- [TW: Mentions of abuse] Even though we’ve talked about our intergenerational trauma repeatedly on this channel, this was the first time hearing some of the things I never knew Mama Mai was feeling and still dealing with. It’s crazy to think how our experiences were so similar. This is why it is so important to talk about these things and address the issues to break the cycle of trauma so it won't repeat itself.

Props to both Jeannie and Mama Mai for trying to confront the behaviors of their parents. 👏🏽👏🏽Letting your parents know that some of their methods did not help raise you in the best way and being able to say that to their face can be so daunting. I'm especially happy that Mama Mai tried to confront her father about it. Although he doesn't acknowledge how he traumatized her, he should hear (just like ALL parents should) that his way was not always right.

However, Mama Mai did the same thing as her dad. She is just now admitting to the trauma she caused. Monaco's dad will never allow that behavior to repeat. I didn't like hearing Mama Mai criticizing a 10-month old child. Thats the way Jeannie and Jeezy chose to raise their child.

She did the same to Jeannie, lucky for her Jeannie has forgiven her and kudos to Mama Mai for acknowledging her wrong, however, she needs to leave the raising of Monaco to Jeannie and Jeezy.

@@HelloHunnay It’s great your mom is willing to do it too. Some parents are too stuck in “I’m the parent, you’re the child and I’m always right” mindset, and it’s very hard to build or repair a relationship off that.

Jeanie, the amount of compassion you show your mom who still is WRONG about the way she listens and reacts to your childhood trauma is beyond.
Mama Mai is trying and it shows! Abuse, a refugee, starting all over in a new country. She has been through SO much, and I can only imagine how much she's hiding because she's still so prideful.

This was healing for me too, Jeanie. My mother and I have a similar relationship to you and your mom. It’s truly a blessing that Mama Mai agreed to therapy and doing the work with you. My mom won’t don’t do it / will NEVER consider it as she’s too prideful and ALWAYS right.
Unfortunately, it’s a culture thing for us too - Most Latinos don’t go to therapy. Ugh. 😞

I am a mom of 13 year old twins. When they were lil I never made them kiss or hug people if they did not want to. I told my children do NOT allow anyone to kiss you on the lips. My Aunt was do upset my daughter gave her cheek to be kissed and not her lips. I told my Aunt no one is to kiss my children on their lips. My children knew from a very young age to put up boundaries with people. Just because you are family don't make you a good person.
I'm a multi-ethnic person and my mother always made me feel I was never pretty enough. My hair is curly, she complained every time she did my hair, she told me I would be fat growing up and I was naturally tiny. When I had my son I remembered this and cried because I could feel all the pain I forgot. Every time I get him ready after bath time I let him know he's so handsome, his beautiful smile just heals my broken heart. Me correcting the wrong done to me, through him has definitely healed my inner child.

Oh my god. I've been reading "What happened to you" by Dr. Bruce Perry and Oprah, "It didn't begin with you," and "The body keeps a scores." And my heart sunk when I heard Mama say she ran away from home and also felt unheard, and it's the same cycle Jeannie went through. Family trauma repeats it self until someone recognises, acknowledges, and breaks it.
Jeannie is such a good communicator! I get so touched every time Mama Mai talks about her childhood trauma because I have seen her growth in becoming less resistent and defensive when Jeannie shares how she experienced Mama Mai as a child. You all are breaking generational curses and Monaco will benefit from the love and understanding.

Jeannie, you are a role model. I feel like you have paved the way for so many people that would have never known this information otherwise to go get help for themselves and their family about this particular kind of generational trauma. you are amazing, and so strong and so brave to be facing this and fighting it instead of turning away and hiding. Mama Mai grew up in a very different time…… based on how she responds to certain things shows this. She is getting better with understanding and sharing her feelings. My heart goes out to her because I can’t imagine being abused in that way by someone who is supposed to love you unconditionally. I am glad you Jeannie are bringing this to the surface and changing the generational trauma of not being able to speak up for yourself. I am glad you two are working together to heal as well ❤️
A lot of us grew up in strict households where you didn't have a voice as a child. We wouldn't dare ask why because we knew what we were going to get. I didn't realize just how much that affected me in life. Listening to these kinds of stories can help us get through it and grow because we know we are not alone. Thank you
This episode had me in tears my mom is a recovering alcoholic and chose to get sober when I had my son in 2020 to help care for him while I work. Our parents have trauma that they never got to let go of I’m so happy for this generation of parents healing our trauma and helping our parents heal theirs ❤❤❤

This episode was great. As a kid, I felt alone and was abused, I no longer talk to a few family members because having them in my life remainds me of how they hurt me as a kid. I haven't fully healed, but looking back, I have come a long way and feel much better.
This episode hit home really hard. 😢 Had me in tears. I grew up in a Haitian household and, just like the Vietnamese upbringing, so many of us have had too many generational curses to break. It can be super painful…
Mama Mai cries about her own experiences, but still struggles to find empathy for her daughter. It’s tough to watch. Notice she rarely cries for Jeannie. When I told my mom about my childhood trauma, she couldn’t stop blaming herself and crying. She felt so much guilt. I don’t see that remorse with Mama Mai. But she’s starting to see her failings, and that’s a good first step.
She’s trying and making baby steps towards progress though, and that’s always positive. Keep up the good work Mama Mai

As a mother of a young adult, I'm learning so much about how to back-off from some of my beliefs and how to listen better and to trust my son's intuition. In my experience growing up, one of the things that hurt me most is that my folks taught me to be quiet out of respect and not to talk back so I was frustrated for not being allowed to stand up for myself. Now, as an adult, it makes me scream and yell in order to be heard, when it often times isn't warranted. Never too late to grow and learn better. I simply adore Mama Mai. From my mom passing I realized how much trauma she suffered and how it passed along. The fact that I've had to forgive both parents as a result of their death always pains me. The beautiful thing in this moment is you both have a chance to discuss and resolve your traumas and foster a beautiful relationship in life. It's such hard work but it's necessary. Keep it going!! That's such a blessing, you should cherish it forever.

same here and I've also realized that to heal myself I need to TALK, the greatest gift anyone can give to themselves

This video is how it impacts your child but you can also explore the impact of these things on YOURSELF and how it affects YOU TO THIS DAY. Some people don't think it does, but until you acknowledge it, it will affect you even if you don't realize it. Love this Jeannie.

Thank you to Mama Mai for being so vulnerable. Recently I had the same conversation with my mother. My grandfather was similar and even after all these years she also remembers the physical abuse disguised as punishment. It was also a lesson in forgiveness because she did not prohibit us from getting to know my grandfather. Time to release and break the generational trauma. Forgiveness is the power to heal ourselves and break free from those chains for a brighter future.

I ❤ this episode. Growing up, I experienced a lot of trauma. I was a senior in college when I learned that my trauma rewired my brain. As a parent and teacher, I am intentional about learning my triggers so that I can be better for my children/ students.
Thank you both for being transparent, which helps others to be transparent and heal.
Thank you Jeannie for having the difficult conversations about your traumas with your mom. I can also appreciate that Mama Mai is also willing. There are many of us, (and im 53 yo) who have yet to get over the hurdle of beginning to have an open, honest conversation with our parents. There's a certain generations that, like Mama Mai's father, believe whatever they say as parents is the last word, and that what they've done is not to be spoken about. It has, and still is doing irrepairable damage to everyone involved. I commend you both.

I see & hear so much of my grandma in your mom (my grandma came to America from Thailand w/ my grandpa back in the 60’s/70’s) and now that I’m on my journey to healing & breaking the cycle, having conversations like this w/ my grandma has been difficult due to the language/cultural barriers.
All this is to say, PLEASE continue this series &/or continue shedding light on this sector of healing generational + cultural trauma for those of us dealing w/ something so specific yet convoluted as this.

Beautiful episode! The growth in both Jeannie and MamaMai's relarionship wrt their past is so very evident. So glad to see MamaMai recognizes those ghosts and does not want to see them repeated. Sad that her father still does not recognize the pain he inflicted.

I love that you and your mom are able to have these discussions. I’ve tried with my mom but she takes no responsibility and it still hurts. This is how healing can begin!
Both my parents (divorced) are the same. Unfortunately, not everyone gets to experience these breakthroughs, and because of that, I was stuck for a really long time. I heard a quote once that helped me change my perspective a bit. It went - "just because something isn't your fault, does not mean it's not your responsibility". I interpreted it as, we can't dwell and stir in pain (or worse, pass on the pain to others) simply because our loved one isn't willing to do the work with us. Although it may not be fair, and the source of pain isn't our fault, we can at least be responsible for taking steps towards healing the best we can and breaking the cycle. You both are doing a great job with communication and talking about your past. I also recognize that you both have a special way of communicating to help each other understand. As parents the child will not always understand why they do things the way they do until they become parents themselves.

Jeannie Mai I’m the same age as you. And it’s only recently that I’ve mended with my mother. We still get into arguments and my mother is hot headed like your mom. Thank you for these talks. The generational gap seems so wide and unmanageable. But with your discussions with a facilitator it seems so possible, so healing, so worth it to hold onto each other. Thank you!
