  • [TW: Mentions of abuse] Even though we’ve talked about our intergenerational trauma repeatedly on this channel, this was the first time hearing some of the things I never knew Mama Mai was feeling and still dealing with. It’s crazy to think how our experiences were so similar. This is why it is so important to talk about these things and address the issues to break the cycle of trauma so it won't repeat itself.

Props to both Jeannie and Mama Mai for trying to confront the behaviors of their parents. 👏🏽👏🏽Letting your parents know that some of their methods did not help raise you in the best way and being able to say that to their face can be so daunting. I'm especially happy that Mama Mai tried to confront her father about it. Although he doesn't acknowledge how he traumatized her, he should hear (just like ALL parents should) that his way was not always right.

When I told my mom about my childhood trauma, she couldn’t stop blaming herself and crying. She felt so much guilt. I don’t see that remorse with Mama Mai. But she’s starting to see her failings, and that’s a good first step.
She’s trying and making baby steps towards progress though, and that’s always positive. Keep up the good work Mama Mai

In my experience growing up, one of the things that hurt me most is that my folks taught me to be quiet out of respect and not to talk back so I was frustrated for not being allowed to stand up for myself. I think Mama Mai needs her own therapy before she will ever FULLY understand what Jeannie is saying. She's trying, but the differences in time ( what was culturally accepted then vs. now) and environment are not things that will change immediately. She's fully in touch with HER feelings, and she is in touch with Monaco's feelings because Monaco is a child right now and off limits but when she is older she won't be and some of those knee-jerk behaviors that she has practiced her whole life will return without a conscious effort to stop them. Good for you,Jeannie, trying to change the dynamics.

Thank you Jeannie for having the difficult conversations about your traumas with your mom. I can also appreciate that Mama Mai is also willing. There are many of us, (and im 53 yo) who have yet to get over the hurdle of beginning to have an open, honest conversation with our parents. There's a certain generations that, like Mama Mai's father, believe whatever they say as parents is the last word, and that what they've done is not to be spoken about. It has, and still is doing irrepairable damage to everyone involved. I commend you both.

Thank you to Mama Mai for being so vulnerable. Recently I had the same conversation with my mother. My grandfather was similar and even after all these years she also remembers the physical abuse disguised as punishment. It was also a lesson in forgiveness because she did not prohibit us from getting to know my grandfather. Time to release and break the generational trauma. Forgiveness is the power to heal ourselves and break free from those chains for a brighter future.

Some people joke or make hitting children as something necessary for discipline. Some saying being hit til there were bruises or until they cried made them a stronger and better person. Those things get passed down in families. Sometimes hitting goes too far and in some situations parents get to take out their own frustrations and demons on their kids. I think people feel guilty saying their parents were wrong about some things.

I had to do my hair every single night in those hard ass tight pink 80s rollers every night. And my moms a night owl. So she’d always forget to start till at least midnight and I’d get woken up it took over an hour because she loaded my tiny head. Btw this started in preschool. And my mom never worked a day in my life and not many in her own life. And I had to sleep with my head on my hand’s just like the doctor showed. She also bleached my naturally darker hair from brown to bleach blonde starting on kindergarten. And then we had to wake up at 5:30am to be to school by 9:30am. Because she had me remove the rollers and get everything out to prepare for the 2 hours of makeup and hair and wardrobe every damn morning. I looked like JonBenét Ramsey…..the creepy over made up beauty pageant children. I hated every single moment of it. I’m crazy shy and an introvert. I hate being the center of attention. And my mom was all about social climbing and “keeping up with the jones”, and being super thin, and always looking and behaving perfectly. And spending money. I also was adopted. My biological parents were teenagers in a different state. And my adoptive parents were unable to conceive. They were also rejected from all the adoption agencies in our home state. And I can tell you it was for very good reasons. And so, I was basically a purchased piece of property to them. And forever indebted to them, I owed my whole entire life to them. And they gave zero care to if their desires were in my best interests or what made me happy. It’s a lot I can’t get into. But that very first 2 minutes of this video triggered the memory bank. And my hell of a childhood. The hair thing was the best part actually.
