Hmm try watching Ghibli movies by Hayao Miyazaki (Spirited away, Howl's moving castle, etc) and Yuki Midorikawa's Hotarubi no Mori E, as well as Makoto Shinkai's Your Name and 5 centimeters pere second although these are movies
to anyone confused about the story, the robot is having flash backs to the time spent with the little girl's grandmother (she's in the red rain coat as a young girl, and if you keep watching towards the very end she shows up again wearing it) that became his friend in the same fashion until she had to move away. years later, her granddaughter comes to rescue him from his loneliness the same way her grandmother had, but time's been harsh on him (and the town) so he can't keep up anymore and instead falls apart since he's been alone so long. however, if you keep watching, the girl tells her grandmother, and this time they both come back for him in the end so he won't be alone and forgotten anymore.
Also the old woman in the begining of the video (wearing yellow) is the graddaughter. So the opening scene is actually set decades after the ending of the short
This is obvious, but... why there´s robot on the story? Why the robots lives right after the alley normally? Why the city rains unstoply? Why she fall on a hole, saw many wrecked robots, was saved from being drowned and started to hapilly jump as if it was a normal situation? So many questions, so little time. Confused, but have beautful images.
The first time I saw this, an overwhelming amount of loneliness enveloped me. But the loneliness was bittersweet, and filled with nostalgia: past friends, past schools, past paths, past landscapes. And I've realized that all of them were as beautiful as can be. Then I realized that the essence of loneliness is pure and filled with grace. It's the same feeling I got during Sen to Chihiro's Sixth Station scene.
Coffee Creamer You should be sorry. All that wasted space is very annoying to those of us who were courteous enough to want to see what you had to say.
I believe this is the best animated short I have seen. The animation itself was wonderful. It wasn't jerky, and the movement was great. (I love how the little girl runs. It's the cutest thing.) I like the characters, too. And the story itself is such a lovely, heartwarming story. The music was so simple but fit with everything. Watching this made me feel calmer and even happier. I could probably watch it over and over if time allowed.
Juliet W. I always imagine the kid with the yellow raincoat is six in the game little nightmares, because they are the same as wearing a yellow raincoat: 3
But... but... They didn't fix him? D: The whole thing is beautiful to the core, but I think the best part is the music and the constant sound of rain. c: Also, dayum that awesome mirror effect on the wet ground!
City seems like abandoned by most people long time ago, so here hard to find engineer, and many resources are turned to trash... Robot seems like very old, so for sure it's hard to repair its body, if it fell apart so much... But its head can work (or live?) independently of body, so why not to take it apart?
An archetypal example of an animated short that doesn't need to say anything in order to convey the story: a case of "show, don't tell" used exceptionally effectively by the creator. Kudos to you, sir.
As high the flow that drown the land, Lost between the days of man. Yet one would stay and nevermore To keep remind of light before. Warm the sun and blaze the street, Burn in heart by friend it meet. Yet here it lay, metal and brown, Former light of the once rain town.
This is beautiful. What this means to me is that if you lose something important, a friend or a pet or a family member, you still have their memories. In the first scene with the old lady, she is wearing a yellow jacket. The little girl in the rain also wears a yellow jacket. The flower pot is really her robot's head. Even though he can't move or have fun with her anymore, the memories of when they did are still there for the old lady. And she keeps his head to remember more easily. Even if something bad happens and you lose something important, it's okay because you'll always have the memories of them.
Like what everybody says, it invokes a profound feeling of nostalgia. The art, the music, or the ambient sound that the rain made when it was trickling down. It somehow awakened a long, forgotten distant memory. Like when I'd go for a walk at dawn back then and the scenery would look quite sad and somber; and everything is seemingly still and quiet except for the rain. This animation is indeed exceptional. The use of contrast was so beautiful!
This makes me feel empty inside...I felt nothing but pain when I watched this... But this is an amazing piece of work. It reaches out to all people of all languages. There is no language barrier in this short film.
So the old woman at the end of the video was the liltle girl at 5:24 right? They both wore red raincoat and I think that that tall "man" had been waiting for her for so long that he turned rust. This video is so adorable, beautiful, amazing and touching. Thank you so much!
Did you notice the old woman´s hair in the begining and the one wearing the RED raincoat at the end? I think the old women at the end is really the girl who left. but!! the old women at the begining is the little girl with the yellow-green raincoat who grew older.
The coolest thing about this animation was the fact that since it has no talking it transcends all countries and cultures and allows everyone to understand.
Thank you for this... it's so soothing and breathtaking... dilapidated buildings have never looked so beautiful... the contrast between the past and present atmosphere is very interesting and the ceaseless rain submerging the town is so metaphorical... and the way that the granddaughter's adventure led to the robot being reunited with the grandma after being left behind for so many years is so heartwarming...

It's funny to think that the beginning was the ending. I immediately went back and rewatched it with full understanding. Now the girl in the olive coat is an old lady, caring for the robot. What a story of companionship.... I was really moved. The silence in this was golden
Oh, I get it. The girl in the little red jacket is the grandmother of the girl in the little yellow/green jacket. The robot/tin man had flashbacks of when he was young and silver playing with the grandmother, but she moved away. Now, he's rusty and broke while playing with the grandmother. But he got to meet the girl he used to play with again. :)
The mood, setting, characters, and even music feels like something you would see in a Miyuzaki film. This animation came out very well, and has inspired me to keep practicing my arts. I hope you continue to create art like this, if not, greater.

This is beautiful. I started crying when the grandmother caressed the robot head. She has got to be the girl he was playing with in the past before the rain started.
Wow the attention to the sound design was amazing as well...the clips they used for the little girl's rainboots in the rain added so much to her lovely, cute character
It feels especially good when sound of the rain in the animation assonates with the same sound by my window. Very touching and atmospheric work, especially I love the color of the rain, the streets, the buildings...
I've probably watched this film a dozen times over the past few years. The animation, the story-telling, the piano along with the transcendental pouring of rain...one hell of a combination. It's piece of art that actually stays with you.
