I recommend the air 2, with fly more to all beginners. The mini series are nice, but eventually a UAV pilot will want more from it. Might as well save up and start with the Air 2.

Eddie Nunez not if you wang to travel. There are SO many regulations evolving around the world, it’s not fun anymore. Just take a look at canada, it’s crazy. In many countries the magic number is 250g, and if you stay below that, many rules and regulations don’t apply. The mini 2 is a drone for those countries, for europeans and people traveling, who don’t want to register their drone or make a piloting license like in Canada...

If you want to fly a drone in EU you need to register if the drone that you are flying has a camera, or isn't certified as a toy. Flying sub 250 grams drones you don't need to take an online course. Starting 1.1.2021. I need to register, take an online class and attend a lesson to fly the air 2 here in Finland...

I have two Mavic Air 2 and two Mini 2 drones that I fly often. IMO by far, the best first drone for the beginner is the Mini 2. The lack of optical avoidance is a good thing in a first drone because you learn to fly it properly and not rely on sensors to keep you out of trouble. The Mini 2 is also lower cost where you can eventually eBay sell it to move up to the Mavic Air 2 if desired for little additional cost. Having said that, irrespective of cost, IMO the best

one big difference is for europe, with its new drone rules, a mini 2 can fly everywhere, an air 2 is only permitted 50 to 150 m from human and houses, so only at deserted areas, and mini2 inside cities , so the less quality isnt so important if its forbidden to fly

249 g all day, it has the same wind resistance as the Air 2, who was my previous drone, sold it and bought the mini 2, with almost the same battery time and wind resistance and the freedom that 249 g brings it's just chill. These cameras may be amazing but when it comes to quality 90% of the people or maybe even more are going to be watching all these videos and pictures on social media so the differences in cameras even 1080 versus 4K nobody can really tell the difference.. unless you are with the person you're showing the pictures to and you put them side by side zoom in and all that stuff that's never going to happen in real life!
Social media is the way the world watches and sees videos and pictures
And this theory has been proven over and over again with AB comparisons between cheap drones from DJI and the most expensive ones when not even the so-called best camera enthusiasts could tell the difference and pick which one was taking the videos and pictures especially if it's not side by side.

Realtor here - Billy is correct in summary parts- two points he made are right on for me: in post I have to zoom up lots of times to get a close up of our subject and don't want to run the danger of flying into a tree so the higher mp is worth the extra price - to me. second, the unit - the Air is better as it can fly in more windy conditions. I started a year ago w a Mini 1 - learned to fly it and got lots of great vids and pics and lots of experience. But, many days I can not fly as wind is to high,,, 25 MP gusts and up plus again, i stay back from trees and wires so i need to zoom closer in both videos and stills - So, I am upgrading to an Air very soon - just waiting now for the Air 2s to come out. Again, nothing against the mini just have learned i need more MP and stronger unit against the wind - this guy rocks tanks - talks fast too, luv it LOL

IMHO, you can't go wrong buying either one if you are beginner. Buy what fits your budget or your needs....you'll enjoy flying either one! Of course, I'm biased. I've only owned DJI drones, and I have no experience with other manufacturer's drones. I've been flying drones for 6 years and started with the DJI Phantom 2. Today's drones are SO MUCH more capable and offer a lot of "bang for the buck!"

As someone who bought the Mini 2 with alot of reviews pointing to or saying "The mini 2 will make you a better pilot, and help you learn how to fly" because of its lack there of sensors, it really really sucks when you're practicing and inadvertently plow the front of the drone into a tree and completely destroy your $600 investment.

(+) Bigger motors (for more flying power and speed)
    (+) Slightly bigger battery performance
    (+) Obstacle Avoidance
Another things that he didn't mention about Mavic Air 2, which doesn't really matter actually, when it comes to be the options for beginners :
(+) Mavic Air 2 has internal storage, so you don't have to use microSD card
(+) Mavic Air 2 can change the transmission automatically for slightly better signal stability, although both of them has Occusync 2.0, which make this doesn't really matter

Great Video. For EU, from 2021 both need to be registered. For the Air 2 you need a Drone Pilots Licence. From mid 2023 the rules get even tougher for the Air 2, not having future remote ID, then only being allowed with even greater, increased safety distances to humans, buildings and roads. The legislative regulated the consumer market under 1kg/2kg class to death. (The former 2017 threshold). Then fortunately/unfortunately, depending which you like better at this point, the Mini 2 prevails in the sub-250 grams not being required to have that. The fines in the Netherlands is up to 8700 EUR.

I had the Inspire 1 previously and lost it in a house fire. Although it was a fantastic drone in many ways (in it's day), it's absolute downfall was size. I previous to that had a Phantom and it was still clumsy to transport in a recreational setting. Where I live in Canada, we have many outdoor activities and several of those are in winter. After watching many of these reviews, for me, the mini appears to be a size that I can carry inside my parka to keep warm and ready for colder flying (I use to fly my Inspire in well below freezing temps, but had to heat the batteries on the dash defrost of a vehicle). I can see the mini coming with me on a snowmobile, hiking, skiing, etc and be able to keep it warm for when I want to use it. In my experience, convenience will almost always win over similar performance. I also lost all my full-frame camera equip in the fire and replaced with micro 4/3rd's and love the convenience and especially weight.

Just deciding between mini 2 or Air 2. Was originally tempted by Air 2 but seems mini may be better as will be my first drone and it has less restrictions. I see they are both 4000 video. I have noticed though that the mini seems to jump slightly in some demonstration videos as it moves around rather than being smooth. Is this because of 30fps as opposed to the 60fps of the Air? Or is it perhaps just something happening in videos where the light is not optimal? Any insights appreciated. (By the way the mini didn’t jump in the above comparison that I noticed, but has in some other videos I’ve seen)

Hi. I would like to learn to fly drones from zero. Which is the right choice? Which has the less risky more pleasent learning experience. I would go for the Mini 2, but having all those sensors to avoid obstacles, the Air 2 is very attractive and reassuring to avoid catastrophic crashes, behave better with windy conditions, and having a more robust construction! I would appreciate your advice!

Off topic, but I think a real important topic (and I feel that you and Originaldobo and Russ of 51 probably know this) ... how is the best way to find out and keep up with the local and the state "law", "rules" and/or "ordinances" that trump FAA rules and regulations concerning drone flights. I appreciate any and all info you can provide on this. I'm pretty sure that other 107'ers would like to be up on this topic too. Cheers, Chuck (North East Florida) ... ":+ )

Hey Billy. I've watched your videos for a while now, and you make some great content with extremely high value. Do you have, or could you make, a video outlining the real world pros and cons of having to register with the local flight authority? I see so many people list it as an absolute con, but really can't see the downside. I don't have all the angles, so some experienced review might be helpful. Thanks, and keep up the great content!

Hey Billy, thank you for this content. I know this is an older post, but last year I was considering the mini 2 but did not pull the trigger. Now the mini 3 with avoidance and other features looks attractive. My sole purpose of purchasing my first drone would be for recreational purposes, use out when gravel cycling, around the house or at a park. I noticed the Mavic air 2 (not s version) price is attractive vs the new mini 3. Would the air 2 be more than adequate for my purposes? Or am I looking over anything vs the mini 3 other than weight? thanks in advance for you feedback.

Dont worry, the Mini 3 will have everything, obstacles avoidance on the front, back and sides, fly farther and faster with a more powerful motors and quieter, it will work with the smart controller and have a 1 inch sensors with a lot more quick shots and a ton load of options while it still maintains the below 250g weight. ok time to wake up..lol

    • @FondelMikeRotch
      @FondelMikeRotch 3 года назад +4

The front sensor is not needed. It just improves your pilot skills, you have to have proper control of your drone. Counting on a front sensor that is monitored by your camera view is being lazy and leaves you to get distracted.

I have already the Mavic 2 Pro .... but I am undecided between the Air 2 and the Mini 2 .... I might go with the Air 2 because of the Combo with the Smart Controller that I could use as well with my Mavic 2 pro...Also the Air 2 have 34 minutes of flying ..But in reality , How many minutes can you get from the Air 2 ? Also I like the smaller size of the Air2 compare to the Mavic 2 Pro.Air 2 is also small enough for traveling I think.
