This song has a special place in my life. When I was a kid this song came out and at that time I had a dog, a boxer. His name was Duke and every time this song came on the radio or Gene was on TV singing it my dog would run around the house trying to find who was calling him.
I remember an old Mike Douglas Show. Mike had David and Julie Eisenhower on and they said this was their song.
Whenever I play Jungle Love by Steve Miller Band my dog does the same thing when he hears that whistle at the end of the synth riff in the intro.
Gotta love dogs. :-)
Oh goodness… I was going to reply that my best friend’s mom played this song constantly on the turntable. And they had a boxer (named Abby) but we still danced with that dog to this song so many times. 😊❤️✌️
What a sweet memory! 🐶
The reason ya'll love older music is because it's pure talent. No special effects, just great artists!!!
Fax 👏
Pure talent makes pure music
Gene Chandler was very influential in transitioning from traditional Doo Wop to a more 60’s sound. This still stands up. ✌️
Gene Chandler lived down the street from my grammar school in Chicago. He came to perform at the school and afterwards I introduced my 8-year old self to him and shook his hand. That's a memory!
Vanessa, I grew up in Chicago too! What Grammar school? I went to Francis W Parker/North Side
@@susanpolice8465 St. Raphael/South Side
Oh, Vanessa, how cool is that.!
I remember John Goodman performing this song at the end of "King Ralph". Such a great song. BTW, Gene is now 85 years young and still performs from time to time.
That was such a fun movie.
Patrick Hodges…. I grew up with a good friend named Patricia Hodge we sang “Duke of Earl!” So fun!
On PBS, too, about 10-15 years ago. The doo wop show.
GREAT movie. John Goodman was perfect for that role, and I loved Camille Coduri as Miranda.... she was great in "Nuns on the Run" with Eric Idle and the late Robbie Coltrane. Got it on DVD.
I grew up in the 60s, but every time this song comes on, since King Ralph, I see John, in my head, singing it---loved that movie!!
This song really makes you appreciate this era of music. :)
We were lucky in the 70's because we got the 50's revival. Not only did we get Grease, Happy Days and American Graffiti, most of the stars from that era were around to cash in on it.
I was 6 when this song came out and I still love it today. 60 years ago, man time flies. The only way to revive it is by playing it for future generations.💖🙏
You are so right Susan, i was 7 when this came out and came to the US in '63, but i remember many of these classic gems from way back. This music stays with you, such good times, life was so simpler back then. Great reaction review Rob Squad.
I was 6 also when mom, dad, uncle and auntie, mom and pop cousins was partying to this song and some Otis Redding, and Sam Cook, don't make music like that anymore.
Songs like this touch people, move them. They feel fresh and amazing 60 years later.
You can hear them a thousand times and still want to hear them again.
I wonder how many songs from today will hold up this well.
A minimal amount.......most of them sound so much alike...they don't stand out from the literal ocean of blazé dreck
@@andrewpetik2034 Serious questions: Why do you think they sound so much alike? Is it the artists, the record companies, the fans?
@@matthewhudson5685 record companies
@@matthewhudson5685 Like 4 people write all the hit songs
Believe it or not, this was played on pop radio stations fairly regularly into the mid 80s. I'm a 70s baby and *I myself* grew up hearing this and watching my folks' generation geek out to it, in '85, '86, when they were late-20s to early-40s.
Talking about this era of music ! So great! His vocals were smooth and loving ….We would sing along always!
@@sheilameyers152 And how.
Same.
The first Post Office I worked at in Northern Illinois (late 1980s) played an 'oldies' station in the back room and I have SO many memories tied up in this song!!
ABSOLUTELY. PURE TALENT.
Another song from that time that you will like is “Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me” by Mel Carter.
Now that man had one heck of a voice. Good call!!
Yes, indeed!
Johnny Horton is another 50s & 60s singer Johnny has a lot of big hits even though he died in a accident in 63 .... "battle of new Orleans "is his biggest hit....
Funny you should mention him. I was just listening to his song "Whispering PInes" not 15 minutes ago. Love Johnny Horton.
Love Johnny Horton, and have his Best of. North to Alaska is my favorite
For my Dad it was Honky tonk man he played that one a lot. I like that as well and ballad of new orleans, sink the bismark. My favorites though are songs like ole slew foot and sleepy eyed jonn for the humor )
@@sherigrow6480 That's a good movie too. They should do a reaction to it on their movie channel!
I've requested Johnny Horton with no luck yet. Honky Tonk Man, All For The Love Of A Girl, When It's Springtime In Alaska, Comanche etc.etc. So many great tunes from him
This came out back in (1962) and made Gene Chanler a household name. I remember back 61 years ago as an 8-year-old boy strutting down the streets of New York City while singing this song. Those were great memories.
I am so glad that I was born in the 60s. My grandparents had records going back to the late 1800s and into the 1940s. My parents played music from the 40s and 50s on the radio and albums. My older siblings played music from the 60s. Add in the current music on the radio from the 70s and 80s along with my own albums. I got exposed to and really got to enjoy all of the music from the greatest times.
I also got to hear music from by gone era's because of my grandparents, parents and then older siblings. Then now my generation . Gen-Xer.
This generation coming up has very little musical depth. 😢
It's sad really. 😓
@@briansmith48 Because listening to music isn't such a communal thing anymore? Each individual with their own individual headphones strapped on like a feeding tube.
Say what you will about "Boomers" we were there to carry music from Glenn Miller to Led Zeppelin... and beyond.
I was born in 1958 and I absolutely agree! Growing up I heard all the greats my parents listened to like Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett. Then onto to everything I loved from the Beach Boys, Beatles to Journey and Bon Jovi and so much more in between! We had such diverse music and the absolute best of times!! 😊
@@sjw5797 You nailed it in one mate! Mic drop comment! 👍🏻
Wow! I was born in 1958 but I remember growing up listening to this record.. You guys make me feel so OLD!!🤣 But I'm honored to see that you guys appreciate the music that I was raised on..❤🎶👏🏽👏🏽👍🏽✌🏽
“And we’ll walk through my Dukedom, and a paradise we will share” absolutely epic!
I saw Gene Chandler in concert about 10 years ago and when he sang this song the ladies went crazy for him even after all these years he still sang great!
Such a classic. I have loved this song from the first time I heard it. Perfect song to do the stroll to
This song holds a special place in my heart. My father's name was Verl and I grew up listening to him sing this with his name instead. When he passed six years ago, we decided to play this song at his funeral. Everyone was smiling through the tears because it was such a part of his personality his entire life. Thanks for the smiles.
When my grandma remarried after she was widowed, she ended up with a husband named Merton and a brother-in-law named Verlin but everyone called him Verlie. He was a school custodian and his wife Virginia was a school bus driver.
Thank you for sharing such a beautiful memory with us. For now on, every time I hear this song It will remind me of your story.
The song is 62 years old in 2024 and still carriers its weight!. Gene Chandler is great, but who was the background group! They were pros!!
The history of music early 60s can’t be written without this song.
I'll turn 61 years old this year. In the 70's and early 80's one of my older sisters (4 years older) and I were totally hooked on 50's music. This is one of our favorites.
Been waiting for this one!! Great stuff!! Need to do some more Sam Cooke, Otis Redding, Sam and Dave!!
Second the Sam Cooke recommendation.
Sam Cooke....”You Send Me” ... Please!
The transition when he hits the chorus gets me. The whole song changes during that time. The rhythm, the backbeat and his pitch goes up several octaves. He does it in a way that you don't really grasp how much has changed. Listen closely to appreciate it. He performed this live a few dozen years later and still sounded incredible.
Gene Chandler had a hit "Groovy Situation" released in 1970.
I second this for their next reaction to Gene Chandler. I’ve always loved this song.
In the 1980s this song was used in an Australian advertisement for Decore shampoo. Instead of singing Duke of Earl the people would sing Decore. Look out for the 1988 advert on RUclips.
Ah I've just noticed you've not seen The Marcels - Blue Moon! Probably the most famous doo-wop song ever recorded!
I grew up with the music of the 40s, 50s and 60s. In the 60s, everybody was trying for the falsetto. So much better than what you hear today. Your reactions crack me up.
When I was in college in the early sixties, this song literally caused the walls of the student center to vibrate. Full volume--great memories.
This was the top song when i had my first date as a freshman in high school.....never will forget it!
You two are absolutely awesome for playing music like this. Timeless classics!!!!! :)
Wow talk about a flashback. I was 9 years old but my older sisters loved this. I grew up listening to their 45rpm records.
I was eight-years-old when this was a hit. Now, I’m 70 and it still sounds great!
eddie holmans lonely girl is a treat for the ears
The vocals on the Doo Woop is really amazing. Keep in mind this is actually their voices. This is a long time before computers.
This has elements of doopwop and R&B. This was a huge hit when I was little kid. Gene's voice is amazing.
This takes me back to the 6th grade😁 We would sing it because it was just fun.
I love hearing songs that take you back. Brings back memories.
Jay & Amber, you'd like his "Nothing Can Stop Me"!! (1965) Duke Of Earl was 1962.
edit - you would love Percy Sledge -"When a Man Loves a Woman"!!! (the Original soul classic from 1966!)
One of the best tunes for crazing back in the day. One of my favorites.
We used to sing this in the car when it came on the radio, 1960s. I feel so much emotion hearing this❤️
Arthur Conley "Sweet Soul Music" (1967) Beat Club. I think you'll really enjoy his moves as well as the horns.
My goodness!! 😳
I had almost forgotten how absolutely FAAAAAAAABUULLLLOOOOUUUUSSS this is!!
Saw Gene Chandler at numerous concerts over the years, mostly of them "oldies" shows. He would always enter the auditorium through the rear exit doors, with all the spotlights focused to the back of the room. So cool! Live shows sounded just like the recording!
One of the most iconic doo wop songs of the era, along with Blue Moon.
He also sings the gorgeous ‘I’m The Traveling Kind’…that song is so beautiful!
I'm 74 and love your reactions to the music of the 50s and 60s. I have one issue, though. It was the MALT shop not the "soda pop" shop where kids gathered back then. LOLOL Keep on keeping on.
Love your reactions to the older songs. Would recommend reacting to The Association, starting with Never My Love.
...and followed by "Cherish"! :)
"Along Comes Mary"! Their tour-de-force.
First album I ever bought. Unfortunately it was for my sister.
I love this music ! I am Brazilian! I listen everyday this song ! Duke of earl ❤
OMG!! You two are in the soft rock documentary!! Congratulations!! I felt like a proud parent ❤❤❤
Please react to -1.The Clovers: Love Potion Number 9 -2.The Coasters: Poison Ivy -3.Lloyd Price: Stagger Lee -4.Jody Reynolds: Endless Sleep -5.Ray Peterson: Tell Laura I Love Her -6.? and the Mysterians: 96 Tears 7.The Robins: Smokey Joe's Cafe -Thanks!!!
This is classic!!!😂😂😂😂😂I have some funny memories from this! Duke Duke Duke Duke of Earl❤❤❤❤❤
Now, get your parents to dance to this. This song is a "Cha-cha" and watching people who can really dance, to this song, is what was happening in 1962. One of the top songs of the early 60's.
The song you need to hear by Gene is "Rainbow'65 ". He's still alive & performing .
I am so thankful for growing up in this Era of music!! The absolute best music!!!
Great song. Thanks for showing GOATs.
Now you're talking!!! This is a for sure a "stroll" song, as in the dance the stroll. Many, many memories. These were my young teen years. 💞
Gene Chandler isn't his real name. He was part of the group "The Earls". When they auditioned for a record company. They presented this song as a B side to their first 45. The record company knew it was a hit just as the other song was. They didn't want them to release 2 hit songs at the same time. So they released "Duke of Earl" as a separate solo act. Just to get them both out there right away. The "Earls" had some damn good Doo Wop hits.
Best word ever in a song, my " Dukedom" only the Duke knew he had a Dukedom.
Awesome song.. awesome performance… thanks guys
Also gene chandler sang The Rainbow 65 and rainbow 80 Mind blowing!
At concerts he came on stage wearing a cape and top hat, walking with a walking cane. I saw him live at 2 concerts. He was amazing!
this is an example of "DOO WOP"- the harmonies with the crazy non- words in the harmony
Hard to overstate how popular this song was when I was ten. I know it like the back of my hand.
Another song by Gene Chandler you might want to check out is "Groovy Situation"!
Tutti frutti- little Richard
It’s a man’s workd- James brown
I feel good- James brown
Oh my goodness, this was the coolest song back in the day. Junior High for me.
Chandler had a #1 Pop and #1 R&B hit with this one in 1962. Although he released a number of singles through the '60s he didn't hit pay dirt again until 1970 with the wonderfully smooth and charming "Groovy Situation" (#12 Pop and #8 R&B).
I learned how to dance to this song, along with 4 or 5 other songs that were my father's absolute favorites. I miss dancing with him. Miss you Daddy!
The flip side, "Rainbow", is fantastic.
When I was a young boy I saw a movie about early rock & roll. They had a performance of this man performing Duke of Earl. That must have been 60 years ago or more, and I still remember the effect that had on me. Thank you for showing this.
Now! One of the ultimate Cool performers! Enjoy! One of my drum corps buddies started wearing a cape because of Gene. Sharp! You go, Amber! . Go Luca! It'll never come back again. Unless a lot of things got kinder and gentler. Sigh! Great reaction, guys. Thanks.
This fantastic song always puts me in a good mood. Never got tired of it in 60 yrs. Great from start to finish. A GROOVY SITUATION in 70 by Gene is very very good also.
Your show does help bring old music back... Showing another generation great music from the past and a trip down memory lane for the older views...
This was sooo huge in my home town of Brooklyn, NYC. Every teen dance party had this going. A classic legend.
My parents used to listen to the "oldies but goodies" and I didn't HATE it, but I definitely didn't appreciate it like I do now. I've lived through enough garbage pop music now to really see what we are missing out on. A) This music is pure talent, no tech tricks involved. If they had to perform a surprise concert, they could without skipping a beat. Nobody would have to scramble for laptops and tablets. And B) they had the good sense to hit you within seconds of the start, and finish like 2 minutes later. None of these songs ever wear out their welcome.
I was born in 1964 and I remember this Song from my Youth. I heard it on the Radio Stations all of the Time. When we had a 50's Sock hop in my Junior High Days in the 70's this song was played at the Dance!
🙋🏻♂️ GENE ‘The Duke’ CHANDLER
One of my favorites, ever 🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾
Portland Oregon USA 🇺🇸
This is the kind of song you always heard on Happy Days and American Graffiti- shows like that.
I have adored this song from the first time I heard it in the early 70s (our "oldies" station had a great playlist).
"Get A Job" by the Silhouettes hit the Number 1 spot on the Billboard pop and the R&B singles charts in February of 1958.
Do-woppish fun that showed up in movies like "Stand By Me", "Trading Places", "American Graffiti", and "Good Morning, Vietnam". You need to hear all of it someday....
I was 7 when this came out and it was played all the time for years. Always one of my favorite songs. Good choice
PLEASE watch AMERICAN GRAFFITI!! Full of great music from the 50’s and a great cast and story!
This was a HUGE hit!
Kath - YES !! For a song declaring himself to be a duke of 'Earl', it was huge !!
Which would indicate it's the voices, not the writing. Now 75, the memories come back.
This is why I love music, a good song will stand the rest of time
Wow y'alls grandparents were babies when this song was being made 🤣 I'm getting old 😘 I was a few years old too 👏
As a little kid, this was a favorite. We would get together with two other families after church and all of us kids would do skits for the parents. We would dress up and act out the songs or lip sync them. We would do Carol Burnett skits too. We did a skit for 'Leader of the Pack'. My little brother had a leather jacket and he rode his tricycle and we used our Barbie van to run into him so he could crash his bike like in the song. No iphones, no video games, no tablets, just pure, good old imagination.
Thank you so much for reacting to this. It was one of my favourites back in the day. This song was huge and always played at our high school dances. Everyone loved it. Thanks again. 👏👏🇨🇦🇨🇦
When I was a child in 1965,we loved when the radio station would flash back to this one.
Gene Chandler aka The Duke of Earl still resides in Chicago and is still considered One of the Favorites!!!
My dad was born in 1950 he danced in elementary to this song and Little Eva with the Loca Motion. He told me so many stories when he grew up in Connecticut.
OMG 🤗🤗🤗
Makes me actually start swaying ❣️
My uncles. My mom's 5 brothers had a band where they sang Motown classics and the songs of the 50s 60s and 70s. This was an amazing song My uncle Ron sang. ❤️
For some reason, this one and "Blue Moon" are synonymous to me.
I was born in 87 but this is one of my favorite songs of all time. My mom used to play records when I was a kid and this song was something that I gravitated to. It will always have a special place in my childhood and beyond.
And that’s more like, a ton of music for you two from the 60s and 70s for you to discover.😎🍺
I love this song! I've always loved oldies.
I never took this song too seriously, but I do appreciate it now! Have grown to love Doo-wop!
Thanks for the trip down memory lane. I graduated HS in’66 so, Ahhhhhhhh! The music then was just that, music, pure and unmanufactured.
I feel so old as much of the stuff from the '50s & '60s you react to is from my childhood. I have always got a kick out of this song and will find myself singing the chorus around the house.
I'm about to hit 60 in March so this came out before I was born but, music has always been part of my family life and as usual all people relate to the songs they hear at certain time of their lives. When I was about 10 and beyond I loved to listen to everything from the 50's to my time period. Then later in the 90's when I was in my 30's I worked midnight shift with a man in his 50's and out of respect of my elders we listened to "HIS" music which was oldies. I love that phrase because now oldies is the stuff from the 90's or later. He was totally shocked that I could "Name That Tune" in 3 notes or less every time, lol. I love all the songs you have listened to and figure you will eventually run out unless you really go back in time and glad you did this one. Even though your channel is called Rob Squad I call it Amber and Robs Squad because Ambers my girl. Okay Rob, you're my boy too as we love you both in our home.
