I have taught in 5 different South African schools over the last 2 decades and the classes of the last decade host Nelson Mandela's dream of unity through diversity and education changing the country, it's a slow process, but it is happening in places, and I hope that spreads
One of the best conversations I've had the joy of watching. When two curious minds come together and explain their thoughts with clear examples, on important topics, everyone has the opportunity to reflect. Thank you Simon and Trevor
This is truly marvelous, buoyant, deep 😂, philosophical, retrospective and current. Thank you for your sharp observations and get together again soon!! 🙏🏻
These two are brothers from another mother, it was so nice to listen to. Much of this conversation has overlap with the book Bowling Alone, which was a warning about how distant we've generally become from one another (and was also used as inspiration to capitalize on loneliness for destructive purposes.)
Trevor's right about small talk. It is necessary for us to find common ground in order for us to share a bond that allows us to attack a problem or a situation or an idea together. That's why you can get a group of incredibly diverse people who have one similar interests and they can form bonds and lifelong relationships across gender and age and class and any other division you can dream of.
My face and reaction to this entire conversation : 51:14 Thank you Simon Sinek and Trevor Noah for this incredible conversation. The world as a whole needs more of this. Small talk, big talk it doesn't matter ..what matters is good, meaningful and authentic talk. ❤
Thanks for sharing this! I really relate to what Simon Sinek and Trevor Noah said about small talk and assumptions. As a German, I've often been wrongly assumed to be a Nazi, which couldn’t be further from the truth. I once wrote about a modern interpretation of a Wagner piece for Los Angeles Times, where an opera singer in a wheelchair was pushed from downtown LA to the Pacific Ocean. Despite this, some still label me a neo-Nazi. It’s scary how quickly people make assumptions-German = Nazis, Wagner = Nazis. They don’t see that the Wagner opera didn’t even sound like Wagner’s, nor do they want to see the wheelchair or consider the history of 300,000 disabled people sent to the gas chambers. I spent four days pushing that wheelchair along Sunset Boulevard. Unbelievable. Me? No Nazi. Me? I hate Nazis! My mom was a great role model-she took care of my brother with disabilities and didn’t send him to an institution. He wouldn’t have been able to tell us if they had abused him there. It’s a tough world when you’re discriminated against for both your background and for doing the right thing. Give a voice to the voiceless. Wishing you all Happy Holidays!
Community Place: One of the things I loved when I lived in Austin was their Sunday night Symphony on the Lawn (that's what I called it - it has another official name.) Every Sunday people would gather on the lawn in-front of the theatre - along the hill on the lake to listen to parts of the symphony (and sometimes the whole orchestra) come together for a free outdoor musical.
Wow, you too wonderful men… Thank you so much for this awesome conversation. I didn’t want it to end either. The world needs more of this ♥️🙏♥️ Much love from Denmark
Small talk has value but only as a means to gently lead into the big talk (which I define as anything we’re truly passionate about - not necessarily huge philosophical stuff). But the problem with large group conversations is that they rarely lend themselves to big talk, so I pretty much live for small groups or one-on-one conversations like the relationship you two have
You guys together are absolutely AWESOME! I love, love, love watching you interact with each other. I learn so much from your conversations! Neither guy has to be right or IS right. You fully are able to disagree with each other, and you don’t stay there. You think and sometimes struggle with where the disagreement is, honing it from all directions, until you BOTH see the brilliance of where you’ve gotten to. Boom …..agreement. It is magical listening to you. It isn’t often that I see this kind of transparency rooted in such deep authenticity anywhere, actually, rooted in a friendship so valued. Thank you for giving all of us this gorgeous experience. It changes me because I am able to take in the sessions with a wide open heart because an open heart is so clearly part of your intention. You are expressing and modeling the new energy that is flowing onto our planet presently. Such a joy to SEE it on a public screen and to see it coming from two truly beautiful masculine beings. “When you make it GOOD, people will find it”. What you are doing together on podcasts is really, really GOOD. I’ll be watching for you. 🩷♥️💜🙏💚🩵💙
Interesting idea about constraints, love it. Building on that idea... One constraint that we all share is that we all grow old and die. Americans are consumed with the task of getting rid of that constraint... Plastic surgery, negative aging, etc. Would we get along better if we did a better job of recognizing and accepting that constraint?
Trevor’s sharp intellect, wit, and ability to articulate complex ideas with clarity and relatability are unmatched. His perspective on life, culture, and human behavior is both insightful and thought provoking!
Small talk is crucial in some tough situations. Once established, it can move sentiment toward, "It's not you and I against each other, rather it's you and I against the problem.
20:50 , it makes sense also when you look from the wealthy side as well , the have gots have more to share but wayy more to loose and less to gain from poorer neighbors, they can buy themselves out of problems , better food , a nanny to get some sleep , a plumber instead of an uncle Joe that would help you ...
Hey Trevor, I lived in a Block of Flats in Durban, and all you mention about your area of growing up happens in a block of Flats too 😂 I met fascinating neighbours of all ethnicities and that's post apartheid.... So SA is more diverse now from my side... Yes, class division is a global thing... Agreed on the results
Ok, so hear me out. It is the constraint that is actually what is polarizing us as a society at the moment. Why do I say this? The loudest voices on both the left and the right come from those with the most extreme points of view. One of the unintended consequences of social media is that the algorithms reward the extremist point of view (probably because it gets the most engagement) because it elicits the highest emotional responses. Because we are inundated with messaging from the most extreme voices on the left and the most extreme voices on the right, those become effectively our constraints. And we choose one over the other not because we like what they have to say but because we don’t like what they have to say. So, the divisiveness comes from the fact that we are forced the choose based on what we hate more. Although, I agree with Trevor’s point about constraints forcing us to accept more easily what we don’t like because we are stuck with it so our best course of action is to get over it, ironically, I believe what is dividing us at the moment would be that the perceived choice that we have with regards to our politics and our belief systems are only between the two most extreme points of view. And in the extremes, it’s harder to find common ground.
I love it when someone talks about something and you feel connected to them as "people who do that thing too". Like Simon, I am a surface abuser, and its comforting to know others like me exist 😂
Wow, there are topic threads here that I hear overlap with the Doctor Mike and Dr Mike podcast conversation from Doctor Mike’s “The Checkup”, which I just watched a few days ago, particularly the need for struggle/constraint for society to truly function, and now I’d love to see these 4 sit down and talk about stuff. Though I’d be tempted to say, I want them all to talk about something mundane, because these two separate conversations are so deep, I’m a bit overwhelmed 😅
One of the best hours spent in my life and surely better than most content nowadays. It has been a while that I went "wow that's a great way to think about something". The constraint-part was especially genius. I truly hope there are gonna be more conversations between those two great minds.
I love these two guys. They're both so inspiring in their insightful views on the world. We should clone them so more people like them are around us. ❤
Loved the conversation and love the both of you!!!! You make conversation that is deep, relatable and easy to understand for people like me like me that aren’t as intelligent!!!!! Thank you
I have friends who don't enjoy reading and i've found with most of them that they enjoy music and audiobooks a lot more than those who do. So now i'm curious. Simon, do you listen to audiobooks? Also, I think we all agree that vigilante justice is not okay, but many of us feel like all other forms of justice are being destroyed by the power inequality in this country.
Maybe "commitment" is the antidote to swimming aimlessly in too much choice. All these brilliant podcast conversations then back home alone. Your kids would give you lots of grounding and grass to trim together and dogs to play with etc etc Trevor 🙂
Simon thinks he knows Trevor but keep bumping to differences and yet he does not admit just try to re-tweak his words to fit.. I love how Trevor just being awesome himself.. Love the discussion thought.. Thanks
I'm not listening and watching because I thought it would be funny, if it's any consolation. I loved especially the part about the ethical fading topic, which is something that keeps me awake at night. In the company where I'm working (still) this behaviour has happened all the time, and I have even been asked by the CEO of the company, to smuggle a couple of tech products our company utilizes, to neighbor countries because it was what "needed to be done", and he actually told me "it's part of your job". And I did it, knowing fully I was doing something illegal that worst case scenario, would represent a fine, and economical sanction of some type and that would be it. But morally and ethically it is something that has stucked with me, and that I haven't been able to overcome, and I very much still harshly resent my boss for it. As I'm typing these sentences I'm realizing I need to get out of this company, no matter the fear of losing economical stability or any other thing... this is not the place I want to work.
I was certainly not forced to watch and listen to this for an hour. And possibly for another hour. Then a year's worth of it. But hey, constraints. After all, limitations are the tunnel that channel excellence. Truly 2 of the most brilliant minds of this generation of mankind. And such a pleasure to listen to.
Simon and Trevor, Could you please bring all the millionaires together in this world to help and support the less fortunate people and get rid off poverty and suffering from the world.
I think the term that summarizes what the insurance companies etc are doing to the public is institutional deviance. Specifically that there is a collective awareness of the consequences of actions but alternatives are chosen for the (monetary) benefit of the few at the expense of those in need of service and care.
Amazing flow of ideas. 2 brilliant minds! When we talk about ethical fading, is there a rationalization that is acceptable? Is it possible nowadays to put constraints to increase the sense of community? How can we create a community where members of the community chooses to stay together while they have the choice to relocate somewhere else? I believe a community is group of people having similar norms and values that choose to live together. Can we teach to live together while respecting differences, can we teach our societal values and norms to our children to create a sense of community ? Simon and Trevor, thank you for this amazing podcast.
go to Disney and stay there. Everyone you meet, no matter the class, will treat you the same because they are happy and on vacation. Those same people meet in the real world would not treat you the same way because they are too busy with life and making a living. I have seen this time and time again. It doesn't have to do with bad things always. It has to do with time, attitude, and the need to let go. A Guild in WoW use to be like this too.
Thanks for the forecast! I have a quick question: I have a SafePal wallet with USDT, and I have the seed phrase. (alarm fetch churn bridge exercise tape speak race clerk couch crater letter). How should I go about transferring them to Binance?
To me the western world seems largely morally bankrupt because of our obsession with wealth and wealth as power. Making money has become our moral imperative, even if it's in our behaviour and not yet completely in our words. Morality as we knew it has become undesirable, as it's often seen only as a flex of superiority, and "good" is not something we want to give away for free. Even when we have "ethical" companies now they are still in the pursuit of profit as money determines relative existence, power and therefore impact and influence. We are still allowed to say we are good people, but noone really cares if you are. There's no moral high ground anymore, no value in being more virtuous than another, and no reward for being good. The world is at a time where it is revelling in its cruelty, its inequality, its choice to exclude, and as you point out, the privilege to do so unconstrained.
My appeal to every Muslim, my brother or sister, the owner of the channel, I know that it is not my right to comment on your channel, but God is my witness that our circumstances are harsh and forced me to do this. Please forgive me. My brother, there is still a brotherhood of faith. I asked you for a bag of flour. My brother, we women cannot go out among men. There is still a woman with you. My brother, God has honored you. You are men. We are women. We cannot go out or work like you. My brother, where is the brotherhood of faith in your hearts? We are women. There is no brotherhood, no mercy, no compassion, no humanity. And give good tidings to the patient. It is the greatest hope while waiting for what we want. '''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''' How many times I called and talked and tried hard, but no one responded. Oh man, we are with you. My mother ordered us food from the restaurant. More and today. My mother left. Crying. She said, Why are you crying, my mother? She said, My daughter, I ask.God, that I may be honored by death. She said, Why, my mother. She cursed us. She said, "My daughter, today the restaurant owner insulted me. I said, 'Why?' I said, 'How can I be better than people?' I ask God, my daughter. May God gather me. With death alone, a gathering that is better than this humiliation and this humiliation. It is true. I am saying this. It diminishes my value and respect. But, man. I swear to God that I did not say this. I kiss your boots. I am so hungry that my conscience no longer allows me to let you go and ask us for food. I kiss your boots, man, and I ask you by God Almighty and in the Book of God, man, I kiss your boots, man. He has caused us harm, my brother, so that we can buy a kilo of flour and pay the rent. My brother, have mercy on us. He who is in the show will have mercy on you, He who is in the sky. My brother, this is my WhatsApp number: 00967772168484. Whoever can help us, message me on WhatsApp. We will send him the full name. He will transfer us as much as he can. May Allah reward you. Allah knows that my family and I, our house rent is 20 thousand Yemeni riyalsper month, and now we owe 60 thousand for 3 months. The owner of the house is one of those people who do not have mercy. By Allah, my brother, he comes every day and humiliates us and talks about us and wants to throw us out of the house and into the street because we were unable to pay him the rent. We will have until the end of the week, and if we pay him, he will swear by Allah that he will throw us out into the street without mercy. See my situation for yourselves. I ask you by Allah, the Living, the Eternal, to help me. By Allah, the Almighty, even at night we cannot sleep from fear. We do not have mattresses or blankets to warm ourselves from the cold. Everything is flooded from the rain, and we have no one but Allah and then you. My brothers, I kiss your boots, don’t turn me away empty-handed. Help us with whatever you can. Did they just start with big talk about small talk?? 🤣🤣🤣 I so love these two
Trevor and Simon! Wow! What a great pair to listen to ❤
This was such a great conversation! I'm sharing this with friends.
This bromance… I’m here for it and I want more!!! 🥰🥰🥰
Ok. The world doesn’t need any more podcasts… but… if the two of you made a podcast I would listen.

Such a great conversation. Please do more.
The world needs people who are good at diplomacy in politics, in general life the talent of diplomacy is necessary.

Thank you Simon Sinek and Trevor Noah for this incredible conversation. The world as a whole needs more of this. Small talk, big talk it doesn't matter ..what matters is good, meaningful and authentic talk.

I keep hearing in every scenario the paradox of choice
Amazing conversation. Trevor, amazing guy!

Wow, you too wonderful men… Thank you so much for this awesome conversation. I didn’t want it to end either. The world needs more of this ♥️🙏♥️ Much love from Denmark
You guys are two of my favorite people in the world. Please keep getting together and filming it for us.
Yes! Yes! Yes! They both exude excellence as being the best human we can be.

Such great insight. Thank you.
Brilliant conversation
Simon! I've often thought I need to eliminate every horizontal surface in my environments. It's good to know I'm not alone.
Interesting idea about constraints, love it. Building on that idea... One constraint that we all share is that we all grow old and die. Americans are consumed with the task of getting rid of that constraint... Very good!
Restraint is the key.

Love from Srilanka ❤
I'm not ready for this... too much to digest... but I'm still hungry... need more from you guys

Would be great to see Rich Roll on the shortlist!
You guys should do this more often! 🙌
great conversation
I want a second episode!!!!
1st timer. I admire thinkers, too. ❤

My brain hurts because the conversation was that good 😂

Is it acceptable to you that we live in this place? We are girls and we have no one. Our father died in a car accident. Consider us your daughters and your honor, and help me with whatever you can. May God reward you with good =>[[}>] ^][;&&&//&..,~~~♡♡~~~♡~~♡~•~•••••~•(・|.}]◤)~♡~♡~;l.i.i.i¡¡.i.i.l.ii||`،-.»◇◇~~،،،.،،،،،،-,|............😢.....
