    Say what you want about Jordan Peterson. But his mythological view point on the Bible allowed me to get closer to the gospels, and now I’m a full believer. So, there is that.

    • @audioamz
      @audioamz 5 месяцев назад +11

      I was already a believer when I started watching him and at first was frustrated by how close he was without being all in. I would call him "the best accidental evangelist". 😂 but then I really felt like the Lord was telling me to just trust it, as JP is bringing so many secular minds to freshly approach a book they may not have ever even opened or seen as anything other than a fable. Then, I was able to trust that he would indeed lead many to the Lord in a much deeper way than perhaps a single emotional testimony. JP is so incredibly well read... I'm not sure I've heard of anyone who has read as much as that man. And it means more coming from someone who has taken in all the great literary, scientific, historical, and philosophical works and still reaches the conclusions he does on the word of God. A LOT of people NEED that, as they have too many other facts and questions to wrestle with ❤ What a beautiful thing

      There is a reason why Archbishop Fulton Sheen told Bill W., founder of Alcoholics Anonymous, to remain outside of the church when he requested instruction in the faith. Sometimes formal conversion is not indicated and baptism by desire must suffice.

    I also was finishing my doctorate during the 90s when the minimalists were all over the place. Very disheartening, but it also became rather ridiculous, since it was clear that the proponents had little interest in actually listening to evidence. My job during that period was working with a project that photographed ancient inscriptions. Anytime anything was found that actually related to biblical history, there was a huge effort to date it to a late period or explain it away as being something different. In some ways that still has not changed.

    Hi Matt! I am very drawn to your channel. I am a Southern Baptist, but I have been fascinated by Catholicism for many years. The main thing that really holds me back (and I am having a hard time finding the right words here) is the Mary thing. I believe she is the mother of our Savior, but I do not find in my Bible that I should be praying to her. I really want to understand this. Is something you or Thursday(?) could help me understand? Thank you.

      I have had similar thoughts, part of the confusion came from the word choice "Pray" means to ask or beseech, I would say that Catholics "Praying" to Mary is most similar to asking God for an opportunity to speak and grow a relationship with our holy mother, by consequence of her creation as a being who God declared could not be any better, in other words perfect meaning there are few better people to ask for advice, as well as God's love for her being so great that her "Prayers" to God on anyone's behalf are quite powerful, by no means do Catholics mean that Mary is separate from God's power or the same as him, At least that's my understanding I hope it helped you.

      Research the Kingdom of David and how it was set up. Remember that Jesus is the promised successor of David who is setting up a Davidic-style Kingdom. This is why he gives Peter the keys: he's turning over all authority to him (for how that works in a Middle Eastern kingdom, read carefully the authority given to Joseph in Egypt both in Potiphar's house and by the Pharaoh: it is basically total authority without actually *being* the king in person). Then look up the gebirah, the Queen Mother. The Queen was not the wife of the King but his *mother*. Note how Bathsheba is Queen because she is Solomon's mother. It is she who requests that David declare Solomon King while David is still living. Solomon becomes co-king with David (a nice type of God the Father and God the Son, if you will, in this kingdom). Then notice Bathsheba's authority and why she is Queen: it is the Queen Mother who knows and has authority to say that "this one" is the rightful King. It's not that Mary just gave birth to Jesus: she is the ONLY human creature who has the authority to tell us that her Son is the Son of God. Further, look up what happens when someone wants a favor from the king: they go to his MOTHER and Solomon even sets up a throne for her next to his before asking her to make her request. Go deep and notice in the deportation narratives how often we're told a king *and his mother* are taken into captivity. Why? Because those loyal to the king and wanting to restore him would go to his mother as the rallying point: she alone could guarantee that the real king and not an imposter was brought back to power. Likewise, the conquerer wanted to take away the king's mother so that he could take over as king without opposition from the Queen Mother who would be a sign to everyone of the conquerer's illegitimacy. Look at the two visits to the Holy Family in the Gospel. When the low-class shepherds visit, they find mother, father and child. But the Magi are clearly on a state visit. They visit Herod first, as protocol would demand. But when they go to the new Davidic king on their state visit, who do they visit? The king and his mother with him, exactly as they would have found the first successor of David: Solomon on his throne with his mother next to him. Read carefully the prophecy of Elizabeth when Mary visits her: "Who am I that the mother of my Lord (the title David used for the Messiah) should COME TO me?" Of course! The Queen Mother doesn't go to you; you go begging to the Queen Mother! Elizabeth knows her royal protocol! Look at the Wedding in Cana in John's gospel. Mary tells Jesus about a need of some people and he asks, "What is that to you and me?" (check the oldest translations). She doesn't even discuss it with him. She acts like the Queen Mother who whose request naturally will be honored. And further, her command to the servants does exactly what the Queen Mother's role is: she points to her Son as the legitimate King, saying, "Do whatever he tells you." You need to study the Bible and understand how Jesus is creating a new Davidic kingdom. It's why two apostles' MOTHER goes to Jesus and asks for them to sit on his right and left in his kingdom. Pay attention to his answer: those places have already been given by the Father. Now ask yourself sensibly: in heaven, who was the only perfectly faithful disciple of Jesus? Who is likely to be sitting at the right hand if Jesus? Go to Revelation and notice that when the dragon cannot go after the woman's baby, he turns to her other children: US, subjects of the King, to whom we were given Mary as our mother from the Cross. You need to read the Bible with understanding. Just read everything Mary says in the Bible and ask yourself who this woman is. There are good books and audio studies on this.

    • @don7502

      The short answer is there's a miscommunication concerning the meaning of "prayer." If by prayer one means talking directly to God then Catholics would agree we don't pray to Mary (or the saints). If prayer means ask, which is the old english meaning of the term ("I pray thee tell me", "pray tell," etc), then it can be applied to God and creatures. (Longer answer below.)
      The official language of the Catholic Church (see the Catechism) in reference to Mary and the saints is "invocation", to ask for assistance. "Pray to the saints" is colloquial catholic terminology; it's shorthand for asking for their intercession/assistance, but always with the understanding that all gifts ultimately come from God and must be aligned with His will. It's no more an action which sidesteps God's authority anymore than asking those on earth to pray for us or help us sidesteps God authority. For a more biblical defense refer to James 5:16 (who is more righteous than those already in heaven?), Rev 12 (Mary as Queen of heaven), Matthew 22:32 (the saints are alive), Rev 5:8; 8:2-4 (the saints pray for us), John 19:26-27 (Mary, given by Jesus, as mother of the Church).
      (The following is from a comment I found online) Take the Hail Mary, for example, which is the exemplar prayer to Mary:
      "Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amongst women and blest is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
      Holy Mary, mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen."
      The first half of the prayer is a quote from scripture (Luke 1:28, 42). The second portion is a petition to Mary, asking her to "pray for us sinners."

    “Try doing that with a scroll.” It’s very interesting to think about it like this, how a book was such a technological innovation for writing at the time that it was akin to RAM for a computer. This is probably why Christians were referred to as “the people of the book” in many historical accounts, especially in the Middle East. The reason is because we were the only ones who made books, and there was only one book that was made by us. So the phrase “the people of the book” was just as specific as calling someone “a card carrying communist,” in the minds of someone immersed in the culture of that time it conjures an image of a specific kind of person.

    I've wondered if the fact that crucifixion caused the most suffering and was the most torturous way to be killed and was practiced at that time and place factored into the timing of Christ's Incarnation.
    Like that the gravity of humanity's sin is so great that God wanted a drastic picture of what, in mercy and justice, it should cost to redeem us and atone for it.
