Based on a true story. These men escape in a foreign land, finding food would have been a struggle, especially when many of our wildlife that would offer a good hearty meal, are active at night. The story of "Michael Buckley" who was an escaped prisoner, survived for 18yrs with the Indigenous nations of the now "Geelong" region.
William Buckley escaped in 1803 a convict lived with aboriginals for 32 years Geelong district. Alexander Pearce a lone survivor, escaped with 7 other convicts in 1822 from prison at Sarah Island Tasmania. Transcript of his confession still exists, this film is based is on that transcript.
Van Diemens land (Tasmania) Based on a true story about escaped convicts forced to eat the weakest. Not a fast paced movie but a glimpse into what humans are capable of doing to each other to survive. I've watched it a few times and fully recommend it
This happened in Australia quite a while ago. Trust me you wouldn't want to live back then. Most people died miserably well before they were 50 and life was very hard.
The brutal story of how eight penal convicts abandoned a perfectly good boat and set off into the wilds of Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania off the southeast coast of Australia). At worst two would have died taking the boat. The soldiers had smoothbore flintlock muskets. They could have overwhelmed the two guards and rowed away. Instead they chose the path of suffering and pain and entered the realm of shadow and flame.
It's funny reading the comments, even now few people believe this actually happened. The survivor was eventually recaptured in Hobart. He confessed to what happened but the authorities couldn't believe him. Wracked by remorse and wanting to be punished, he convinced another prisoner to escape with him again. He promptly killed the other man, sat around until he was again recaptured and this time he was hung for murder. The film is called Van Diemen's Land. It is about prisoners in Macquarie Harbour. It was so horrible they made murder pacts with each other. First person to get the chance, murders the other, they are then hung, suicide was not an option.

I do all the time. Your, as a group, assessments of movies has always been spot on. I’ve gone ahead and watched bad review movies anyway but ended up wishing I hadn’t waisted my time. Your motto should be “We watch them so you don’t have to”.
Based on true story Alexander Pearce Irish (1790-1824) in brutally cold Tasmania (the Van Diemens Land) penal colony, half starved, lost, tried to escape they did NOT know how to trap & what vegetation was edible, you can die an awful death, most did NOT know how to swim. Enjoy the movie if you understand the brutality of the times, not knowing what we know now.
Disappointing ang movie na to. Dahil sa gutom? May mga Sapa na pwedi nila pagkunan ng pagkain ,maging mga pako o fern ay edible din yan na pagkain. Mabuti sana kung wala silang apoy, maintindihan ko pa.
What the human mind goes through in a fight for survival is a constant battle of the will to survive and one's conscience of what they're willing to do. In a dire situation, people have resorted to the most heinous acts to survive whereas others would rather die than endure the worst. If a person is able to shut off their conscience, the guilt and accountability are removed and they can commit acts of the very worst kind, but fortunately, not all can or will let themselves do that and instead will go to great lengths to find a resolve without destroying their spirit/soul. "BUT" Even the strongest can cave to group pressure because when more than one person commits the horrific acts the guilt seems to be spread through the group minimizing it as if it gives permission to partake in the acts for survival.
That's the materialist's pragmatism. There is no soul , no heaven , no hell, no purpose, no meaning, pitiless mercy. No objective morality. Just this, death and extinction. Atheism at its best.
Idiots, who can’t make weapons make fish traps hunt trap small game or make shelter or follow a fucking River going downward. Men aren’t this stupid in the city now how could they be that long ago and not to far removed from literally living off the land. They didn’t see any familiar plant that were edible. Damn.
