    1. The "VRAM modules" that I thought were left without thermal putty at 20:50 are actually the LPDDR5X RAM modules, which explains why there's no pad/putty on them, so that is actually normal.
    2. There is finally a 32GB version of the 4070 model in the U.S.! Only bad thing is, it’s more expensive. But you get the fancy new AMD Strix Point CPU: www.bestbuy.com/site/6583376.p?skuId=6583376
    3. I’m hearing that mid-year units (manufacturer date May 2024 in the info I was given) have tighter hinges with less wobble and trackpads with less rattle.

    Absolutely STELLAR content! Especially the part for thermals! This is exactly what I wanted. A lot of creators tell us that thermals on the laptop are fine, but when we go on forums, everyone's complaining about thermals during actual use because their ambient room temps were a little different, or because thermals during benchmarks weren't (for whatever reason) representing thermals during gaming.

    Thx for the review! I will look into the other fan software that seems to be really good.
    Just bought the G16 version with a 4070, and luckily with 32 GB RAM.
    I agree that the screen wobble is okay, not bad or cheap. I really enjoyed it so far. The three things that I do not like (so much; minor stuff), is that blueish look of the OLED panel when light is hitting it, inconsitent fan noise in medium non-gaming utilisation (an external display seems to activate the nvidia gpu which cause the fan to kick in silent mode every 2 minutes. I created a profile which stops the third fan in med utilisation, but leaves on the fan at ultra low speeds, which works good), and lastly I prefer rough keycaps, these are kinda slippy. Generally this laptop is really awesome.

    Great review. I personally still prefer a thicker laptop and have possibility to use full 175W power of 4090 when needed (125 vs 175W in 4090 is huge performance loss) and use "silent" mode to play with about same performance as this G16 but with A LOT less loud fans because of better cooling. This G16 does not give me this possibility but it's still great laptop. I hope we will see 3nm CPU and GPU in Windows laptops and have more performance/less loud fans in case like this G16. This laptop is first step to this world.

    • @JoshCravesTech
      @JoshCravesTech  4 месяца назад +2

      I totally understand your take. That is a definitely cool use-case for larger laptops. While this does perform about like a full-powered 4080, it's nice to have about that level of performance in just the silent mode of a thicker laptop.

      Yeah, I have a little comparison to it at the end in Final Thoughts there, it just doesn’t strike me as a great competitor when the G16 already exists. Except for the upgradeable RAM. But everything else about it is just… fine. It’s not a bad laptop by any means, it’s just bigger/heavier, has a power-hungry CPU that barely performs better than the G16’s, eats battery, discharges battery while gaming, has fewer tuning options, worse display, worse speakers. Again not a bad laptop, but it’s typically the same price as the G16 in the U.S., so it kinda lost my interest. If I got it on a good deal then I may review it though

    • @JoshCravesTech
      @JoshCravesTech  4 месяца назад

      @@dakotaconcepcion5398 I would not even consider the Blade 14 in 2024 to be honest. It was a great laptop when it first released a few years ago, but Razer has done nothing to improve it over the years. The G14 is miles ahead now. The Blade doesn't even have Advanced Optimus, so you have to reboot the laptop every time you want to use the mux switch. It's also bigger in all dimensions, heavier, more expensive usually, basic IPS panel, worse keyboard with shallow travel distance, bad speakers. The 140W GPU is also kind of a sham, because they know it will never actually hit 140W on that GPU, it only hits like 100W because it's a 4060/4070 anyway, so they perform about the same. And the G14 always wins in battery life. And software customization is much better on the G14, with a lot more control over fans, battery tweaks, temps, undervolting, etc.

    • @JoshCravesTech
      @JoshCravesTech  4 месяца назад +1

      @@dakotaconcepcion5398 Yeah, the Blade will win in frame rate and because it's thicker it will likely be a little cooler as well, but as long as the G14 isn't throttling then it should be fine. "Significantly hotter" makes me wonder if you have a defect though, because the temps should be fairly close. You should be seeing like 75-85C on the GPU and 78-90C on the CPU on the G14. And the difference in fps shouldn't be huge either. Maybe 5-10%. Also depends on the resolution you're running at. 1800p is completely unnecessary on the G14 and I don't know why they even went with that resolution. The first thing you should do is turn it down to 1600p in games for more fps and no difference in clarity.

I don't neeeeeed a laptop right now, but I'm missing out on play time when I'm away on travel as my current laptop can't play Helldivers and similar.

    • @JoshCravesTech
      @JoshCravesTech  4 месяца назад +1

      Yeah, it'll be at least February next year before we see RTX 50 series, so that would be about 9 months that you'd have to wait depending on stock availability. If you can wait that long then absolutely do it because there will probably be some awesome improvements across the board. But if you need a laptop right now, then this is definitely one of the best around. You could also buy now and sell secondhand later, although you'll definitely come out losing a decent chunk of change going that route as it depreciates.

  • @verybaguette
    @verybaguette 4 месяца назад +1

    It's true about rtx4070 model that you dont need to run manual mode to increase performance. There is so little fps difference in running manual mode and so much more fan noise that it is just not worth it. To me, it is sad to see both balanced and turbo modes having 95-100 degrees CPU temp in games (I have core 7 ultra, rtx4070, 32gb model). Also my model shows very poor battery life, about 4 hours of web browsing with everything set to best battery life: windows best power efficiency mode, nvidia gpu turned off, silent mode in armoury crate and half the brightness - and it still consumes 20-25 watts. I blame windows for this, because my g16 came with DOS and I installed windows myself. I tried to minimize the effect of self installed windows by updating all drivers and reinstalling it twice, but it didn't help. If you have any idea why my unit has battery life 2.5 worse than every review on youtube please let me know.

    • @JoshCravesTech
      @JoshCravesTech  4 месяца назад

      Sometimes having hardware acceleration disabled in your browser can make things worse for battery if you did that. Check/disable any unnecessary startup tasks and background processes, use G-Helper. It should NOT be using 20-25W consistently on battery, that indicates a problem somewhere with your Windows or drivers or something. The 95-100C CPU is also not normal in games especially on the Ultra 7. Maybe if the CPU is using 50W or more then sure, but if it’s at like 35W or something then there’s no way it should be getting that high unless you have faulty Liquid Metal application from the factory!

      Good question! Yes, it can. I'll touch on it in the video, but I'll go ahead and spoil that it's 1000% not worth doing on the G14 😅 Although I set a world record, the temperatures went through the roof! It does NOT handle additional wattage well at all. But the previous world record was done by just a simple overclock, basically matching the Blade 14 at 140W, so all that extra wattage doesn't really get put to good use anyway.

    Straight up masterpiece of a review. I bought the 4090 version and was a bit disappointed with the Armoury crate "bloatware" - I heard someone call it that haha. Tysm for the G-helper shoutout and walkthrough video you made - it has solidified my initial happiness with this product.
    Question: Before downloading G helper (yesterday actually) my pc hit a temp. of 100 degrees on the CPU, is that acceptable? Do I need to be worried? I would like for this PC to last through the next 4 years of my education, so I do not want to overly stress this amazing machine when I'm just "playing" on it. Do I need to open it up and maybe check if ASUS assembled it correctly? (I'm not that tech savvy to already know how to do that, but I can learn if needed. :)
    Again - I can't stress this enough: What a damn amazing review, thank you from the bottom of my heart for this hard work you've put into the review. (At 1:00:05 there is a typo "peakers" instead of "speakers".
    Thaaank you for the review (I basically watched it twice, it was that good!)

    • @JoshCravesTech
      @JoshCravesTech  3 месяца назад

      Thanks for watching! Also thank you for pointing out the typo, good catch! But yeah, your CPU hitting 100C is actually normal. It will occasionally happen, and these CPU's are rated to go that high without problems. The Alienware X16 R2 for example pushes this exact same CPU to 102C even for extended periods. But most of the time, your CPU should be in the 80's or 90's. There is no problem with that as long as you aren't experiencing big/constant frame drops.

Also, does this laptop come with any bloatware (getting it at bestbuy), and are you optimistic with this laptop being future-proof? Thanks, great video btw

    • @JoshCravesTech
      @JoshCravesTech  25 дней назад

      @@spaceman0808 the 4070 is unfortunately a pretty big dropoff in performance and a decent bit worse in temps. There’s about a 30-40% increase in fps from 4070 to 4080, it’s a lot! And the Vapor chamber does a really good job at taming that cpu especially, compared to the 4070 model. So the 4080 model I’d consider to be future proof. The 4070 model, not so future proof, but still good for a few years I’d say. And no, no bloatware other than what some people might consider bloat from Windows!

      @@JoshCravesTech yeah but for me i need a max of 5.5 to 6 hours of battery life, rest of the time i will use the laptop pretty much always plugged in to the power. So i am Hanging on the cliff with this one as the legion also provides around 6 hours of battery in light work.
      Also how much of power drop is there realistically, between 'i9-14900HX' and Ultra '9 processor 185H' for me as i would be using my laptop for After Effects.

    • @JoshCravesTech
      @JoshCravesTech  4 месяца назад +1

      @@shobhitkeshri8282 I would probably put money on it that most people would not notice the difference in performance between the two CPU’s especially at the lower wattage that the Legion runs it at. Those HX CPU’s need to be able to sustain 80W+ to show any benefit and that Legion is too slim to do that for such a power-hungry CPU so they end up performing about the same. But yeah, I’m not sure that even 6 hours would be possible with light tasks. Maybe it could be, but you’d have to definitely do some tweaks to get it there! Both would be great for After Effects though of course.

    I have the 3 fan 4070 version and mostly i am also very happy. Speakers, build quality, display, performance. All awesome. What I do not like is yes the vapor chamber missing on the 4070, but the 500€ extra was not worth it and on silent i can not hear it unless the laptop sits on the bed and the intakes are covered. I have some trouble with armory crate and configutation for the lighting, smart charging etc. the 4 macro keys do not always work as I wish. I have troubles using virtual machines on my win11 which should be an issue of windows and not the zephyrus. What is most annoying is the lagging mouse pointer on silent mode. That is not due to reduced refresh rate as animations are still smooth while I dont have heavy tasks running. After some time moving the mouse it gets back to normal

      That's good to hear! Yet another person with no issues with the 3 fans, it seems to be more common to have a good experience now than a bad one with the fans. However that is weird about the mouse pointer. It shouldn't be lagging like that. Make sure turbo boost isn't disabled or something in Silent mode. Intel CPU's do not do well with disabling turbo boost which slows everything to a crawl.

    Great review. Subbing! Question. Looking for all around device for productivity like programming and video editing as well as gaming. Been looking at the G16, Legion 7i, Legion Pro 7, and Razer 16. Any suggestions? Maybe something I didn’t list? My problem with G16 is no upgrading ability to RAM or storage. I do love the battery life on the G16 though.

    • @JoshCravesTech
      @JoshCravesTech  4 месяца назад +1

      So I give a comparison to the Legion 7i (the pros and cons list) at 1:02:59 and Blade 16 toward the end there and I touched more on the Blade 16 in the design portion as well, and Display section. But yeah the Legion 7i is cool and all, but it's bigger in all dimensions, heavier, worse battery life, low color gamut display (not good for video editing!!), worse speakers, CPU runs hot, etc. so for your case I would not consider that one.
      The Legion Pro 7i is great, but only the 2024 model has 100% DCI-P3 color gamut. The 2023 has a low color gamut so I'd automatically say no to that one for video. The 2024 model is good though, just VERY thick, heavy, loud, and bad battery life. They prioritize performance over all else, so everything is plastic, including the trackpad (I'm holding a grudge against them for that), speakers are bad, but they do at least have swappable ram.
      The G16 has a second storage slot so you can add an extra m.2 in there, you can see it around 18:15 in the video. And if you buy the 32GB model then you're good for years. 16GB is still the "standard", but it might get a little restrictive in video editing for sure though, especially if the footage is 4K and you're doing other things like browsing.
      The Blade 16 is pretty similar in build quality, is upgradeable, but it's quite a bit heavier and thicker, has terrible battery life, the CPU is not efficient, and it has nowhere near the amount of control over your power limits, thermals, fan noise, etc. The 2024 does have the same display though as the G16 which is nice, and the 2023 model has mini-LED which is also awesome. Of all of those options, I'd still go for the G16 but my 2nd choice would be the Blade.

      They will honestly both be about the same. The only major differences would be of course maybe like 5-10% more GPU performance from the G16 because the additional wattage and slightly lower resolution (1600p vs 1800p but they both look the same in person) and the higher refresh rate of 240Hz on the G16. The G14 is of course even more portable and lightweight though, so if that's important to you and you like a 14" display then go for the G14.

    @volcalstone 4 месяца назад

    Other than the storage being 2TB vs 1TB do you think it's worth the extra $600 for the 4090 over the 4080 model?
    I really want the Blade 16 but it's crazy expensive vs the G16. I'm a fan of both companies but Asus has a better package all the way around imo. I already have a 4090 rig at home so I don't care about FPS as much. I just want something portable with an OLED screen with nice speakers that could play games with great graphics, it doesn't need to be the best. I just don't want to spend so much on basically a non improvement CPU and GPU year if you know what I mean. 😊
    My current labtop is a 2022 Flow X16 3060. I still love it even tho the GPU isn't the best. Everything else like build quality makes up for it. The IPS display with a glossy screen is better than most matte screens imo. Also I'm not a fan of mini LED screens. Had a monitor with it and it just isn't my thing even tho it's bright like crazy. OLED is the way to go imo for any displays. I got 2 TVs that are OLED and one of them is a QD-OLED. I can't wait for labtops to come out with QD-OLEDs though. That's when I will upgrade again. I subbed btw cause you're thorough reviews are pretty awesome.

      The 4090 is not worth the extra $600 tbh. Unless budget just isn't a concern, I'd recommend the 4080. You're only losing out on maybe 10-15% fps at the most. I've seen the differences be as small as 5% in some games, so I don't think that permits an extra $600 😂
      But yeah the Flow is an AMAZING laptop, and if they had a 4080/4090 version then it would probably still be my daily driver. It's just the 4060/4070 are SO far behind that it's almost laughable, and sad.

      Just Josh also acknowledged in his latest video that the G16 fan noise is not as bad as he initially reviewed, I guess thanks to a bios update. His Yoga review is a little… idk, after watching more reviews from actual users and messaging people, I compiled that list. Worse battery life, worse balanced mode, fan noise is higher in performance mode on the Yoga, fan noise in general is VERY similar on both in Silent/Balanced mode, temps are also very similar on both, but that CPU gets up to 100C+ on the Yoga. However, either way I wouldn’t say thermals are an issue at all on either one. People are experiencing battery discharge on the Yoga when gaming, no HDMI 2.1 is unacceptable to me, and no ports tied to the dGPU at all is just odd, worse speakers. Also Yoga is bigger in all dimensions and heavier. To me that’s just too many cons when the G16 is actually cheaper here in the US! But in your case the Yoga is significantly cheaper so it might actually be worth it for you 😅

I hope you're able to keep creating far into the future, and I'm sure when I eventually get a new laptop (already considering the 2029 G16) this is where I'll be coming back to.

I personally wanted an in between laptop where I had good gaming and portability, while also having good battery life, so I recently bought the 2023 G14 4080 (it was on sale, or else I would've gotten the 4090 - thanks to your in depth video!) It has more than enough power to play triple-A titles and stays cool the WHOLE time.
    Battery life is 10hrs while on power saving mode.

I can slide it to 105W + 20W boost. The 4070 is maxed out at 115W so thats kinda weird but the increase in perfomance is about 10% (quick tests in furmark). Anyway its a fantastic laptop. GREAT AND SUPER ACCURATE REVIEW!!! Im one of those who has tweaked my G16 to consistently get 12-13 hours of web browsing, emails and typing some word docs when I have a full charge. The MUX switch has a lot to do with it. The battery is so good I typically leave mine charged to 80% and get about 10 ish hours of use. If I go on a trip I charge to 100%.

      @@DZ-cq3gs biggest thing is getting rid of all Asus stuff completely and installing g-helper. Then permanently kill all Asus services. Set g-helper to silent mode and eco mode. Set windows poer plan to best efficiency always when unplugged. Tweak the power plan in the control panel to have processor minimum at 1% and maximum at 99%. Very important to set any web browsers to power saving and memory saving modes. Set Intel graphics command center to best efficiency. There may be more but doing this got me around 6.5-7 watt total power draw at 50% brightness.

      @@DZ-cq3gs This should do it.
      1. Uninstall all asus stuff and stop all services.
      2. Install G Helper
      3. Set G helper to eco and silent mode.
      4. Set all your web browsers to power saver and memory saver (this is a big one)
      5. Set windows power mode in settings to best efficiency
      6. Modify the balanced power plan in the control panel to have a maximum processor state of 99% on battery and minimum of 1% on battery. Plugged in keep it at 5% and 100% min/max.
      7. Limit your notifications that can come in.
      8. In windows settings set battery saver to come on at 100% or Always. I think the default is 20% or something.
      9. Set refresh rate to 60hz
      10. Lower screen brightness to 50%
      11. If you have the OLED version use dark mode and set all your apps to dark mode.
      12. Make sure you have the latest updates and bios as the battery wasnt as good when I first got the laptop until I did some updates.
      13. Kill any other services that may be running in the background that you dont need.
      14. No keyboard lighting and no slash lighting.
      15. Check your startup apps and disable anything you dont absulutely need to start when the computer starts.

      @@JoshCravesTech Still thinking about what laptop to get. In G-helper, can you make a profile where the fans never turn on? And if so, do the fans actually stay off? The Legion I'm using right now has the option to set the fans off on the curve but it doesn't actually work, and I want to avoid that situation.

    • @JoshCravesTech
      @JoshCravesTech  3 месяца назад

      @@Reaper31292 yes, there is a build of G-Helper where the fans can be turned completely off, at your own risk. Obviously a terrible idea in Turbo mode or something, but if you have it at something like the default silent profile then it should be fine.
