Hey Guys, hope you enjoyed the weekly videos. I might not be able to get another one out next week but if I don't, there will be one the week after :) Do you guys prefer modern software exploration or historic software experimentation? Got a favorite time period? (80's, 90's, 00's) etc let me know here and I'll take it into consideration for future videos!
Thanks, I'm at a point where I'd like to show off some 80's software but I'm feeling that most of that software doesn't have enough content for a full OSFT video. I might need to do some 5 minute short videos.
Philip, I go crazy when I see a new OSFirstTimer episode! I LOVE THIS VIDEO!!! You need to try out more parody operating systems or get her to use css and javascript in html5!
Jack Long Windows 10 is crap with every single point. The interface, the theme, the stability... just everything. Windows 7 is at least not bloated compared to the crappy Windows 10.
I personally like the flat style. I don't like iOS 6 or below but I like iOS 7 because of it's flat design. iOS 11 and 12 made it more 3D with more shadows but I still like it more.
9:18 The latest version of Windows 10 right now (April 2018 update) updated its look a little bit. Of course flat design is still the trend, but if you upgrade to it, there will be some gradients, glossiness, and shadows, including in the start menu.
I wouldn't say Apple is going for 3D design.. The new macOS Mojave or iOS 12 are all flat-looking. Sure, more shadows, but I wouldn't say it's not flat design. Though to be fair, Microsoft was the one that introduced flat design with the Zune and Windows Phone, and then Apple followed along with iOS 7 and Android with Lollipop...
iOS 7 started with flat design now at least Apple started moving to 3D once again. Which is kinda obvious. A lot of brands with make up or technology or anything in general started showing tiny 3D designs here and there.
Also you might have to make sure all the transparency and show colors settings are on in Settings > Personalisation but I don't know for sure I still have the Fall Creators Update
27:24 You're actually not that far off, both MacOS and windows has added a little bit of shadows and 3D into their icons, they're still flat-ish, but they're not literally 2 colors in a box, which is a step in the right direction, and on MacOS, they do have quite a bit of gradients and 3d in their icons now in Big Sir
Everytime I watch your videos it feels it in time traveling because most of your videos never pop up in my subscriptions box and whenever I see you on my recommended videos the list I get excited and click the video. But then I go through your most recent uploads and I see that you uploaded a lot of videos this month. Then I go back to the last video that I watched which was the house to her and it says it was 6 months ago and I get shocked because I do not remember that being 6 months ago! It felt like maybe a month ago that I watch that video but holy crap that is really crazy.
Definitely an improvement. However, seems like Microsoft took a huge step back when Windows 8 was released and is still barely making it back to vista standards. I feel this may be the start of the move away from flat design but I kinda wish Skeuomorphism was back in fashion.
I would say Skeuomorphism looked really cool back in the iOS 6 or ~OS X Snow Leopard era, but at the same time, the flat designs we have today, such as Material Design or iOS, look really clean and simple, making the experience much more elegant I'd say. It's just Windows that's overly simple in my opinion. I mean look at Material Design from Google - there's paper and shadows and depth used. It's a good balance between realistic and clean. Microsoft is, however, slowly correcting their mistakes with Fluent Design. I think Fluent is going to be the first modern UI language that's getting close again to the interesting designs rather than boring flat colors.
+XeZrunner Yeah, Material looks really nice (excluding the shitty RUclips update, I still use the old website). I've never seen Apple's since I don't care about Apple and likely won't in the foreseeable future. A lot of people just do flat design awfully and it looks like something a preschooler could make.
TheUndeadWolf I like flat design when it's used in a way that it makes the UI easier to understand and brings the focus to the important task. Also, I feel like animations also make more sense with the advanced shadow techniques used especially in Material Design and the Connected Animations in Fluent Design. With the older designs, not only would animation be harder or things would have to be more taxing on the hardware, but it would also bring some unnecessary elements to the UI that just make the app cluttered in the end. The problem with flat design today is that people just copy what they see in otherwise good flat UI, and apply it to their scenario, ignoring the feeling of empty space or meaningful control placement / animation in favor of using up to date design language. With Skeuomorphism, you couldn't really go that wrong, as unnecessary elements could be put anywhere as part of the design.
*At **13:05** Mum wonders what I wondered back in 2003 but with a live cam on the outside* *wall, showing what was really happening on the outside, just like a real window.*
These are awesome programs, I have been searching for a way to make my windows 10 desktop resemble windows 7 or vista, but none of the skins worked. I downloaded WindowBinds and now I am using the diamond skin, thank you!
One more thing, besides Windows Vista/7's transparency being my favorite, my favorite is Windows XP's silver theme. I don't really like the Luna Blue theme that much because of the yellowness mixed with the dark blue interface. I also despise the Olive Green theme. The silver theme is where it's at. It has a much more beautiful design and it looks futuristic and metallic, that's why I like it, and I think that the silver color in the theme overall is lovely.
The Silver Luna theme definitely looked more modern, contempt, and metallic than the default Blue Luna Theme. It kind of competed with the Mac themes better back then.
I like the fish, I did edit out a bit where I said "Let's keep the fish so we always remember the time we used DesktopX. Issue is the videos are about an hour unedited, so I try cut out as much unnecessary talking and stuff as I can.
16:00 Think 77°F is hot? Try living here in Southwest Florida where 77°F is considered cold because right now in the summer everyday is 90°F and I am dying down here!

I heard Stardock and immediately thought of their game Sins of a Solar Empire which I played a lot in the past. I didn't know they made software like this before.

Yea, great thing about OSFirstTimer is that you basically get ideas, software and operating systems presented to you so you can learn new things and explore things you haven't seen before.
Oh god windowblinds. I had this on my penguin 3 IBM thinkpad as well as rocketdock cos I wanted a Mac but couldn’t afford one. Slowed it right down, I still have it installed on that computer, though it hasn’t been booted up in years.

Jack Long Windows 10 is crap with every single point. The interface, the theme, the stability... just everything. Windows 7 is at least not bloated compared to the crappy Windows 10.

Acrylic design in Windows 10 brings back a lot of the transparency and blurring that is in the Aero theme.
