  • This is one of the greatest Animated film I have ever seen. A wonderful and inspiring adaptation of Earnest Hemingway's story of the same title. Aleksandr Petrov, the one man Army behind this classic adaptation, has achieved so many well deserved prestigious awards for this once in a life time movie that can be made.
The film won many awards, including the Academy Award for Animated Short Film. Work on the film took place in Montreal over a period of two and a half years and was funded by an assortment of Canadian, Russian and Japanese companies.

Amazing that it was hand painted in pastels on glass. Over 29,000 individual paintings.
    Love and dedication = Brilliance.

That is amazing, but I wonder what the framerate is, since one painting does not produce one frame (if that were the case it would be animated on 1's and there would be paintings to spare, if it is 29000 paintings and it lasts 19min and 40 sec.)

It's so beautiful the way this story is portrayed in this film. Santiago has a certain soul to him that's hard to fully describe. He seems to feel like a defeated man, but he also shows an enduring, patient strength. When Santiago notices the big fish tugging on his fishing line, it feels as if he has woken up from a long hibernation for one last fight.

I literally had just read this short book in one sitting before typing in the title on Google to learn more about the story and see if there was anything I missed. It was a powerful story and the end when the other fishermen commented on the size of the fish made me tear up for some reason. My only criticism of this stunning animated film is that it cannot convey that length of time and pain the old man went through to get that magnificent fish. I also missed the men-of-war comments. That said, I applaud this beautiful piece of work.

    • @burninglory2

S Vota I just read the book and then stumbled upon this animated film. I felt the same that though the film is really well made but it does little in capturing the hardships faced by the old man during those days he was missing, how many times he thought of letting the fish go, how he had no strength due to hunger and how his left hand went numb. Now i know why reading a book and watching a film based on the book is very different. I have just started reading and really loved the book.

    00:02:36
00:02:39 When I was your age
    I was before the mast
    00:02:42
00:02:42 on a square rigged ship
    that ran to Africa.
    00:02:45
00:02:46 I have seen lions on the beaches
    in the evening.
    00:02:49
00:02:49 Yeah, I know. You told me.
    00:02:52
00:02:55 Tomorrow is going to be
a good day with this current.
    00:02:58
00:02:59 Where are you going to go ?
    00:03:00
00:03:00 Far out to come in
    when the wind shifts.
    00:03:04
00:03:08 Santiago, how old was I
when you first took me in a boat ?
    00:03:12
00:03:13 Five and you nearly were killed
    00:03:16
00:03:16 when I brought the fish
    in too green.
    00:03:18
    00:03:20 And he nearly
    tore the boat to pieces.
    00:03:22
    00:03:24 Can you remember ?
    00:03:25
    00:03:25 I remember everything
from when we first went together.

    00:03:56 Good luck, old man.

    00:04:38 He's got something.
    00:04:41
00:05:15 Ah ! There you are, little lad.
    00:05:17
    00:05:24 You'll make a beautiful bait.
    00:05:25
00:05:29 There might be a big fish
    around this school.
    00:05:32
00:05:34 It has to be swimming nearby.
    00:05:37
    00:05:47 Yes... yes !
    There it is.
    00:05:51
00:05:53 I cannot lose this chance.
    00:05:55
    00:05:56 This far out,
he must be huge in this month.
    00:06:00
    00:06:03 Eat it !
    00:06:04
00:06:05 Come on, fish... eat it !
    00:06:07
    00:06:12 He will take it.
    00:06:14
00:06:14 God help him to take it.
    00:06:17
    00:06:20 Come up easy...
    00:06:22
00:06:23 and let me put the harpoon
    into you.
    00:06:26
    00:06:26 Are you ready ?
    00:06:28
    00:06:29 Now !
    00:06:30
    00:06:49 What's that ?
    00:06:50
    00:06:52 My God ! What a weight !
    00:06:54
00:07:02 I am being towed by the fish.
    00:07:04
    00:09:16 He can't be that big !
    00:09:19
00:09:53 I hope he doesn't know there is
only one man against him... an old man.
    00:09:58
    00:10:00 I must convince him
    of my strength.
    00:10:02
    00:10:03 I convinced everybody else,
that time in the tavern in Casablanca...
    00:10:08
00:10:08 when I played the hand game
    with that great black
    00:10:11
00:10:11 who was the strongest man
    on the docks.
    00:10:13
00:10:15 We had gone one day and one night
    facing one another.
    00:10:19
00:10:20 Our forearms were straight up
    and our hands gripped tight.
    00:10:23
00:10:24 We were trying to force
each other's hand down on the table.
    00:10:27
    00:10:32 There was much betting
    00:10:34
00:10:35 and people went in and out
    of the room
    00:10:38
    00:10:39 under the kerosene lamps.
    00:10:41
00:10:42 Eleven hours and still counting.
    00:10:44
00:10:48 They changed the referees every four hours
so that the referees could sleep.
    00:10:53
    00:11:01 Many of the bettors
    had asked for a draw
    00:11:04
00:11:04 because they had to go to work
on the docks loading sacks of sugar.
    00:11:07
    00:11:09 Otherwise everyone would have
wanted it to go to a finish.
    00:11:13
    00:11:30 Yes Santiago !
    Come on !
    00:11:33
00:11:33 You can do it !
    00:11:35
    00:11:35 Go on !
    Kill him down !
    00:11:37
    00:11:40 - Barkeep !
    - For you, young man !
    00:11:42
    00:11:42 We have a winner.
    00:11:44
    00:11:45 The match had started
    on a Sunday morning
    00:11:48
00:11:50 and ended on a Monday morning.
    00:11:52
00:11:53 For a long time after that
everyone had called me The Champion.
    00:11:58
    00:12:03 Man is not much
beside the great birds and beasts.
    00:12:07
00:12:07 But they are not as intelligent
    as we who kill them.
    00:12:10
00:12:11 They are more noble and more able.
    00:12:14
00:12:15 I would rather be that beast down there
in the darkness of the sea.
    00:12:20
00:12:33 The fish is my brother
    00:12:35
00:12:36 but I must kill him.
    00:12:38
00:12:47 I am glad we do not have
    to kill the stars.
    00:12:50
    00:12:52 Imagine if each day
a man must try to kill the moon.
    00:12:55
    00:12:56 The moon runs away.
    00:12:57
00:12:59 But imagine if a man each day
should have to try to kill the sun...
    00:13:03
    00:13:04 We were born lucky.
    00:13:05
00:13:06 It is enough to live on the sea
    and kill our true brothers.
    00:13:10
    00:13:11 I have never seen
or heard of such a fish.
    00:13:16
00:13:16 And now, we are joined together.
    00:13:20
    00:13:59 Watch out, Santiago !
    00:14:02
00:14:42 I will stay with you
until I am dead, fish !
    00:14:46
00:14:49 Oh God, my hand !
    00:14:51
00:15:16 God help me endure !
    00:15:21
00:16:03 I wish the boy was here.
    00:16:05
00:16:07 He will be proud of me.
    00:16:09
    00:16:09 I am a tired old man
    00:16:11
    00:16:12 but I have done it !
    00:16:15
00:16:30 It was too good to last...
    00:16:33
    00:16:34 Sharks !
    00:16:35
    00:17:39 I should not
have gone out so far, fish.
    00:17:42
    00:17:44 I'm sorry, fish.
    00:17:46
    00:18:35 Don't sit up !
    00:18:37
    00:18:39 Drink this.

    00:18:46
    00:18:46 No. Truly.
    It was afterwards.
    00:18:49
00:18:51 - Did they search for me ?

This is really the apex of animation from a visual standpoint. I think more expressive and cartoony disney characters would be required but I see no reason why a feature production couldn't be made with the glorious and lush backgrounds that we see in this film.

That's an interesting point I was thinking about it the other day. Snow White is the one film where you are completely bought into the illusion and drift into another world. As in when you see the queen you are actually shitting yourself in a way in which you aren't in the others.

This is Hemingway made into paintings on glass. That’s how they made this absolutely inspirational short film: paintings on glass. It should win every award there is. For perfect accuracy and portrayal of the late 19th and early 20th centuries for one. And then just the colors themselves were inspired as can possibly be. A movie made out of paintings. Majestic to behold. So much do I love this book that I will attempt to paint a few scenes myself. I’m a painter among other things. So that’s what I do. All I know is it’s a shame Hemingway destroyed himself. Very foolish considering his understanding. Grievous even. I will paint this lasting beauty nevertheless. Lord willing that is. Amen 🙏
