    The, "creator of the whole muppet thing," was a wonderful man by the name of Jim Henson. He was both a genius and a saint. R.I.P., Jim. :*(

    Even in those earliest of days, it was pretty obvious that Kermit was star material.

    Dad talked about how this show was a must-see in the late fifties on the TVs in the downtown DC taverns he and his fellow government drones hit after a dull day's work. A dozen years later, when he had five kids who were all Sesame Street addicts he couldn't have been more pleased!

    This is incredible! I had no idea the Muppets started in the 50s. Henson just busted out of the gate embracing technology, education, and pure comedy. The man was a visionary. I feel like the statements in Visual Thinking are the core messages that CTW, Sesame Workshop, and PBS in general have been trying to broadcast. I think some of those messages are "think for yourself", "hone your abilities", and "things are rarely what they seem".

    About a young Phil Gaines doing the station ID tag: Yes, I almost didn't recognize Dad's voice--it was little reedy before it matured. Those he left behind miss hearing his terrific voice, but we have many tape recordings and videos of him when we want to hear him again! --his daughter.

    2.he has no collar
    3.he used to be skinnier

    Maybe it's just that most of the episodes are lost. But it's funny how Sam is the title character and yet the show seems to pay little attention to him.

      True. The "friends" we're the real stars. (Sam himself never talked, just reacted in shock to the others or lip synced to a song.) Of course the real breakout star goes without saying…

    There are some Sam & Friends footage that we have yet to see. Still nobody has uploaded "Anything You Can Do," "There's A New Sound," "Tweedle Dee," "The Yellow Rose Of Texas," "Weather Warehouse," "Stan Freberg Demands Credit," & "The Final Episode (December 15th 1961)". When do you think someone will ever post these Sam & Friends videos?

    Thanks for sharing that detail!
    Previous to joining Channel 4, Phil Gaines had a classical music all-night show at WWDC titled "One to Six Show". When Phil moved to WRC, his first assignment was that same overnight shift on their radio side. Gaines was the next-to-last full time staff announcer at WRC leaving only Mac McGarry in that role when he was shown the door in 1979.
    Marion T. "Phil" Gaines III, died May 23, 2010 at Charlotte Hall Veterans
    Home in St. Mary's County, Md. at age 87.

    In 1954, CBS-TV aired "The Morning Show" on weekdays to compete with the NBC "Today" Show. Locally, WTOP-TV9 attempted a Saturday version for youngsters titled "The Junior Morning Show". (The word "Good" was not in the title.)
    The "Afternoon" program on WRC-TV4 changed hosts repeatedly to try to gain viewers. Mac McGarry and a young Willard Scott co-hosted for a few months, but were dropped. The Muppets stayed on-board until the very end. (Ed Walker was not involved with "Afternoon" at all.)

    It's amazing how much of Kermit is already "there" in these earliest appearances. Sure it's bizarre seeing him wearing a wig as a backup singer in the arguably unfortunate lip synch numbers, but here so much of his voice and personality are the same one that persisted to the Muppet Show, Muppet Treasure Island, and even survived acquisition by Disney. Through him Jim Henson achieved a sort of immortality.

    Baltimore-based Esskay markets primarily to Maryland & the District of Columbia. It is a sponsor of various sports entities in the region, including the Orioles, Ravens & the Mid-Atlantic Sports Network (MASN). The slogan "Taste the difference quality makes" is still used by the company.

    While attending the U. of Florida, he worked at campus radio station WRUF, where he was given his professional name "Phil Gaines" (a phonetic reversal of the University's town name, Gainesville.)
    Upon arriving in Washington,DC in 1953, he began work at WMAL as a staff announcer and television host of local programs including "Future Flyers Club" and "Bowl the Champ." During that time he taught speech classes at George Washington University and American University.

    Are the Hank and Frank, as Huntley and Brinkley, real voice from Chet Huntley and David Brinkley?

    • @kaptainkidshow
      @kaptainkidshow  8 лет назад +4

      +유동균 (DVSofficial) The answer is absolutely "Yes," although it is unlikely Huntley or Brinkley were directly involved. At the time, the NBC News Huntley-Brinkley Report was the most watched U.S. network nightly TV newscast. Jim Henson instructed his WRC-TV broadcast technicians to make an audio recording of Huntley and Brinkley's NBC-TV newscast and then isolate those little sound bites that were used in this skit. Thank goodness the skit was preserved on film, for some reason.

    • @reshiram202
      @reshiram202 8 лет назад

      Essentially, all they did was record the saying "Chet Huntley/David Brinkley, NBC News, New York/Washington." Then they would take individual soundbites and play them at the appropriate times. This would make sense because Sam and Friends ran on the WRC NBC affiliate channel 4 in 1961.

    So who was Sam?

    • @kaptainkidshow
      @kaptainkidshow  8 лет назад +5

      -"Sam...was a primitive version of the basic kind of hand and rod puppet that Jim
      Henson devised in the mid-fifties. He had the face of a prizefighter, with
      protruding Clark Gable ears, a W.C. Fields nose, and permanently astonished
      eyes. Like a well designed cartoon character, he derived some of his
      personality from his features. But Jim's manipulation of Sam - a tilt of the head
      to find an appropriate eye focus, a bounce to a song - completed the picture."
