    “The Body” is the most realistically grounded episode _Buffy_ tackled; there’s no combat or magic, just the seriousness of a late parent and the need for closure.

    Poor James Marsters, watching the scene where Spike attempts to assault Buffy is even harder to watch nowadays, knowing that he hate filming it, and vowed that he would never again do something like it again.

      If I remember correctly it was cause Joss Whedon hated that Spike had gotten popular, intending him to only be there for one or two seasons. He thought by giving him a scene like that the fans would hate him and he could fire him but it never happened.
      In an interview, James Masters said Whedon had slammed him to the wall and said (Paraphrasing) "If you weren't so loved I'd fire you on the spot."

      @@LadyKattrina84 I mean, Spike first shows up in season 2, and the bathroom scene occurs in season 6.
      It seems plausible, knowing Whedon, that he held the grudge for that long and made Marsters do a scene he wasn’t comfortable with to get back at him, but if he wanted fans to hate Spike, he probably needed to make this scene happen much earlier in the series.
      Side note: I had heard that the Buffybot plot was a similar idea- Whedon wanting to make Marsters’ character less likable by having them do something gross and off-putting (rather than flat out criminal like SA.)
      It also wouldn’t be consistent with letting Spike be redeemed after the SA or come back for a season of Angel after Buffy was over, especially considering how Spike’s plot on Buffy ends.

    • @LadyKattrina84
      @LadyKattrina84 Месяц назад +2

      @@chloemchll3774 I heard cause he brought in viewers Whedon was like, stuck. trying to find ways for people to hate him but the execs were like "He pulls in numbers, fix it." But this all came out a year ago when the cast were all speaking out about Whedon.

Even changed my work schedule in high school when it changes nights. 😂 Im not sure I would have navigated high school as well as I did if this show hadn't been on. I did not know James hated that bathroom scene and then put a clause in his contracts. Learn something new everyday. Love buffy, always have always will! Still remember Buffys quote as she sacrificed herself "the hardest thing in this world is to live in it." Almost 40 now and its still a true quote from a fictional show.

    So many brilliant moments in this show it's hard to make a list. The deaths of Joyce, Jenny and Tara were shocking, as was Spike's sexual assault of Buffy in Seeing Red. Somehow Faith's sexual assault and attempted rape and murder of Xander in S3 E15 Consequences is never given the same importance, because it was female on male sexual assault. Oz having to leave Willow was heartbreaking. My all time favourite moment from the show is when Spike tells Buffy in S5 E7 Fool For Love that she had a death wish. The transitions in that episode were outstanding, and the the fact that that episode was packed with foreshadowing for the later episodes in the show.

    They made Buffy look so amateurish as a fighter during that bathroom scene. She was just slightly injured compared to the many other times that she fought while hurt. I doubt that they would've done that w/ Angel getting assaulted by Drusilla.

    • @bottomofastairwell
      @bottomofastairwell 29 дней назад +1

      see, i always figured it's not that she COULDN'T fight back, it's that she did what a ton of real life survivors of SA do. she just kind of froze or stopped thinking clearly or whatever, because you brain just goes on vacation the shock a panic and shit are so strong. so a lot of people don't clearly say "no, stop" or shove people away, they just kind of freeze up or do things that don't necessarily make sense.
      so i figured it was kind of like that. not that she couldn't fight back, cuz she's obviously killed way worse monsters. but that the shock of what was happening was so intense that she wasn't really thinking clearly enough to go into "slayer fighting mode"

    • @jp3813
      @jp3813 29 дней назад

      @@bottomofastairwell That's what training is for. Heck, vampire bites are often portrayed as sensual in this show. Hence, it can be argued that she fights off such assaults every night. Fun fact, the scene was initially conceived by a female writer who once tried to force herself on her ex-boyfriend in a desperate attempt to save their relationship. He easily pushed her away and that memory had been haunting her since. She pictured the scene exactly the same way w/ the genders reversed since Buffy has superpowers. But then other writers got their hands on it.

    Season 1: Buffy learns Angel is a Vampire
    Season 2: Kendra arrives in Sunnydale
    Drusilla kills Kendra
    Season 3: Earshot definitely. Should have been top 3 given that the episode had to be delayed due to the tragedy in Columbine
    Angels return
    Faith kills the deputy Mayor
    They blow up the school.
    Season 4: Buffy and Riley learn the truth.
    Season 5: Buffys death obviously. Not Giles killing Ben.
    Season 6: Where everyone finds out Buffy was actually in Heaven. One of the few series to pull off a musical episode successfully.

    • @chloemchll3774
      @chloemchll3774 Месяц назад +2

      Much better character with far more agency and a more interesting arc.
      Everything important happens to Angel through no real choice or action of his own. Spike, in contrast, is a clear product of his choices (even becoming a vampire is something he wants because it gave him the power to save his sick mom, albeit that didn’t work out like he planned.) The only thing that sort of just happens to Spike is the Initiative neutering him, and even then, it is a consequence of his actions of returning to Sunnydale to try and kill Buffy yet again. But certainly anything around the presence of his soul (both giving it up and seeking it out to reclaim it) are Spike’s choice, whereas they always just ever happen to Angel/Angelus by forces outside his control.
      Characters with agency will always be more interesting than characters who are purely victims of fate.

    I've lost count decades ago as to how many times I've seen the show, so the shock value is gone on this show, but the entertainment value still stands. This is a good list. I think I'd switch my order around and take #'s 10 & 8 off the list and replacing #8 with Jonathan's season 4 moment and #10 with Buffy in heaven and #4 with Spike getting his soul. And even then I would still not have the numbers as is. Mine would be:
    10. Buffy dies/Sacrifices herself
    9. My number 10 (Buffy announces she was in heaven)
    8. this list's number 9 (Dawn's arrival)
    7. The bathroom scene (a soulless vampire used by a depressed Buffy. The real shocker was that "it" was shown onscreen, which is why its lower on my list)
    6. My replacement for number 8 (Jonathan making himself famous)
    5. Joyce's death (not really shocking to me as it was announced by the episode before and the teaser at the the end of said episode. It was more a denial moment for me, which is different than shocking, but also... the denial makes it somewhat shocking).
    4. Spike's soul restored
    3. Angel's soul taken away
    2. Jenny's death (not quite as out of nowhere as #1, but just enough to put as #2 on the list)
    1. Tara's death (so out of nowhere it has no choice to be the #1 of shocking)
    I get emotional in different ways over the entire show still, in different ways (including these moments) but this was my list when it aired. But the shock value isn't there, anymore, after 27 years. AtS would effect this list, as well.

    While I understand why it bothers so many people, including the actors involved, I think the SA scene with Spike is a necessary component of his character arc and the overall Spuffy plot of the final 2 seasons. I can’t discuss why without going into plot so consider this a spoiler warning.
    Spike is introduced as an evil character. In the course of several failed attempts to kill Buffy, and subsequently being effectively neutered to being non-violent by the Initiative, he falls in love with Buffy, or at least he thinks he does (what he really does is fall in lust with Buffy, but being evil/soulless, he isn’t capable of being in love.) He discovers he can be violent if the target of the violence is a demon (aka evil) so he joins with Buffy because it lets him act out his violent desires on her enemies while also allowing him to be close to his, for lack of a better word, crush. He even is self-sacrificing on her behalf, and as such, he starts to see himself as a good being. At this point, Buffy also begins to see the possibility of real goodness in him. But Buffy’s sacrifice to save Dawn and her subsequent revival in season 6 opens another possibility, as Spike becomes her only ally that she can trust with secret of why she seems so despondent after her revival. This closeness leads Spike to confront Buffy about his feelings, and, following a bit of violence between the two that feels more like foreplay, they sleep together.
    Their relationship continues until Buffy has the realization that she doesn’t (and really, at this point, can’t) love Spike. While never explicitly stated, Spike’s lack of a soul prevents her from ever really loving him, and as such, she is only using him as a source of comfort/pleasure while dealing with her post revival mood. Spike does not take that news well, and after she rebukes his advances more than once, the infamous bathroom scene occurs.
    The main story function of this scene is it crystalizes for Spike why Buffy can’t love him and why he really can’t love Buffy, no matter how much he wants her. His lack of a soul makes his want of her entirely selfish, and this is laid bare for both us as the audience and him as a character in that bathroom scene. Buffy, however, always knew this about him, which is why she never loved him and was only using him (her words.) All of this sets him on his subsequent plot of trying to become someone Buffy could actually love, and drives him to win his soul back, which comes at the cost of being tortured for all the evil things he’d done. This allows for his redemption arc as well as the possibility for Buffy and Spike to have a genuine relationship instead of being the user and the one who doesn’t mind being used.
    I am not saying James was in any way wrong for choosing to never shoot another SA scene again after it, and I think the fact that it makes so many people uncomfortable shows that for a show with a supernatural premise it was remarkably well grounded when dealing with how it depicts something like SA. But my main argument is that it is the inciting event on Spike’s path to redemption and without something so intensely horrible and selfish, he wouldn’t have seen himself for what he really was at that point in the story.

      Spike's path to redemption does not excuse the SA. Spike knew about those Demon trials all the time he was thirsty for Buff & probably before he even got to Sunnydale. Could have done trials anytime.

    • @chloemchll3774
      @chloemchll3774 Месяц назад

      @@Kentrc11 This is tricky, because while you might be right (I honestly don’t know for sure when he first knew of the trials; my memory was that he finds out about them after the SA, but maybe he always knew the rumors about them and only found out the specifics after?) I don’t think it matters because my whole point was he would never have had the motivation to undergo the trials until after the SA even if he did know of them before, because it was only in that moment (the SA) that Spike realizes:
      1) Buffy will never love him as he is
      2) Buffy was very serious when she called off their sexual relationship; considering that so much of their sexual relationship was antagonistic and violent to that point I think there’s a real argument to be made that Spike was confusing the SA for foreplay and only understood what he did as wrong by how forcefully Buffy stopped him and following the stop by confronting him with “ask me again why I could never love you”.
      3) What Spike felt for Buffy up to that point was too selfishly motivated to ever really be love, and as such, that he was incapable of truly loving anyone unless he went on the path of redemption.
      Ultimately, I think the best comparison might be to an addict who has to hit rock bottom before they can accept their addiction for what it is and begin a road to recovery (side note- considering that addiction is a theme that runs through season 6, I think this as Spike’s rock bottom moment works even better.)
      There is nothing redemptive about the SA itself, but I do think it is a necessary part of his redemptive arc as his rock bottom moment that inspired true change rather than merely performative change. And since his redemptive arc begins before the SA, I include it as a part of his arc, despite it also being a completely despicable act on his part that is in no way redemptive in and of itself.

      @@Kentrc11 Agreed- I said it doesn’t justify it or excuse it as an act; I was mainly trying to justify its inclusion in the story as being necessary to making his character arc more believable, not in anyway trying to justify the act itself.
      As for whether or not improving yourself after hitting rock bottom should “give them a pass”, I think again you are missing the point; Spike absolutely doesn’t get a “pass” in the series- what he gets is Buffy giving him a chance to prove he is a better person now, which is different than getting a pass and ultimately, I think that’s kind of up to the wronged party. Again, think of my alcoholic analogy, but this time change the rock bottom event from being causing an accident while DUI to hitting your spouse or child because you lost control while drunk- choosing to get better doesn’t excuse the bad act, but whether or not the drunk deserves forgiveness is much more up to the wronged party. If they don’t get it, that’s a consequence of their actions. If they get it (like Spike does from Buffy) then it should still by no means be forgotten and their future actions will be colored by the lens of the past bad deeds.

    The craziest thing about "The Body" and Joyce's passing iz the fact that Dawn's existence created her aneurism and ultimately created her death. It was her mind's reaction to the monks magically inserting the memories of the key's (Dawn) existence. Watching the series for the umpteenth time, i was so relieved that they never explored that and expressed it to Dawn 😓

    Although, I do think that Warren's death should have been much higher. That's top 5 for me.
    I'm also glad that you included the bathroom scene. That was on my list too, but part of me thought that you might not mention it. People seem to want to forget that that happened. SA is something that occurs both in real life and on TV. Trying to sweep it under the rug isn't going to make it go away.

      Especially when you consider that Earshot’s originally scheduled air date was the week of Columbine (in other words, Columbine had no influence on the writing or production of this episode) and the network chose to hold the episode until the summer causing that season to effectively air out of order.
      That said, the specifics are not exactly the same, and in reality, Earshot’s plot has more in common with the real life story that inspired the Pearl Jam song Jeremy (which tells the story of a real bullied kid who shot himself in front of his whole class but, like Jonathan, never intended to hurt anyone but himself.)
      I think the timing of the two (Columbine and Earshot) made people connect them.
