  • In this episode, I find out the real problems with my 1985 Honda 350x 3 wheeler, First we do a "Will it run" and find out it will not, it has low compression and cam issues, then we do a engine removal and full tear down of the top end with some amazing results and carnage. Come along for the ride, grab some popcorn cause this is a long one, your not going to believe what I find inside this monster of a three wheeler.
    Be sure and check out my good buddy Preston over ‪@ThisOldTrike‬ we are working hard to keep Honda ATC content alive on youtube.

    My 350X had a chronic issue with the auto decomp staying set....so...I disconnected it and when it comes time to kick it over, I just cycle it through until I'm on top of the compression stroke and Begin there. It's a foolproof method and religion with Harley kicker guys!

    In '94, I bought a nice '85 350X from a friend. It didn't run. He said he was riding it and it suddenly died. Not being the mechanical type, he sold it to me. I pulled the plug and saw shrapnel. Ok....not good. Upon pulling the engine and pulling the head, the destruction was clear. A valve had dropped a head and it bounced around the chamber, puncturing the piston and severely scarring the head.
    I took the head and cylinder to a local m/c shop for their opinion. they said the combustion chamber could be smoothed out, so I decided to have the whole thing bored to 1st oversize to restore the lost compression from the damaged head....might as well go for a Wiseco 10.25:1! Well, in for a dime, in for a dollar! Lets port and polish the head, have a custom ground cam made for it. Add a K&N filter and a DG RCM exhaust. Break it in and lets go play. The thing is a monster, but I'm finding that the the Woolly Booger rear tires suck. Ok, lets get some Douglas wheels with 20" ITP Holeshots. Much better grip action, but I'm running out of top end speed, so a 1 tooth larger countersprocket goes on....Oh yeah ! Thats it!
    25 years later, the combo is still an exciting ride...tons of arm yanking, freight train power that impresses all that see it in action! Stock in appearance, right down to the original seat cover and all plastic, it displays well.

    I subscribed. I have always loved three-wheelers but have never been a great mechanic - not a good combination as all of the bikes get older - this was a great video explaining the 350X motor. I have always shied away from that bike due to the complexity of the engine relative to a 250R. I look forward to more repair/renewal videos from you, thanks for your work.

    I really enjoyed watching this video, you point out lots of attention to detail items that really matter. By watching this tear down of this particular bike, it's a good explanation of how all these ATCs should be look at if someone wants to do it the Wright way. I strongly agree with the methods you take, I try to be meticulous when I tear down an engine like this. The closer it is to factory, the better it is.

    A couple of times I had to stop the vid and take a short walk and think about how bad this might be, but it turned out to be a series of "fixable" problems. I used to have an open mind when it came to finding out how bad the damage was on a machine but after working at 3 shops, not as a mechanic, but how badly " do it yourselfers" and kids destroy equipment on a regular basis, I guess I'm gun shy. Since it wasn't intentional, it shouldn't cost so much to fix it, no matter how many energy drink or beer drinking clowns spent time taking every shortcut known to man. Glad the patient has a positive prognosis and I enjoy your work very much. By the way, it snowed this morning and rained all afternoon, no calendar spoken here.

    Very informative video. Tearing 4 strokes down has always been a dreading thing to me even though I’ve done it before. There’s just so much more going on with pieces and parts. I can see how the previous owner messed up. The only thing I would have done different than you in the tear down is put specific bolts that go together in a zip lock bag and mark what they are and note if there is ones that are longer ware they go. That way if a month goes by before your able to put it back together you can refresh your memory and it just makes things easier. I use to do the all in a coffee can method and always something would either come up missing or I’d forget ware something went. Hopefully by saying that I don’t jinx ya.

    Yup tolerances on a engine are critical, that explains the hard starting and low compression. Looks fixable though, im assuming that you are going to go back stock size hopefully the head cleans up and no valves are bent. With that cam being 180 out maybe that's why you had that piston damage

    • @mrcbuilds
      @mrcbuilds  Год назад +1

      hmmm, that's an odd one, old grommets get hard and brittle, if yours aren't brittle then I think the tank is moving around to much, do you have a large washer on the bolt for the tank under the seat? if no, add one, if yes flip it upside-down, it may be concave and not providing enough clamping force. Thanks for watching!

      Ive installed new grommets twice I don't have the correct washer on the rear under seat I have a couple washers stacked up. I'll see what I can come up with to make it more secure . My tank is plastic and about 1/4 of the front of the grommets stick out the front of the slot it fits into . I'm thinking the grommets need to set further in that slot the tank wont slide forward and futher . Oh yeah I saw what looked like a trail 70 in your shop. I had a 70 in the 70s haha . It ran that way? If you ever have low compression, and you're not sure, put a little oil in the cylinder. Old 2 stroke trick. Helps seal up the rings and gives you an idea as to what's up. Can't believe it ran that way.

    • @handsolo6241
      @handsolo6241 2 года назад +1

      Didn't mean to insult your intelligence with the oil trick. Just wasn't all the way thru the video. Upside down cam certainly smacked the valve into the piston. Still hard to believe it ran. Hey mrc_builds? I have a question short as I can and to the point. My Yamaha 200E is fouling out spark plugs every 20 days. I did some research and the mechanic put a NGK D8EA. I researched and found the manual said it needs a D7EA. The spark plugs are black and smell like gas. Do you think it's burning too rich or lean? I'm really leaning toward a carb problem. Air to fuel ratio. Man, I don't know anything about that. When I get it started and it gets warmed up after about 10 minutes, it will sputter, slight black smoke will come out of the tail pipe and will go dead. It will crank back up, but it's the same ole thing. I just have to keep the gas to it from keeping it from going dead. Any information you can give me will be much appreciated. I wish I had your knowledge. Thanks man.

    • @mrcbuilds
      @mrcbuilds  2 года назад +2

      Download a spark plug chart (image) off google, as a general rule black and wet oily is bad seals, black not oily but fuel soaked is rich, tan is perfect. Melted tip is extremely lean and very hot.
      I'd say lean out the mix 1/2 at a time. Checking the plug often. You may need a carb cleaning. As well.

    Ive got an issue on my 84 big red. It was running fine for a few months, but one day it was rainy and i ran out of shop space to store the three wheeler so i had to leave it outside in the rain for the night. I get back outside the next day and it started up just fine, but shut off after a couple seconds. I tried and tried to get it to start back up but it wouldnt fire. I check spark and its got it. I pulled the air intake cover off and discover that my gas is shooting out the air intake instead of going inside the cylinder. I bought feeler gauges and adjusted my valves, but that didnt solve my issue and I still have gas blowing out the back of the carb. Any help is appreciated, I miss driving my big red.

      That does sound strange. Have you checked the timing? Could it have jumped time when you started it, then it died, now its backfiring because it's out of time. Check the timing, if it's good than carb/fuel would be next.
