    Still one of the most beautiful choir pieces, even though it has been 30 years since I’ve had the absolute pleasure of singing it. How I will always cherish it and the memories it evokes.💗

    We sang this in high school with an excellent director that emphasized dynamics and staying on key. Just kept thinking sharp and we ended on key. Thompson was a choral genius--just a magnificent piece. And this is a very nice performance.

      @@garvinw6791 @Hrmesing This is quite a popular piece & about as close being a universal staple of choral repertoire as any choral work!
      It was composed to be performed by an entire student body (certainly not all "singers") after only one rehearsal- that's why there's only one word! Of course you still remember it, it's very simple & easy!
      That is NOT meant as a criticism of the piece whatsoever! In fact, the other reason you remember it is because it is beautiful & emotionally captivating, and all of the parts are very well written to be melodic...

    Thought of this song tonight and decided to look for a performance. I sang this while I was in a mixed chorus in a PUBLIC high school in NY in 1964. I doubt any public school would allow that today, which is unfortunate. I remember memorizing my part, 2d tenor, as we performed without sheet music. That was in 1964 and I still remember singing it, it was such a beautiful piece. The South Dakota Choir did it justice!

    Thank you for your compliment! I can't speak for all high school choirs but I'd say it's safe to assume most college choirs perform much more throughout any given school year than a high school choir. Add to that the fact that many of the singers in a college choir are music majors who are already memorizing buttloads of music and you find that memorizing everything becomes less realistic. You can expose a college choir to more music at a much quicker pace if you aren't always trying to memorize

      I LITERALLY CANNOT WAIT TO BE IN A COLLEGE CHOIR, IM ALWAYS THINKING ABOUT LEARNING NEW SONGS IN THE MIDDLE OF LEARNING OTHER ONES!! I'm starting as a freshman this year studying music in college and I'm auditioning for the chamber choir. I doubt i'll make it, given that freshmen are admitted on rare occasions, but what should stop me from trying?

      Nicely performed - it is part of my playlist. However I not sure I agree with your assessment about sheet music in front of choral performances.. I believe memorization of the words & most important the musical voice line is crucial to the music. But most importantly in well disciplined choirs their eyes are focused entirely on the conductor, not turning pages & looking at words or their own musical line part. If a conductor is truly expressive with his hands & face and demands eye attention, lstening focus & phrasing, it is crucial for a fine performance. I think if they are well practiced & rehearsed they don't require the music in front of them. A Joyous Noel to You & Yours! Now that I am a collegiate conductor, I agree that I would like my ensemble to sing as much from memory as possible, but stand by my statement 10yr ago that it isn’t always feasible under all circumstances. I also wonder that-if it’s crucial for a fine performance that the music be memorized-doesn’t that imply that most instrumental ensembles are incapable of producing a fine performance?

    • @leosworld4u
      @leosworld4u 9 месяцев назад +1

      Thanks for your reply. I can only say that the choral organizations at Concordia & St Olaf, probably among the top college choirs in the World I think you would agree, never perform with sheet music in front of them as well as many other fine choirs I have heard live and on videos - why it that? As far as intrumental music is concerned that is a whole different ball game I do believe, but maybe if they learned to memorize from the beginning that might change, eh? It is only my thoughts & observations, I am not a musical scholar like you. Best Christmas wishes to you & your Family. A Joyous Noel to You & Yours! beautiful performance... but what is so hard about getting off paper on this? I sang this in high school... we were off paper when we performed it (unbeknownst to our fearless director) when he announced that we were about to perform a difficult song not normally attempted by many college choirs due to the dynamics, we all closed our folders and put them on the risers in unison then began to sing.
    This is a beautiful performance and kudos to the choir.

      Your choir director was not being especially genuine... LOL
      This piece is ubiquitous in the American choral repertoire- virtually everyone performs this. And, it was specifically composed NOT to be difficult because it was to be performed by an entire student body (many of whom were not 'singers') after only a single rehearsal.

      @DJJonPattrsn22 4 года назад

      "A whole half-tone" LOL!
      Really?! Who says that?
      So, would you say their pitch fell by half a semi-final instead of a quarter-tone? If so, why the convoluted and unnecessary complication involving the multiplication of fractions?!
      Losing "A whole half step" over the course of 5 minutes is something that very few people without absolute pitch would be able to perceive consistently without the aid of any external pitch reference (including themselves humming along).
      Your comment is basically just bitter, petty, empty criticism. The fact that their sinking pitch was so gradual that only one other individual claimed to notice it serves as good evidence supporting my assessment!

      @DJJonPattrsn22 4 года назад

      @@carolineb.5280 Really?! That makes no sense whatsoever! LOL
      How could you possibly notice "immediately" something which happens gradually over the course of the entire anthem!?
      If something was off from the beginning, then perhaps they didn't actually go flat at all? LOL
      Or perhaps they started off half of a semi-final tone flat, and then lost two thirds of a whole tone? !?

Unfortunately, this is what you get for acoustics when you let mathematicians and computer scientists design performance halls, not for live performance, but for recording and 'all round' duty.
