  • One of my favorite techniques for calming the mind is a pranayama (or yoga breathing) technique called Kapalabhati (or power breathing). Why?
As our breath moves, do does our mind. HOW we are breathing is playing a role in how the brain is responding to the present "perceived" moment with a cascade of various biochemical and physiological responses.
A 5 to 10 minute breathing practice of Kapalabhati raises alpha brain wave activity eliciting a sense of calmness. We tend to lose the amount of focus we were placing our attention to and bring ourselves into the present moment.
There are some contraindications for this technique. Things like high or low blood pressure, heart disease, hernia, gastric ulcer, epilepsy, vertigo, migraine headaches, significant nosebleeds, detached retina, glaucoma, history of stroke, and for anyone who has undergone recent abdominal surgery. HAVING SAID THAT, UNDER THE PROPER SUPERVISION, IT CAN ACTUALLY HELP BLOOD PRESSURE AND HEART DISEASE CONDITIONS. JUST NEEDS TO BE DONE JUDICIOUSLY WITH SOMEONE WHO UNDERSTANDS THE BREATHING PRACTICE.
