Long time watcher, first time comment and subscribe. What you guys are doing with this video is incredible and beyond helpful. Thank you! It's unheard of to revisit "old" cameras because they lack the sex appeal of the cutting edge, but as a consumer I'm way more interested in the camera as I will use it than being on the bleeding edge. Thank you so much for your update of these older cameras. I sincerely hope that the rest of the industry jumps on board and that you are able to continue leading the way.
    Great job guys!
    Cheers

I'm a software developer... Never worked with cameras though. But a few thoughts!
Buggy early release, I believe we just have to accept that's life. And new features released in the first two firmware updates, they are probably often been in the works for a while but was cut out of release scope because manufacturer did not want to delay product launch. Delivering software on time, correctly estimating needed efforts, anticipating delays caused by others etc is very hard in a complex software product.
One of the developers most open about their software process is Black Magic. From them we know they started with multiple firmware tracks but everything was to be merged into one track. The new improved unified software track was going to be amazing. And they promised users features in the BMPCC which were in the new track, a completely different firmware than what the BMPCC was shipped with. And then happened what almost always happen. The simple switch from old software was much harder than anticipated. BM emailed customers and explained, sorry about the long wait, we'll soon be done. Then suddenly the new firmware track was working and Black Magic could start ship new features in a fast stream.
Probably most companies work in a similar manner, they have a common software track for many cameras and a lot of features can pretty easily be ported to older cameras, it is mostly about ensuring correct configuration and having drivers for all components.
In order for Canon and Nikon to become great firmware shippers, first there must be company support. If management doesn't want time spent on supporting old releases, developers aren't going to spend time on them. Then the development organization needs to be up to the task. If the code base is in a shitty state, doing any development is hell. Bad code kills productivity, you become afraid of change if you know any sane change will cause unexpected insane side effects. Companies that never toss or fix bad code is horrible to work in. And then software development teams need to be good. In some organizations, it simply seems hard to development, while in others you feel empowered by your colleagues and can exceed your own limitations.
So code and culture dictates a lot about of how hard it to work in a company.
And any sane developer wanting to do software development should look at a company; how often do they release software, and how amazing is the software? If they release seldom, and the releases are pointless, it probably caused by both an organizational sickness and horrible code.

I understand some people concern that some companies are releasing unfinished camera products but I would rather buy a camera that I know new improvements will keep coming since there is no perfect camera. One interesting function in nx1 is, once it is connected to your home wifi network, the camera will display a sign on its screen when there is a new firm ware available and you would need to do just one click to download and install it. I think it is a brilliant idea and I hope all other companies do the same.

Thanks for this great video, I have only one question regarding new X-T1 Firmware 4.x AF modes.
In either Zone or Wide/Tracking modes, When half-pressing shutter release, sometime several autofocus points (green boxes) are highlighted in green showing they achieved focus - my question is: which one of those boxes the camera is actually locking into for the exposure ?
Sometimes there will be several boxes highlighted in a zone or wide/tracking - some will lock on objects in the front and some locked on objects in the rear - when I fully press the shutter release - which of those boxes is actually used by the camera as the focus point ?
Couldn't find explanation for this in all Fuji manuals

Three years after its release, Canon updated the 7D to have 23 raw depth up from 15. Also added custom auto iso and the ability to rate images. I would say that is a pretty good firmware update especially for a 3 year old camera.

Andy Hodapp Yeah but this was an odd one out. I'm saying that as a Canon user.
The lack of extra features in updates would be perfectly fine, *if only they had competitive functionality/features right from the start*.
I'm pretty dissatisfied with Canon right now. They're clearly not embracing mirrorless like they should and consistently lag behind the competition when it comes to functionality and more importantly: sensor quality. Canon is pretty much dead last in the sensor tech race right now.

It seems like (and Sony have already implemented it) that cameras are going to be a platform for selling software (or apps) maybe in a "pay-as-you-go" or annual subscriptions model. So for a new function, you don't necessarily have to go buy a new camera but simply "link your credit card to your camera" and you can buy new features/functions when they become available OR when you need them.

May I ask you guys to complain about the OMD-EM5 and OMD-EM1 line video capabilities? It has worked so well with Fujii, Samsung, Sony and it could be the right way to ask Olympus a fw update on the video side(increase mbps,25+50/60p, flat profiles).
That 5 Axis IBIS is a godsend for the run&gun shooter, why not push it to it's limits also in video mode.

Great video as normal. Would love to see which current'ish cameras are most in need of a firmware update and why (my personal thought is the D800 never felt like a finished camera and still doesn't). It was interesting the response on Nikon rumours when they thought that Nikon were going to have a page dedicated to to firmware (beyond the normal fix) and how people didn't particularly mind even if Nikon charged something for the firmware update.
I know I am not the first to mention it but the Canon 7D's firmware update was really good. My assistant had the camera and I was massively impressed with Canon for doing this (its a pity they didn't do it more often).
Adding the firmware updates, does make a big difference for me. I bought an X-E1 just to dip my toe into Fuji and have been massively impressed with the firmware upgrades and I know I will be upgrading my Fuji to either a X-T1 or X-T10 in September and start buying Fuji lenses because their autofocus is now working (where as I normally use manual for my XE-1). So Fuji is on a major win, whilst Nikon who I have been with for 15 years will probably lose out of this as I will probably only buy a D800 upgrade when the upgrade to the replacement for the D810 comes along because Nikon cannot be trusted with new releases.

I really hope Samsung gives NX1 a proper Log profile like X-Log or something so we get 13 - 14 stops of dynamic range in video.
I also wish they gave us 240 fps in 720p or something similar, it would be really appreciated.
And damn they need to make the brackets visible on the light metre cause right now I am struggling to shoot with bracketing.

15:16 I have a GH4 and an Atomos Ninja 2 recorder (I use 4K downconvert to 1080p 10-bit 4:2:2 via HDMI output) I found that adding a LUT to the V-Log L footage, doesn't matter what LUT, that this makes chromatic aberrations really show up on the edges of thin lines (mainly green or red and sometimes purple or blue), which is odd since these chromatic aberrations were either not there or barely visible at al in the unedited footage and don't show up if I edit the footage manually without adding a LUT or changing the input color space on the video in Davinci Resolve. I even had a LUT plugin for Sony Vegas (I use Pro 13) and found the same issue with adding LUTs, so I just avoid them.

I think this was a great subject to talk about. Just an idea for these companies, they should make these updates like the cell phone co. do, an OTA, just press the button & it's updated. I'm not the greatest when it comes to this but I'm not an idiot either & I couldn't update the firmware on my RX100 m2, u go on Sony's site & follow that whole page word for word & it doesn't work people get discouraged. If they can make the process easier like the cell phone industry does then they should.

I'm using Olympus XZ-2 for the last couple of years. Last year I started to get really frustrated by the poor low light AF speed. I constantly had to switch to MF, which is relatively easy on that camera, but still not perfect. I was about to sell it when it occurred to me that there might be a firmware update... you know, like with the Fujis. And yes, there was. In fact it was already available when I bought the camera but the store didn't update it. After the update it felt much better and usable. And I have my camera registered with Olympus - they could've just notified me that there was a firmware update at some point and if I have it.

I had the X-T1 and was very happy with it, specially the manual video update. But the video quality wasn't that great, and peaking went off when youbstarted recording. So I went for the NX1, and I'm very happy with this also, and making the Cinema D perofile flat makes it capture so much information. It still has some problems that really annoy me though. With adapted lenses, for stills, peaking turns off every time you touch the shutter button, which is very annoying in use. For video, you can't turn peaking on when recording using the EVF, which is a drag. There are some other minor things, like let us format to exFAT for smaller cards than 64GB. With exFAT you get 29:59 recording time, without you below 9 minutes for a single recording, and you can fit just over an hour on a 32GB card, so it needs exFAT. And yet with these faults, it's still an amazing camera :)

theSUBVERSIVE ill give you that some of the apps are included by default in other cameras but you won't find them on a Sony body :( it would be good if the Timelapse was built in but purchase once and its available on all your cameras. Things like the touch less EVF shutter is a cool addition, again it feels like it should of been a firmware update but I never knew I wanted such a feature.

I work in embedded products (direct experience with Samsung and Sony) and this topic isn't a 'technical" one. These are consumer products and it simply requires manufacturer commitment to longer product (perhaps system) life-cycles.
As Jordan says, the 'small companies' are forced to 'put out' just to compete, but those companies know consumer retail better than anyone else and are extremely aware of this situation. Decades of experience (and their corporate culture) demonstrate that they will eat your lunch the moment they can. While we're encouraged by the potential of modifiable FW, they do little to allay concerns that these companies are in it for anything but product churn.

These guys forget the 7D firmware that came out after like 4 years
Thanks to the new firmware which adds powerful memory management algorithms taken from Canon's flagship EOS-1 series, photographers will now be able to enjoy greater flexibility in continuous shooting, with the maximum RAW buffer now extended to a new high of 25 RAW files or 130 JPEGs.
Improved maximum burst for RAW images (up to 25)
    In-camera RAW image editing
    In-camera Image Rating
    In-camera JPEG resizing
Maximum Auto ISO setting (ISO 400-6400)
Manual audio level adjustment in movie recording
    GPS compatibility
    File name customisation
    Time zone settings
    Faster scrolling of magnified images
    Quick control screen during playback
This is good they could of just kept the algorithms for their new cameras but they did make the firmware for a old camera.

TheCameraStoreTV you guys are right though the big company's can focus on profits while releasing new features on newer models and splitting features into many cameras, while the smaller guys add as many features as possible into fewer cameras as they don't have the market safety to make and sell so many different models like the big companions.
This is all good news because this will force more competition to add features in all models of a companies cameras.
A7RII looks like it will cause a lot of competition based on what they added to the camera while Canon has to make 3 cameras to do what A7RII does alone High ISO,4K video, High MP and things that Canon lacks in like DR.

I'm a bit surprised Samsung hasn't updated the NX1 with the ability to use h264, since h265 is easily the number one thing people seem to be complaining about.

Its telling that Chikon is coming in last. Makes the case that when you upgrade look to Samsung, Sony, Fuji and Panasonic. My personal interest is Landscape and if Sony can create uncompressed RAW with Zeiss lenses there is no reason to look at Nikon or Canon. Its a tool to reach a goal! Thanks for being the voice of the Public.

Another thing that bugs me is always seeing TheCameraStore complaining about the NX1's auto focus capabilities in video mode. Try the GH4 auto focus in 4K: It hunts a lot and Panasonic isn't able to fix this issue with their firmware updates. Perhaps the GH4 lacks the needed processing power to correct the focus in 4K mode. It seems to be a huge oversight for me.

o0PGJ0o We mentioned the lackluster GH4 AF in our final review. The difference is that no one is talking about GH4 video AF, but there's a lot of hype about how good NX1 video AF is. I was very underwhelmed by it in every NX1 video test I've done, and find Canon Dual Pixel AF to be the best video AF implementation available.

But that's not V-log vs S-log thing, it's more about the DR of each sensor.

So is speedlooks primarily for VLog footage? It looks pretty awesome but I wanted to know if I should wait for the gh4 VLog firmware before I purchased it. Also what's the different between speedlooks studio and speedlooks studio and linear? Thanks!

    • @TheCameraStoreTV
      @TheCameraStoreTV  9 лет назад

Daniel Parow There isn't a V-Log profile for SpeedLooks yet, but I used the Alexa LUT. If you want to work with Log files from any manufacturer, you want the Studio edition. The Linear package is for non-log video files, from straight-out-of-camera or lightly modified profiles. Great LUTs though, check them out!

Your video is good as always.
    i have a question:
which camera do you recommend for both stills and video?
what about Olympus omd em-5 II .
If I buy a camera like Gh4 or Nx1 with 4K, do i need 4k TV or computer.

Another bad example of an unfinished camera was the Sony A77. As much as I love Sony and loved the A77, the first versions were absolutely unacceptable slow in operation, all the controls had lag etc. And that for a camera that is able to process 12fps. They fixed it far later in a firmware update, but it was really unacceptable that it was released that way in the first place and took several firmware versions to fix it.

Not sure about Sony. I have the original a7. I think we got a slightly quicker start up time and support for some new lenses in about 1 year and a half. Seems like they forgot about the camera since the a7s and a7II came out. If the a6000 got XAVC-S, it may just be because the a7000 got delayed and they were risking not selling a camera that could compete with Samsung?

These guys have said clearly that the Fuji video performance was not up to par, I purchased an M1 with xtrans sensor and it is "killer" for stills, that is why I bought it.
For video I have the FZ1000 which rocks for video, at a much better cost than the GH4 for my usage. Thats it from here, enjoy!

Fantastic content of this video guys!
More significantly to me, I think this is the BEST video image quality I've seen on any of your videos to date. Up until this one I was thinking that the FS7 was still eeking out a slim lead in terms of best IQ, but to me the IQ and especially the colors are even better than the FS7.
I do have some questions of course, the biggie of the bunch is whether you shot this in 1080? 1080 is the highest resolution I have available here, and secondly, I prefer this IQ of this just like I prefer the 1080 IQ of my GH4 over the IQ of my GH4 shooting 4K..... So I guess I expect that you either shot this in 1080 at the 200Mbps rate, or you shot it in 4K and crunched it to 1080? It looks phenomenal!!
Veydra primes again? If yes, then I guess the zoom in at 15:51 was a zoom into crop... Maybe that means that you shot in 4K and crunched it to 1080.
Either way, I'm so excited for my GH4 again! Gimme my damn firmware Panasonic! Lol

TheCameraStoreTV Thanks Jordan! I guess the squeezing down to 1080 helped, because this video was BEAUTIFUL. I have had decent luck squeezing my 4K stuff down to 720 since I haven't needed more than 720 for those projects. I'm excited to shoot some V log footage now!

This comment comes from the perspective of a photographer, not a videographer. I want to mention that the use of firmware updates to an initially good design, allows me to retain that body longer. Instead of spending money to shift systems, I can add lenses (and perhaps flash and macro accessories) to my system. That can mean just as much extra sales and cash flow for the manufacturers, while making me a better photographer. I personally have concentrated on the Olympus and Fuji bodies, and now have 12 m4:3 lenses and 9 X-mount lenses. Several years ago, when I hopped from Canon mount to Leica R to Nikon, I never really made any "headway" on glass.

Amen on the faith aspect that Fuji customers get to feel. These guys are doing it right and others could learn a lot from them.
I yank on about Pentax a bit, but they have great hardware to play with, but the software lets them down, and firmware updates from them only fix broken things, or allow compatibility with new lens products, to ensure you can spend more with them. Their video capabilities were pretty good in 2012, but they stopped offering real physical sensor stabilisation during video after the K-5 series. So much potential, with Olympus and Sony now doing Pentaxs strong points better than them.

Question, like when u guys were talking about the a6000, if I purchased that camera today would it be updated by Sony when I took it out of the box or would I have to do the update, I guess that is a all around question, if u buy a camera that's been out for awhile & updates happened, u buy the camera down the line do these companies update the cameras or do they make u do it, is it always 1.0 ?
