Love this song so much. The scenes are from American Graffiti, a movie y'all should watch. The scene you stopped on was Wolfman Jack, he was a DJ and hosted The Midnight Special.
I bet ive watched that movie 20 or more times. I first seen it in 73 in a movie theater when it first came out and i had already been crusing local towns in my 64 GTO. good times. Now everything is illegal
@@kevinwallis2194 I've watched it quite a few times myself. Great music.
Yeah, great movie! Chock full of late 50s/early 60s music hits. George Lucas wrote this based on his cruising experiences as a teen in SoCal. And it featured a young Harrison Ford in his first big movie role!
We actually cruised main street and played these songs on the radio. Wolf man Jack was a DJ that played all the hits on his show
Hi didn't get to see the movie in UK but got a lp record of sound trackI nearly wore out on repeat play
This song was recorded in a room, live, with ONE MICROPHONE.
That's when talent was EVERYTHING
In a church basement in New Haven, CT. Fred Paris recently passed away. This song was used in many movies.
In a church basement!
🔥
The video is showing scenes from the movie American Graffiti. Lots of stars and great music. A movie worth watching!
American Graffiti! So many Hollywood icons BEFORE they all became household names! Harrison Ford, Ron Howard, Cindy Williams, Suzanne Somers, Richard Dreyfuss, Mackenzie Phillips... it was an all-star cast!
I love that movie. One of my fondest memories is my Dad introducing it to me and just cruising.
@@Shrykespeare Time I watch it again, I love seeing actors before we really knew them!
That movie made a star out of Harrison Ford. He wasn't on very long but he made an impression.
This is my grandfather. I'm super happy you all appreciate his music! He was so happy that people loved his music and he loved his fans! Thank you for sharing this with the world!
Highly recommend “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes” by The Platters, released in 1958. Powerhouse vocals by lead vocalist Tony Williams, and music that makes you feel, y’all would love it.
Dinah Washington did an amazing cover of that song. Give it a try!
Agree! Amazing song. One of my favorite fifties tunes!
ANY song by the Platters! ❤️😊
YES- the Platters!!!
I have said this for 6 months in these comments maybe they will see it if more people post it.
You would really like "Only You" by the Platters; amazing harmonies and, wow, the range on the lead singer!
That is a good one. So is The Magic Touch and Twilight Time.
ANY song by the Platters!
Yes, a real beauty.
I was just about to suggest The Platters. “Only You” is beautiful, but I absolutely love their version of “Smoke gets in your eyes.”
Of course there’s also “The Great Pretender,” “Twilight Time,” and “My Prayer.”
Is there any song that they haven't liked yet? lol
Those pics are from a movie AMERICAN GRAFFITI, the songs and cars are all in there ,A MUST WATCH
If y'all want a killer uptempo doo-wop tune, here's a great one: "I Wonder Why" by Dion & the Belmonts.
Another: Danny & the Juniors, At the Hop!
Great tune. My favorite up temp on is probably Rama Lama Ding Dong by The Edsels
The modern live version available on RUclips is my favorite. If you search for it, I think the thumbnail is red, white, and blue lights, and is titled 'Dion - I Wonder Why.'
Please react to the 1958 studio original first!
All of the Dion and the Belmonts songs were So classic! One of my Favorite groups. A group that was touring with Richie Valens and the others when the fatal plane crash happened. In an interview Dion said in his teens he would go to the Apollo Theater and listen to the great sax players of the time. He and his group would then recreate that sound with their voices which you can tell when listening to "Run around Sue", "I wonder why", and "Lovers who Wander". Enjoy!
Used to sing this in the car with my daughter when she was about 5/6. She’s now in her 30’s. Boys to Men did a great cover.
Another wonderful song from the '50s is "I Only Have Eyes For You" by The Flamingos. It's one of the most beautiful love songs ever. I know you'll love it! 🌞
Yea it is, pretty much all the Flamingos song are wonderful.
Yes! Absolutely one of my most favorite of the era - I recommended it a long time ago.
I would say this is one of the BEST songs of the 50's.
Absolutely one of the best doo-wop songs ever
It's a beautiful song. You haven't heard Stand by Me by Ben E. King (a few years later). It's an important song and later covered by John Lennon. :)
I much preferred "Spanish Harlem" by Ben E. King (1961).
Ronnie Spector died. She was in the Ronnetts and did that song “ take me home tonight” with Eddie Money. You did a great reaction video to that. RIP
Be my, be my little baby. That songs also happens to be what Bob seger is referring to in his song night moves when "he's humming a song from 1962"!
I had a sister that was 12 years older than I, so I heard this music when I was very young. I remember her coming home from school and watching American Bandstand on television.
The Five Satins are an American doo-wop group, best known for their 1956 million-selling song, "In The Still Of The Night." They had some other songs such as "Pretty Baby (That's Why I Sing)", "A Night To Remember", "To The Aisle" etc.
"To the Aisle" is such a great underappreciated song.
Art Garfunkel did a wonderful cover of this song as well.
Doo wop is always a great one to listen to.
Other great doo wop hits:
"Duke of Earl" - Gene Chandler
"Pretty Little Angel Eyes" - Curtis Lee & The Halos
"Those Oldies But Goodies" - Little Caesar & The Romans
"Book Of Love" - The Monotones
"Why Do Fools Fall In Love" - Frankie Lymon & The Teenagers
Here in New York, the oldies station wcbs-fm 101.1 used to do a countdown of the all-time greatest Tunes every year back in the day. And this was always the number one song. Truly classic
This was recorded in a church basement St. Bernadette in New Haven Ct. 💜
Yes! It was also recorded so low (resulting in a lot more tape noise), it almost didn't get released.
You guys are on fire this year. So many great songs!
I'm only 36 years old but I had older generation parents and when I was growing up one of my favorite songs I always listened to as a teenager was Dion and the bellmonts "teenager in love". Absolutely love the voice
I love Dion too, he's still singing.
This, and 40's big band is the music my Dad loved.
Ronnie Milsap incorporated this into his hit "Lost In The Fifties Tonight". Great song and video. Both songs have the classic tenor sax solo.
Now you have me on a rabbit hole
The video is showing stills from the movie "American Graffiti" which is filled with great music like this and great cars.
Soooo nice….the video scenes are from the movie , American Graffiti.
Such good music throughout that movie..a must see.
Big stars, Ron Howard, Harrison Ford, Suzanne Somers, and more…
The radio disk jockey is the legendary Wolfman Jack !
It was the pre-quell to the tv show, Happy Days.
Fabulous movie. Must watch it again..
Richard Dreyfus also in the cast! One of the first movies directed by George Lucas (original Star Wars Trilogy 1977-1983)
This is my mom and dads song… been married 61 years! ❤️
Amber, as a movie and music fan, you should watch the film "American Graffiti" (1973), starting Ron Howard as a young man. It's an excellent coming-of-age movie set in 1962. Excellent doo wop and early rock soundtrack, too.
And a very young, pre Star Wars, Harrison Ford. American Graffiti also inspired the TV show Happy Days
@@txheadshots Yes. Happy Days was very popular, but it couldn't hold a candle to American Graffiti, which had some real depth.
@@tombeyerlein3813 it was made for different audiences... the movie for more mature audiences and Happy Days for standard, family friendly sitcom that was so prevalent in the 70s and 80s
@@txheadshots Yeah, I get that. My point is that for today's audiences (like Jay and Amber) I wouldn't really recommend spending the time on Happy Days, where American Graffiti is time well spent.
American Graffiti is my all time favorite movie
Two more great songs from the early 60s are "You Belong to Me" and "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" by the doo-wop group "The Tokens." Hope you can squeeze them in!
Most of the images are from “American Graffiti” also known as “the movie that paid for Star Wars.”
This song is so very beautiful.
And a far better film than "Star Wars."
I had teenage sisters when this song came out, because of them as a very young person, I got to appreciate the music of the day through my teenage sisters.… This song brings back fond memories of them and the music
Same here. My sister (just the two of us in the family) was 15 years older than me, so it was a real treat when she let me sit with her when she played 45's. She graduated from high school in '53 and when I got old enough to have my own record player (45's also) she gave me her whole record collection and I memorized every word of every song.
@@marleneclausen30 What a wonderful story! Those memories and those times were so special for you, for me and for all those who experience these things.
Classic doo-wop from 1956. My parents were in high school! Boyz II Men did a great cover of this song in 1992. It was also in the movie Dirty Dancing. It was originally released as "In the Still of the Nite" so it wouldn't be confused with the Cole Porter song of the same name. As far as I know, it is the only non-Christmas song to have ever charted on the Billboard Hot 100 THREE different times! For more by this group, check out "To the Aisle" and "I'll Be Seeing You". You should also do "I Only Have Eyes For You" by The Flamingos.
This is a true doowop song, said to be the greatest doowop song ever. Fantastic voice, I loved the beautiful song back then , still do. A perfect slow dance song. There's many great doowop songs
Earth Angel by Penguins, There's a Moon out Tonight by Capris, Since I don't Have You by Skylines, Teardrops & Long Lonely Nights by Lee Andrews and more. Kudos to all making this song great and beautiful.
IF you like this, you will definitely love "The Platters". They are the absolute smoothest sound of the 50's. "Only You", "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes", "The Great Pretender" all so good.
These are not photos but stills from an amazing movie called American Graffiti. Fantastic soundtrack! Made in 73 but takes place in the 50's.
Great choice! It's definitely time for you to react to The Platters, also from the late '50s. Tony Williams, their lead singer, had a fantastic voice. I suggest "Only You," "My Prayer," "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" or "The Great Pretender."
You guys would LOVE the movie "American Grafitti"! Set in 1962, directed by George Lucas before Star Wars. The movie soundtrack was triple platinum & went to #15 on the charts. It also spawned the Happy Days TV show.
I love 50s music! I was probably first introduced to this song when I first watched Dirty Dancing! A few of my faves from the 50s: Teenager In Love by Dion and the Belmonts, Peggy Sue by Buddy Holly, Venus by Frankie Avalon and Dream Lover by Bobby Darin
I love 50's music and I'm only 44! My mom and dad raised me to love and appreciate music from our past. This song is one of my favorites along with "At Last", by Etta James!🎶
My daughter is 43 and she used Etta James "At Last" as her first dance song at her wedding. I love to hear that other parents raised their kids like her Dad and I did. To love and appreciate music from every generation is a gift. Keep passing it down!
@Sara Chesterfield I sure will. I've been on a musical journey like Jay and Amber listening to and discovering oldies and 60's music. My brother has a huge vinyl record collection that we listen to. He has so many oldies 45's in his collection. I love them all!☺️
Back in the 50's they didn't have the technology they have today. This is pure talent, absolutely legendary. Great Channel by the way, keep up the good work!
Love these reactions to older music. One I love is the Mills Brothers doing 'Til Then. The group was around starting in the 1930's, and had many number one hits. Their harmony is fantastic. Their 1958 version of "Til Then, done as guests on, I think, the old Pat Boone show in 1958 is my favorite. They're older then, but still sing up a storm.
From the 50s you've got to check out The Platters, everything they sang was beautiful: Only You, The Great Pretender, Smoke Gets in your eyes etc. A great pick for Female Friday would be Timi Yuro's "Hurt". She had one of the greatest voices, so powerful.
Also Miss Toni Fisher singing "The Big Hurt."
Guys, this Masterpiece was voted the best song of the 20th Century by the CBS 101.1FM audience during a broadcast celebrating the greatest hits of all time. When this song played, the "two step" you danced with your sweetheart was a moment to never forget for the rest of your life. If you weren't on the dance floor, whatever you were doing when this song started to play, you stopped everything and focused completely on the song until it was over. It was like our musical National Anthem.
Btw, finishing a close 2nd in the voting was The Penquins singing 'Earth Angel'. Give it a listen.
"I only have eyes for you" by The Flamingos is my favourite song within this genre.
This 1956 ( "IN THE STILL OF THE NIGHT") classic from the Five Satins .the group was formed 1954 out of New Haven,CT. The group is in the Vocal Group Hall of Fame. Fred Parris( a member of the group)wrote this song.
LAST KISS by The Cavaliers , Anything by The Platters, Runaround Sue by Dion, are all FIRE!!!
This song was also in the movie Dirty Dancing. Great movie and great soundtrack 🎼 🎵
Such a great 50s tune. The times were so much simpler.
Awesome Freddie Parris and the Satins
They are showing scenes from the smash hit movie American Graffiti. The soundtrack is incredible, the best of the 50’s.
Growing up with this song and never gets old! Classic.. its nice to see how this generations appreciate our music!
Really nothing better. So smooth. Again, see the music we grew up with. Lovely. Singing along with the background guys here. Doo wop.
This is a good slow dance tune, but for that frenetic Doo-Wap energy, the best examples for first time reaction: 1) *At The Hop* by *Danny & The Juniors* 2) *Little Darlin'* by *The Diamonds* 3) *Book Of Love* by *The Monotones* 4) *Run Around Sue* by *Dion*
The Satins recorded this in the basement of a school. I never found out why - maybe they couldn't afford studio time. No matter, it's one of the best loved doo wop songs ever.
I think it was only supposed to be a demo but the record company released it as is.
Jaye - it was recorded in the basement of Saint Bernadette's Church (some articles say it was the school bur are incorrect.) They also recorded "The Jones Girl" which was the A side of the record but DJs played the B side and the rest is history. They had a 50th anniversary of the song at the church in 2016 and there is a plaque on the wall in the basement. Here is one explanation of how they ended up recording it there: "The song was recorded in the basement of St. Bernadette Church in the group's hometown of New Haven, Connecticut. They first tried recording the song in another New Haven building (on Whalley Avenue), but street noise degraded the recording. The church basement had great acoustics and was insulated from ambient noise, making it a perfect place to record.
The group was managed by Marty Kugell, who distributed their material on his own label, Standord Records (small operations like this were common at the time). His friend Vinny Mazzetta was an altar boy at the church, and Mazzetta convinced the pastor to let the group use the basement on a Sunday afternoon following a church service. They used the church piano along with drums, a guitar, a cello tuned low for the bass sound, and a saxophone, which Mazzetta played."
@Shutter29 Thanks for the info. Much appreciated.
This was the #1 song on oldies stations in the 70s and beyond!!! Those are 'fins" in the back of the cars of the 50s.
Groups like the Satins, the Platters, the Chantells, Flamingos, and Temptations, all of whom were guests on American Bandstand back in the '50s, brought young people, both black and white together. There was still more to do in regard to racial equality but the music became that of that whole generation. We loved it!
Amber you NEED to watch Dirty Dancing - or get ahold of the soundtrack. This song is on it - plus more like it. All of the music is fantastic. On the completely opposite end of the spectrum - I would like to put in a request for Josh Turner. Young country arist - but has the BEST country voice. I promise you'll love him. Why Don't We Just Dance, Long Black Train, and Would You Go with Me are three of his BEST songs.
Dirty Dancing is one of my all time favorite movies!! The Soundtrack( Part 1 & 2) is awesome!!! So many great songs.
One of the best Doo-Wop songs of all time. Blue Moon by the Marcels
The drive-ins used to have a pole with a speaker on it that you would hang inside your car from the window, because not everyone had radios in their cars back then…. And there wasn’t the ability of the drive in to broadcast it onto your radio
That wasn't around until about the 1990s(?)
A fitting tribute FRED PARIS lead singer with the Five Satins passed away 13/01/2022 the day before you have highlighted his fine voice RIP and Thank you for bringing him to a new generation of music lovers
Please react to -1.The Clovers: Love Potion Number 9 -2.The Coasters: Poison Ivy -3.? and the Mysterians: 96 Tears -4.Jody Reynolds: Endless Sleep -5.Ray Peterson: Tell Laura I Love Her -Thanks!!!
I was wondering what they’d think of 96 Tears! First ‘45 I bought!
This is way back. So many great R&B Soul musicians in the 50's and 60's
I love the music from this time. If u like this watch a movie called” American Grafitti”. I used to listen to this music in the 70’’s as a kid.❤️
A CLASSIC from 1956...one of THE best "Doo Wop" songs of all time!
For Female Friday: At Last, by Etta James.
Excellent choice! Then blow both their minds with "Tell Mama" or "Something Got A Hold On Me" 😉
One of the best slow doo-wop songs ever. Another one you should check out is "Tears on my Pillow" by Little Anthony & The Imperials
Hey it's the 79 year old grandma, this is my favorite song of all time, I remember at about the age of 14 or so sitting with my best friend on her porch singing this, such a great song. By the way on this video the pictures you are seeing are from the movie American Graffiti, and absolutely awesome movie, that truly depicts the times and life of us back in those days. With some very famous stars in there very early roles in movies, I know you would love it,.
Oh my gosh this song is awesome
The Andrews Sisters were a generation ahead of rock and rollers and when Doo Wop hit the 50's, it became a very popular style in slow music. Dances were hugely popular and these were the songs we would "slow dance" to. Great Doo Wop groups from that era: The Moonglows with "Sincerely", The Cadillacs with "Gloria" or "Zoom" (this one has a fast beat), and The Diamonds with so many major hits like "Little Darlin" and "The Stroll". The Stroll actually became one of those popular dances in the 50's. It was a fun, double line dance that you should watch. The song is great and the dance was some of the best times!
Picture a high school gym, dark, with a mirror ball. Check out Silhouettes by the Rays or Those Oldies But Goodies by Little Ceaser.
I love that you’re going back to the 50’s I lost my dad in November and these all bring back memories of him. He and I would play pool for hours listening to these songs.
Boyz II Men did a great a cappella version of this in 1993. Did it a full stop lower so it's got quite a different vibe. Worth checking out as it really shows off how well they harmonise. You won't believe that the sound in that version is only their voices. I actually think it's better than the original.
Agreed - really dig their cover.
I made a similar comment then saw yours. That version was an add on to an album that I had but when I went to find that song years later it was nowhere to be found. They actually removed that track from the album. I eventually found an older release but it was almost lost. Now we have RUclips so it's been rediscovered. Happy to see I am not the only one who thought there cover was special.
I used to sit on the couch with my brothers and listen to my dad in the early 80s play his older records! I got my love of music from him one of The best things , you could ever get !
ONE OF THE GREATEST SONGS EVER!!! This IS the one you slow danced to with your sweetheart... What memories... Keep on keepin' on. BCNU...
Speaking of Five, you should react to The Five Stairsteps singing "OO-oh Child"!
Oldie but Goodie
Possibly the greatest of the Doo-Wop songs. Great choice. You have probably heard that another great singer of the early 1960s Ronnie Spector passed away yesterday. You might find the time to react to The Ronettes and "Be My Baby." Iconic voice and song. Cheers.
I was 15 when I first heard this song on the radio..I'm 77 now..we all loved this song back then
This is a beautiful song back when people could sing and harmonize together. A really good song from the 60’s is by Wayne Fontana and the mindbendars the game of love I think you would love it
That layered background that you mentioned way back there was called a "wall of sound". It was invented early on to add flesh to the bones of a solo singer or singers. Gave songs a fullness. I came of age during this era. Used to listen to radio on a primitive crystal set "radio" and an earphone. Was a great way to go to sleep.
The Earth Angel song broke through with the never before form of singing style and music. Was electrifying back then while escaping from the waltzes and fox trots and crooning left over from the 1940s and early 1950s. This new stuff was OUR music, our generation, energetic, dynamically romantic, told stories in song, matched our teenage energy and dreams for our future.
I’d like to recommend Ronnie Milsap’s “Lost In The Fifties(In The Still Of The Night)”. It’s considered country but is so mellow and just a beautiful song. It’s from the 80’s I believe. His voice is so smooth. I’m sure both of you will love it.
Lost In The Fifties by Mislap is beautiful ❤️
That was released in 1985 and became an instant classic. Of course Ronnie Milsap had a ton of hits so it's not difficult to imagine him writing a song that struck a chord with so many generations at once
One of the great songs from the 50s. All the scenes shown in this video were from the movie 'American Graffiti' (which you should react to on your upcoming movie reactions video). Other songs from that movie soundtrack & that era that you should check out :

Omg. The Flamingos another great 50's doo wop.this song , (I only have eyes for you,) widely considered one of thee best love songs written and sung. Amber you will be slow dancing with Rob to this one.
You need to react to the movie”American Graffiti”. Nothing but great songs.
First song I ever sang lead to with a group in 1958,when I was 15,probably the greatest doo-wop song ever written by Freddie Paris and the 5 satins!
Mel's Drive In with the music playing and dancing in the parking lot, I grew up in the 50s and 60s and the music was fantastic
I have good memories of my papa dancing with me to this song when I was very little. He would pick me up. ❤
My mom said that my grandparents loved dancing to this song. :)
It's a favorite of mine, too.
Doo Wop has various tempos, just like other styles.
The scenes are from the great movie called "American Graffiti", and I highly recommend it. When you paused it at 2:12, that's the late, great DJ, Wolfman Jack. His very unique voice is easily recognized by many.
This is _romantic_ music that says so much. It hurts my feeling that so many people these days have no idea about romance in general, let alone in music. They think a guy singing about rough sex is romantic. [sigh]
Thank you so much for keeping the music alive! This is my parent's music and i heard it almost every day growing up!
So glad to hear that again. Something about the harmony made me think of the Beatles. Good Harmony. I could almost hear the Beatles doing a cover of this tune. True classic.
AMBER, as someone else stated in the comments these photos that they showed during this video or scenes from the movie American Graffiti!! The movie starred a very young Ron Howard of Happy Days Fame and also a very young Harrison Ford!! It's a very good film which I believe Amber would enjoy very much!!!
Love this song! It's what we used to call "make-out music" & it would be heard at every Friday night frat party.😊
Billy Joel did a fantastic tribute to doo-wop with his Innocent Man album. One of my favorite albums of all time. Whole album is great but some standout to cover are: Innocent Man, Longest Time, This Night, and Keeping the Faith. I think you already did Uptown Girl.
One of the all time great doo wop, lights down low, basement party songs. Sadly the lead singer, Fred Parris, passed away at 85 yesterday.
Loved this song as a kid which was odd b/c I was growing up in the early 70s, Was even able to see The Five Satins sing this song at a 50's revival show which was headlined by none other than Little Richard, and others like Chubby Checkers, Dion etc. Feel like I'm the only one who's heard of it these days so surprised to see it pop up on youtube. It's funny all the vitriol about rocknroll at the time when in fact songs like this were incredibly sweet tempered.
Love this. Try "Sixteen Candles" by The Crests.
When I was young, they would have a top 300 golden oldies night countdown starting with number 300 and all the way to #1. This song came in at #1 every year. We had stamina back then staying up listening to every song.
This song was a hit even before I was allowed to listen to roch n roll on the radio. But hearing it later it is dowop at its best.
I love this song. I actually love the Sha Na Na cover even more - Johnny Contardo, voice of an angel.
ShaNaNa are so underrated. They rocked Woodstock!
Wow! That Edsel brought back some heady memories!
Love this kind of music remember my mum and dad playing music like this and still love this kind of music ❤️
Growing up in high school in the 70's we would have sock hops !
White shirts , black pants , white socks black shinny loafers and slicked back hair for the guys !
