    I really enjoy your videos, it’s hard to find anything that targets writers. I see tons of videos on tech for artists but never hear anything for us so this is refreshing. I recently got an ipad m1 and the backlit magic keyboard has changed my life.

      I went in to an Apple Store to get something fixed and they casually mentioned they had the keyboard in. I don't need it, I told them. Then I typed a sentence on it. I need it, I told them.

    For a great but more affordable iPad keyboard, I’d suggest the Logitech Combo touch iPad keyboards.
    They have them in various sizes for specific iPads (Pros, Air, iPad) and they have a trackpad.
    I couldn’t help but laugh when I saw Apple’s “innovation” because it basically steals Logitech’s design.
    It’s a hardy cover as well and it also covers the sides of the iPad, which some people have commented is an oversight in the Apple own keyboard that leave these areas exposed to potential scratches/damage.
    Regardless, you’ll be saving a small fortune with the Logitech Combo over Apple’s own.

    • @WilliamGallagher
      @WilliamGallagher  Год назад +2

      Thanks. My sole hesitation is that a long time ago, I reviewed a Logitech Combo and it was so big that it felt like it turned my (then) 12.9-inch iPad Pro into a boat with sails. I don't remember a trackpad and it was surely long enough ago that it was before iPads supported trackpads, so have they changed? You are so right about the sides of the iPad; it's the exposed corners that worry me most because a prang there could shatter the screen.

    • @NeverLastRec

      @@WilliamGallagher the description made me chuckle. It is a thick cover but I think that is also the problem with it covering the sides of the iPad. It’s certainly made my iPad Air a bit of a chunky monkey, but that added heft make me feel that my iPad is safe and secure… whether it is or not I don’t want to test.
      The Apple Magic Keyboard does look fancy and the extra port is a great idea that is lacking with the Logitech Combo.
      Overall I thought the Logitech was a great affordable option if you want to avoid the Apple prices.
      Saying that, I’m looking at getting the Apple Pencil over Logitech’s own version for note taking, doodling, etc.

    I use an iPad mini alongside my MacBook Air M1- I scribble down notes or scour through PDFs on it and draw on it whenever I feel artsy. Like you I use my Mac for hardcore writing but it’s a very nice companion (of course for content consumption as well)

    Great perspective, as always. As you allude to, Apple seems to be falling into the trap of stretching itself across too diluted a product lineup, especially so far as the iPad is concerned. The device is ever locked in an identity crisis, as even lowest spec device in the lineup is fantastic for what most users ultimately use a tablet for-consumption. Even as writers, the entry level sports enough oomph to drive even our most challenging projects (platform limitations like screen space and single single screen usage aside), and even the higher tiered devices with more robust features are often hamstrung by the operating system before they succumb to true hardware limitations. I love my 12.9” 2018 iPad Pro, and remain skeptical that I will outgrow it any time soon (at least purely from a hardware relevance standpoint). The iPad of old keyed in to a more “spec-less” existence for a reason-specs mostly didn’t matter for the tasks we tend to use tablets for. And though the marketing has changed in recent years to pump up the hardware inside, the OS seems stuck in the spec-less mode, not really taking full advantage of the hardware inside because it remains a tablet both in spirit and execution. An M2 inside does not a Mac make, even though logically it might stand to reason beyond OS imposed limitations. All that said, while I prefer my laptop (or desktop, an old Mac Pro from 2009 still chugging along!) for writing, my iPad is still one of my favorite devices and serves as a wonderful slate for creativity and consumption in a form factor that never seems to lose its allure. Seems I’ve prattled on without any point again, apologies!

      @WilliamGallagher  Год назад

      'Ere, I was with you until that last bit about prattling. Look at me: which of us as prattled more? I thank you. I take your point about specifications but I've always been less interested in them than many others. I just remember trying to buy a PC and asking a PC World staffer what the difference was between of them. "50Ghz!" she said, like it was obvious. And I suppose it was, as that number was written on the box. But it didn't help me and I smiled politely as I walked away.

    I've started thinking about ways to get more use out of my iPad, maybe to the point of upgrading.
    Do you have any thoughts about note-taking software on the iPad? Notability? Goodnotes? Just stick with Notes?

    • @WilliamGallagher
      @WilliamGallagher  Год назад +1

      I’m going to say that no, I don’t have any thoughts. But really what I mean is that I don’t think I have any useful ones. I like Apple Notes now and it’s the one I turn to unthinkingly, and I loathe Evernote because it just drove me to that as if the company had set out to personally irritate me. But is that useful? I do hear good things about Notability and Goodnotes; I’ve tried them both over the years but neither happened to stick with me. But I think I was trying at least one of them for its handwriting recognition - I think - and that was never going to end well, given how I scrawl.

    Having an M1 Pro 12,9" and really don't know what to do with it. For reading and surfing: Too big. For Working: Too limited & too small. For Writing... well: I prefer my iMac, because I hate switching my 20-Years-learned Mac-Workflow to the iPad.
    Worst thing about the 12"-iPad: I traded in my 2017 10,5" Pro in, which was much better for everything in every way and still wasn't slow this summer.

    • @WilliamGallagher
      @WilliamGallagher  Год назад +1

      I think the more you use it, the more you'll get into it. So I suggest picking one writing project and doing that exclusively on the iPad. It's a ridiculous idea since anything you write on any of your devices will automatically be on all of them, but if you regard the iPad as where you are doing this particular writing, you'll come to associate the two. I did this during lockdown with a book that I only wrote on using my 11-inch iPad Pro, day after day. No question, my MacBook Pro is now better but still that book belonged on that iPad and the more time I spent on it, the more I liked the iPad. Mind you, I did already relish it. And I quite envy you the 12.9-inch version: I used to have the original 2015 one of those and it felt like I wasn't tapping on glass, I was reaching both my hands into whatever work I was doing.

      It's tricky, but more so with Macs: I got burned by trying to work with the smallest possible SSD in a Mac mini and it was horrible, even with iCloud. So I'm a bit gunshy, but you're right about the cost and using iCloud for iPads, absolutely. I should've thought of that.

    for me means MacBook M1 Air. Main reason…iPad os …. That said, I might try a refurbished 12.9 M1 iPad if the price point tumbles…
    it’s all a wonder. One can get a nicely configured M1 MacBook Air for less than a task ready configured 10th Gen iPad with Magic Keyboard Folio and Apple Pencil 1st Gen (Why?) , not to mention the cheek of playing 9 bucks for USB-C to Apple Pencil Adapter… Really?

But my iPad is to my side and in a moment that's the device I will carry with me for the rest of the day because of the sheer convenience and how well I can write on it. The screen on the 9th generation iPad is a touch better: it has the thing that changes the tone of the screen light so that it's more restful at night. Other than that, it's going to be a bit faster than the 8th generation but I don't think dramatically so. As long as the 8 is in good condition and the price is right, I'd be tempted by the 128GB. Would a m2 8 gig ram 512 gig storage Mac mini (when they come out), or m2 MacBook air last long if all you do is write, surf the internet? I’d go for a 16 gig of ram but in stores around here, they just sell 8 gigs of ram. On the shopping channel they say they last 9-10 years, and in other youtube videos, they say 16 gig ram lasts 5-7 years. Someone is wrong. I hope the iPad 8 lasts a few more good years. Enjoy the home button for as long as I can.

    • @WilliamGallagher
      @WilliamGallagher  Год назад

      Have you tried an iPad without the Home button? It was weird for a half a day, and now I grumble when I go back to one. That's if I even remember: I'm now quite likely to stare at the iPad, wondering why it isn't doing anything.
      As for the years you quote, I can't guess where people get either figure from. You know the shopping channel will be exaggerating upwards, but I don't know from what base. Apple supports old versions of the iPadOS software going back many years, and it continues to repair old iPads for at least several years after it stops selling a given model. Maybe they're basing the calculation on that.
      The short version is the more RAM and storage you have, the longer the device will have a *useful* life. It will keep on working, you'll just reach a point where it doesn't do what you need anymore.
      With a Mac, RAM has now changed in such a way that there is an argument that the old figures don't apply any more. Previously you could know that 8GB wasn't enough, but today Apple Silicon is so good with memory that it might well be. From what you say, I'd expect 512GB of storage to be good, too, but I will deny everything if you turn out to be a filmmaker shooting hundreds of hours of footage every day.
      I can tell you that my first Mac mini had too little RAM in it and it was tortuous. But I think it was as little as 128GB, so I expect that 512 would be fine.

    @backseatdriver9576 Год назад

    No offense, but wtf? This video is supposed to be about writing on ipads. Nearly all the content was comparing the ipads and nothing on what it does for writers. Well, you did point out that each time Apple puts out a new generation, they make the older generation accessories NOT COMPATIABLE. Thanks Apple. Milking every dime from us and making it harder for schools to use/get newer ones and use the old chargers/keyboards.
    Here's what you SHOULD have said:
    Do NOT get the regular version of ipad if you are going to write, unless you have no other choice. The better resolution and speed on the pro versions really help eye fatigue and let you focus on writing instead of functionality. Also, the keyboards are nice but not for writing. They are nice to use in a pinch if you are traveling but a full size keyboard with number keys is soooooo much faster and more comfortable. Don't believe me? Do a timed typing test to see the difference in productivity.
    The writing apps in the Apple ecosystem are also not very good, particularly on the ios platform and specifically the Ulysseses app. It's Apple only making it completely a waste of time for productivity when you are ready to export and publish or if you also use windows machines at home or work. The Scrivener app is much nicer as it gives you a ton more functionality, sometimes too much, and also let's you export to other apps like Word.
    In fact, the ONLY reason you should be writing on the ipad is if it's the only device you have, write a lot while traveling, or you use the device for both drawing and writing. You still run into the same issues of exporting those finished pieces to others that are not in the Apple ecosystem, which is A LOT of people and publishers.
    What's fantastic about the Ipad, and specifically the Ipad Pro, is that it's a nice all around device. Movies are fantastic to watch on it, the sound is very good (both by external speakers and headphones), you can do multiple things such as draw, write, play music, watch movies, etc etc, the battery lasts a very long time and most importantly, it does not overheat even when on your lap. It's remarkable how well it removes heat without the need for a fan. Also, the screen is fantastic on it both with and without the screen protector/drawing cover on it.
    In my opinion, the Ipad Pro is worth the upgrade from the price of the base model in EVERY way. The external keyboard is pricey but also acts as a protector, which is nice.
