I bake the Easy Mold up to 400F, so yes. That instruction is for resin use with the mold, not clay, and its included with the printed instructions (or PDF on-line) inside the box.
I had a similar experience where the back of the resin was clear but any part of the resin that touched the mold had a frosty look. Very disappointing because it's expensive and you don't get a lot of silicone putty to work with. Thanks for the video because it answered my question about why the resin looked so bad.
At first I was pissed at this because I literally just bought some Amazing Mold Putty today. But in retrospect I am very grateful that you made this video because I saved myself insane amounts of time and frustration by watching this. Since I saw this before opening it, I can go back to the store and switch it out for Easy Mold before getting started on my project. The inconvenience of going back to Micheal's is FAR less than that of trying to do a project with improper materials. So thank you
Great testing job. They should pay you to test products.. :) Thanks a lot as I hope to be moving into this arena some time soon and the more I know about the products the better. And as always you did a fabulous job. Thanks!
Thank you! You just saved me an awful lot of time, stress, and money. I'm on a very fixed income, so starting something like this is a bit of a treat for me. Buying a second batch would have to wait a while.
I am a resin virgin.... but I have noticed in my research that the humidity in you're area makes a difference! There are so many variables when it comes to outcomes! I am ready to get started!
Perfect timing! Thanks u I work in resin all the time and for my etsy shop and just traded with someone and got some really cool items I'm going to make a mold of which I have never done and was gonna use the AMP but now I will use the CC! Woohoo I also have yet to try oyumaru ;)!!
When you've taken the resin casts out of the molds, how pliable are they? I want to make something but I want it to be slightly flexible when it's been cast, can you recommend anything? Thanks
Yes I did mean the actual castings. I want to make a symbol to put onto a sculpture, but I need it to be somewhat pliable for me to then mold over the sculpture. Also, I would like to make a replica of a toy sword for an action figure, that however, doesn't need to be flexible. How would I do that? Thanks for your reply :-)
You need to use a release agent, it keeps the resin from sticking to the mold, it will help for both products. Michaels sells it "Castin' Craft Clear Mold Release/Conditioner"
I have been using AMP for a while now. It works for me with both a Bondo/Fiberglass resin mixture, as well as Smoothcast 61D resin. Both of which work without a mold-release (though it extends mold life) Im not sure what problems AMP is giving you, but I just wanted to add that I dont have the same problems.
Does the mold puddy scratch easily? I make pendants and the plastic molds I use scratch so easily I can only use them a couple times. I'm thinking about trying the mold putty in hopes that it's a better quality then the plastic molds. Anyone know? Thanks...
Found myself watching this video totally by chance.. I was looking for some easy way to mold little things. I had watched a video about Amazing Putty just before I watched yours, and yours really gives a nice perspective to how different these products can be!! So it's a very nice and informative (and fun, due to your mannerisms :-) ) video to watch! I wanted to ask if you know: would this Easy Mold work for casting pewter items?
Good to know this about resin casting. I haven't done resin yet, and the Amazing putty works great for polymer clay, at least as far as I can tell (just started using it today). I think I need to wash my molds before doing the first cast, though, they seem like they're flaking a bit, and polymer clay shows everything.
Hi. Have you tried the resin that is made for amazing molds? I use any clay and the resin with great results. Only drawback is it drys white but have used paint, glimmer mist, and ink to color it. Finish off my pieces with mica powders or glitter glue.
My baked polymer clay has silicone putty stuck all over the surface :( I don't know why it does that - it sometimes doesn't for some reason. It said to let it set for 25 minutes so I let it set for over 25 minutes - but once I take the clay out of the mold, there's residue all over the clay's surface. Anyone else had this problem? Anyone got a solution? :( it is very annoying because sometimes there's no residue but most of the time there is.
I had this result and did some looking into it, I didn't want to lose my piece so I put a top coat of resin on and it got rid of the problem entirely. so if you have a piece that you dont want to lose like I did, just brush a coat of resin over it and your good to go. I was devasted when I learned I was going to have to reglaze all my pieces because it takes so god damn long and it's toxic. But thanx for the tip. I'll have to buy that other molding stuff.
Depends on what you're moulding... as other have said, use a separating medium such as Vaseline. I am using Amazing to cast 1/35 scale soldiers for vehicles and it works great for that.
Amazing Mold Putty works like crap for making resin jewelry components, unfortunately. Shitty finish. No way for me to get a perfectly smooth application of petroleum jelly in the mold, so every ridge and lip of the jelly ends up in the casting. Sucks.
@TheMrsyau The UK? Just look for a molding product specific to resin use. Or maybe you can email the manufacturer and ask them if the sell the product in your country.
I should have watched your video befor i bought amazing putty for making resin molds - but now i know it's not my fault that it doesn' work .. Thank you!
Sucks, I know. Lots of people are telling me to use mold release, but why buy another product when one works just fine? I'll stick with Easy Mold, thanks! :) What did work with Amazing was petroleum jelly as a release agent. However, it was difficult to get a perfectly smooth application in to the mold. Any little ridge or bump of the jelly will show up in the casting.
Thank you for posting this review of the two! Ugh I bought the Amazing Putty & Resin, and even the two together have trouble! Sometimes the resin won't set in the putty, or it never dries for some reason, either way, it's a pain in the butt. I have a coupon for Michale's so I'll probably be picking up some Easy Mold soon!
Wow, thanks for sharing. I have been thinking of making my own molds for cabs and this was perfect timing. I'd contact the manufacturer of the not so "Amazing Putty" and tell them to watch your video. It says right on their box that it's for resin! Ask for your money back too. That stuff is not cheap!
I believe that tsummerlee did not add a mold release agent. There is a spray for that. Unless she did so offscreen, in which case I stand corrected. That said, since one doesn't seem to need that step for easy mold, I'd allege that easy mold is better.
i just bought the amazing mold putty prior to watching this and casted a perfect detailed small gear with amazing results with no sticking what so ever . I dont know what her issue was with it but i noticed she never mentioned anything about using any mold release which I did buy along with the putty it was a castin craft brand spray also from michaels I think it was 11 dollars and it will last a long time . Like i said before , flawless results and the whole process including making the mold and letting the resin harden in about an hour and a half . just a tip from a fellow diyer
@Bubblegumdrop360 It says right in directions for Easy Mold that if you want to use the mold for resin, then it needs to cure for 24 hours. Clay is another story. 17 minutes is fine for clay, but not for resin.
So it has been my thinking that it's the Castin'Craft clear epoxy that is the problem. I'm considering using the Amazing Clear Epoxy - Or maybe I will by the castin craft putty and it will work with the Castin' Craft resin. What kind of epoxy did you use? I'm thinking it may have been the Castin'Craft Easy Cast Clear Resin. Maybe that has something to do with it - keeping it in the same brand. Really though would love to use what brand of epoxy you used. Thanks for the demonstration
Forgive me, but are you asking if the actual castings are flexible? I think that's what you're asking. They aren't flexible at all because they're made out of plastic, but if you made one thin enough it might bend a little bit right out of the mold. They'll continue to harden over the next day. That's been my experience, anyway.
did you try mold release? heres something you can mention about the purple one. its non toxic and you can use it for making chocolate molds. Heres something else you probably didnt know: you can recast sculpy from your purple stuff mold. The mold should be as uncomplciated as possible, but it really does work with some practice. you have to make a negative mold which requires 2 mold makings, be brave! stay wild!
@@Morna777 It wasn't a film coating it. She said that the Amazing Silicone Putty was old. Over time, Resin will wear down Silicone, and the "glossy finish" will become "matte". A mold release spray helps to protect the Silicone from the Resin. It would have been a more fair Test if she compared a new mold from each. Not a New vs Old mold.
When you use any type of putty mold, you need to use mold release; it acts like a lubricant to keep mold pieces from sticking together (if doing a 2-part mold) and prevents the putty from sticking to the resin. There are commercially available mold release products but you can also use very thinly applied petroleum jelly.
So, both products are about equally good for polymer clay but Easy Mold is much better for resin - am I getting that right? Also, just for the sake of comparison, have you tried various different kinds of resin with the Amazing Mold putty? I'm just curious as to whether its a problem just with the resin you're using.
>_< I thought I was the only person with the problem! It was my first time resin casting, and I was using Amazing Mold Putty. I poured the resin into the mold. When it was fully cured, I pulled it out and saw the bits of rubber stuck to the surface of the resin.
I've used amazing mold putty for small resin projects, What I do is wait for the resin piece to cure, use and old toothbrush and soap to scrub off the residue, then when it dries, I add glaze to it. I made some resin gummy bears and they look fine. :)
I just watched a guy do a 2 part mold and cast a resin piece from it. It looked good. I have some coming in the mail and now I am worried. Casting mediums are not cheap and I hate to rhink I have to spend more $$$. Has anyone else had the same problem? I should not have watched this I guess:). What did you cast? I will look for the video and see. Maybe I will have better luck. Thanks for sharing.
Mold release isn't very expensive, just hard to find around here. Because I make things for jewelry applications, they need to come out perfectly without flaws or requiring extra work. If you're worried, just spend a little extra and buy or order some spray on mold release.
That's Because you should be using a mold release spray, with any type of mold made of putty or plastic anything lie that should always be done with mold release spray castin craft makes one that they sell at Michael's You should try it.
You don't have to let it sit for 24hours I only leave it for 17 minutes and it's really dry flexible and good with clay I love it better than any ether mold.
I wouldn't say Amazing Putty isn't good for all resin. I use envirotex lite which is a epoxy resin and I haven't had any problems with Amazing Putty. But, I can see that another resin might not work as with this molding putty.
I'm surprised you're having trouble with the Amazing Putty for two part epoxy resins. I use it all the time for casting model parts from small to big. I casted the hood to the 57 Chevy in the picture in my avi. Thats a hood made with Gorilla Glue two part epoxy. What I do is use Isopropyl Alcohol as a release agent. Its around the house and easy to drop on the putty and let it work in the with piece I'm casting. It helps the part pull out very easy and smooth with no sticking. Another tip for using Vaseline as your release agent is to take it and warm it up first. Warm it till it gets thin and liquid like, you can then dip a smooth bristle brush into the liquid Vaseline and you won't have those clumpy raised edges in your mold. It'll create a smooth barrier on the amazing putty to let you release the piece and keep the shape and texture. I usually just go with the Iso method now days as its there and easy to apply. The key with using anything like Oils or Vaseline as a release agent is to use it very sparingly as you apply it. Too much and you do get left with uneven surfaces. But if you gently apply it in thin coats, say a very tiny small drop of olive oil, it goes a long way. Theres no need to flood the mold with oil or vaseline. Hope it helps some out there having problem with Amazing Putty. I use it to make copies of lots of parts for my model building and its been great to my workbench.
Nancy Burleson Gorilla Glue certainly does! They make a two part, Resin + Hardener 5 minute epoxy in clear. They also make another 2 part clear epoxy that's a longer set time. I love their other lines of glue as well. GG 2 part epoxies have worked well for me. Just try to use em up once you open them, I noticed after about 5 or 6 months time it doesn't seem to set up well.
This shouldn't happen if you're using mold release spray. This happens with store-bought molds too. I think in some cases you can also use a thin, even coat of Vaseline if you can't find mold release where you're getting the resin.
It works great to create a basic object, yes, but it leaves a terrible finish on them because the resin physically bonds to the material . That's been the consistent problem I and others have had with Amazing. As far as EMP falling apart, I haven't had that experience. A quick Google search of problems revealed nothing for EMP, but multiple complaints from multiple sources for AMP and resin.
I found a video on here in which the guy used Amazing Mold Putty along with Amazing Resin Craft which turned out just fine so try if that works better for you. I don't know what's available where you live but try it. Good luck thanks for your video.
dear TCbeads, GRACIAS POR TUS TUTORIALES, I really have fun with most of your tutotials...... specially making cabochons, you are a very persistant person .... try and try until you get . I will try just with resin and lets see what it comes out. I know you like spanish language so por favor siga teniendo el buen humor que a mi me hace sentir feliz
@thumbalinamom Oh, I've had the Amazing Putty forever, and I've used half of it, so I wouldn't bother asking for a refund. I suppose the manufacturers don't realize that resin users expect a decent finish when a piece is removed, but ya, when you have a picture of a necklace on the front, you'd think they'd bother to warn people.
I can't speak for clay and other resins but if you use the Amazing Mod resin made by same company as the putty, it works fine, doesn't stick, only problem I have with Amazing Putty is it doesn't cure firm enough to do detailed parts, like a plastic spur gear which has these fine detailed teeth, when you mold with Amazing Putty the rubberyness of it stops all teeth being modled right and causes a tapered effect if that is right word when I use the resin to make model. Green Stuff seems to be better for something so exact. Easy Mo seems like green Stuff, but with all these molds as others have said some lubricant is required, use a spray one would for greasing a pan in kitchen for stove is what I'd use., also a hint when you pour resin, maybe not from so high as you wil get air bubbles and one can tap the mold why it is curing to get them out. If doing something you like did in video.
Interesting. I've used Amazing Mold Putty with Clear Casting Epoxy from Castin' Craft. The first time I did it - it was perfect. No problems. The second time, the epoxy never hardened properly causing a huge mess. I must not have mixed it right - even though I thought i measured pretty well. But the part that stayed gooey was the part that was in contact with the air and it was fine on the inside where it was touching the Amazing Mold Putty! Wierd.
I had just tried amazing mold putty after having used easy mold b4. The store was out of easymold so i said what the heck it's supposed to be good right! UMM NO amazing mold putty is so weak and crumbly it sucks retuned it the next day!! oh and i do polymer clay and amazing mold putty stuck all over my clay soooo bad
Just trying to decide what molding product I want to buy. Thanks for the info and the time it took to share this with us. :-)

I only use EnviroTex Lite epoxy now. Its actually a pour on finish, but works very well for mold applications. Never had a problem with it.
Great testing job. They should pay you to test products.. :) Thanks a lot as I hope to be moving into this arena some time soon and the more I know about the products the better. And as always you did a fabulous job. Thanks!
@TheMrsyau I honestly don't recall. I did use a 40 or 50% off coupon at Michaels, and probably didn't pay more than 12.00 with that discount.
Thank you! You just saved me an awful lot of time, stress, and money. I'm on a very fixed income, so starting something like this is a bit of a treat for me. Buying a second batch would have to wait a while.
I'm new to making molds I'm just wondering if I can use cut shape cardstock to form it with easy mold putty. Thanks in advance!
Thank You so much for making this video before i went out and bought some Putty! It helped me a lot Thanks!!
Woohoo I also have yet to try oyumaru ;)!!
do u hav to mix it very fast for the easy mold
Do you have pictures of your resin pieces that are finished in jewlry pieces> I would love to see them your jewelry. Thanks for the video!
So the easy mold is only better for resin?
You need to use a release agent, it keeps the resin from sticking to the mold, it will help for both products. Michaels sells it "Castin' Craft Clear Mold Release/Conditioner"

It cuts easily but I don't think it really scratches. It being flexible helps with that.

It's very thin. But when resin sets, it's hard, and I need it to be slightly pliable.
Hi. Have you tried the resin that is made for amazing molds? I use any clay and the resin with great results. Only drawback is it drys white but have used paint, glimmer mist, and ink to color it.

is it flexiable?
rubbery feeling?
This might be a silly question..but you make the mold from a piece of thick paper?
Good tips! I'm so glad I got to watch this video. Thank you for making it. Now I know. :) Two thumbs up!

@charitymharrison lol, yes they should! ;) I promise to stay objective, too!
This shouldn't happen if you're using mold release spray. This happens with store-bought molds too. I think in some cases you can also use a thin, even coat of Vaseline if you can't find mold release where you're getting the resin.
You may need to lay down an Epoxy Resin release agent in the mold first.
you can only use amazing resin
Eh, slightly bendable. Again, it depends on how thick it is.
Sure.
No it is great for both I use polymer clay in it
for resin? eeewew. XD thank you for this video it helped a lot :))))
very useful thanks!
Maybe with the amazing mould putting put some flour all over it and it might work (never had any mould putty so if it doesn't work don't blame me!) :)
amazing mold putty costs more. i just bought EMP for that reason. AMP has 0.5lb more in the box
I'd just buy a toy sword, or steal one from behind the bar! (lol) You know, those little swords they put in your cocktail?
They said they're from HK. That's hong kong..
I think EMP cost a bit more.
Wierd.
i know right...
the purple looks like brown
I had just tried amazing mold putty after having used easy mold b4. The store was out of easymold so i said what the heck it's supposed to be good right! UMM NO amazing mold putty is so weak and crumbly it sucks retuned it the next day!! oh and i do polymer clay and amazing mold putty stuck all over my clay soooo bad
