thanks!
Glad to help, thanks for watching and subscribing to the channel
Thanks for watching, long live the Honda ATC
I grew up on a 185s with no suspension most fun I ever had I really put it through it's paces still going to this day
Hi Guy, the 185 and 185s are tanks of machines. Its comical how they out last modern machines
@@Mrcbuilds most definitely that motor has never been opened up
Hi, glad I found your Chanel I have a 200e 1983 model.
Flipped many of these, man they were fun
Just picked up 1982 185s
Good video!
Thanks, the 185s, is a very nimble machine, just fast enough to be fun.
Keep an eye out for an 83 front end. It's a nice suspension upgrade from the 82. Also a good set of 300ex or 400ex hubs will bolt on and space out the rear 4 to 6 inches total
Nice One !
I had a Tri-Z 250 many moons ago. I miss that crazy thing so much that I just bought a 200m. It’s arriving tomorrow, I’m real excited. 😄
Nice one!

These engines are bomb proof hey ? Have you ever replaced of need to strip it right down ?
Just got a 200m all original..
Bring me back to my childhood days.
Now I'm old and its going to take longer to heal and I know I'm riding a death machine.
Just take it easy, lol , I know that's hard, I feel 15 again everytime I get on one. Thanks for watching and subscribing
Would the x forks bolt to the 200
Hey Cowboy, the bearings are interchangeable, though I have never done it, I believe you can. ask the forums over at www.3wheelerworld.com or Honda Hoaders on FB, I just don't want to tell you wrong. Thank you for watching, sorry I don't have a better answer
I have a way of rebuilding the early forks using mini gas shocks that I modify. Works like new and looks great
I have used those too, the other issue is the the chrome on the forks being pitted and eating the fork seals. It really depend how bad off your forks are if they are saveable. Thanks for watching. Thanks for sharing.
Great info I'm looking for 1985 ATC 70 if you have any info please let me know thanks
Will do, join some forum on FB or on the web like www.3wheelerworld.com you will find like minded people like me. beat the bushes, my best deals are when I am out just looking.
Do u have a go to place for replacement seat foam?
Highflight seats, or cosmic quads for new foam, ebay for used. You may be able to find a whole seat sometimes for the same money.
That 185 looks good with the extended read end. What’s the best way to extend the rear end on a shaft drive? 250SX
Awesome video thank you!

Heaven in the opening shot.
Thanks, one of my first videos
Good job 👍🏼
Thanks!
I have a 200x with a broken kickstart I love it to death and fairly clean but looking for a motor to swap in
Very common problem, any 185s, 200 or 200s engine will bolt right in. Tip: reuse the the 200x front motor mounts. Thanks for watching
I am needing a gasket for 1987 Honda Big Red. The gasket that connects the muffler to the engine after the header! Please help.

Thank you CJ7Fun, I had a 85 cj8 back in the day I6 4spd. I d like to have that one back for sure.
@@Mrcbuilds he was a life time tool and die guy up until his retirement a few years back. If it consisted of metal he could work magic with it.
Do you have information on the tires combo you have on that first 200 you showed us? I'd love to know for my 200s
I picked them up at a used tire store. I believe they are 300ex wheels and stock tires. I bought the hubs on ebay also for a 300ex. The tires are 18s
I got a free trike and it has sat for at least two years
Since seeing your troubleshooting tips I’m confident I can get it running…I really don’t like the stiff front end…but I just need it to carry fruit boxes …..my roads are very steep so I’m not sure when I’m going to get thrown off of it.
Take your time, you can do it! Run less air it the front tire to give you some suspension.

i have a honda 200es 1985 any way where u change the gear up to make it go faster it has a oil leak i would like a video on how to change it i dont know how to fix this thanks
It is a larger and faster machine, with most of the same options as your 200es.
do you have a link for 200s blue shock boots.
I can not find a listing for OE boots. Best bet is get some universal ones and make them work. Oe part number is 51611-958-003
Awesome Video!

What size and brand tires do you have on the 200 1983?
The 22 inch tall tire firs the smaller bikes nicely. I like a knobby vs a mud tire, but that depends on the style of riding you do. If you mud a little, get some swamplites.

#mrc_builds @mrc_builds , do the honda 185s come with a rev limiter stock??
I do not think so, but if they do it is built into the CDI, there is no mechanical limiter that i can think of, it would have to be retarding the spark. I have never experienced one.
@@Mrcbuilds okay thanks, thanks for the vids too not a lot of people do this, be safe keep er up
Will the 185 rear end fit in a 200e
I have never tried it. Check to see if the axle bearings are the same. The way the housing attaches is completely different but the axle itself may swap.

Great. Video, very informative, I’m going to look at an 84 this afternoon.it’s a 200, not sure if it’s an E or not.
simple rule of thumb- 200cc chain drive with hi/lo/no reverse is a 82 or 83 big red, 200cc shaft drive hi/lo/reverse is a 84 Big Red, no subtrans, chain drive and electric start is a 84/85 200m (orange stickers on tank and fenders)

I have an 83 110. I’m sure it’s the most entry level one they offered cus it doesn’t even have suspension, but I was wondering why a 110 wasn’t mentioned?
Hey Jase, this is a showcase of the 200cc class only, this class offer many different variations of almost the exact engine.
If my memory serves correctly, the M model was designed to tow, the S was the "sport" trail model and the ES was the Big Red.

@@oooyugi it's a rebuildable, hydraulic shock assembly vs the old sealed system on the 200 big reds that sucked from the factory
Okie Canuck

1981 was first year of Honda 250r
Thanks J mendo, Thanks for the information, bucket list is to own a 85 250r.

The 87 is definitely a hard one to find. Congratulations
I will disagree, I have a 250sx. Best all around ATC. I also have a 350x for performance
Hey Jaime, this video was a showcase of the 200cc 3 wheeler's and the different options between them. I agree with you the SX is best all round bike. I also have a 250sx and 350x, and those are great machines and I highlight them both in the follow up video of the larger displacement trikes here - ruclips.net/video/IBNuyKC93mM/видео.html.
I just couldn't compare these machines to the larger ones as a apples to apples comparison. Thanks for watching, and enjoy those ATC's!
Thank You, they have been sitting for a few years so I know I’m gonna have to do work to get them up and running again. There is nobody I know or trust to work on them here in SoCal

Yeah it's in a shed at my Moms house. I'm thinking about getting it running again. Do you know where I can get 3 good tires for the 185s?
