Doo wop is probably one of the greatest genres. Some of the most beautiful songs and greatest artists came from that era.
This is the most classic torch song ever written. Remember guys and gals it's better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all. Parting is such sweet sorrow.
Tony Williams is the VOICE!!!
Given me chills all over. Stunningly beautiful vocals all round, but especially the main singer. Its a perfect example of 'they don't make them like that anymore'
Music from that era was just soooooo goooood. Those singers was real singers; no auto tune or computers, just a the music, the mikes, and the singers. That's how it should be. No trickery. Just pure talent.
The crooners were still big when Elvis came into popularity and The Platters were great and still are never forgotten ❤
That's so amazing because they were so critical to that era! I'm a Gen Xer, and an old soul lol This was my parents' music, but whenever my Dad would put on those old LPs of crooners like Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Dean Martin, Tony Bennett, The Mills Brothers, The Platters, etc., on the record player, you could hear the crackling of the needle as the songs would play out... oh it was just one of the most magical times of my childhood. 🥰
❤️- love these guys
Music like this is priceless. You will never hear any music as great as this kind/style/type/genre ever again. Songs, lyrics, melodies like this are from an era gone by. Unlike today this was when musicians played and singers actually sang, no autotune and The Platters are fantastic.
Thank God for these videos! I would hate to be stuck with what is playing today!
You do not have to disrespectful the musicians of today, you know nothing about them, obviously
Look up Angelina Jordan.
Just a note on the term "priceless" in regards to music. If we (the world) had never heard the song before and it came out today, it would still seem groundbreaking. This song does just that. It IS priceless.
After more than 60 years, we remember the great stuff and forget the dross. Time is a great filter. I'm pretty sure that in 60 years time there will be folks saying there will never be music as good as the 2020s. Of course, we don't know which songs that will be, any more than folks in the 50s knew it would be The Platters cover of "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" we remember, and not Charlie Drake's cover of "Splish Splash".
The Platters are one of the greatest vocal groups in history. Their best hits include:
"My Prayer", " Only You", Harbor Lights", Magic Touch", Twilight Time" and arguably the greatest song of the rock era: "The Great Pretender".
Freddie Mercury and Queen do a cover of "The Great Pretender", with an entirely different meaning to the lyrics.
The Great Pretender absolutely the greatest song of the era!
The Great Pretender being best song of the era is no lie! One of the best songs ever.
Only you and twilight time are my all time favorites 🎶🎧
Great Pretender was my dad's favorite song. I miss him more than anything, but hearing the song feels so good.
I knew you guys would appreciate The Platters...❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🔥
They were performing in a club where my friends were having their wedding reception. The Platters came over and sang several songs for them. Nice folks
That's so sweet! Where was it?
Wow! What a precious memory to have of one's wedding reception!
It was in Yokosuka Japan. We were all poor enlisted folks
@@gypsygirl3255 enlisted folks- as in enlisted in the Army?

In my opinion, the best I’ll ever hear. ‘My Prayer’ is my favourite
Tony Williams.
Be prepared to be blown away. One of the GOAT groups…

My Prayer is a must 🙏, from the Platters.
Jay & Amber, you'll Love their "The Great Pretender", "My Prayer", "At Twilight Time", "(You've Got) The Magic Touch" and
"You'll Never Never Know"!!!!
The next one of the Platters,-(The Great Pretender), I think they will love it.
ᴛ᷈͟͟ʜ᷈͟͟ᴀ᷈͟͟ɴ᷈͟͟ᴋ᷈͟͟ꜱ᷈͟͟~͟~͟
At Twilight Time was featured in a sci-fi show, (I think The X-Files, at a spooky place where it played repeatedly. So unfortunately the song now gives me a spooky feeling anytime I hear it.
@@walterrutherford8321 Yes, you are right. It was in an X Files episode called "Kill Switch". It was on a kill switch CD that played the song when it was loaded into a player.
Thanks for reacting to this song. It’s one of the most beautiful songs ever recorded.
Great band. I agree with what others have typed. The Great Pretender is on another level.
Thanks for this gem. Have not heard it for over 30 years. I'm just 50. Love this real music.
I love the lyrics. It starts with love being blind because of the smoke from his heart on fire. At the end, when his true love left, he blames his tears on the smoke from the ashes of the dying love. The whole relationship in two minutes. Amazing voice.
ᴛ᷈͟͟ʜ᷈͟͟ᴀ᷈͟͟ɴ᷈͟͟ᴋ᷈͟͟ꜱ᷈͟͟~͟~͟
This song was written by the mega talented and enormously famous Cole Porter, in 1933. Though recorded by many famous artists, the Platters are mostly associated with it since introducing it to the Baby Boomer teenagers.
What a beautiful voice
Excellent choice. Beautiful song. This is what is called a standard. Not all songs have to be compared to something.
Youngstas……the song was originally from the 1930’s, written by Jerome Kern. The Platters released this cover in 1958, with Tony Williams on lead and that beautiful string arrangements which makes this a classic.
"Smoke Gets in Your Eyes", written by Jerome Kern and Otto Harbach for the 1933 musical "Roberta".
Tony Williams one of the greatest voices ever. His song “Where” is operatic, amazing!
The Platters would have never been the Platters without the amazing work of Buck Ram. He tuned them from also rans at Federal to superstars at Mercury. All the production and much of the writing on their non-cover hits were all his work.
Lead tenor Tony Williams. The members changed slightly over the years, but Tony Williams was the tenor on this and other most successful hits. "The Great Pretender" is probably the best known and remembered.
The lead singer’s name was Tony Williams.
What's just as good as the song and the arrangement of the instruments is the careful, clear pronunciation of the words - makes my ears relax because the singer is not mangling the English language but pronouncing/singing it beautifully and with class.
The Platters --- I love you 1,000 times
"Enchanted" is another great song from The Platters...in fact all of their songs are great.
Watching Amber's eye's go into trance mode after 3 words out of that man's lips is priceless! Probably one of the best voices of that time for sure.
I'd like to suggest an artist you have yet to react to. He is Neil Sedaka. During the late 50's to the early 60's, he was one of the most successful artists, His classics during that time-frame include "Breaking Up Is Hard To Do", "Calendar Girl", "Happy Birthday Sweet Sixteen", "Oh Carol" and "Right Next Door To An Angel". You can also check out his classic 70's song "Laughter In The Rain". Neil Sedaka is one of the greatest singer/songwriters and you would definitely love his music.

There was nothing more dreamy and romantic as slow dancing to the Platters Smoke Gets in Your Eyes.
Now you're getting to the days when I was a young kid loving this singing. Awakens something beautiful in my memories. Thanks
Finally! This is in my top 5 songs all time. Please do American Graffiti on the movie channel some time!
Posted my comment before i watched… Hey Amber, you want more 50’s music?? watch American Grafitti 😎
I was born the year this song came out. One of my all time favorites. Love the melody.
Love, love, love The Platters! They just make you want to sit and sway. It's "dreamy" music! Another great group is "The Inkspots".
Tony Williams (lead), Paul Robi, David Lynch, Herb Reed and Zola Taylor are the original members. Mercury Records.
You HAVE to watch American Graffiti!! The music is awesome and has lots of stars!! All 50’s music ❤
I remember listening to songs by the Platters with my Dad. He absolutely loved them and passed that love of their music to me. ❤️❤️
Now you're talking, when I was about 5 (50's) my dad (god rest his soul) used to attempt to sing this, but listening to the Platters wow, they had quite a few absolute gems, what a voice.
This was my grandmother's favourite song. I can smell her perfume in my mind. Happy sad.
"Ebb Tide", "Harbor Lights", and "If I Didn't Care" are also great Platters songs. So smooooooooth!
One of my favorite songs of all time!

Every time I hear this song, I just get such a warm feeling all over me. The lead singers voice is just soooooo goooood, and your comment about having a voice for opera was spot on, because the notes this guy was singing was strong and the control he has over his voice is really amazing. Thanks for sharing. Peace Out.
This was 1958 because my parents were still in high school. I remember listening to this as a little girl and 58 yrs later, I'm still listening to it.
You two are outstanding. You're playing the greatest music of the rock eras. Love it...❤❤❤

Very little production. No filters or anything. They really sounded like this
There's nothing wrong with checking out some of these classic songs. 50s & 60s music is often very good. I appreciate a lot of this era of music because my mom was really into the oldies.
"Twilight Time"; "Harbor Lights"; "Magic Touch"; "My Prayer" and so many others.
Excellent song. anything by The Platters is pretty great. ❤
My mom use to sing this….that is how I really got to know and love this tune! I never understood the “ smoke in my eyes” part! He gets very high for the ending! You have to hear that!
My era! Loved it! Thank you! Still have a record of them with all these songs. I'm 83.
I grew up watching my parents dance to this song in our living room at night. They were married 48 years and my mother said my dad was the "love of her life". She lived 20 years without him but missed him everyday. Thank you for the beautiful memories
MORE PLATTERS!!! They are LEGENDARY! THE GREAT PRETENDER and the Cover by FREDDIE MERCURY are MUST HEARS!!!!!!!
I absolutely love the Platters! If you like "silky" vocals, listen to anything by Johnny Mathis! "Chances Are" is one of his best.
My moms favorite vocal group
I love them too.
Tony Wtilliams- sweet, smooth voice.
This was my parent's music. I can envision them dancing to this from when I was just a small boy (I'm 63 now). My parents are gone but this music brings them back.
The Platters are amazing. I like, "My Prayer" as well....
The lead singer is Tony Williams! I was around in the 50s and their music was extremely popular. They were a wonderful group!
I simply ADORE this song!
the original platters line up consisted of Tony Williams lead vocal ,David Lynch tenor, Alex Hodge baritone, and Herb Reed bass.
I jumped at this tune as soon as I saw it.
An era in music that will never be the same. The orchestral beauty and the voices combine for a time that will never be repeated. With no TV, music was our world. The Platters were a great part of it.🎶🎶🎶
Great reaction. Buckets of Maple Syrup love from Canada ❤️❤️ 🇨🇦 🇨🇦
I'm 77 and Loved the Platters! Tears when I hear these. Bob.
@roberttyran3813 I find the older music transforms you to a perfect time in life and eliminates all your problems for 3 minutes or so. Merry Christmas. 🎅🎅🎄🎄🎶🎶 71 and loving it. 👍✌️🎶🇨🇦
You would adore the romantic songs of the 50’s. The Duprees are one of the best
Man, oh man, OH MAN!! Songs this great are rarely done today!
It's been mentioned a few times, and I have to second and reiterate it: The Platters "The Great Pretender" is one of the greatest songs of the early rock, and really, any era. Do yourself, and the rest of us, a favor and give it a watch. Please.
I'm relatively new to your site so after checking out your posted 3 I meander and look at other artists you listened to. This song brings back some happy and sad memories. My father loved this song, my mom smoked. This song as a child introduced me to soul. My dad gave me the gift of love for ALL music. His passing 18 years ago still causes me to cry. The worst part is as everyone ages we are losing more and more of these great artists I got to share with my father. It is beautiful gift and bless you both for sharing your joy and reactions with the world. It gives me faith that this music won't disappear; not be forgotten.
If we ever meet you are going to get an immense hug and words of thanks for the unexpected memories you have given me when I reminisce about the first time I heard a song. KEEP DOING WHAT YOU ARE DOING. SHARE THIS JOY. XOXO❤❤
"Twilight Time" and "Only You" by them, are two of my favorites. My grandmother used to play their music for us when we were kids, and her own kids grew up listening to her and my grandfather play it. 🙂

The Platters. Classic stuff.
Love the Platters🎵🎼🎶🎼🎵😎
It's surreal seeing all these artists that I remember when they were young and knowing that many of them are passed and who's left are getting very old.
Gives me goosebumps!! This song was also used in a movie that would be great as a review. Stars Richard Dreyfus and Holly Hunter..Always.
Love that movie!
Love it! Worked at a theater showing it back in the day and I loved watching the audiences reaction to that.
The song was sung by Irene Dunne in the 1934 film, "Roberta", which was originally on Broadway in 1933. Written by Jerome Kern.
"Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" was recorded in 1958 by The Platters. Written by American musical theatre composer Jerome Kern and lyricist Otto Harbach, “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes” was first introduced by singer and actress Tamara Drasin in the 1933 musical Roberta. When the smoke gets in your eyes you tear up. It is a metaphor for when you fall in love and then break up.
ᴛ᷈͟͟ʜ᷈͟͟ᴀ᷈͟͟ɴ᷈͟͟ᴋ᷈͟͟ꜱ᷈͟͟~͟~͟
Kern first wrote the tune for "Showboat" (1927). They didn't use it. Then he wrote a marching version for something else, they didn't use that either. Finally, with Harbach's lyrics, it was used in the Roberta musical, as the O.P. said. That in turn was made into a film with Irene Dunne in 1935. Clip below.
It's been recorded by a ton of artists. But the Platters version kind of eclipses everything else.

And also, the smoke from a burning love can blind you to what's really going on in a relationship.
Another classic featured on the American Graffiti soundtrack from the scene where sweethearts Steve and Laurie are compelled to dance a solo at the sock hop moments after they've been fighting. So in synch with young love.
@@Verlopil That's how I always understood this song, cuz the line: When your heart's on fire, you must realize smoke gets in your eyes."
Great choice brings back memories of my first love. A lovely green eyed blonde Puerto Rican girl in NYC. Unfortunately, my Mom caught on and found a job for me. We danced to this and all the Platters hits of the late 50's. saw them live once or twice. Great group i have three of their collections.

Lyrics, “When your hearts on fire…smoke gets in your eyes.” And earlier, “All who love are blind,” The fire of love will blind from the smoke that follows a love (fire) that dies. He thought his love was too strong until it was “blown away” and he was now “without my love.” When his friends laugh and deride him he finally realizes the truth that when that lovely flame dies it produces smoke that bring tears to the eyes. That seems to fit!
I've heard other versions of this song, but nobody comes close to The Platters - it's been one of my favourite songs for well over 50 years!

This song is in the movie Always with Richard Dryfus and Holly Hunter❤!

It is so great seeing younger generation, like Jay and Amber, enjoy all the sounds from my younger life.
The Platters had 4 Lead Singers from the 50s - 90s. Tony Williams was Lead during their most prominent period between the 50s, 60s.
