I have a Canadian 1/2 stack from 1983. Complete time capsule rig. Maybe 20 hours on the original tubes. Incredible tone and no hum and virtually no hiss when preamp and master are dimed. My semi-famous guitar player friend says it is the best amp he has ever played.
Great stuff Jason! You made this amp sound awesome, and arguably better than when it left the factory all those years ago. Cant wait to get stuck into my 2204 and give it the Headfirst treatment!!
Just picked up one of the last vertical input jcm 800s early 84 2204 completely stock about 6 weeks ago in Perth couldn't believe my ears and a true gem to play great vid
i have learned so much from watching this video. thanks for going into detail on how you went about dong things, what and where things were and what to look for! it will help immensely with my amp tweaking!
Wow That JCM 800 Rocks! The more i think about it the JCM 800 are a work horse for sure! One thing everybody this guy he know how to repair a amp and its done right!
my old amp awesome amps..i liked how the gain structure was slightly edgier then my plexi. i used them in stereo for this monster tone and played pubs in the 80s like this haahahahahaa..whats weird is people didnt say we were to loud they actually loved it and in our city we were easily the most popular. I had a girl that used to stand in front of my cabs and i said why do you torture yourself she said i just love the raw sound and she was non musical..i think times have changed so much that now were kinda generic copy cat and soft weaker species..ps loving my origin mod i learnt from you jason your a awesome tech cheers....oh yes the 2204 i used tube screamer or my dean markly warlock.it was still a plexi in a way
Musos corner newcastle were the last people to service amp, when I 1st bought it mick Sampson from newcastle serviced it,the guy that used to build baez amps.hope rick enjoys that amp as them 800,s are total rock machines
Thank you for this awesome video. I put a 8.2k 2w resistor. It sounds better now. With a little more sag. Which kind of IR do you use to have this amazing sound ? Thank you !
I kinda liked the extra 10k & 470 treble snubber 😅 Sounds killer regardless I recently got an ‘87 2204 with a “good”’tube buffered effects loop installed. My tech said it was a good mess style one. He said it appears to be stock, but it’s so much nastier sounding than my ‘15 2203x. He said it measures 51w output on clean and around 70w on the driven channel…..is/was that common ?
@@HeadfirstAmps I liked the multimeter at the bench from a few months back. I got some really good tips out of that one. Might even have saved that windsor I'm, ever so slowly, modding. I keep thinking "what would Jason do?"
Sounds good! Didn't care for the last couple videos and that one OT seemed to have issues as not bringing the goods you'd expect, but at least you made better. I saw the -45V+ and said....bias is going to come up cold...but was shocked at how cold that thing was and why farting out. Looks like the old Ken Fisher -40V bias rule still holding merit! It's in good shape now and voltages where they need to be, for sure! Yes, Joey Voltage is pretty much always right! :O lol He always gives very good advise. Listen closely.
I am having a hell of a time finding the cap for my fuses on my 2205 early '80s jcm 800 50 watt. Dual channel this thing was and is awesome! So I need to get it working again. The fuse caps that were sent to me by some company out of England were too small... Do you have an idea what size fuse capsis would be the fuses in the back are 500 ma and 3 amp. HT if that means something special.? Thank you ahead of time.
Have you ever seen a 1982 Jcm 800 2204 with Green Tolex and Basket weave on the face plate covering? I got one recently and was wondering if that was just an option at the time? I saw a picture of one from 1986 with horizontal inputs. Thanks!
I've had them both one the bench. The reissue is a faithful reproduction, with the exception of the FX loop. But if you bypass it, you'll get proper 2003 tones from a 2203x.
What impulse response are you using? Also, I have a SC20H and it doesn’t seem to have anywhere near as much gain (stock for stock) as this amp. I wonder why not?
When describing knob positions on an amp with clearly labeled 1-10 you can just say 6 and a half instead of 12:30 like you were saying as that clock face only hinders Marshall and fender amp users as both amps are clearly labeled 1-10 🤷🏻♀️😜👍🥂
Great stuff Jason! You made this amp sound awesome, and arguably better than when it left the factory all those years ago. Cant wait to get stuck into my 2204 and give it the Headfirst treatment!!
There it is: the mighty Marshall rock tone. Excellent dude.
Quality amp, fixable forever. Love Ur style, keep it up 🦖

Thanks mate waited a long time must say worth the wait
I just picked up an 84 2204. Im so excited to get it back from my tech. :)
Awesome, renewed interest in an 800. Always liked them.

Sounds spot on man. Love it. Loved the time lapse work too. 🤘
Good find man, it's a keeper
It is a magic of course, that such old radio technics still valuable, from nowadays it looks primitive, I mean look from inside.
Great playing

Interesting history. What did musos corner do, service wise?
gave it a thumbs up at the very beginning bc i knew it would be great
Thanks Steve!
Great stuff as always Jason. Thank you for giving us this information.
My pleasure!
Sounds killer now. Why anyone would want to mod these classics is beyond me. Love your work.
I know man, clones are great for tinkering and modding. The classics are best restored!
Thank you for this awesome video.

Thank you !
Sounds great, that really came out well.
Thanks!
excellent explanation man! 👏😊
Pd: Can you tell me the brand of the nose pliers you use?
thank you so much! 🙋🏻♂️
Good job on the restore!
Thanks!

Sounds awesome mate great job!!!
Thank you for showing standard service jobs as well as all the modding vids. Any chance of getting some shop talk vids, do's-and-don't kinda style?
Sure can, happy to take suggestions if you've got some.

Hey Robb, exactly man. That thread on sloclone, we were both in on that one!
How did you check the filter caps ?
My 800 has no sound ? Any ideas ? Checked all the simple stuff.

You you mean the plastic screw in caps rather than capacitors??
Wish mine sounded like that

I definitely worked on a few with the basketweave front panel, they were black tolex though.
@@HeadfirstAmps Thank you! I love your channel!
thanks!!
Great vid, really well done bravo….
However I am left with an overwhelming need for Chinese food and a jam!! Great sound track
Ha, you watched enough of it then. lol
Amazing! Can you share what speaker cab and speakers you were using?
Thanks! Sure, this clip was the Suhr Reactive Load with an Ownhammer GNR IR loaded into the AXE-FX III
Great videos i have learnt lots, I have a quiestion, the differences in this amp was done by someone else or 1983 amps were different than the rest ?
This one had definitely been tweaked/modded by someone else. Poorly too!
Hello great video! Have you ever compared an original jcm800 2203 with the 2203x reissue?. if yes there are differences?
I've had them both one the bench. The reissue is a faithful reproduction, with the exception of the FX loop. But if you bypass it, you'll get proper 2003 tones from a 2203x.
Did you play it straight in after the restoration? That's the way I would have liked to have heard it. And I think Marshall should reissued this amp.
3:24 is straight in, nothing in front
What impulse response are you using? Also, I have a SC20H and it doesn’t seem to have anywhere near as much gain (stock for stock) as this amp. I wonder why not?
Probably from the Ownhammer GNR pack. As for your SC20H, not sure why. Maybe try replacing V1.
Very nice and competent riffing...! Gorgeous sound. That guitar, what brand and model is that? Cheers, Magnus, Sweden
Hi Magnus, thanks. It's a Knaggs Kenai, Eric Steckel signature model.
@@HeadfirstAmps Aha, I didn't know that brand at all. Although I knew Mr Steckel, of course....!
Sounds badass! What speakers or ir are you using? Thank you

So where’s the video of hearing it stock after the re-work?
3:24
@@HeadfirstAmps lol, I totally missed that you said it was stock then, even with subtitles. Doh..thanks for the clarification
!/2 watt dropping resistor on the second node ? why not a 1 or 2 watt metal oxide instead?
1/2 watt? I never use 1/2 watt for power droppers.
"He's right, he's always right." Isn't that the truth in regard to Joey.
