    Quite often we find ourselves in environments where leaders are working against each other instead of working together for the greater good of the organization. It boils down to
    "Just keeping your head under the radar and collect your paycheck"

    Someone who finally gets it. My motto was always that people don`t work FOR the manager but rather that the manager is working for their people. The job of the employee is to DO their jobs. The manager is there to support them by empowering them to make decisions, ensuring they have the right tools & training and especially that they are well. In every way.

      I work for a decently sized retailer of a specific segment of apparel. Company culture has shifted (at least within the region) towards results over people. Conversations are not about “how are you doing? What can I help with? What support can I give? What are you having success with? What solutions or ideas have you already tried or thought of?” And people definitely do not feel safe enough to be vulnerable about opportunities up front. Instead we get emails mostly when results are below expectations, less often when there is improvement or success. Only TOP performance is recognized or applauded. This has lead to me following along and my focus as a leader has also shifted to results driven as that is what Im being asked about. My team has crumbled, my confidence as a leader has eroded, the team has begun backbiting and gossiping about me and I'm basically on the verge of giving up on a 10 year long journey. This is the impact. I was MORE successful as a service based leader. My motto was "Take care of the people and let them take care of the business." I miss the old me and I want him back.

    LOVE is "emotional"
    For sure people are not towels and the leaders certainly don't have to wring them out to bring out the most out of them.Just give them their space and don't only accept their flaws but embrace them.
    Simon is phenomenal in expressing the most ABSTRACT of things in such a profound way that i can't even describe in words.

    This is the only way how a company functions long term. Loved the Four Seasons example with Noah! Trust is the THING - thank you for sharing, making sure as a leader to be aware of it. Often, this deep pure trust is felt when we are born into the world and it is the most important emotion we can give our children as a parent. Trust, Safe Space and belonging

    To me I think it's a pragmatic utopia. I like what Simon Sinek is coming up with here - forming teams that are emotionally engaging in their work and leadership that is profoundly about caring. Coming from a German background, I really see though that cultural aspects play in here too - love and feelings don't belong to a workplace in Germany, nevertheless, productivity is extremely high in my country - also due to excellent teamwork, not because members brought in their personal lives into the job surrounding or leaders caring in the first place, but because of the contrary: they know how to seperate the personal from the job life. It's not "fake". The emotional connection to the workplace can play a role, but distancing from work, from the teams or other out of my cultural background (Hofstede, Socialization, 6D Model), is simply the distancing and shutting the door to the work routine - which is healthy to do. The failures of leadership are in turn very good addressed - its not the teams failing in first place, its leaders not leading well and failing in intervening into employees (life) situations.

    Simon says:
    - the leadership environment will hugely impact the performance of their team
    - no trust = the team shows up and fake, lie and hide mistakes for fear of punishment
    - in a trusting team people admit mistakes and their need for help without any fear of retribution
    - leadership is not about being in charge. It is about taking care of those in your charge.
    - poor service is often due to team members being scared of breaking the rules.

    My favorite speech. Love it. What Simon is saying - it's an absolute true.
    But this is an utopia. That's unreal.
    Example. Had interview lately for VP sales role in one of Fortune 100 multibillion dollars giant. Those interviews for those types of positions are pretty straight forward: "All what you say about values, leadership, building trust, customer obsession, teamworking, making people to feel safe, go to market strategies is good, but we don't give a shit about it. What we care about - is how you'll grow sales +10% this year squeezing as much as you could from your team, like from the towels, and treating them like collateral damage. And even if you grow sales and hit your numbers - the expectations until the end of your tenure and until we fire you (and sooner or later we will fire you) will be the same. And if you won't grow sales - you are out to lunch with all your values and beliefs, because you are not a human, you are just piece of the puzzle, a raw material, which we'll use, abuse and throw into the garbage when your time comes".
    This is how I read all of these between the lines when I have interviews like this.
    And in your other speech, Simon, you said that we have million and one metrics to measure someone's performance and negligible to no metrics to measure someone's trustworthiness. You then said that you'd better have Medium performance and High Trust person versus High Performance and Low Trust. I agree with you. And I support your vision on 100%. But let me ask you: out of Fortune 100 list - how many leaders and organizations you've seen who really follow what you are envisioning?

    The success of every team is solely the responsibility of the leader. If the leader understands his or her role either as a manager, HOD, a team leader etc then they should be able to navigate through working with the team and working through the team. Identifying the strengths, weaknesses, methods, ideas, and trying to understand their understanding of their job functions will go a long way in building up a viable team. As a Leader you must be open, show empathy, be trustworthy and be supportive.

    I find that senior leaders struggle with this. They forget how they got to that level or got their position because of tenure and never had these skills. They don't seem natural or genuine when they try to connect with the larger team. Everyone wants quick results but that is only good in the short term. Slow and steady will win the race.

    Awareness and knowing the why is important. Most times we are socially driven amongst our peers to follow suit... ⁹/10 people dont want to be seen to be doing the right thing because of social pressure in the workplace. Say for instance, 4 out of 5 people wear a hard hat backwards, the 5th person is going to follow suit to not to be accepted even if they know its the wrong thing to do, unless they are prepared to lead by example.

    Trust also means assuming the best in people.
    When we find ourselves in leadership positions, we too often think that people need to be reminded to be on their best behavior e.g remember to give your 100%! Always ask for help when you need it!
    Assuming that you hired the right people, you shouldn't need to remind people to ask for help when needed or give something their full effort. To do so implies that you may have at one point doubted those you're leading - that you at one point may not have trusted them to ask for help when faced with a difficult task or give something their full effort.
    In short, if you have to tell those you lead to work hard, you've either hired the wrong people and therefore have had to create an environment in which such reminders are necessary or you simply don't trust the people who work with you.
    Both situations will require some self-reflection to remedy.

      It's impossible to love all mankind with "PERSONAL" love. Christ was speaking of Impersonal love for one another. PERSONAL love for God the Father motivates Impersonal love for ALL MANKIND even the unlovable. Impersonal love emphasis the subject (me) the one doing the loving. Regardless who they are or what they've done based on my own honor and integrity I treat all with tolerance forgiveness courtesy sensitivity thoughtfulness kindness etc... that is what Christ meant by love one another and through practicing this Unbelievers can see Christ bring formed in you.

    The team decides on salary and bonuses through periodic team review. The ‘leader’ does not necessarily makes the highest income.
    Various roles within a team suit different personality types regardless of age and ‘experience’. Guru types regardless of skill domain are worth multiples of the team ‘average’ income.
    The team reviews, decided and knows on what each other is earning. This really is the crack cocaine of empowered teams and high performance.

    I totally agree with the message here. The one thing that struck me though was the United Airlines example where Simon spoke up for a passenger trying to board early, and in that instance it's equally possible that the gate agent used the reason for doing what they did as an excuse to minimise potential complaints and further issues. I'm not saying it was definitely the case, just a possible reason

    Noa example is just mind-blowing. If Noa presents in that other hotel with not so supportive management, as he presents in Four Seasons Hotel, Noa could be even sanctioned for his customer service style. I can feel this on a very personal level. I do not adjust to the environment and leaders, I am myself and act according to my values. You can have a good guess, I did not stay long in not supportive and trusting environments. Now, as a leader, I want to build this environment. Thank you!!

    During an intense meeting with my manager and the other assistant manager, in which I was trying to advocate for and defend my team's performance and explain the role that trust of management plays in a team's performance, the other assistant manager flipped it on me (as if I hadn't been the one to bring up the lack of trust that permeates the entire establishment) they said my team was under performing because they don't trust me and that the way they gained the teams trust was by being the best at everything. I am still trying to see how that is a trust building practice. While I do see the value in a team seeing the tasks performed in their most efficient and expedient capacities and the importance that a team trusts the leader's competence at tasks they are training other's for, in this context, the other AM's performance is weaponized against people. They are constantly comparing the time it takes them to the time it takes the team members suggesting that they are falling short, all but one of which have been there for less than a year.

    I love your videos, I believe that you can feel it deep inside when someone is speaking truth. I am a father of three and a choir teacher and I believe that your lectures on leadership have helped both professionally and personally. Two questions, First is there any way that you could do one of your lectures specifically geared towared teachers. Teaching is after all mostly leadership. Second, I think I have heard you speak to this before but what can you do to help others, leaders and colleagues become interested in leadership training.

      "Hello Sir/Ma,
      We appreciate the need to board earlier. And, we would see to it, that you do.
      Meanwhile, you may have to step aside, while we go through the batch of earlier arrivals so as not to compromise company's policy.

    For ANY OF THIS TO WORK you must get management to think of PEOPLE as MORE IMPORTANT than MONEY!! [IMHO that a non-starter...won't happen]
