My son who is 8 is now obsessed with being a goalie. We watch your videos together and we both love them so much. He just played in a tournament yesterday and had a 94% save percentage. Can you please make a video for him and the other kids? Beginner tips, equipment suggestions, what you wish you knew, encouragement. Thanks from a goalie Dad.
Not impressed pal
Equipment wise it’s expensive. Hockey is an expensive sport and goalie is even more expensive. But when you are young and small warrior is a good brand to have. As you grow older maybe like 11-12 switch to something like Bauer because warrior isn’t made for higher quality shots and will easily break. Bauer sticks are pretty good for a lighter stick. Same with Bauer helmets they are excellent and last many years. Vaughn makes newer style pads with hood straps and holds. Bauer pads are quite minimalistic and have very few straps. Stuff I wish I knew a while ago: stretch, yoga is your best friend if you can become a flexible goalie it will greatly help in desperation moments. It’s boring to start but it’s good when you do. Although he’s a bit young maybe working out shortly. Cardio is also big, you need stamina and endurance. Lastly, core work will help your stance stay close together and improve recovery. The last point is practice. As much as you can practice, you only become better from practice. Also getting into games, you see more shots and learn new stuff playing new teams
Nothing special my man
Be very proficient at goalie skating style, he’s young and is he playing with forward skates? Totally different with no rocker, great advice above and I suggest any ice time he can get playing pick up as defense is minimal and he will face more shots, any time he can do pick up or stick time and face shots is great and usually free for goalies.
If your kid had a 94% save percentage then your kid doesn’t need tips from trav
Dude, you were hilarious all hopped up on pain meds! Seriously, here's to a speedy recovery. Surgery makes us realize how much we take health for granted.
That wasn't even pain meds, it was the anestitc haha THANK YOU BROTHER.
Modern surgery is so amazing. that quick turnaround will see you ready much sooner. Glad to see you still motivated.
I think the real motivation will come when I see what I can do after the recovery is done!
It's great to see you getting your body right. I had a similar problem with my teammates a while back with a knee injury. They saw me walking around and not limping and thought I was faking. I didn't need surgery in the end, but I needed a lot of physiotherapy. I came back stronger and healthier, you help the team by getting healthy.
They will never understand until they experience the injury themselves :)
Let it heal brother, looks like your on the road back. Glad your well. Can't wait to see you on skates
i can't wait to be on skates soon!
Good to hear about your healing journey following your surgery. Best of luck during your physio.
Thank you brother for the kind wishes :)
Can only imagine how hard blow to yourself it has been, as you have described and shown in the previous videos, when you have been in front of the mirror admitting it first to yourself that surgery is the needed thing and after that opening up the whole story to the team management who some months ago have signed you. Great to see you getting the work in so soon but stay patient and give huge rest as well ;) All the best Trav for getting back on track!
I hope they understand and even if they don't, I finally got the problem fixed and I am no longer in chronic pain. I's what I wanted.
Sending prayers for a speedy recovery!
Much appreciated bob!
Skating in June will be an awesome birthday gift for you, my friend. Keep at and cheers to a speedy recovery!
hahah if I came be 100% for june that would be beautiful
You definitely made the right decision! You will come back better than ever and I cant wait to see you playing healthy. Good luck with the recovery.
Thank you for the kind wishes my friend!
Good luck in your recovery Trav. Hopefully see you back on the ice soon.
Looking forward to sharing that this summer!
Can't wait to see you back between the pipes next season. Wishing you a speedy recovery bud, keep moving forward !
Thank you brother :)
Great documentary on your journey! Glad to see you on the road to recovery, and I'm looking forward to seeing what's next for you! And while it's a long shot for any number of reasons, if you end up playing for the Rochester Amerks, I'll be at as many games as I can to cheer you on. But I'm in your corner wherever you end up!
Thank you brother. I tried my best to tell the story to it's fullest.
Glad the surgery went well and that you're feeling better. Can't wait to see your improvement next season.
I can't wait to start improving again!
Glad everything went well with your surgery. And can’t wait to see you back on the ice.
I can't wait to share it with you when I'm skating again brother
I love the comeback from the surgery
It'll be months but I'm looking forward to it as well!
Hope you have a speedy recovery. Keep fighting for your dream!
thank you Jordan for the kind wishes :)
Hope to see you on the ice very soon Trav hope you have a very speedy recovery
Thank you very much Zach :)
Another great update Trav. You won’t know yourself when u get back on the ice. I know the pain and the struggle of the rehab. Looking forward to the next instalment.
All the best from down under.
HAHAH I hope so. To be able to feel like a different goalie would be game changing
Keep working man, been watching since Lundar the vlogs give me entertainment every time I watch.
Thank you for sticking around with me for so long brother :)
I’ve had this surgery 3 times in Canada and a fourth one by Dr Philippon in Vail. The US guy is one of the world’s leading hip preservation and pioneered new techniques. Also his rehab program is night and day better than the stuff you get in Canada. Hopefully you had the passive motion machine to prevent scar tissue as well get on a bike 20 min twice a day. Take it slow, don’t put too much weight about 20lb. Putting the foot off the ground is actually worse for the hip and the hip flexor. Don’t overload the hip and don’t rush it! If you get some pain pull back and let it settle. You will return to action and hope the hip is finally fixed.
No idea where VAIL is haha thank you for the advice my friend :) all the best
good luck with the recovery, your a rockstar.
Thank you snoop!
🙏 can’t wait to see you back in June praying for a quick recovery
I can't wait either man. Can't come soon enough!
I can't believe how fast you were up and about after surgery. I'm glad things are going well on that front. I'm also happy for you and your lady, idk how you got that lucky but she seems to be a keeper. I ordered a set of ball coverings. Hope it helps you afford a Tesla one day. Much love and keep up the content. Even if you aren't playing you make your videos very enjoyable. Been watching for years and don't plan on stopping.
iT'S be a fast and smooth recovery so far my friend. Thanks for watching. :)
Awesome video man. I have exact same surgery coming up in 2 weeks. On both sides. Good luck in ur recovery
Goodluck and hope my surgery recaps can give you some guidance :)
Great video! Lots of interesting stuff especially as i'm dealing with my own hip impingement currently. Best of luck with the recovery!
How bad is your impingement?
It’s fairly bad. Have to take an doctor prescribed anti inflammatory before every icetime and constantly do mobility and physio. I’ve been told for a while that it’s only due to muscle imbalance but I’ve been doing physio for a long time. Wish I didn’t have to deal with it at 18 years old. Check out the video I made on it!
Glad to see you're well on your way to normalcy. Keep up the great work and looking forward to seeing your return to the ice. Take care Trav! Peace!
I look forward to it as well. Thank you for all the love brother
hey travis got the same surgery on both hips about a year ago and even though it was a hard recovery it was absolutely worth it! stay the course big guy!
Are you back playing again?
Keep grinding, Trav. Taking care of yourself is important. You'll be back in no time!
Im stoked to share it with yo soon my friend!
Hey Travis, I was not caught up on your videos. I was so glad to see you sign tbe deal with Motor City and felt for ya when you had to let then know about the injury.
Happy that you could get this injury fixed and hope you are back in the league next season!
Rest and deal with the physio so you can get back to goalie training.
All the best for this year and for the 23-24 season!
Thank you sir and all the best to you :)
Glad u got ur surgery. I tore my labrum too and ik the pinching ur talking about so I’m glad you got it fixed. You’re comeback will be great, trust the process.
Its a brutal pinching pain hey?
You are correct, you will be back even better than before! Heal brother!!
see you soon man
Glad to hear all went well. Speedy recovery.
Thank you stevie!
hope the hip recovery is going good and thanks for sending the hockey cards all the way to Australia
Thanks for picking up a set :)
trav ppl don’t understand how u felt so u did whats best for you LETS GO TRAV
Especially the pain!
So got a short story for you bud, last night I went to watch an AHL game, I actually got to watch my favorite NHL tendie ever Aaron Dell it was an amazing experience and I honestly wouldn't have paid much attention to the goalie if it wasn't for stumbling on your videos, watching you with the falcons and trying out for the kings was amazing, it been super awesome watching you grow as a player. Hope recovery comes swiftly buddy
Thats amazing man. Well happy to be apart of your hockey love :)
glade things are looking good. Keep working hard and you will be back on the ice in no time. Cheers.
These next 2-3 months will fly by I believe
Goalie dad here. Son plays in Finland. Heal up and come back 1000% stronger. We are all cheering you on and your career rise. God Bless.
Thank you brother!
My bro I hope you heal fast that’s crazy you were playing through that you made the right decision by getting surgery it was for the best much love and respect homie
I did my best, but my best will be now possible with the surgery done!
Hey Trav, you made the right choice. Now just follow what you need to do in order to get back out there and kick ass next season. Keep ya head up and push through. Hope recovery is smooth for you.
No asses will be kissed but maybe kicked ;)
@@trav4oilers updated properly
LOL "There's dog sh** on the stairs." Good luck to you - sounds like your surgery was pretty successful. My hips are wrecked and both need replacement. I had a similar surgery to yours on my right hip in 2013, but my labrum was too shredded to repair, so the surgeon just cut half of it out. At least my range of motion on that side is better now, but I get a lot pain in my hip and back because there's not much cushion or lubrication in that joint. My left hip is trash and has very little range of motion like you showed at the beginning of the video. After seeing this I googled "goalie after hip replacement" and the results are surprisingly encouraging, so maybe I'll get back in the crease one day. Thanks for the content. Again, best of luck to you, and maybe beef up your pilates regimen.
HAHAH glad you enjoyed that part. Hope all this was able to help you brother!
Getting this same surgery on both hips from playing goalie. It was great to see what the recovery and rehab look like. Good luck next season.
Thanks man and goodluck with your surgery :)
Good job VIA......best of luck Trav
VIA coming to the rescue so I can rehab properly
Good luck with your recovery
Thank you Owen :)
Hey trav keep it up you will be back in no time just don’t overdo it
Thats the plan :)
thanks for sharing this part of your journey.
Thank you for watching it :)
good to see youre healing well. had MCL surgery a few years ago and that cooling machine gave me flashbacks haha. Hope youre back on the ice soon!
That good or bad flashbacks? Thank you brother
Trav, Thanks for sharing. Sounds like you're on a good path of progress. Unless you play competitively people don't understand the amount of constant pain that goes with the territory. Unfortunately some is debilitating. I'm glad you got that problem straightened out.
I enjoyed your mother's contribution. We need more of mom!
hahah my mom is a character. I am a lot like her personality wise. Thanks for watcihng and all the support :)
I hope this a start for a great come back
I HOPE so too man :)
I got this same surgery at the beginning of june also because of hockey reasons. I can say the recovery is hard somedays, but I was back on the ice 6 months post op and felt great. Hope you heal quickly Trav!
Awesome to hear, hopefully I can follow in your footsteps :)
I feel you Trav. On January 13th I fractured my kneecap in a hockey game and am going through physical therapy. The goal is February 9th to be back but I could be out the rest of the season. Before that, I was doing so well the night I got hurt I had 45 saves on 48 shots and played through the whole game (third period is when I got hurt). We’ll go through this together!
SORRY to hear dude, and yes sir we will get it done together :)
The end of this video got me. When Trav was talking about his teammates just telling him to do PT and stuff. I played goalie up into college and went for my dream. I was at USMC OCS when my hip started to hurt so bad i couldn't breath. Came home and everyone treated me like a quitter. Told me i should've just sucked it up......Good Luck Trav. Don't push too hard.
They will never understand the pain and the sacrifice to continue playing but goalies do. Thank you brother!
Great content from after surgery!
Thank you brandon :)
Great to see you on the path of recovery. This also means no more excuses. Hopefully Pascal can help boost your speed and get your pushes more explosive.
I got to play as close to pro hockey (former pros, college kids) as I’ll ever get last week for the first time. Was a ton of fun, but had to make a bunch of adjustments to my game quick. Playing with guys and gals that can tip with a purpose added a level of difficulty I wasn’t expecting, but we did walk away with the win, so maybe I’ll be invited back.
The whole goal of the surgery was to. be able to play and have him get the most out of me. Time will tell what we can do!
Trav sir, heal up and you’ll be back on the ice before you know it. You’ll be great healthy and when ready to go! 💚💚💚🇨🇦
Back with the green hearts hey ross ;)
hope you can get back on the ice soon. speedy recover trav
Thank yo Kennedy :)
I've been watching a lot of your content and I love it, could you do another best stick to buy, based on price, puck handling, durability, etc?
It's on my to do list ;)
@@trav4oilers Sweet, I'm glad that you hip surgery went well.♥
Cant wait to see you play next year bro!!
I can't wait to see either man !
Glad to see you're on the (long) road to recovery. I totally empathize with the feeling of wanting to stick it out and be there for the team, but there is a point where an injury prevents you from being an asset and you become a liability. That was the case with my recent groin injury; simply dropping into a butterfly would have me near tears and trying to play through the injury simply meant my team was losing by bigger and bigger margins. Two months off the ice and physio has me back to almost normal and I am no longer a liability to my team.
The liability part is relatable. May be a good topic for the podcast coming soon!
I feel your pain ... after 55 yrs of playing hockey, at many different levels, at 62 I had to bow out of playing due to one knee issue (meniscus tears & cartilage missing issues). I'd initially hurt myself in my late 20's or early 30's but ignored it. You've done the right thing by having the problem addressed at your age. I wish the best to you in your recovery and hope you get back to the level of play you were at. It's a bit too late on my part. I hope to see you out there again ... I enjoy the vids. Good luck.
I also want to carve this out as a nice career so time will tell if that's possible :)
Hey trav I am a 15 year old goalie in the Detroit area and I am dealing with the same injury you were/are and it's not fun and I have to wait forever to get this surgery done I just wanna say you're a big inspiration to me and keep making your vlogs.
Thank you for watching bro. Sorry to hear you're going through the same thing. Hope this video helps
@@trav4oilers Thank you trav watching this helps me understand if i do the right things I be good as new.
I love the progress! Keep trucking Trav!
Love you too Irfan!
Glad to hear the recovery is going smoothly. I too am I victim of FAI, however, I’m only 68”(172.7cm)….😮 I also have a double FAI and will be doing both at the same time. Got any recommendations for at home PT? Keep up the great work and pursuing your dreams kiddo!
Just stretch and keep as loose as humanly possibe man otherwise it'll eat you up!
Trav, it has been a long time since I have watched or commented on your feed. This is an important one, albeit late. Part of my reason for having falling off the side of the Earth was having to go through hip surgery myself... DOUBLE HIP REPLACEMENT surgery. Those took place over the course of the major parts of the pandemic so between surgery and pandemic restrictions my whole life basically fell apart. It has been 3 years since my left hip was replaced and just over 2 years since my right hip replacement. I walked home from my first surgery (shhh, don't tell my surgeon) the second was not so forgiving, but, my point was going to be, even though I am not a pro, even though I am twice you age (almost), and even though my surgeries were something more extreme than what you are getting, I am looking forward to getting some new equipment, lacing up and getting between the pipes for whatever pick-up-shinny-beer-league will have me. You are young and strong and far more talented than me and I know you can and will get through this easily and believe me, brother, you will feel like a new man in no time. I was terrified of the first surgery and begging to get the second. Now I am doing all the things I used to, weightlifting, martial arts, occasionally running, piggy-backing my daughter to and/or from school, and I feel great as I am sure you will, too. Remember, you are not what you have done, you are what you have overcome. You have overcome a lot. Best wishes from me and looking forward to sometime grabbing a coffee when you are through Ontario's Capitol next.
Hey well welcome back to the channel my friend and hopefully we can make you a regular again. Hope all is well and sorry to hear about the hip. Would love coffee in Toronto :)
@@trav4oilers No need to be sorry Trav. I am very happy to have both of my hips replaced. I am back to all the things I love to do, except playing goal. I have aspirations of a return to the ice soon. Point was, I have two metal hips now and I am able to do weight training, walking, running, jumping, martial arts, just haven't tested them on the ice yet. If I can recover to this extent at 56 years old you can get through this, no problem.
I had this same surgery back in Oct! Same issues… being a goalie all my life playing and serving with the CAF. Things have progressed very well and honestly, minus my 42 YOA I feel great and I’m close to getting back playing! Take the time you need and don’t rush it man!
4-5 months was what I was told, and they were right..
I'll be back soon, don't you worry!

@@trav4oilers segs means secks with an x. I know you’re a dirty dog trav
I can relate a lot to you on this video, I went to play the puck and a kid clip my arm and I tore my labrum in my shoulder to a point where it wasn't in socket anymore . had to come back home and get surgery. leaving mid season sucks but at the end of the day you can't play your 100% best when you don't feel 100%. keep your head up you will be back on the ice before you know it
sorry to hear buddy. It will work out
Great video, it seems the stuff isn't talked about a lot in the goalie world. I have two torn hip labrums and it's excruciating daily but it's hard to dedicate the downtime especially when hockey isn't paying my bills 🤣. Looking forward to your rehab videos. I have found that yoga stretching has helped me immensely overcome some serious pain. Good luck with the rehabilitation!!
I legit havn't seen anything about this stuff. hope this can shed a lot of light for some people
Goalieing is tough man, both mentally and physically, have a good rec bud!
Especially on the body. It's tough!
Trav, you did the right thing. Don’t burry your head in shame and wallow in the difficulties that are to come over these next 6 months. Those are a microscopic time period in what could be a very renewed career. If you hadn’t gotten the surgery, you’d be dragging along until eventually you’d get a career ending injury, and then that career is out the window. You took the necessary risks and sacrifices to stay afloat, and what do winners do to survive?! They stay afloat until they can smooth sail
I agree. Time will tell whats going to happen and where I'll be but I will be healthy :)
Good to see you're making so much progress after surgery, and I wish you full and speedy recovery.
I have a question for you - I'm also 6 5, but only recently started playing hockey so my mobility is far from what it should be (I'm 43). What size pads do you wear? Would you recommend that size to an amateur?
I wear sheath 20.2. Im size 35+1. It's all preference man :)
@@trav4oilers I have a set of ancient Vaughn pads are are allegedly 35+2, but it won’t cover my five hole when I’m in the butterfly. Looking at a set of Warrior pads that are 36+2, but are actually almost 10cm taller. Pad sizing is crazy and makes no sense.
You got this brotha 💪🏽💪🏽
Thank you max
You got this Trav
Thank you George :)
Hey trav there is a basketball player known as the professor he went through a tear in his knee and has a video of his start to finish recovery. I think watching that video may help it is amazing how the human body heals. Best of luck looking forward to the cards.
How are the cards? Assuming they came
I’m 46. Played at the Pro-Level in-line hockey in the very Early days. I got to play some high level amateur ice. I grew up near Washington DC.
I need both hips replaced. I have damaged GSV veins as well. My body wasn’t healthy enough in April to do surgery. I had a few dental issues that needed to be done, then I got a staph infection, then Covid, now the staph sore won’t heal….
I’m having Vein surgery on 2.15.2023.. 6 weeks after I’ll have my left hip.
I can’t walk, I cry I’m pain most days and if I get more than 2 hours of sleep a night I’m happy.
I did it all for the glory… no money was there. I haven’t skated in 13 years. I miss it but… I’ll never skate again. I feel your pain! Good luck!
Sorry to hear about that brother! good luck on your surgery
This was your hippest video yet! 🤙
HA i see what you did there ;)
That ice cooler is the way to go, use it on my knees after skates, also using a TENS unit, have you tried water aerobics?
I love my tens machine, my physio guy just swapped me to EMS
I was a goalie but about a year ago I got a diagnosis saying that I will never play hockey again. Most of my cartilage on my hip was messed up,with a torn labrum, and a rare disease were the femur head bone was dying and turning into mush. The bone compressed and had to get intense surgery. He fixed a lot but still at 40% of what I used to be. 3 months post opp I still can’t walk great and walking is still hard. Hopefully Trav won’t have these issues.
Sorry to hear man, thats tough. Hope I don't have the same issues
Wow you’re moving to the best coast now you can come visit Vancouver island. Glad your on the road to recovery get well soon
I'll be in Vancouver, no ferries anytime soon
hope you heal up well kind of sad that your going to not be at in detroit the rest of the season wanted to come see you play but hope you can come back next season.
thank you brother. We will see next year. I gotta recover first ;)
Krya på dig! 🥅🏒🇸🇪
englsiH?
You made the right call, you need to take care of your body and you will come back better than ever.
I hope thats how it works out man
Hey trav, just got a pair of trav spec pro laces and wondered specifically how you laced them through your skate when putting on your pads
They work on every pad. Let me know what pad and toe bridge you have and they should Lace in.
Sorry I worded that wrong I have the pro laces on the pads but how do you put them through the skate? Like do you put them through the hole at the front of the skate then the hole at the back or just through the middle
I'm going through a similiar thing at this time, luckily my cams haven't destroyed my labrums yet, but both of my hips have only a few degrees of internal rotation. Just started physio myself and hopefully I wont need surgery like you.
Keep me posted brother!
Trav is going to be on demon mode next season
I will have a free right side!
No one knows their body better than the person waking up in it. You did the right thing Trav!
I agree, i hope this fixes everything
I feel for you Trav, I quite literally just got the same surgery but worse and its terrible rn
Whys it so bad?
Good on you for taking care of yourself. I know that it's rough to be off your feet for so long and unable to skate for longer, but it's going to be worth it in the long run. Take it from a 46-year-old who "sucked it up for the team" for way too long and can now barely walk in the morning. Take care of your body; it's the only one you get.
I'm trying my best to do so mike. Thank you for the support and message!
You have nothing to feel bad about getting the surgery. I know this may sound harsh but the team is a year to year basis. Your contract is a year to year in that league. Your walking properly is for life. Your knee damage stopping at the very least.. and the knee hopefully getting better because the geometry is corrected is for life. You now have the ability to 1) Do the thing you love and truly see how good you are without pain and 2) Live out the rest of your life without intense pain.. that to me is far more worth it then a few months of hockey where you were being used sparingly. At the end of the day you did something for yourself so that you can be the best you.. anyone who has problem with that can pound sand.
Thank you for the love and support brother. Means a lot
Keep going 💪
THnak you very much :)
The butterfly combined with acceleration/deceleration, RVH is hell for hips.
IT'S AWFUL on the lowerbody
Good luck with the rehab! You’ll be back on the ice before you know it.
I look forward to it :)
This is so relatable I had hip surgery in june
How are you feeling right now?
@@trav4oilers good man had to take a gap from year to train and get back to being competitive

and chasing down my dream?
I saw you in your car yesterday in North Vancouver Lonsdale
Should have came to say hi :) where you driving?
if you had been getting starts and true playing time i know 100% you would have sucked it up and kept playing and got surgery at a later date but as it was why hurt yourself when things didn't look to change anytime soon-at that point you gotta look after #1 and get the surgery done...short term pain for long term gain. congrats guy i think you made the right decision.
Do you need to be able to do the splits to play as goalie.
I don't think so personally
Nice video.
Thank you :)
Get better soon bud
Thank you fernando
