you gotta check out the live studio 'Of Matter' by Tesseract. Daniel Tompkins (their original, and current singer) rejoined the band after a short hiatus in which they recruited the help of a singer named Ashe O' Hara. Ashe did an amazing job in studio setting, and their album 'Altered State' is their best work (in my opinion). Would be a nice contrast, and the live in Sphere Studio recording of 'Of Matter' is quite amazing. Thanks for checking out TesseracT, one of my favorite bands!
And in that time when Daniel left, he joined Skyharbor which is an amazing prog band. Guiding lights being my favorite album from them, Daniel has such a unique voice and the rest of the members are very talented as well.
While I personally prefer Dan as a singer and i think I like individual songs from after Altered State more, I agree that as a whole, Altered State is just a fantastic album, probably my favorite entire album.
I was one of the ones who annoyed you with Tesseract. Thanks for the content!! What you say about the space, you are totally right! Tesseract doesn't have commonly used structures. It seems they have verses and choruses but they only repeat once. Their songs are a trip. You should watch their live recording of Phoenix live in the studio.
My favorite from TesseracT is the 3 "Of Matter" songs. Check it out if you want :) Also great video again. You have become one of my favorite youtubers for song breakdowns already
Someone probably already said this but Tesseract produce and engineer their own stuff. Its mostly their guitarist Acle that writes and produces it all. Cool reaction and happy you liked it. Tesseract are a fun band to get into, you're gonna love'em.
Acle (lead guitar player) is a wizard at producing for sure. Saves a lot of money but yeah he is meticulous and doesn't want anything but perfection. Similar to John Petrucci of Dream Theater who also does their production for the band in their new band only studio
Holy shit you're doing Tesseract too now?! Someone's just listing my playlists to you at this point. Tool, Snarky Puppy, Nightwish, Periphery, now this...
this is also just a killer track on an amazing album, you could react to the rest of this album and I think you would be pleasantly surprised with some nice grooves.
Don’t forget friends, if there’s a particular song you want to hear, copy the RUclips link and paste into your comment here. Give this guy a break and save him from having to go find these tunes on his own!
@@thewhorocks515 since we are talking about Opeth yo must roll a dice to pick an era, then just enjoy it hahahah... everything they've done is beautiful in its own way. But yes, any of those song is a good starting point, personally i love Harlequin Forest (beautiful acoustic passage)
The abrupt end to the track is due to it leading into another track; A trait Tesseract is well known for, sometimes having several parts or movements tied together to form a larger cohesive piece. Dan the vocalist here does have a very clean tone but he is fully capable of some grittier vocals. I'm sure you'll get requests for songs from their record "Altered State" featuring a different vocalist Ashe, who was also fantastic. To hear some older Tesseract with Dan before he parted & later returned to the band I'd recommend "Concealing Fate pt.2". A really groove driven track with some more aggressive vocals. ruclips.net/video/qki712bg84w/видео.html Additionally I think you'd really appreciate the group Monuments, who are considered one of the big "djent" bands such as Tesseract/Periphery. Fun fact all 3 bands have actually links with a guitarist each of Monuments & Tesseract once being in a band together & the former vocalist of Monuments was also in Periphery for a short while. My pick for Monuments would be "Mirror Image". It's not their most technical track by any stretch but its's a great introduction to their groovy style & Chris Barretto's fine vocal work. ruclips.net/video/qki712bg84w/видео.html Apologies for the huge load of information haha, really enjoying your analysis of these tracks though :)
A rumour I heard about TesseracT (from Matt Garstka's stream actually) is that they all play to different clicks on their songs... that kinda blew my mind a little. Love TesseracT and love your vids!
You hit the nail on the head on "spacing". What makes Meshuggah so incredibly groovy and what sets them apart from their "djent"-prog juniors is exactly this; the way they lay down the quiet moments within the rhythmic chaos is what grounds their songs and makes them so head-bangable.
Protest the hero - bloodmeat, the canary, all hands, tidal, skies All superb songs! And the metal/rock genres imo most unique and skilled vocalist as well as some of the most insane guitar riffs I’ve heard

In a way that makes me love it even more. Thank you Geebz! The people are right, the live recordings of "Of Matter" are up there. Truly superb.
TesseracT, YES! I'm hyped! This band is mind-blowing, amazingly good and talented. Please do a couple of other songs by them to get their ''full spectrum of music''. They're an insane band that keeps growing, they have no best albums since all of their albums are killers. Btw, about the ending, this song kinda has no ending. It flows over perfectly in the next song, and imo these two tracks belong together. That's why the open ending might've left you a bit unsatisfied.
Their drummer (Jay Postones, AKA the ghost note king) is pretty active on twitch/youtube and such - really cool to see how he thinks about rhythm and writing
Hey Geebz, for your 1 year anniversary i'd recommend Eden from Tesseract's first album One. It's probably in my top 5 most favorite songs of all time. Also congrats on the one year anniversary! Been an absolute pleasure watching you dissect, react and bring a fresh perspective to some of the music that I listen to daily. So here's to another year!
This is definitely a good introduction track to Tesseract. If you like the syncopation, many of their works of theirs that are more complicated and heavy. And you are correct: this song trails into track 2 on the album seamlessly. That track, if you're interested, had a live in-studio take including a duet with guest vocalist Martin Grech: please check this link ruclips.net/video/eirPeYZ8V-E/видео.html
Yay! You finally did it! Glad you enjoyed it! If you plan to come back definitely go with one if the songs off of the album altered state like nocturne!

Your channel really has grown fast man congrats on the upcoming 25k, I love watching you react to basically all my favorite music. Keep up the great vids.
Another of my favourite bands! One cool thing about their live show is that they have all the ambient music running on tracks and so they can run from one song to another without ruining the atmosphere with talking. They also get a chance to have a drink, change guitars etc. Pretty cool.
Omg. I found TesseracT last year, and fell in love with the atmosphere and complexity and beauty of their music. Any song. Any song you do I am going to be here 🤘🖤
check out Voices from the Fuselage. You will also be in love with them. Wish they had more music than just the double album Odyssey but what they lack in albums they make up for it in production and AMAZING EPIC layered songs with angelic vocals. If you love Dan's voice you'll love Ashe''s voice
Glad you mentioned the juxtaposition of the more melodic “clean” vocals against the more aggressive nature of the music while discussing the spaces within the arrangement. Brought the band Sleep Token to mind. “The Offering” and “Higher” are my recommendations :)
It would be great to see you talk about the band Sleep Token. They're a super interesting mix of pop/indie with metal. The songs The Offering and Higher might be my favourite.
Love Tesseract, but I think their best work is when they abandoned the screaming vocals from their debut album in favor of more melodic vocals on their second album, "Altered State". I think the "Of Matter" and "Of Mind" suite's of music on that album represent their best yet, at least for me. As for recommendations, I'm sticking with Frost, "The Dividing Line". I own thousands of albums from the 60's through the current day and there's not a single album that contains anything quite like Frost. This song represents one of the finest neo-prog songs in existence. So looking forward to you discovering them!
Hey! Loving the videos and insight you provide! I usually dont ask for people to watch stuff but from your like of playing with time signatures and other weird progressive stuff I think you might enjoy a band called Demetori. They are a somewhat unknown band from japan, so would be really cool to have someone shine some light on them! For the song you can choose pretty much anything, since their song titles are mostly japanese even I dont remember most of the names even though Im an avid listener of them :) Keep making great content, loving every upload!
Ive been crafting the theory of why i like all this music i listen to so much besides the fact im a drummer at heart, and im glad youve validated my theory of space and how its used being why i like this music so much. Keep em coming Geebz!
The vocalist Daniel Tompkins is an amazing vocalist. Also the vocalist of older band SKYHARBOR (worth checking out) as well as his solo work. He does "in the studio" takes of some tracks. His ability to switch between beautiful melody and dirty scream is mind blowing.
Dan is a professional vocal coach as well. He is one of the few who can hit those 3-4 octave changes effortlessly and not killing his voice or himself :)
I just wanted to say that, as a musician, the things you discuss when talking about the videos you are watching, it puts you at the top of my REACTION RUclipsrs. Thank you for the awesome content. And keep it up.
I learned to play this on drums after 7 years of playing fairly straight forward songs in terms of rhythms; mastering this song has made me feel like I actually can play my instrument. I love the vids, Geebz. Keep it up!
ahhh... and then the song blends perfectly into Hexes on the album ruclips.net/video/eirPeYZ8V-E/видео.html. Dystopia is such an epic opening track. The whole album is great, start to finish. A Particular highlight being Phoenix, which has a falsetto section near the middle that'll guarantee you chickenskin: ruclips.net/video/sALofxfxTJE/видео.html I missed their London show so I flew out to Stockholm to see these guys and it was absolutely incredible. They were supported by The Contortionist too, another band you'll likely want to check out! ruclips.net/video/x79AWms__yU/видео.html (You did ask for links...)
I seriously look forward to watching these videos when I get home from work. Just so simple and casual, always learning something within each “decomposition”. Here’s another from Tesseract that highlights their production and style so well: Juno ruclips.net/video/UbQbAPvhs_8/видео.html
Oh boy with what was a major talking point of this video i swear i have to recommend Between the Buried and Me or Nova Collective. For Between the Buried and Me Extremophile Elite is a must. For Nova Collective i really recommend Dancing Machines. Specifically this video, ruclips.net/video/HwPe5jVYKe4/видео.html
Hopefully you'll enjoy checking out Ayreon - The Day That The World Breaks Down (ruclips.net/video/oFuMKdrzPqU/видео.html). Ayreon is a project by Dutch songwriter/musician/producer Arjen Lucassen. Easiest way to explain his project is to say it's basically the prog rock/metal version of Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds.
Loved your Karnivool video and now TesseracT... awesome. TesseracT used to have more screaming style vocals buy have moved away from that in later albums, which is my preference. They are my top two bands followed by 'the Contortionist', 'Periphery' and 'Gojira' in no particular order. You should check them out as well.
@@GrizzlyAt0ms song gives all the feels when you tie it to whats been going on this year. Pushing to an uncertain future to likely meet our demise, but never look back, keep going.
You know when u really want to show someone a song and when you play it you can tell they're not really listening? Showing this guy a song is the ultimate satisfaction.
Tesseract really stood out for me last year from the crowd of new prog metal bands. I'm nearly 50, but still keep looking for new bands, though I do frequently get back to older bands like Marillion, Rush and early Genesis.
That was the ending, kind of... It transitions into the next track which if memory serves is called Hexes. If you want to check it out, you're in for a treat.
The singer that filled in for Dan back around 2013 has his own band called Voices From The Fuselage that put out their most recent album in 2018, if you feel up for it you should check out their song Life on Titan. The band is terribly underrated imo
Yes YES pleas please do Voices from the Fuselage. So so EPIC. they need more love (and albums). I already posted my request above. here's a starter: ruclips.net/video/wnyv0QYJpe0/видео.html
Meteorites would be best first as it showcases their entire spectrum of talent on vocals and riffs and production. Life on Titan is great but 5 other songs are even better for a breakdown but Ill take Anything of VFTF from Geebz please!!! Those 2 albums of Odyssey need to be listened to in their entirety back to back to fully appreciate that entire journey/story they put out as a WHOLE
I've noticed that across TesseracT albums, the hi-hat always sounds like it's on the right side. Most music I listen to situates the drums as if you were actually sitting behind the kit, which as a drummer, I love. For me, I just picture a left-handed drumkit setup and it makes sense. But mostly, I think that simple sound reversal does even more to set TesseracT apart from their contemporaries. Truly one of the greatest bands of all time. Edit: Please accept my humble request and make a video for their song "Hexes" - it's the follow-up track to this one. Talk about space...this music is masterfully crafted.
My first experience with Tesseract was them opening with an early version of Smile followed by this song in their set, first show of the Dystopia tour in Big Flats, NY, July 2017 with Lillake, Meshuggah, and Megadeth, which I went to with my dad. That show got me into Tesseract and Meshuggah, and their performance of everything was amazing.
Great video man! You mentioned the specific panning of the drums here - it's common for drums to be panned from the listener's perspective, as if you were watching the band. This would put the hats on the right, and the toms panning high to low from left to right, etc.
interesting when you talk about the hi hat being so prominent on the right side, i think whats actually happening is jay (the drummer) is keeping a constant 8th note hi hat pedal chick throughout most of the song and what you're actually hearing is a cymbal stack on the right that has a very quick decaying sound so it sounds similar, but a bit crunchier than an actual hi hat
I love the time you take to give each aspect of the arrangement a spotlight. Different but amicable from other reactors I've seen. This is actually my personal favorite band. I hope you'll take another look at them. They've got quite a discography to check out. If I could recommend anything personally for you to check out if you'd like (and there's so much I could), I'd say Nocturne (the full version), Resist, or Proxy. Those all could off the same album, an album that I would say is the best one from an engineering perspective. Thanks again. Hope you'll check out more TesseracT. :)
This guy randomly poped up on my feed but now im subscribing. I'm a HUGE fan of djent and prog metal and especially Daniel Tomkins the vocalist. He used to be in this one band Skyharbor. The C.D Guiding lights from Skyharbor is one of the most amazing albums I've ever listened to with amazing amazing vocals from Daniel tomkins. Any song is amazing from that cd but my favorite songs from that album is idle minds, miracle and the song guiding lights. It will blow you away!
You should check out the live studio "Of Matter" by them, and also "Hexes". Also, if you decide to discover some more Tool (who wouldn't), i'd love to see your reaction to "Third Eye" from their album Ænima.
Talking in my sleep Cursing through my teeth, sweating in the heat Stuck inside this dream of darkening frustration Liars in my dream I'm frightened and I'm weak, there's nothing left for me And the visions I endure are simply entertainment Dark figures chasing me I hear the wolf that cries, see them multiply You're ablaze behind the eyes They burn into my memory A sudden sense of hope The virtue of my ghost, you're another ugly host And I can't believe that you would just Deny everything I choose to live free Took a second warning then I said goodbye With tainted eyes I need to believe It took a little longer to sympathise And you were hoping I would give in to you I won't dance because you want me to No romance, deep down I only want to be the same Now there's nowhere left to hide Game of chance, I roll the dice for you Hopeless glance, deep down I only want to be the same Now there's nowhere left to hide The greatest thing you'll ever learn Is just to love and be loved in return I'm living such a life Therein lies your problem Imperfect, circular, entropy The fatal conclusion With a little sympathy it'll burn inside Let the fires decide Imperfect and circular I won't comfort you No, it won't be the same There's nowhere left to hide And I won't comfort you No, it won't be the same There's nowhere left to hide And I won't comfort you No, it won't be the same There's nowhere left to hide And I won't comfort you No, it won't be the same There's nowhere left to hide
1000% agree. They are one of a kind. Mixing classic prog, symphonic rock, metal, jazz fusion, jam band, and psychedelic. Moon Safari is also a great band, although they are more straight forward symphonic prog.
This song flows directly into Hexes, which is also a masterpiece. I feel like you have to listen to them together. This is their best album. Also, Id recommend Inmazes by VOLA
A musician never dies, he decomposes

The song ends abruptly like that as that padding bleeds into the next song "Hexes", and becomes the intro into that track.

A Particular highlight being Phoenix, which has a falsetto section near the middle that'll guarantee you chickenskin: ruclips.net/video/sALofxfxTJE/видео.html
I missed their London show so I flew out to Stockholm to see these guys and it was absolutely incredible. They were supported by The Contortionist too, another band you'll likely want to check out! ruclips.net/video/x79AWms__yU/видео.html
(You did ask for links...)
Dan is an amazing vocalist. The whole band is just so locked in. Also that 2nd skyharbor album may be dans best work.
I'm really really enjoying your reactions, your insight is inspiring, please do more periphery, or a band called loathe
TesseracT is incredible. Thanks for doing a react!
Liked the video before it started! TesseracT is my favorite band! Thank you!
I seriously look forward to watching these videos when I get home from work. Just so simple and casual, always learning something within each “decomposition”. Here’s another from Tesseract that highlights their production and style so well: Juno
ruclips.net/video/UbQbAPvhs_8/видео.html
Tesseract is one of my favorite bands.
The best videos of the band here are the ones they record in studios. They are amazing live.
Yes and yes!
Ayreon is an absolute must.. I mean, it's an opera, so obviously heavily predicated on composition.
I'd love to see you do an arrangement v composition video as you mentioned. I'm learning a ton by watching your vids. Thanks!
LEPROUS - Castaway Angels
Please por favor. Its such a beautiful ballad. Deserves all the love and praise.
Maybe my favorite new song I've heard this year, and I'm not even that big a fan of Leprous
@@GrizzlyAt0ms song gives all the feels when you tie it to whats been going on this year. Pushing to an uncertain future to likely meet our demise, but never look back, keep going.
This is a very cool song. Never heard of them before. I'm going to look em up now. Thanks
This is the type of band where you put on the first song of the album and listen to the whole thing as one.
Especially altered state. It's great.
Hopefully you will discover Haken, Leprous and Caligulas Horse soon!
You know when u really want to show someone a song and when you play it you can tell they're not really listening? Showing this guy a song is the ultimate satisfaction.
Great reaction, dude! I love how on a first listen, you can pick out the detail you do.
Incredible. Keep it up!
Tesseract really stood out for me last year from the crowd of new prog metal bands. I'm nearly 50, but still keep looking for new bands, though I do frequently get back to older bands like Marillion, Rush and early Genesis.
Dude. You’re hitting all my faves ... Meshuggah, Periphery, Tesseract ... great stuff brother🤙
That was the ending, kind of...
It transitions into the next track which if memory serves is called Hexes.
If you want to check it out, you're in for a treat.
This guy has awesome bleeh-bleh-bleeeehh.This is exactly the insight I like in reaction vids. Thanks Old Composer! Subscribed!
I recommend Animals As Leaders! Great band, great musicians and great writing also!
The long outro is the transition for the next song, Hexes. You should check it out
I was hoping for some TesseracT! Awesome channel! Love your videos
I recommend listening to reptile by periphery its right up your alley!
Glad you enjoyed! Its basically all produced and mixed by one of the members Acle Kahney
only just came across your channel and I'm addicted. Great fun. Subbed
That show got me into Tesseract and Meshuggah, and their performance of everything was amazing.
you need to get into Voices from the Fuselage as well
Great video man! You mentioned the specific panning of the drums here - it's common for drums to be panned from the listener's perspective, as if you were watching the band. This would put the hats on the right, and the toms panning high to low from left to right, etc.
All your videos are awesome. Keep it up!
That outro bleeds into the intro of Hexes which is probably my favorite Tesseract song.
Check out the next song called "Hexes". It's the song that comes after Dystopia!
interesting when you talk about the hi hat being so prominent on the right side, i think whats actually happening is jay (the drummer) is keeping a constant 8th note hi hat pedal chick throughout most of the song and what you're actually hearing is a cymbal stack on the right that has a very quick decaying sound so it sounds similar, but a bit crunchier than an actual hi hat
TesseracT's guitar tone is so addictive
Yeah mi favourite band of all time. This songwriting is on another level.
You should check out the live studio "Of Matter" by them, and also "Hexes".
Also, if you decide to discover some more Tool (who wouldn't), i'd love to see your reaction to "Third Eye" from their album Ænima.
Talking in my sleep
Cursing through my teeth, sweating in the heat
Stuck inside this dream of darkening frustration
Liars in my dream
I'm frightened and I'm weak, there's nothing left for me
And the visions I endure are simply entertainment
Dark figures chasing me
I hear the wolf that cries, see them multiply
You're ablaze behind the eyes
They burn into my memory
A sudden sense of hope
The virtue of my ghost, you're another ugly host
And I can't believe that you would just
Deny everything
I choose to live free
Took a second warning then I said goodbye
With tainted eyes I need to believe
It took a little longer to sympathise
And you were hoping I would give in to you
I won't dance because you want me to
No romance, deep down I only want to be the same
Now there's nowhere left to hide
Game of chance, I roll the dice for you
Hopeless glance, deep down I only want to be the same
Now there's nowhere left to hide
The greatest thing you'll ever learn
Is just to love and be loved in return
I'm living such a life
Therein lies your problem
Imperfect, circular, entropy
The fatal conclusion
With a little sympathy it'll burn inside
Let the fires decide
Imperfect and circular
I won't comfort you
No, it won't be the same
There's nowhere left to hide
And I won't comfort you
No, it won't be the same
There's nowhere left to hide
And I won't comfort you
No, it won't be the same
There's nowhere left to hide
And I won't comfort you
No, it won't be the same
There's nowhere left to hide
you've reacted to two of my favorite bands: tesseract & the mars volta. pls do more! subscribed 😌
Great song! Listen to an unknown, but phenomenal band called The Flower Kings: Devils Playground. Compositional masterpiece.
1000% agree. They are one of a kind. Mixing classic prog, symphonic rock, metal, jazz fusion, jam band, and psychedelic.
Moon Safari is also a great band, although they are more straight forward symphonic prog.
TESSERACT! Hexes is another great track
This song flows directly into Hexes, which is also a masterpiece. I feel like you have to listen to them together. This is their best album. Also, Id recommend Inmazes by VOLA
