The amazing Jimmy Beaumont. I've loved him for 60 years. I'm a Pittsburgher and saw the SkyLiners many times. Sadly he passed away a few years ago. ❤️❤️❤️
The year was 1959 - it was the height of doo-wop group pop music. Living in or around Pittsburgh PA we heard the beautiful voice of Jimmy Beaumont of The Skyliners singing "Since I Don't Have You". And there were great background harmonies and the soaring soprano climax featuring Janet Vogel. This song is seared into our memories and our hearts.
You're right. '59 was a crazy good year. I remember "Poison Ivy" by the Coasters came out that year, too. Acapella stuff was great. "Since I Don't Have You" reminds me of "Lovers Island" by the Blue Jays (1961) Or "The Closer You Are" by the Channels (1956). Street corner stuff. Sad that the music industry kept lookin' for the 'new song' and the 'new beat' barely gave air play after two songs sound alike. It's cool I can type them into RUclips and hear them once again. Did you ever hear "Paradise" by the Temptations (1962)?
Janet Vogel replaced my mom, Barbara Volbrecht when the band split from the original members. On the single (45 rpm record) they put "Since I Don't Have You" and "Pennies From Heaven" on the flip side. Both were hits and the band broke up after that. The original drummer and back up singer (mom) left the group.
When you're ready for more wonderful singing like that, check out these tunes: Nat King Cole "Mona Lisa", Johnny Mathis "Chances Are", Sam Cooke "You Send Me", The Flamingos "I Only Have Eyes For You", The Platters "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes", The Five Satins "In The Still Of The Night", The Chantels "Maybe", The Crests "Sixteen Candles", and Little Anthony "Tears On My Pillow" among many others.
Hi, Anthony....that made smile. I'm 75 (not sure about being 'young' - I feel pretty creaky these days!), but, yeah, this song is a piece of perfection of voice and song. Great to share this, wherever we are in the world. Keep well. Robert, uk.
The Skyliners hail from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvana. Lead Singer is Jimmy Beaumont and the female is janet Vogel Rapp who sadly took her own life in 1980 at the age of 36 Jimmy Beaumont passed away a few years ago RIP Jimmy and Janet.
I was so young in 1959 but listened to this music. My parents and aunts played their best songs for us. I remember them dancing in the kitchen....memories that make me cry.....❤😢
I always remember the "Sock Hops" in the gym after the football or basketball games. Can't forget the Saturday night dances at the Armory in my hometown and the Tuesday night dances in the Armory in an adjoining town. They were always so much fun and tons of happy memories.
Jimmy Beaumont (lead singer) was about 18 when he wrote this. The entire group actually wrote this song. They were all teenagers. Female singer Janet Vogel Rapp...who sang the whistle notes at the end,. Was 15 here. She later married an abuser and sadly killed herself in 1980..she was 36 years old
Jimmy Beaumont (R.I.P. 2017) and I are from the same Pittsburgh neighborhood. He was older, so I didn't get a chance to meet him until 2004, when the group came to Dallas for an oldies show that I emceed. We talked about the old neighborhood and some people and places we both knew. I cherish that memory. BTW, this song was a huge R&B hit, as well as a pop hit.
Janet Vogel was hitting those high "you's" at the end. Since I Don't Have You was recorded in 1958 and released in 1959. Janet was born in 1941 meaning she would have been around 16 when she sang on this song! Tragically Janet Vogel died of carbon monoxide poisoning in 1980. She was only 37 and left behind 3 children.
Never knew any of that. Thanks! Absolutely amazing a girl of her age was doing that on a song people will be blown away by when they hear it 300 years from now.
Spring of '59, I was 12 y/o, in 7th grade. 17 y/o Jimmy Beaumont, with 16 y/o janet Vogel , et al, recorded this classic. it was a sure-fire slow-dance for my generation.-----Doo Wop, forever & Ever ! ---------MJL, 76 y/o
There's just something magical about those 1950s and early 60s songs. They were complete class. No autotune, no over dubbing - everything done in one take. Its amazing.
This used to be so great for slow dancing. "Still of the Night" and "Blue Velvet" were great for that too. A lot of the time, it meant the start of a little romance. How do you like that high note he hits? NO AUTOTUNE
❤ I love you guys!!! You give props right where it is deserved. I wish Jimmy (lead singer), the whole group and Joe Rock (their lyricist & manager) were alive to see their art still being appreciated from the heart. RIP Skyliners (Jackie still alive) and Joe Rock.
Lead singer is Jimmy Beaumont, along with Johnny Maestro of the Crests is the stand out male vocalist of the 50's, was still singing in his 70's too. Janet Vogel was female singer, and she was absolutely outstanding too. The falsetto at the end is all her.
Jimmy Beaumont. I still get chills listening to this since I heard in the early 60s. One of the greatest doowop songs. Absolutely beautiful! This i Swear is also very good. There's a Moon out Tonight is another great doowop song by the Capris. Worth reacting to.
The Skyliners out of Pittsburgh, PA. Known for "SINCE I DIDN'T HAVE YOU"(1956) also "PENNIES FROM HEAVEN"(1956) in 1961 "CLOSE YOUR EYES "They were one many doo-wop groups. They've been in the VOCAL GROUP HALL OF FAME since 2002.
One of best recordings ever. I used to lay in bed as a kid at nite and listen to “the boys” on the corner, street corner doo op, and let me tell u, they were GOOD.
Hi..you both take these songs to the inner core of what the song is meant to make ur heart feel deeply for what it means and feels..i would really like to hear your feelings about a song called the way you look tonight..by johney mastro and The creats..it says it from the heart and sings it from the heart.. tell me and others what it feels like in your hearts please.
These were the most romantic dance songs - slow, slow with the little hesitation step. Oh wow! We were so in love and it felt so good to hold each other.
You two really make my day even better! Love exploring "the oldies" with y'all, its a musical history lesson, and you make it fun. Thank you Shawn and Mel!
Played in back ground in American🎥 Graphiti as Richard Dreyfuss talks with the Wolf Man, dj at radio station sending shout out for beautiful blond lady driving a 56 Tbird. (Susan Somers)😍
Shawn and Mel you two truly do bring "good energy and good music." You two brighten up my day with your reactions. I am so glad you are doing reactions to the "oldies" I grew up listening to this music from my parents and grandparents as it was from their generation. These songs are bringing back so much good memories. They stopped making good music after the 80s. The great groups were in the 50s and 60s.
Hey it's the 78 soon to be 79 year old grandma, before you started listening to this I was already singing it, lol, can;t tell you what I ate for breakfast this morning but can sing all the 1950,s hit songs at the drop of a hat lol. Oh and by the way it,s because of great music like this that all of you are alive and breathing on planet earth, because your parents or grandparents fell in love slow dancing to music like this back in the day.
The legendary Jimmy Beaumont on lead vocals here..He passed away not that long ago....This song is on the American Graffiti soundtrack...The falsetto voice you hear at the end of the song is Janet Vogel....
Oooohhhh yesss. This was a top "tummy rubbin" dance song. A real belt buckle polisher. In my misspent youth -- these were the songs I waited for ----- Just upset that I can't "LIKE" this more than once.
I can't tell you how much those of us who lived thru this music when it was "new", to see you folks appreciate music from so many years before you were even born. It is a real joy to listen to your comments and enjoyment of these doo wop songs. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!
It's AWESOME to see young people enjoying this music! I'm 41 & have loved this song since I first heard it when I was 11 years old! Lead singer Jimmy Beaumont & the lovely Janet Vogel Rapp, the high female falsetto voice that closes out the song, are looking down from Rock 'n'' Roll Heaven & smiling!
There's something really special about seeing people experience a classic for the first time. What's even more special is that even though I've been listening to this song all my life (I'm 65), I still get the same reaction as you just did. Next you need to listen to them sing "This I Swear is True".
Wow. Amazing. I never heard of this song or "I swear." I never heard of The Skyliners. These songs are easily, easily, among the greatest human romantic love songs I ever heard. Thank you so much for bringing it to my attention Shawn and Mel.
When this song came out, it sold out every where. My mother was on vacation in New York city. She asked me what I wanted her to bring me back. I said this record. She found it in the record store, and she got it for me.
There was a LOT of great music in the 1950. It was all a lot of fun and about a lot of love. The Skyliners were the top of the Pittsburgh sound. Check out the Del Vikings for more of the Pittsburgh sound.
So I’m 40 and grew up listening to doowop/ this… my parents music. I may have not liked it then but I have such an appreciation now for this music. This is perfection right here. Beautiful! Chills. I forget what commercial this was used in.
This was a great oldie. It s great that you both recognize how nice this music sounds. Because back then - it really did sound to everyone then as fantastic as it does to you guys too.
I was born in 1958 and grew up listening to this music with my Mom (Great memories). I still love this music. Listen to the pure voices, the diction and completion of the words they sing. You had to have pure natural talent given by God.
Sock Hops, roller skating, slow dancing, prom dresses with bouffant skirts, an innocent time with simple pleasures. The memories this song brings back.
Jimmy Beaumont one of the greatest singers ever. I listened to this on the radio back then. Loved it,still do. The lovely Janet Vogel added her great falsetto at the end. Was replaced after she passed with Donna Groom, another great singer
Jimmy Beaumont was just 18 fresh outa hi school + nailed 1 of the best 'submarine races' song of all times i just love watching how u 2 react 2 street corner doo wop the music I grew up with im now 70
The music I grew up to --------Spring of '59---------Jimmy Beaumont , Janet Vogel, et al, THE music of my life. too bad you folks had to miss it; you really should have been there ! -----------------MJL, 76 y/o
I was in the 7th grade and if it rained we were directed to the auditorium to dance. Man, how I prayed for rain - I knew I would get to hold my favorite young lady and sneak a kiss. We were so innocent and just being close enough to hold and feel a young lady's soft and warm cheek was just too much. Young guys learn to appreciate the smallest jester of affection from these early female encounters - it just stays with you as an adult. You learn
I lived in Pgh, PA, the hill district, my transistor radio went with me everywhere I went. Did not miss a song or a beat. Thank you. Oh, I was ten years old. I danced and sang before I could walk.
The great Jimmy Beaumont and the Skyliners. I was 5 when this came out and I can remember it from that time. These guys had some really great hits. RIP Jimmy........I believe he co - wrote this song while still in High School
This is an era when you needed to be talented. There was no machine to make you sound better. You had it or you did not.
This says it all. My wife of 57 years just died. We were together since we were 16. I was married at 17 years old. I miss her so much.
You will see her again for all eternity. God is good. Talk to her every day. Be good to yourself
You will see her in Heaven 🙏 she is waiting for you
The amazing Jimmy Beaumont. I've loved him for 60 years. I'm a Pittsburgher and saw the SkyLiners many times. Sadly he passed away a few years ago. ❤️❤️❤️
Jimmy Beaumont, wonderful singer, grew up listening to these songs, great times.
Some of us were around when this song was new.
Keep up the good work.
Jimmy Baumont!! What an amazing Voice!!!;))
The girl with the High note, don't get no credit, she's amazing! Wow!!
My all time favorite Doo Wop Smoocher, love this tune from 59, R.I.P Jimmy Beaumont, i have this on my jukebox. Best Wishes from England UK
listen to those Beautiful String Arrangements. shoutout to the Music Arranger who wrote those Strings on this Classic.
Back then you didn't sing unless you had talent. We got to listen to songs like this all day on the radio.
And just think of it, Shawn and Mel, our generation had music like this--AND ELVIS TOO!! :-) :-)
Being heartbroken never sounded so good!

In the 60s many many thought this group were black. What a shock when they came on tv singing this song. The falcetto amazing. It is beautiful.
The look on Mel's face when she hears Jimmy Beaumont's beautiful vocals tells me she can't believe he's white. lol
Nothing to hide behind back then. Either could sing or you couldn't. Brings back great memories. At age 71, I'm still feeling it. Thanks for sharing

The greatest slow song ever recorded. I'm a little biased as I'm from Pittsburgh. Grew up about 10 miles from McKeesport Pa where Jimmy was born.
The Skyliners SINCE I DON"T HAVE YOU usually comes in the top ten best DOO WOP songs of all times
Three Words In And I Got The Chills an awesome Recording Stunning and Beautiful. And I Even Have Tears 😢. 😊. ❤This Is Music

Lead singer Jimmy Beaumont's voice aged like fine wine, hear him do this at the PBS Doo Wop specials and his voice was still reaching inside you
You guys are great with the 50s and 60s.
There's just something magical about those 1950s and early 60s songs. They were complete class. No autotune, no over dubbing - everything done in one take. Its amazing.
And it was just one room, no booths, maybe sound screens, but it was recorded at once, all musicians, singers, and backup vocal present for one take!
This used to be so great for slow dancing. "Still of the Night" and "Blue Velvet" were great for that too. A lot of the time, it meant the start of a little romance. How do you like that high note he hits? NO AUTOTUNE
Janet Vogel.
My step grandfather played sax for them there from Mt Washington PA
I'm in my 70s now, but still have very clear memories of slow dancing at parties with my first crush. Wonderful songs bring back wonderful memories.

Music and cars! Gorgeous
My Dad was class of 1962. I had an unusual knowledge of 50s nostalgia as a kid. 😂 he thought I was reincarnated lol! Born in wrong Era

This song is absolutely one of the best 50s songs ever written and recorded. I’m not willing to argue on that either
Jimmy Beaumont. I still get chills listening to this since I heard in the early 60s. One of the greatest doowop songs. Absolutely beautiful! This i Swear is also very good. There's a Moon out Tonight is another great doowop song by the Capris. Worth reacting to.

I was six years old when this hit the airwaves. My parents wore these records out.
The Skyliners also had another hit "This I Swear" which they claimed as their part in the Baby Boom generation.
The Skyliners put that together nicely.
Lead singer is Jimmy Beaumont
You two really make my day even better! Love exploring "the oldies" with y'all, its a musical history lesson, and you make it fun. Thank you Shawn and Mel!
Can't describe how fullfilling it is to see the younger ones appreciate great music, amazing vocals and what they missed out on!
Best Doo Wop ever. This I Swear is another favorite of theirs.

Notice that everything is right on pitch - no auto tune just talent.
I was listening to pretty little girl of mine ,on the outside looking in, the stroll, Jackie wilson,
Jimmy lived right near me. A class act who loved the Pittsburgh/McKeesport area with all his heart. They were phenomenal.

There's something really special about seeing people experience a classic for the first time. What's even more special is that even though I've been listening to this song all my life (I'm 65), I still get the same reaction as you just did. Next you need to listen to them sing "This I Swear is True".
How I wish music and singers could go back to those styles. True music and pure voices. Yep, I miss those days(years). Gone but not forgotten!
Wow. Amazing. I never heard of this song or "I swear." I never heard of The Skyliners. These songs are easily, easily, among the greatest human romantic love songs I ever heard. Thank you so much for bringing it to my attention Shawn and Mel.

Me and Jimmy Beaumont...this goes out to someone on Lopez Island, WA. I hope she's listening.
The Flamingos "I Only Have Eyes For You". THE most romantic song of all time. First dance at our wedding in July, 2002.
