  • This is an admittedly 'pretty bad' peek at the Aliexpress SWM 7805C car radio. It's just to give a quick idea of how the interface functions and a few of the features.

    Noah had a question on current draw while powered down since the screen stays on, I'll put the comment here so all can easily see:
    I put the radio on the bench and powered it up again to see what the current draw is with it powered down. Here is what I found:
    *With the unit OFF but still connected to power (red and yellow leads) it drew around 200 mA as the screen was still active displaying the time.
    *With the unit ON (FM Radio) and the volume down it drew around 400 mA (to simulate the unit running, at a low volume)
    *With the unit OFF (No Screen Showing) and the red lead disconnected (similar to the ACC being off in a car) but the yellow (memory) lead still connected, I only read between 0.01 and 0.00 mA. So the power draw was so low as to be basically nil. So basically, in order to use this in a boom box/table radio type of situation without killing the batteries, you would have to put a switch on the red lead and power that down so just the yellow/black leads were connected. I confirmed that this held the settings and drew basically no current. A bit inconvenient to have to turn a switch on and then turn the unit on, but in order to preserve power when you're not using it, I guess that's what we will have to do. Thanks for posting the question!

    Good to see you doing some videos! Missed you at MWAF this past year. I may just need to pick one if these up to make a cheap portable build with. Could be pretty cool.

      Hey man! I missed being there, I look forward to it each year. Lord willing, we'll be there this year.
      There are a few things I'm going to be digging into with this radio, including the possibility of removing the rear board altogether; I'll have to do some checking on what's going on with each of the lines on the ribbon cable connecting the front and rear boards. I have a few more coming to me in case I bork this one up! :)

    Hey tom, i am a „beginer“ speaker builder i build my first speaker like 3-4 years ago and i saw your „the summer winds“ build and i want to build a 3 way tower speaker with the woofer you used, the sls-p8390945 but i cant find the zma and the frd files any where online...
    But i need them for design my crossover with the program vituixcad.
    Or is there a another way?
    How did you do your crossover in that project?
    And sorry for the bad english im from germany

      Hey Jerry,
      Sorry I'm just replying now, I'm not great at managing comments at youtube.
      I generated ZMA and FRD flies with the driver in-box. The data I generated would be specific to that particular box and baffle shape, so it would be best to measure in your own box when you get it completed. I used two products from Parts Express called DATS and Omnimic. DATS will get you the ZMA, and Omnimic will get you the FRD files. ZMA impedance is specific to the particular box volume, and the FRD will be different for a particular baffle shape and size. Generating your own files after you've build your enclosure is really the way to go. You can find those products at Parts-express.com, that's where I get my speaker drivers from, they're a fantastic company.

      @@thomaszarbo9535 Can you verify that the BT connection doesn't get dropped when there is silence being streamed? I have the SWM 80A that's exhibiting that behavior which is apparently common in cheap BLE chips and wondering whether purchasing this HU might be an option.

    On the diagram there is one wire that says steering wheel input what is that . Can i use my steering wheel buttons to control the unit ? Is there a way to wire it in ? Does this support steering wheel input ?

    • @thomaszarbo9535
      @thomaszarbo9535  3 года назад

      I believe you can use the steering wheel input on some cars with this. The manual won't tell too much of the story probably. I'd go to Aliexpress and find someone who sells this product with a fair number of comments and question/answers. You may be able to find some better information there. I've purchased other radios from Ali and Banggood and received instructions from a different radio that didn't even pertain to what I bought. I don't expect too much from the documentation at this point. Good luck! And feel free to report back with any info you find, it may help others. --Tom

    • @thomaszarbo9535
      @thomaszarbo9535  3 года назад +1

      Since its a car stereo, and power is readily available, the screen is supposed to stay on even when the radio is off.
      The only way to do it is to cut power to the main 12v power line with a switch, but then you loose your settings unfortunately. You could try to hack the board to switch on/off the display, but that would be difficult to do, and may introduce noise into the video signal.
      If you would like to see some of what I tried to do with this radio, check out the Tech Talk forum at Parts Express website, or link: techtalk.parts-express.com/forum/tech-talk-forum/1432244-alternative-to-faceplate-preamp-unit-for-table-radios

    Thomas, read with great interest your thread about this line of SWM units on Parts-Express. Amazing how far Chinese consumer electronics have come in the last 10 years. $30 for this thing? Both cool and a little frightening they can hit that price point with these features and decent quality and still turn a profit (the state subsidies and currency manipulation help of course...).
    Has anyone figured out a way to power down the unit completely (no standby screen/clock) without losing the memory? Concerned about battery drain in a truck that might not get driven for a few weeks at a time. In automotive, anything more than a 40-100 mA cumulative draw in sleep mode is going to tax the charging system. I read you measured this unit has a 280 mA draw in standby -- way too much.
    I guess for $30 you're not going to get world class circuit engineering? ;)
    Maybe wiring in a capacitor or a coin type battery for memory retention? But that's a pretty big screen to keep powered up.
    This unit is so close to being exactly what I was looking for:
    - Single DIN
    - Rotary volume knob
    - Aux input
    - No cheap chrome plastic trim
    - No annoying frou frou like dancing dolphin animations (i.e. Pioneer DEH series)
    - No branding
    Only issue is the standby mode and memory retention issue.

    • @thomaszarbo9535
      @thomaszarbo9535  3 года назад +2

      Noah, I agree with your assessment... this thing is very clean looking and not at all gimmick-y with lots of bright colors and animations, just real nice looking.
      Regarding the power retention issue...If you notice in the video, I left both the 12 power and yellow always-on lines connected together.
      After thinking about it more, I believe that if the red power line were removed from power, but the yellow kept connected, it would retain memory but turn off the clock. In a car, this is accomplished by the ignition on/off/retain function of the car itself. In a radio such as I would like to build with this, there is no "ignition" to kill the main (red) line to the radio. If that were switched with a physical switch, with the yellow always connected to the power, it should be able to power down the screen while retaining memory. I'll test this out in a day or two and get back with another comment.

      I don't believe you can. I'm not saying it's not possible, but documentation is so sparse and hit-or-miss that I wouldn't know how to do so. The left USB stick does read data, so if it were possible, that would be how it could be done.

    Bought one as replacement for my Sony that has issue with USB port.
    Well i went with this one, because i could not justify purchasing again Sony and to pay more than i paid 10 years ago.
    This one is well made of Chinesium worked for a month, video playback would work ( no 720p support ) but suddenly after just two months it just freezes when i try to play video file.
    And the sound sound is just horrible, it burned one of my SD cards. Overall cheap Chinese crap, i really do not think it will last a year, well it will do until i buy another quality mp3 player.
