I wish this forum had anointed a different moderator for this dialogue. Shoma is fine but she lacks the intellectual prowess and inquisitiveness to learn about Adi Shankra. Moreover she is obsessed with tossing words like Hindutva when she doesn't understand the context of it. She stops a beautiful discourse in middle 20:08 and has pre set ideas about Hindu culture. Great talk by Pavan Verma.

Absolutely true. What is Hindutva if not Hinduness, which is a uniquely palpable quality of Hindus? It looks like this lady wants to be labelled and associated with a category of somewhat anti-Hindu people whom she admires (yet hiding behind the veil of Adi Shankara). It is strange that Pavan did not put the record straight either (making one suspect if he is one of those dry scholars and not an ardent practitioner of Hinduism).

Name Algebra came from Arabic name Al-Jabbar who took the knowledge from India and wrote it in Arabic. The Europeans took the Arabic book and translated it into Latin and named it as Algebra to honor Al-Jabbar without the realization that the concept came from India. Hinduism, as the lady put it, is not 'indeterminate'! It is the seekers' path and knowledge changes as the time passes. That does not mean it is confused or indeterminate!! Enjoy the open architecture of the Hinduism!! Mr Verma forgets that Kauravas are there in every generation following Adharma and any amount of debate did not move Duryodhana and war was inevitable! It may not be politically correct for a diplomat to accept violence as a solution, but inevitability prevails!

Why is this lady so against Swami Vivekananda and Sri Aurobindo ? Again and again she refers to their teachings as a " travesty " ...shame on such bigoted brain dead journos .
Swamiji and Sri Aurobindo did what they felt was their duty towards Hindus who were completely oblivious towards the situation of India and Indians . They re-instilled a sense of pride in HIndus for their Dharma and Nation which had extinguished as a result of the propagation of the 'colony mindset ' which the British wanted to impregnate into every Indian . Madam you need to do a deep study of the works of these two giants (and hearing the type of relatively low intelligence questions you asked I bet you wont be able to even comprehend most of Aurobindo ) . Yes they were HIndu Nationalists and inspired others as well including Netaji Subhash Bose . Dont like it ? then protest outside Belur Math in Kolkata and Auroville in Pondicherry.

Mr. Pawan Verma has delved into the Hindu philosophy of Adi Shankaracharya and that was simply great. Many a times even the moderator was hesitant to stop Pawan Verma during his discourse because he explained it so profoundly in a very simple language. This philosophy was not able to stop the invaders and marauders from substituting it with their philosophy of an exclusive faith because there was no dharma guru to stop them as some things can be countered only with the might of swords which the dharma guru did not possess hence the common man had to fend for himself and ended up converting himself as has also happened in Goa during the Portuguese inquisition. We were lucky due to the size of our country that the invaders and marauders were not able to impose their philosophy in this whole land as they did with Zoroastrian Iran and now they have done with the tribal state of Mizoram otherwise nobody would have remembered this philosophy at this point of time as it would have been wiped off from the face of the earth and we would not have seen Pawan Verma and the moderator discussing it. This is where Hindutva and Nationalism comes which I suppose Pawan Verma refers to as Hindu Evangalism. The Hindutva and Nationalism does not restrict others to live peacefully in this land and practice their faith as long as they owe allegiance to this land its laws and its people as they are part of it and not to the land of their faith. The rigors of politics and the reaction to violent radicalism has created fringe elements which every Hindu Nationalist abhors. I have seen Pawan Verma innumerable times on various channels during a debate but he is unable to articulate his position freely in today`s charged political atmosphere and the Kashmir issue due to his political affiliation. It would also be interesting to see a debate between Pawan Verma and Rajeev Malhotra.

These self appointed interpreters of Hinduism are at best trying to act secular. Who said only dialogue is the way. Yes with civilized people, that can be the way not when there is a war. Well Mr Pavan Verma, let me try to expose your prejudice..
    1. According to Advaita Vedanta, only Jnanam or true knowledge of the Self is supreme.. everything else, be it Bhakti or Karma or Upasana etc comes next.
    2. So though Vendata never says other philosophies and view points are wrong, it does say that they all are inferior truths.. and Advaita Vedanta is the only supreme truth.
    3. Upholding 'Dharma' is the fundamental duty of every person. Even if you indulge in materialistic life, upholding 'Dharma' is primordial.
    4. Even a Vedantin who has devoted his entire life to vedantic studies and contemplation is bound to live a Dharmic life.
    5. Most Indian religions such as Jainism, Buddhism, Sikhism, etc are rooted in Dharmic path.
    6. Almost all of Abhrahamic religions such as Islam, Christianity etc have no idea of Dharma and are sometimes even proponents of Adharma.
    7. Now Mr Pavan Verma, you want to call yourself a 'secular' , 'tolerant' Hindu who 'respects' other religions and philosophies, and won't belittle them.
    Fair enough..
But why do you belittle 'Hindutva' brigade? Why do you discard them as non Hindus? Yes, no doubt most of them are ignorant of Advaita Vedanta philosophy, but yet they're atleast followers of a Dharmic life and culture.. know? For your political gains and convenience, you are a 'secular' 'tolerant' Hindu, but yet you discard 'Hindutva'brigade? Your logic is Laughable..

    • @coermech9620
      @coermech9620 6 лет назад +2

Without even going to big examples, do you think bashing up a couple experiencing the emotion of love is dharmic?
Even if you say those goons are not true hindutvavaadis, THEY assume authority over hindutva and justify their adharma through the organized religion.
I think the problem is the term HINDUTVA has been appropriated by a whole lot of groups of people, some of them may be orthodox, some liberal and others in between.
So, I don't know if it's right to frown whenever someone says "Hindutva" because voices like you and I are in minority and the ignorants in majority.

Shoma anand's expression 'oh, you are getting standing ovation! ' is sooooo cute. Had yaswant sinhaji delayed for an hour more she would have reached 'sachidanand' state of mind. It is necessary to take break from 'spirits' to understand spirituality. Detoxification process followed by treatment. if talking about adi shankaracharya gets standing ovation for pavan varmaji, the whole world stands for shankaracharya's philosophy. Hinduism means universalism & connecting with the cosmos . Not just looking for 'arth' on earth but seeking 'paramaarth '. Gandhiji followed bhagavadgita which teaches inclusiveness of whole humanity.there is no heart that shuts the door when you say that u r from gandhi's land. bapu is mahatma, shankara is paramatma. Unfortunately some uneducated indians propogate that science started when apple dropped on newton's head & rest of all truths are mythology. Pavanji, as always it was a pleasure hearing your clear thoughts, expression & deeper knowledge. You bring a different dimension to civilized debate of convictions & dialogue. All evangelists shall automatically disappear if politicians protectc& uphold constitution at its full capacity wiithout playing Loksabha & Rajyasabha snake & ladder game. I liked the way Pavan Verma denied to comment on Swami Vivekananda in a bad light which this notorious self-identified secualr anchor tried so hard. She asked this question three times that Swamiji, Aurovinda and Dayananda were all wrong in understanding Hinduism because they also had some missionary zeals. But, Pavan verma always rebutted with the philosophical underpinning and concluded that there is no contradition between the Advaita of Shankara, Bhakti of Ramakrishna and Advaita of Vivekananda. Hope the so-called secularists will understand this at some point.

I have read the Book by Sri.Pawan K.Verma.With respect to the Interviewer ( though one comments as “annoying” ) Firstly Sri.Pawan K.Varma is highly learned ,dressed traditionally INDIAN.
Secondly there is No necessary to be “quickly” hurrying up in her second sentence, using inappropriate words like “ Fight” with Mandala MISRA.When interviewing such learned people it would be ideal if an experienced,Sanskrit exponent, articulate in its tradition be carefully selected, Added to the interviewer,The Glenlivet .? The moderator's views on Swami Vivekananda and Sri Aurobindo - evident from her line of questioning - appears to be based on a superficial understanding (or a deep misunderstanding) of their works. It is important that we judge personalities by the circumstances and times they lived in, and by the purpose their work served. Both of these spiritual giants of modern India had the onerous task of awakening the Indian who was driven to despair, inertia and inferiority complex by centuries of colonization and oppression, and they chose the spiritual realm to realize that goal.

I just finished reading the book written By Sri.Pavan K Varma. Also read and reread the works Sri Shankar Bhagavatpada every day.I am 70 years now. After reading Mr.Varma's "bashya "on the great Shankaracharya ,one can say Mr.Varma has drawn parallels between Science and Religion; further it's interrelation with quarks and God particle. He is no ordinary man.
He should not be used in political debates on television with narrow minded anchors. He should write books with more parallels with Upanishads, great saints of Bharatvarsh.I feel "Sir your image is very much lowered with those sponsors products advertised in the back drop, especially you being addressed "Pavan "by name like an ordinary man.Definately not in public."
As somebody put in the comments would like this RUclips by trimming the anchor.
So that your respect is high in our minds.
May be I will only read your books in future.
Your book Adi Shankara and your talk is a Great knowledge for our youth.

A very good and commendable effort by Shri Pavan Varma. But before I comment further, a word about the moderator Ms. Shoma. This interaction was more suited for someone with adequate depth of knowledge and understanding, and endowed with a spirit of curiosity or enquiry. Shoma is too shallow to engage in such a discussion. Just look at how she brings in words like hindutva, love jihad etc. reflecting her misplaced sense of secular outlook. Well, she could be forgiven for her lack of knowledge and perspective, but definitely not for trying to diminish the likes of Swami Vivekananda, Shri Aurobindo or Veer Sawarkar for that matter.
A couple of points regarding Mr. Varma’s assertions. His example of two electrons far apart, one in Tokyo and the other in India, if being along the same axis would have the same direction of spin; there seems to be some confusion here. In the subject example, the axis would pass through the earth due to it’s curvature. It’s well known that any two points distinctly apart would have a common axis passing through them. Likewise for two electrons. His example may be true if the two electrons do not have intervening material between them??
My other observation is on the reference to certain advocates of Sanatan Dharma as ‘Evangelists’, which is so untrue and misrepresentative. Since the beginning, the practitioners of Sanatan Dharma have never evangelized. They have always been on the path of seeking.Evangelizing is the favorite activity of Abrahamic faiths. Pavan Varma would have done well to refer to the religion as Sanatan Dharma rather than Hinduism.
The urge to appeal to a wider cross section of the masses leads sometimes to falling into the company of unlettered moderators and even dumber audiences who clap at inanities.

Vivekananda straight jacketed Hinduism and rejected multiplicity? That news to me and I read the complete works of Vivekananda. One doesn't even need to read his complete works, just read his Chicago speech at the parliament of religions and that is enough to disprove this notion. And his master was a Kali devotee by the way. Shoma should do some more making such allegations. i'm also disappointed that Pawan didn't address this.

I agree as he does not answer to defend Swami Vivekanda and other philosophers. These philosophers never supported only Advaita. In fact Sri Shankara himself has sung in Bhakthi devotionals like Bhaja Govindam as well! Truly one path never contradicts the other it embellishes it!! These single dimension politics ridden biased philosophers who do not tell the full truth , remain silent instead of countering the untruths from moderator and do not add too much value and should be ignored. If you want to understand Hinduism, learn from Vivekananda, Pathanjali or directly from the books of Krishna, Shankara or Ramanuja or Madhva and more.

No, scientists are not asking 'why cannot there be a big crunch.' Pavan Varma is saying both that the 'universe is expanding' and that a big crunch is in our future. The observational evidence has already shown that the universe is expanding and over time, the galaxies will go beyond our event horizon and our entire night sky will consist of the Local Group of Galaxies which are gravitationally bound.

Also , hinduism is incomplete without mutual respect , dignity and debates all of them which are lacking in islam and christianity. In fact these are aggressive , non redirecting cult directed at destruction if hinduism
Also , hinduism totally accepts criticizing other religions as well s accepts it's own criticism. And hinduism tells us to speak with extreme clarity and frankness and that is the rationale of speaking against christianity and islam.

I have read the book and it is an easy read & a product of good research. Science section, though, is just a recycle of content present in most books (by scientists & science writers) published in the past 3-4 decades on quantum physics, cosmology & parallels between modern science and eastern wisdom. Nothing special. But PV has done a good job of explaining the spiritual essence of Advaita, Shankara's brilliant, logical arrival at the nature of reality from Vedanta perspective.
Having said that, I wish PV doesn't engage in conversations with these pseudo-liberals like this lady. They are disingenuous. While she extols the Brahman principle of Hinduism's message, her real objective is to target Hindus who are finding their spirit of dharma through life & works of great sages like Aurobindo, SV etc. Criticizing the highly reactionary fringe among Hindus (there are always people within any group who give expression to the existential threats, real or imagined, they face, in the most undesirable manner) is just a door to get into the general "Hindu bashing" space.
Just as PV explains the non-dual Vedanta and great tradition of "samvaad", intellectual debates in our glorious past, he does talk about the four purusharthas, paramarthika & vyvaharika realms, and how to balance them in the right way to seek moksha. What does that mean? Even PV misses that. In the vyavaharika world, dharmics have been brutalized by extremist, predatory, expansionist, exclusivist religions from the west of Indus. There is a millennium-long history of this brutality that drove the dharmic society into survivalist mode. So, is it wrong or irrational for the descendants of these brutalized dharmic ancestors to think in terms of their survival and preservation of their way of life? I won't even question the lady & her ilk (they are sold to an irrational, self-defeating notion of secularism) but why would PV think dharmics can resolve every threat using dialogue? Why does India need army then? Let's allow every marauder to invade this land and sing "we are all one". Let's eliminate (that itself is antithetical the celebrated idea of diversity) those Hindutva "reactionaries" and allow every clever missionary & Caliphate-seeking exclusivist to destroy the very society that discovered and propagated the non-dual spiritualism. Will you be happy Pavan Varma? It is silly & naive to think that you can have dialogue with crazies who want the establish a caliphate or a global church and force everyone to obey one true God, abide by one holy book and die for one true prophet. The peaceful and compassionate Chinese Buddhist monks developed martial arts to defend against the violence of Mongol brutes. Why didn't they just prefer to have dialogue? PV should know that those who are quite passionate in defending dharma may not be well-versed in great Hindu spiritual wisdom like he does, but they know that in the vyavaharik world where multiplicity does exist and conflicts do arise in this realm, they need to confront the irrational, homogenizing forces. It is not always pretty, but needs to be done. That's why Sri Krishna gave the Gita, to wake up the philosophizing & indignant Arjuna to pick up his weapon and fight against the Kauravas.
Pavan Varma, I do respect you a lot, but in the modern, geopolitical world, a society that has a history of invasion, that continues to see #BreakingIndia forces engaged in subversive actions, one cannot expect every member of that society to just philosophize & chant "tat tvam asi" (I really wish the whole world chants it) & ignore the signs of trouble. Such a society is forced to build many layers of security to protect its way of life. Of course, "samvaad" is the best policy; but there will be people who will not engage in samvaad if they see flashing swords in the other camp. And, it will be foolish to think that this "other" doesn't exist in this land of Vedanta.
