All my cousins in India want to come to England or Canada or USA where as I want to go back to India and be rid of my britishness. I bought a one way ticket out of UK a year ago , currently I'm in Thailand but I plan to settle down in my motherland and start a family there. Thank you for this speech, very articulate. We want them acknowledge that the colonial rule was terrrible for India and other Commonwealth countries. And we don't want to hear them justifying the British rule, it is in no way justifiable.
It's okay to feel bad but don't let it persist. That's history now. Good Luck! Welcome to India!

@@sirlordhenrymortimer6620 Careful with what you wish for. Post-brexit, your PM is actually looking forward to licking Indian asses so as to sustain Britain economically. Today, if all the Indians were to leave Britain, more than 100,000 people will lose jobs there (source: Grant Thornton UK) . Indian companies in Britain reportedly paid 650 million pounds to your government in taxes (Source: India meets Britain 2016: Tracking the UK’s top Indian companies, a report by CII). The truth is that much of today's Britain has been build on the blood, sweat and looted wealth of millions of people around the world that suffered horrendously under British colonialism. But they don't teach you a line of all this in schools. And after all this ignorant British public have the audacity of making grand claims of how Britain contributed to globalization through colonialism. Some balls you have, I have to give it to you.

@@ajay262134 do you even know how was both the nations partitioned? What was the voting criteria, how many people voted for it. Do you know that?
I know their country was made on the basis of religion only, but only upper class people voted for whether there should be partition or not. Now in 2023, India has rich people accounting to not even 1% of the population. What do you think, how many people were from high class at that time? Because only high class was eligible for the votings. People who own lands, paid all their taxes were eligible. At that time, what do you think, how many people owned land or could pay their taxes?
And the person who commented, even if his family also voted at that time. Is it his fault? If he thinks differently, then we should appreciate him. Why fighting on this now?
Why you are speaking the language of a politician? It was the politicians who divided us, the british and the pro sepratist politicians like Jinnah and Savarkar. Those were the people who divided us, not all of them (the people of pakistan).
We civilians are always used as a pawn for their sick ideas to get more power.
They used religion to divide us all at that time. If that didn't happen, our countries would be together or maybe we would be like EU. We would be the most powerful in the world, more than US, China and Russia. But we are still fighting. We are still used as a pawn by our politicians of both the countries.
What happened after the Revolt of 1857, in which Hindus- Muslims and other minorities fought together against british and then after that we are now divided and shifting blames on each other and in the corner, all the politicians are laughing on us and getting more and more powerful.
      DON'T FIGHT WITH EACH OTHER.

He is not the real thinker. He is only narrating the thought he acquired by reading books. The real thinkers are those who's books he has read.
By all means appreciate Tharoor for talking about it, but always give credit to the thinkers who's narrative he is presenting. Dada bhai Naoroji is one of them. When I first heard Tharoor's Oxford speech, I recalled Dad bhai's drain theory. I had come across that term in Economics in my college days.

      BRITISH CRIMES IN INDIA.
( my response to dr Shashi Tharoor).
      ----------------------------------------
1-By conquering all of India, Britain ended an age-old rivalry, conflicts & bloodshed between Muslims, Hindus, Sikhs & Marathas, and united them into one nation and made them all feel proud to be Indian.
2-saved millions of lives of widows by abolishing the centuries-old practice of Sati.
3- saved millions of lives by abolishing the 1000s of years old practice of female infanticide in which the baby girls would be buried alive by parents to avoid paying dowry.
4- stopped Indians from butchering one another in the name of religion and caste.
5- promoted education and pulled Indians out of the dark ages and introduced them to the age of science and discovery.
6- built roads, bridges, schools and railway tracks and govt buildings like the parliament house and the president house.
7- introduced Indians to sewers, water closets and running water. Indians had been going to the jungle for the call of nature for 1000s of years.
8- gave the gift of the English language that is helping the subcontinent to learn science.
9- gave Indians a single currency.
      10-protected the lives of minorities.
11- gave security and equal opportunity to all Indians.
12-stopped discrimination and racism based on religion or caste.
13- civilised Indians and taught them to respect law and order.
14- built army and police for the entire country.
15- introduced democracy in India and taught Indians the importance of secular and democratic values.
16- gave all Indians equal rights to education and jobs.
17- turned Indian society into a model society (watch the videos from that period).
      -------------------------------------------------------------------
Since they left, the entire subcontinent has turned into a hellhole for women and minorities.
      -----------------------------------------------------------------
I demand that the British government pay us reparations for the above-mentioned heinous crimes it committed against us, the poor Indians.

@@thetirelesscrusader4745 1)Right. England is that "great" country that introduced the world to democracy but is ruled by monarchs itself. The hypocrisy!😂
      2) I recommend you to read about the Indus Valley Civilization in detail. It was one of the earliest civilizations in the world and had immaculately planned cities, with covered drainage and well maintained sewage system. So Indians were not unaware of these knowledge.
      3) The whole world is turning to Ayurveda and Yoga. Were those written in English? I don't think so. Because they weren't! They were written in Sanskrit. So no. English is not necessary to learn science!🙄 The countries where people don't speak English also have medical facilities.
      4) The Britishers had no equality and no regard for the religion of the Indians. Please read about the cause of rebellion by Bhagat Singh.
      5) The Hindu King, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj had already started building a strong navy in 1670s. So I don't know what knowledge of Navy or Army you're talking about.
So basically, you are still unaware of many aspects of the history. Also, all of these do not, can not, and can never nullify the fact that the Britishers murdered, tortured, and looted half of the countries in the world and still feel no remorse or guilt for that. If massacring hundreds of unarmed women, men, old people and children in a village fair doesn't count as a heinous act for you, then sorry, but you need to seek some help. URGENTLY. And also, get your facts straight before commenting on how many countries suffered under the cruelty of the Britishers.

In 1750, India had 23% of the world's GDP because it had 25% of the world's population. However, Britain was already a wealthy country even before it colonized India. If we look at the per-capita income of India and Britain in the 1750s as per Angus Maddison data, Britain's per-capita income was three times that of India, and India's per-capita income had been declining for a century before Britain won the Battle of Plassey. Comparing the total GDP of India and Britain in the 1750s to argue that India was richer than Britain is like saying that Uttar Pradesh is richer than Goa today. Later, the Industrial Revolution occurred in the Western world after the Scientific Revolution, with the invention of machines and technologies like the steam engine, and their wealth increased exponentially. Meanwhile, India's global share of GDP dropped to 4% in 1950. The same thing happened in China, which was not directly colonized. In fact, China's per-capita income was even lower than India's at the time of independence. During the 1750s, China's per-capita income was higher than India's. Therefore, if we say that Asian countries are poorer because of colonization, then what happened to countries like Nepal, Bhutan, Ethiopia, and Liberia, which were not colonized? It's worth noting that Nepal has a similar history and culture to India, yet it is the poorest country in Asia. The fact that Nepal was not colonized by the British undermines the argument that colonization is solely responsible for a country's level of poverty.

Instead, for 10 long years the world had to suffer an ineffective puppet who was propped up by his American masters, and who practically did nothing during the civil war and massacres in Iraq, Syria, South Sudan and Central African Republic.

Hi, I really like listening to the thoughts of Mr. S. Tharoor. One of my great grandfather was a freedom fighter. He died at Jail in Lahore, after a hunger strike for 63 days in 1929. He was only 24 years old then. His name may be forgotten in today's world...but in my heart I know, that he showed the world that Indians wouldn't be dominated. What British did in India is still unpardonable. Money can't compensate that. What Mr. Tharoor said in laughter is quite serious in nature.

So true.... I am a teacher and have been teaching internationally for a long time. I can say the Indian mind is exceptional. They would have been better without Britain's intervention. I have students from the UK and have discovered from teaching them that they are operating from a mindset of privilege. You can see it even in their school curriculum - where students are not even expected to work as hard, their excuse is there needs to be school / life balance. And I realize this is largely because after school they already know they will most likely land the better jobs, them being British seems to be enough to get all the best opportunities even with very little effort. Most of my students studying in British schools do not show the same resilience or intellectual ability in comparison for example to my students going to an Indian or Asian or American school. The kids want to do very little things but since their parents have the better paying jobs, their privilege to travel, access to expensive things (ipads etc), expensive social activities etc help them improve their mediocre abilities.
This needs to change. We are in a different time. I really don't even understand why wealthy Indians prefer British schools, to train and act like Brits. India doesn't need to do that. Based on population alone, India can survive on its own. They are on their own a big economy.
After teaching so many Indian students, I really stated to love their culture and just how great they ara as human beings.
I am not Indian by the way.

      -----------------------------------------------------------------

What would the British do with all the stolen loot? They can't put it into a museum as that would only reinforce their negative image. They should return all the stolen artifacts back to India so that the heritage of India can be put into a museum for the current and future generations to see. They took the Peacock Throne for example and the Kohinoor Diamond. Its like taking King Tuts artifacts and keeping it hidden in a some room in England. I don't see much difference between them and the Taliban destroying the Bamiyan Buddha statues. They are a part of not only India's heritage but also the world's heritage.

@@johnalbent How good must it feel living in denial being a white privileged person living in society? As with India's rule, you can't destroy a country's economical, cultural, religious infrastructure and then tell them to be on their way and expect things to be hunky-dory. It wasn't overnight but took a lot of time for India to emerge and to open its markets to the world and today it's a 3 Trillion dollar economy. Yes, governments had their shortcomings but they were also dealing with problems from independence that were very unusual faced by no other country. If the oppression wasn't so bad then India wouldn't be the "filth" that so many westerners call it. Also, Google is not the way to learn history or Shashi Tharoor shouldn't be the one telling people in another country about their history rather it should be schools teaching British students history about their colonial empire. And India is a big chunk of history that "was real" if we had any doubts for British education to be included.
Lastly, it's absurd to compare Korea being in Japanese control which only lasted 4 decades to British-Indian control which lasted Two and half-centuries. Japan did and had repeatedly apologized for the wrongdoings of their colonial terror as well as for WW2, while the British have never apologised for any wrongdoings and yet forget reparations.
As I said earlier a privileged white person like yourself living in a rich country would never understand the sufferings of our ancestors that have gone through being 2nd or 3rd generation Indians after Independence we still feel the repercussions in today's society. Please I would suggest reading some history yourself right from India's constant struggle of power before the British within itself all the way till post-independence India and spread the word of remembering our past as a good way to progress in the future as globalised societies.

You must have read Industrial revolution then you must have also read how it spreaded from Britain to France, Germany etc. India is isolated from world because of Geography. Now in 2020 it doesn't matter because of all the connectivity we have but it did matter 20-30 years before from today. That's why we couldn't industrialized ourselves as much as South Korea who had industrialized Japan as their neighbour and got aid from US due to Korean war. South Asia even today is the most insignificant region next to Africa.
Also India as you must be aware had million of times more problems than these countries thanks to its diversity and hostile neighbours. We had already fought 5 wars since independence.

@@jeanettewee8805 It's not like Nepal was a superpower back in 1750s either so that argument from your side is redundant. India collapsed from a position of pride to where it is today at the hands of the British plunderers. You can't take countries that have perennially remained mediocre and put them as an example.

@sobhankb1 stop misusing the word “holocaust” to refer to the great accomplishments of Winston Churchill. If it weren’t for him you would be under Japanese occupation and the world would have been under Nazi rule. So stop spreading bullsh*t.
