I know Andrew is right about automation. Walked into my Walmart a few days ago. I’ve been going to this Walmart my whole damn life, I remember when self checkout was novel and new and most the aisles had cashiers and were full. But I walked in a few days ago. Half those aisles are replaced now with self checkout machines and as many as 4 out of 20 aisles will be open at once. Hardly anyone is going to them, and there are lines at the self checkout machines. Cart pushers are barely needed since there’s the mule. Only stocking still requires a decent amount of people, only because the technology hasn’t turned in that direction, not because it can’t be done (it’s mostly about having a way for the robot to sort and identify objects, then locating their proper place. Machines already do this type of sorting and always have since their invention. It was their primary purpose). As a 22 year old who is a full time student and whose first job only lasted during the season years ago and hasn’t found work since then (not for lack of trying, I can promise you that. Can’t tell you how many times Kroger said they were hiring and how many times I applied only to be denied the next day), got an interview at McDonald’s but didn’t get that job either (what is so wrong with me I can’t get hired as an adult college student to do a job someone without an education can do, someone who is 15 can do?) it scares me to think about a future where jobs die out. Thankfully I’m in computer science, so I’ll have a chance, but at some point there won’t even be a need for more of them. There’s been insanely high demand for them for generations but apparently it’s not stopped them from creating the greatest shit on the planet. Experience is the most important thing ever, and if it’s impossible to take that first step, how are you ever suppose to get your foot out the fucking door?
OPTION 1: Try a State government job. They have structured Job Classifications Series where you can start at the bottom & progress in the Series of your choice. Plus, the benefit packages are great! OPTION 2: Learn everything you can about Blockchain Technology & learn to Code & Design it. (Public & Private sector are just looking into implementing it. Go for Public/State jobs for more security, as many private companies will rise & fall with this new technology..) OPTION 3: Work for the Post Office. You can live anywhere, great benefits & some jobs don't even require a high school diploma. For real! (Delivery jobs cannot completely be automated away.) There are Companies who will greatly increase your odds of getting hired by the Post Office for a fee (practice tests, etc.) OPTION 4: Check your State government for "Apprentice Programs." You get PAID while you LEARN over a 2 or 4yr program with zero debt & a near automatic hire into the Union that trained you. Okay, good luck.

Though Bernie even has a lot less policies and some of his policies seem to be based in some type of sense of moral justice instead of reasoning (like upping minimum wage. It could work or it could push businesses to invest harder into automation so they can do it even sooner).

And the 1000 dollar UBI is basically raising the minimum wage without worrying about hours per week. And it doesn't directly impact the companies bottom line. I know Andrew is right about automation. Walked into my Walmart a few days ago. I’ve been going to this Walmart my whole damn life, I remember when self checkout was novel and new and most the aisles had cashiers and were full. But I walked in a few days ago. Half those aisles are replaced now with self checkout machines and as many as 4 out of 20 aisles will be open at once. Hardly anyone is going to them, and there are lines at the self checkout machines. Cart pushers are barely needed since there’s the mule. Only stocking still requires a decent amount of people, only because the technology hasn’t turned in that direction, not because it can’t be done (it’s mostly about having a way for the robot to sort and identify objects, then locating their proper place. Machines already do this type of sorting and always have since their invention. It was their primary purpose). As a 22 year old who is a full time student and whose first job only lasted during the season years ago and hasn’t found work since then (not for lack of trying, I can promise you that. Can’t tell you how many times Kroger said they were hiring and how many times I applied only to be denied the next day), got an interview at McDonald’s but didn’t get that job either (what is so wrong with me I can’t get hired as an adult college student to do a job someone without an education can do, someone who is 15 can do?) it scares me to think about a future where jobs die out. Thankfully I’m in computer science, so I’ll have a chance, but at some point there won’t even be a need for more of them. There’s been insanely high demand for them for generations but apparently it’s not stopped them from creating the greatest shit on the planet. Experience is the most important thing ever, and if it’s impossible to take that first step, how are you ever suppose to get your foot out the fucking door?
OPTION 1: Try a State government job. They have structured Job Classifications Series where you can start at the bottom & progress in the Series of your choice. Plus, the benefit packages are great!
OPTION 2: Learn everything you can about Blockchain Technology & learn to Code & Design it. (Public & Private sector are just looking into implementing it. Go for Public/State jobs for more security, as many private companies will rise & fall with this new technology..)
OPTION 3: Work for the Post Office. You can live anywhere, great benefits & some jobs don't even require a high school diploma. For real! (Delivery jobs cannot completely be automated away.) There are Companies who will greatly increase your odds of getting hired by the Post Office for a fee (practice tests, etc.)
OPTION 4: Check your State government for "Apprentice Programs." You get PAID while you LEARN over a 2 or 4yr program with zero debt & a near automatic hire into the Union that trained you.

• Walmart the world's largest retailer announced Tuesday that it is adding thousands of new robots to its stores. By next February, it expects to have autonomous floor scrubbers in 1,860 of its more than 4,700 US stores. Walmart will also have robots that scan shelf inventory at 350 stores. And there will be bots at 1,700 stores that automatically scan boxes as they come off delivery trucks and sort them by department onto conveyer belts. Walmart said that it would bring 16-foot-tall pickup towers - automated vending machines that quickly fetch customers' online orders - to 900 new stores this year.
o Other retailers and grocery chains are bringing on robots in their stores to reduce costs and assist workers, too. Giant Food Stores is placing "Marty," a tall, gray robot with googly eyes, in all of its 172 grocery stores. The bot roams around stores looking for spills.
Walmart's 920-pound self-driving floor scrubbers, called the "Auto-C," use automated technology to navigate custom routes around the store and mop up the floors. The machine relies on sensors to scan for people and aisles. Walmart tested it at 360 stores before deciding to roll it out to an additional 1,500 locations.
o Walmart also has been running an experiment at 50 stores with "Auto-S," a shelf-scanning robot. The bot travels around aisles and identifies which items are low or out of stock and makes sure that prices and product labels are accurate. That information is important to help Walmart squeeze out sales. That bot will soon be in 300 more stores.
o Walmart experimented with a bot in around 500 stores that unloads boxes off delivery trucks and automatically scans and sorts the items by department. Walmart says the unloader saves time and has reduced worker turnover in the labor-intensive back areas of the store. So it's bringing it to 1,200 new stores.
o Walmart says all three robots will soon share data with each other to get products to the shelves more quickly and ensure aisles are clean and fully stocked.
o Walmart has said that it will reduce the hours it assigns workers to unloading boxes and mopping the floors. Store workers spend two to three hours a day driving a floor scrubber through a store using the manual machines, said a company spokesman last year. The automatic conveyor belts cut the number of workers needed to unload trucks by half, from around eight to four workers, said executives.
o That will lead to some employee attrition over time, Walmart said. The company said the addition of a single machine can cut a few hours a day of work previously done by a human, or allow Walmart to allocate fewer people to complete a task, a large saving when spread around 4,600 U.S. stores. "As we evolve, there are certain activities, certain jobs that'll go away," Walmart US CFO Michael Dastugue said at an analyst conference last month.
