The most indepth review of this laptop out there. Excellent work. I've had this laptop for about a month now and aside from the bug it had with turbo mode I've had a great experience, it is the perfect laptop. (For anyone having thr turbo mode bug just use manual, performance or silent until they fix it)
Thanks, i switched over from a Legion 5 Pro with a 6800H 3070 to this for the same price, this and your older legion vs Zephyrus g15 video really helped me get perspective.
Damn, dude. This was a hell of a review. Found a great deal on the 3080 version of this model and went for it based on your review. Thanks for being so thorough in this video!
Most reviewers compare laptop in terms of raw performance which is not correct imo. A laptop is a portable machine and efficiency is top priority in every department. If someone wants brute raw performance just build a desktop at half the cost of laptop and remote to that for heavy tasks. You mention it very clearly. Portability, battery life and performance efficiency are highlights of this laptop.
@@sub-vibes its an awesome machine, no complaint. it used to restart a lot during heavy load when it was new. I think ASUS have fixed it in new drivers, it doesn't happen anymore.
Hey I'm planning to get one now (the Rtx 3080 version) over the new 40 series cards. Can you give an update about your satisfaction and also how is the battery backup (cuz I'm a student)?
Hi Josh, By any reason, I was recommending some important steps on this comment section for a bigger performance with your laptops and got deleted. If you can find it, please share it, as it will help all of you. I guess it has been due to the size as it was a detailed guide of how to do it.
I have the 2021, this one is better, but I'm waiting for the 2023 version. I think it's going to be REALLY good (Asus usually does model refreshes every other year) so g15 should get vapor chamber and 16:10 screen. Pie in the sky would be a mini led screen. I also wish they'd get rid of the stupid holes in the screen.
The inclusion of a 1.21 gigawatts/hour Nucleonic Sub-Thermal Ohm-Reactor, which will take the cortisol-saturation and dopamine feedback loops of social media engagement algorithms and frappe' them into a spicy melange that will power liquid metal cooling sub-systems and optimize quantum farm access through new Astral Wi-Fi connectivity, is what's _really_ gonna make the 2023 Asus cook. Vapor chambers are sooo 3rd-dimensionally-limited.
Respect for the sheer work on this review, best bar none. You ve got a new sub ! The tips, undervolting hint, and most important the igpu video out on a specific USB c ... A piece of info that no one gives or test....
Great video. I'm getting better battery life after updating my AMD drivers from AMD, an extra 2 hours but YMMV. And I pulled off the metal plates that are attached to the intake grills. They were blocking intake by ~20%. Obviously this isn't advised but it did lower my temps a bit and the whistle fan noise is better
@@FunKaYxxD1sCO 97.83 hours. Watching RUclips nearly triples the gigawatts/hour to 262.343434 battery/plonk-units per ohm. This is due to custom cortisol-saturation and dopamine response negative-feedback loops built into the engagement algorithms of limits on speech by Alphabet companies, but helps the laptop top out at over 5,342 teraflops per battery-hour-micrometer-quantic. Hope this helps.
Nice review Josh, Just picked this up for my work laptop but it will be on an elevated laptop stand and plugged into a 32" Gaming monitor the vast majority of the time. Replacing a 2020 MSI GE75. Appreciate the detail. Ended up getting it for $1350 from BBY on an open box but literally never turned on. Should be an excellent gaming laptop.
Stuck between choice of buying this or a legion 5 pro, both can be speced with r7/3060 (legion has 140w tgp and zeph has 120, also zeph has the HS cpu) What's the better deal in your opinion.
The Legion will have just very slightly higher fps, but 20W is almost nothing. It’s absolutely not worth the increase in weight, the tradeoff in the thicker, cheap feeling plastic body, plastic trackpad, worse tuning software, worse screen vibrancy/color accuracy, worse speakers, worse battery life. It’s just not a premium laptop at all in comparison to the Zephyrus. At this point they should remove “pro” from the Legion 5 Pro. Ever since 2022 it has been really falling behind the competition. Sorry for the rant, there are just lots of better options out there!
@@JoshCravesTechany suggestions for other options then? laptops like the g15 are hard to relate with these days at a good price that is. (Around 1300ish usd)
Awesome video. Its convincing me to get a g15 over other brands/models. Waiting a few more months to hear about the next gen video cards before pulling the trigger.
After 1 day of testing it I get screen artifacts on battery power also random freezes. (not plugged in) TBH thats dissapointing :) Even tried to reinstall it and getting all official drivers.
@@kirtmanwaring3629 yes, it is more efficient. But for some reason the wattage used doing basic tasks is a little higher and it’s hard to find a source. Could even be a random driver like the Radeon driver or Wi-Fi card. There’s also the Gen4 SSD which uses a little more power. I don’t think anyone has fully figured it out yet.
Hi Josh, I just bought this piece of hardware as well here in Europe with the 240hz panel, and I wanted to ask you some questions: Did you find the chassis hot while playing? For me, it can hit 55-60°C just below the screen bezel and almost burn my fingers. I have also noticed after playing for several hours, the screen has some dead pixels that roll back after a while. Besides this, I have no other complaints about this incredible laptop, which will be very useful for my engineering studies. Good video, btw. I really appreciate all the work you're doing on this Zephyrus lineup, as you were the one who sold me the G15 with your video from last year. Thank you for this!
The area above the function keys is not meant to be touched! That is by design. If the regular keys are uncomfortably hot then that’s a different story, that shouldn’t happen. Also the screen getting dead pixels is a bit strange, but if they go away that’s good lol. I’ve never had that happen on mine. It is such a great laptop overall though, just make sure to act on anything that you feel might be a defect before your warranty expires!
were you able to run external display with USB-C on battery on Eco-mode?? for me it always says it need to be in optimised mode even i connect to the port that is connected to iGPU, battery life for me also 6-7 hrs in casual work
Hey Josh, you said in previous video that adding a 16gb ram would be a sweet spot for the laptop, so does it also applies for 2022 model or we can go with 32gb ram stick for upgrade ? What will be better?
Since each stick runs in dual channel independently, then adding a 32gb stick would be better than doing so on the 2021 model! I still stick with 24gb total but 40gb total seems to run great!
great review! im still a bit confused with the AATU, you could do an extra video on that. by the way i flashed my 3070Ti just to test it out and it worked well in gamed that didnt max out the GPU. with the 150watts bios and i think there are others out there aswell ;)
AATU is definitely confusing, but it’s nice. I will definitely make a dedicated video on it. Is there a new version of nvflash? Haven’t seen anyone do it on a Ti GPU yet. I haven’t tried yet though either.
@@JoshCravesTech i tried it. it works but i havent been testing it too long. youre limited to 200 watts so it made the system stutter when i got into the limits. maybe it works with a different powersupply or limiting the CPU
(please reply) will you be doing thr same gpu vbios mods on this laptop too knowing its AMD, because i went through all your videos but my laptop unfortunately had RX6800m g15 advantage edition. Missed out on lot of awesome stuff because there is no such community to provide mods for amd laptop gps. It will be amazing to see how that changes since the big dog Zephyrus has the all amd specs.

I was planning to get this laptop, but I heard it has sleep issues. I think people said the computer would run warm, even if they closed the screen. Does that happen to you?
I think when I’m in dGPU mode it doesn’t properly sleep, but it’s very easy to just use hibernate instead. No battery drain and it wakes up pretty quick!
@@khakers2.099 you’re exactly right. This is something that happens to many laptops and gaming laptops alike. It is indeed a Windows issue not communicating correctly with the manufacturer software
The 2021 version says the screen has both gsync and free sync premium while the 2022 version only has free sync. This difference is very important especially for gaming. If this is true, the 2021 model is a better buy for gamers.
The 2021 version does not have Gsync, not sure why it would say that. Gsync requires a mux switch. You can of course plug into a Gsync compatible monitor and run it that way. The difference is not much though between Freesync and Gsync other than the frequency range at which they operate. Even without gsync I have never noticed any tearing.
This was a surprisingly good review. So USB 4 certification should enable external GPU support right? That should enable around 10 or 15 years life for this laptop assuming the CPU and everything else holds up well.
@@JoshCravesTech after all the complaints I have seen on Reddit about ASUS laptops and board repairs I'm having second thoughts on purchasing one. Can you attest to ASUS build quality of the motherboard? Would like to see what your one looks like under the microscope and how it compares with others I've seen.
@@TartarSauceIsNotDead I can’t attest specifically to the motherboard, no. But again I think it’s just one of those things where people who have problems are going to post a lot more frequently than those who don’t have problems. You can see this on pretty much any laptop forum you visit. Usually just more posts if the laptop sells more units. I wouldn’t worry too much about it, but they offer extended warranties too for peace of mind. All I can say is I’ve had 4 Asus ROG devices for testing and daily use across 2-3 years now and they’ve all been perfect.
Is it worth upgrading from 2021 to 2022? It's so expensive so I'm hesitant, but the MUX switch sounds so good on paper. But then again I'd rather buy a PC. So it's either sell 2021 and upgrade to 2022. Or save up and buy a PC. Any advice? I love the G15 it's so compact and powerful and it looks absolutely stunning.
what would you choose between a g15 with 6800HS, RTX 3060, 24GB Ram for 1940Euro or g15 with 6800HS, RTX 3070ti, 16GB Ram for 400Euro more? (both with 1tb ssd and 1440p diplay)
Yes it will crash when undervolted too far, but you kinda have to make it crash to figure out the limit. It doesn’t actually harm the laptop in any way. Most people get between -17 to -25 with good stability.
Oh gosh, I don’t remember but I think it’s direct to the board but it will discharge the battery a bit if you’re using more wattage than what you’re supplying
Cheers Josh! I just saw this same laptop for $1199 at Best Buy with the R9 + RTX 3060 configuration. I think it's a very good price, but what makes me worry is the reviews where they mention how lousy the QC is. What do you think?
Yeah I got unlucky. My keyboard went out after 3 months. Luckily it was still under warranty and I’ve had no problems with my new one. Ram upgrade makes it even better.
So yes and no. People have done lots of things to help their battery life. There are now even some replacement softwares for Armoury Crate, helping people get around what the 2021 model got. However if you want the best battery life you’d still need to go for the G14.
Hey, I know this video is old but have you had any problem with the keyboard (keys stop working)? I was looking on eBay and seems like Asus laptops have keyboard problems more than other brands. Seems like an uncommon point of failure.
You mentioned that you bought it from bestbuy, did you trade your previous one in? Or did you just sell it on marketplace or something? I’m debating where to sell my prebuilt pc so I can have enough to buy this laptop :p

You could theoretically connect at least 3 displays, one from each output. However, depending on the resolution and refresh rates, you could likely connect more using a high bandwidth hub of some sort
I had the 2021 Legion 7i and my biggest problem with it was how noisy it was. Fans were always going, even in silent mode. The difference in performance will not be too much. I think the 2022 G15 is a better deal at those prices.
I plan on buying the ryzen 6800hs and rtx3060 version of this thing and I can't find a respectable performance review anywhere, do you have any idea how that would perform in triple A games?
@@JoshCravesTech so it same less perfomance as rog zephyrus rtx 3070 2021 model? Could you please advice which one is better rog zephyrus rtx 3070 2021 or rog zephyrus rtx 3060 2022. Both have the same price.
@@willykanzert2461 the 3060 with a mux switch will only be a little bit behind the 3070 without a mux switch. I’d guess maybe 5-10% behind. Except in some games that require more vram it will fall behind. So it comes down to if you need more vram (3070) and maybe you use an external monitor to make up for the lack of a mux switch. Or if you need a better CPU with great performance still, and a webcam/mux switch/DDR5 RAM/Gen4 SSD/USB4.
@@JoshCravesTech Thank you so much for answer. I don't want buy external gaming monitor cause I already have the office monitor, so I will go with 3060 model 2022.
Do you have any GPU fan speed problems in manual mode? In my case (most of the time) GPU fan stays at 0 rpm, even if temperatures are high and fan curve is at 100%. Only way to get it working is use "Turbo" or "Performance" mode. Seems like software issue.
@@JoshCravesTech I tried that. No difference. Seems like some bug in bios/firmware. Only happens if I have monitor plugged in (HDMI) before turning on computer. If no external monitor is plugged in, it works. Thanks anyway for the hint
I may. Luckily most of the optimizations are the same or very similar! No noticeable backlight bleed on my unit. And yes the 3080 overclocks about the same!
@@zakam766 Can you exchange the G15 for another one? The 3080 is a lot more powerful than the 6800S, but the G14 of course has a better screen and is a little more portable. So for gaming and temps, the G15 wins, but for portability and display, the G14 wins.
Hey man love your video, its why I went for the g15 2022 3080. Temp is pretty good around 75C and up to around 80C after 2hrs of gaming but somehow I cant get it to hit 240fps in Valorant, CS, R6 no matter what I do. Drop the settings and res in game only decreases gpu power consumption, tried everything with Ghelper, Nvidia control panel, Windows graphics but still no luck, tried HWiNFO and Msi afterburner but everything is normal. All the review videos I watched hit 300+ fps in these games but mine only around 140-200 (180 most of the time) Im still learning English so I hope you can read this easily.
Valorant is very dependent on your CPU. Did you disable cpu turbo boost by chance? Or did you lower your CPU wattage at all? Is your mux switch active? Is there any setting in Valorant that unlocks fps, like is it hitting an fps limit? I know Apex Legends for example you have to add a setting in the launch options to increase the fps limit.
I've seen people mention that the freesync capabilities while on the laptop display are disabled when the mux switch is in use. Is this true? I've also heard that it doesn't matter in games on a 15inch monitor and that you can't see screen tearing on a 165Hz panel. Just asking because I don't own the laptop so I can't test it myself.
Just wanted to thank you for including a performance on battery section. It is nearly impossible to get this type of information from other reviews, and it is one of the main factors when I purchase a laptop. Your review has put this high on my purchase list

Jarod's tests also show that the laptop is very soft.
how much different is this from l5pro ?
The most indepth review of this laptop out there. Excellent work. I've had this laptop for about a month now and aside from the bug it had with turbo mode I've had a great experience, it is the perfect laptop. (For anyone having thr turbo mode bug just use manual, performance or silent until they fix it)
Agreed! Thanks for watching! 👍
Thanks, i switched over from a Legion 5 Pro with a 6800H 3070 to this for the same price, this and your older legion vs Zephyrus g15 video really helped me get perspective.
That’s awesome!!
It was one of the most honest and valuable reviews I have seen in a while.
Thanks so much!
15:53, I have seen many MSI users who used coolerboost complaining about their fans failure . Maxing out fan will damage it sooner .
Great vid! You should do a full guide of everything you should do to a G15 to get the best performance
Damn, dude. This was a hell of a review. Found a great deal on the 3080 version of this model and went for it based on your review. Thanks for being so thorough in this video!
was searching everywhere for a good review on this laptop. thank you so much
Most reviewers compare laptop in terms of raw performance which is not correct imo. A laptop is a portable machine and efficiency is top priority in every department. If someone wants brute raw performance just build a desktop at half the cost of laptop and remote to that for heavy tasks. You mention it very clearly. Portability, battery life and performance efficiency are highlights of this laptop.
Exactly! Thanks so much
Looking forward to your review of the next gen man!
I AM SOLD.....* STAMPED*
@@sub-vibes its an awesome machine, no complaint. it used to restart a lot during heavy load when it was new. I think ASUS have fixed it in new drivers, it doesn't happen anymore.
Hey I'm planning to get one now (the Rtx 3080 version) over the new 40 series cards. Can you give an update about your satisfaction and also how is the battery backup (cuz I'm a student)?
Hi Josh,
By any reason, I was recommending some important steps on this comment section for a bigger performance with your laptops and got deleted.
Most people love the holes, including myself. It’s unique and not too flashy.
@@friedmandesigns I actually mostly agree with this.
Such a helpful review and user guide! My G15 will be here on Tuesday :)
What is Ymmv
@@babitasaha6655 your mileage may vary
@@ItsNotAProblem alright
How much battery do you get just watching video streaming. RUclips, Amazon ect.
You got an awesome deal! Good stuff, enjoy!
Very detailed review. Nice to see you still loving your g15
Stuck between choice of buying this or a legion 5 pro, both can be speced with r7/3060 (legion has 140w tgp and zeph has 120, also zeph has the HS cpu)
What's the better deal in your opinion.

How much was it?
You made me very happy with my 2021 model, if only for the battery life. I hope whatever needs to get sorted happens quick.
Yeah, if battery is the biggest concern then the 2021 model is the one to keep!
@@JoshCravesTech It's strange to me because the new processor’s supposed to be more efficient right? Is it just not optimized or something?
New to pc gaming and bought one of these. Seems like I made a decent purchase. Coooo
You are the king of laptop reviews.
Thank you, I appreciate that 😭
Hey Josh, will you be uploading an updated optimization guide for the 2022 Zephyrus G15?
were you able to run external display with USB-C on battery on Eco-mode?? for me it always says it need to be in optimised mode even i connect to the port that is connected to iGPU, battery life for me also 6-7 hrs in casual work
Hey Josh, you said in previous video that adding a 16gb ram would be a sweet spot for the laptop, so does it also applies for 2022 model or we can go with 32gb ram stick for upgrade ? What will be better?
Since each stick runs in dual channel independently, then adding a 32gb stick would be better than doing so on the 2021 model! I still stick with 24gb total but 40gb total seems to run great!
@@JoshCravesTech Thanks Sir🤗
Can you post all your manual settings in your armoury crate?

great review! im still a bit confused with the AATU, you could do an extra video on that. by the way i flashed my 3070Ti just to test it out and it worked well in gamed that didnt max out the GPU. with the 150watts bios and i think there are others out there aswell ;)

Pretty sure that's a windows sleep state issue not specific to this laptop
@@khakers2.099 you’re exactly right. This is something that happens to many laptops and gaming laptops alike. It is indeed a Windows issue not communicating correctly with the manufacturer software
Hi, did you buy it? If yes, please share your comment.
Exactly!
Just keep mux on for when gaming and plugged in. And swap to eco after unplug and fully charged. It does add more performance
what would you choose between a g15 with 6800HS, RTX 3060, 24GB Ram for 1940Euro or g15 with 6800HS, RTX 3070ti, 16GB Ram for 400Euro more? (both with 1tb ssd and 1440p diplay)
Would you be able to share your fan curve via link or something?
Such an informative review 😘
Have you experienced any crashes, bugs etc. after undervolting the laptop, or with last years G15 during your usage?
Yes it will crash when undervolted too far, but you kinda have to make it crash to figure out the limit. It doesn’t actually harm the laptop in any way. Most people get between -17 to -25 with good stability.
@@JoshCravesTech That's good to know, thanks! Btw. great detailed video, loved it!
Really the kind of review I want to see more often
Great work mate ! And thanks for going deep into the explanations and analysis of this laptop 👌

Did you try advanced optimus? It gets the MUX functionality but you don't have to restart everytime with that.
Unfortunately the G15 doesn’t have that
Awesome video! hmm, do the PD type-c charging in this laptop directly supply to the board or will only charging the battery?
Oh gosh, I don’t remember but I think it’s direct to the board but it will discharge the battery a bit if you’re using more wattage than what you’re supplying
@@JoshCravesTech Thanks for the reply! I just brought one for myself. xD
Did we ever figure out the battery 🔋 issue? Really need a laptop with a working mux to save battery
Amazing overview of G15! I wonder is there any stability issues from switching the boot drive to another drive which I assumed u did.

@@JoshCravesTech Okay thanks mate.

does the best buy version have international warranty?
Nice vid! Do you recc taking 2021 3080 Legion 7i at ~$2350 or 2022 G15 3070ti at ~$2000?
I had the 2021 Legion 7i and my biggest problem with it was how noisy it was. Fans were always going, even in silent mode. The difference in performance will not be too much. I think the 2022 G15 is a better deal at those prices.
Great review Josh! But how about the display, specifically with a low nits? What if you want to work on cafe or a building with lots of windows?
It’s plenty bright for most uses. Even with the sun coming in my windows I haven’t really had any major issues seeing what’s on the screen.
I plan on buying the ryzen 6800hs and rtx3060 version of this thing and I can't find a respectable performance review anywhere, do you have any idea how that would perform in triple A games?
Expect about 15-20% less performance than how mine did here
@@JoshCravesTech so it same less perfomance as rog zephyrus rtx 3070 2021 model?

Do you have any GPU fan speed problems in manual mode? In my case (most of the time) GPU fan stays at 0 rpm, even if temperatures are high and fan curve is at 100%. Only way to get it working is use "Turbo" or "Performance" mode. Seems like software issue.
That does seem like a software issue. Maybe use the Armoury Crate uninstaller from Asus and try reinstalling the latest version manually
@@JoshCravesTech I tried that. No difference. Seems like some bug in bios/firmware. Only happens if I have monitor plugged in (HDMI) before turning on computer. If no external monitor is plugged in, it works. Thanks anyway for the hint

Correct. I have personally not noticed any screen tearing when the mux switch is active however
