This is probably one of the reasons Paul and Gene won't bring back Ace. Although a lot of fans think it's cruel and heartless of them, i honestly can't blame them because this was downright disgraceful. Even if it had been the sound guy's fault (which i don't believe it was), it was inappropriate to yell at him and insult him, especially in front of the crowd.
I agree, Ace acted like a real low life and totally unprofessional. I have a feeling he thought he would be back with Kiss by now and they actually drew the line in the sand which I can't blame them for doing it. Hem and Peter Criss were pretty classless when they didn't get their way.
You probably need to know what was going on. Several times musicians have to ask the sound guy to do certain things and some sound guys ignore them...there are a lot more bad sound guys then good ones..and if the bad ones are fucking up the monitors where the musicians can't hear it will effect everything...then dumb shits like you think it's the musicians fault. I have been on stage and couldn't hear anything being olayed...that is a scary feeling
According to John Regan (bass) Frehley never bothered to show up for the 15 min sound check. The sound guy also said he was scrambleing trying everything in his power to get Frehley more volume. Frehley's guitar techs ,his manager were there you see them in the video...They should have done their job before he took the stage.Frehley also suffers from hearing loss .His idea of loud and the sound guy may be quite different
I really felt for that engineer. Rule #1 In show biz is you never berate the crew in front of an audience. NEVER. You can only turn up wedge monitors so much before they’re unusable and start feeding back which is exactly what we heard. I’ve been using in-ear monitors since the 90’s. (Drummer) And now you can even mix your own monitors with an iPad if you want to. Ace is a fucking dinosaur. I love him but he is horribly outdated compared to other cats his age who are still playing music. And it shows.

Ace was one of my childhood heroes in the 70s. But if I was that sound guy I would have lost my s*** for him talking to me like that. Sometimes it's okay to knock a celebrity back down to earth when needed.
Having worked in that industry a lot, I can say that there are certainly moments when things happen and the reasons why are either lost in the heat of the moment or plain mysterious. And Frehley would know this very well. So yes, it’s very poor behaviour on his part.

As a retired pro musician who has played on a 6 month cruise for Royal Carribbean, I know how frustrating it is to have a bad mix, but you have to just take what you have a plow through it as best you can.
If you loved Ace, you would have read his book by now, and if you read his book, or followed his career at ALL, you’d know he’s been sober for a very long time lol. You don’t love Ace, and we don’t love you. Don’t criticize when you don’t know - educate yourself fool.

Rachael's definitely got a few screws loose and he was with her for 12 years, so logically you've got to have a few screws loose yourself to date someone like that for 12 years.
Honestly, this kind of thing is the EXACT reason I don’t pick up sound gigs when they come around. Many musicians are tech savvy and understand the physics of monitors, pickups and amplifiers...but there are just as many who don’t. And among those people dwell the type who will chew you out in front of an audience...many of whom need to hear themselves 10db above everyone else. Fuck that noise...I’ll stick to playing my guitar. Some people are built for that kind of human interaction, I’m not. I’m liable to tell someone to go fist themselves, mute everything and walk off the gig. And since I insist on showing a professional face at all times, I know where my strengths lie and where my weaknesses lie. This is one of my weaknesses...probably the biggest.

(I play guitar) The lead guitarist was laying down some really nice lead solos but the sound guy had the bass guitar cranked through the roof it was just BBBBBZZZZZZZZ!!!! you couldn't hear any of the lead. I went up and told the sound guy to drop the bass down so we could hear the lead solo. Well that didn't go over well. Some guys just don't "Get" specific frequencies and how the affect each other.

The wedges couldn't be turned up any louder because they had already caused high-pitched microphonic feedback in the pickups of Ace's guitar several times during the gig. Meaning: The coils and screw pole pieces in the pickups vibrated uncontrollably from the sound pressure. Do you have any idea how loud you have to play to get that to happen with wax-potted DiMarzio "Super Distorton" pickups, mechanically? It's not the sound guy's fault that Ace made himself deaf by playing way too loud while being under the influence of substances that - among all the other bad effects - severely impact your hearing ability, for most of his life. It's not his fault that Ace is to "old-school" (or stupid, quite frankly) to use hearing aids or proper modern in-ear monitoring either. And it's definitely not his fault that Ace plays and sings like complete shit these days, because in his mind he's still too big a "star" to practise or rehearse. Anybody who is dumb or nostalgia-addled enough to spend a single cent on an Ace Frehley gig nowadays get what they deserve - big fat helping of useless garbage. Anybody who bought the narrative that he ever got fully sober (including pills) needs to look at this nice bridge I have to sell at a killer price.

To be honest, I’ve had sound guys piss me off but I didn’t make a big scene! dumbest thing that happened to me is when I hit my boost for solo to cut through the mix and the sound guy decided to lower my volume back into the mix??? while I did a solo!!!! So when I turned off the boost! I was not heard! So then I had to switch the boost back on to get some volume back!! I’m waving like mad at the sound guy who just ignored??? The overall mix for everyone was crap! Drummer was louder than everyone else????
All those amp cabinets are not real some are called face cabinets only have a power light that said it's alot louder on stage than you think but yes what he did was unprofessional
I played so many gigs where I couldn't hear much besides myself and the drums, somehow it was always fine. If he enough volume from his amps he'd have been fine so I honestly have never heard a guitar player saying he couldn't hear himself.
I don’t care who you are, take care of those that take care of you, in this instance you take care of the fans and your soundman. Could’ve been a lot more professional and got the show along better and quicker by heading side stage and having a quick chat and keeping it cool. The crowd doesn’t need, nor does it want to see that crap, they came for a good time an. That whole thing fucks with the vibe of everything, particularly the performance.

The amazing Ace has fallen far since his heights in the 70s when he had Paul & Gene leading him. His true talent was powerful but once he walked away from them, it all fell apart.
Meanwhile the majority of Ace's albums to this day have been killer! Kiss hasn't really made a good album since Revenge... then rewind about 10 years for Creatures.
Ace is acetually a pretty chill guy with an easygoing sense of humor. For him to get pkissed off like this, the sound guy must've really gotten his goat with intransigent inefficiency.
Ace has a point getting mad .ive been running sound for 10 yrs i use to play in a mexican band for 30 yrs and it would happen to us we alwats got off stage i telll the sound man that why your getting paid to do your job what we say . So now i do sound in our church n i make sure the praise n worpship are comfortable what they hear . Theres a brother in our church who thinks he know it all we had a bad from Nebraska ti play and i was doing live video and i would alway tell him to adjust the sound and he told i know what im doing i said realy brother pastor looked at me and told me to fix the sound and it got cleaner and better then we went to another church where the same band played at there was a realy bad low hum sound and i told him turn the monitors down and turn down the lows on the accordion and it was better. You need to have patient and a good ear to do work as a sound man god bless

You can only turn up monitor mix so much in a tight venue......else you get feedback off the vocal mics. You can also get bounce back off the surfaces of the guitars into the mics. The best way to do small gigs is amps for stage mix and mostly just vocals in the monitors.......mixing tons of instruments into the monitors does nothing but muddy it up. You should have enough guitar by standing in front of your amp....just my opinion from playing clubs for 33 years.
The best thing to do on a small stage like that is to have a boost button to turn up the leads instead of relying on the monitor guy to turn up the guitar. As for monitors, keep it simple and turn up the vocals and rock out.
Unfortunately there are guys out there that have no clue about sound or being an engineer. They have very little training. Its very easy to do a monitor mix. The guy just needs to hear plenty guitar and vocals. I dont condone his attitude but someone like Ace really deserves better.

The wedges couldn't be turned up any louder because they had already caused high-pitched microphonic feedback in the pickups of Ace's guitar several times during the gig. Meaning: The coils and screw pole pieces in the pickups vibrated uncontrollably from the sound pressure. Do you have any idea how loud you have to play to get that to happen with wax-potted DiMarzio "Super Distorton" pickups, mechanically?
It's not the sound guy's fault that Ace made himself deaf by playing way too loud while being under the influence of substances that - among all the other bad effects - severely impact your hearing ability, for most of his life. It's not his fault that Ace is to "old-school" (or stupid, quite frankly) to use hearing aids or proper modern in-ear monitoring either. And it's definitely not his fault that Ace plays and sings like complete shit these days, because in his mind he's still too big a "star" to practise or rehearse.
Anybody who is dumb or nostalgia-addled enough to spend a single cent on an Ace Frehley gig nowadays get what they deserve - big fat helping of useless garbage. Anybody who bought the narrative that he ever got fully sober (including pills) needs to look at this nice bridge I have to sell at a killer price.

Very unprofessional. According to John Regan all he had to do was show up to soundcheck for 10 minutes and this whole thing could have been avoided. He created this entire shitshow.

To be honest, I’ve had sound guys piss me off but I didn’t make a big scene! dumbest thing that happened to me is when I hit my boost for solo to cut through the mix and the sound guy decided to lower my volume back into the mix??? while I did a solo!!!! So when I turned off the boost! I was not heard! So then I had to switch the boost back on to get some volume back!! I’m waving like mad at the sound guy who just ignored??? The overall mix for everyone was crap! Drummer was louder than everyone else????

I played so many gigs where I couldn't hear much besides myself and the drums, somehow it was always fine. If he enough volume from his amps he'd have been fine so I honestly have never heard a guitar player saying he couldn't hear himself.

I don’t care who you are, take care of those that take care of you, in this instance you take care of the fans and your soundman. Could’ve been a lot more professional and got the show along better and quicker by heading side stage and having a quick chat and keeping it cool. The crowd doesn’t need, nor does it want to see that crap, they came for a good time an. That whole thing fucks with the vibe of everything, particularly the performance.

The amazing Ace has fallen far since his heights in the 70s when he had Paul & Gene leading him.
His true talent was powerful but once he walked away from them, it all fell apart.
Meanwhile the majority of Ace's albums to this day have been killer! Kiss hasn't really made a good album since Revenge... then rewind about 10 years for Creatures.

So now i do sound in our church n i make sure the praise n worpship are comfortable what they hear .
Theres a brother in our church who thinks he know it all we had a bad from Nebraska ti play and i was doing live video and i would alway tell him to adjust the sound and he told i know what im doing i said realy brother pastor looked at me and told me to fix the sound and it got cleaner and better then we went to another church where the same band played at there was a realy bad low hum sound and i told him turn the monitors down and turn down the lows on the accordion and it was better.
You need to have patient and a good ear to do work as a sound man god bless

The monitors are louder than the mains.
You can only turn up monitor mix so much in a tight venue......else you get feedback off the vocal mics. You can also get bounce back off the surfaces of the guitars into the mics. The best way to do small gigs is amps for stage mix and mostly just vocals in the monitors.......mixing tons of instruments into the monitors does nothing but muddy it up. You should have enough guitar by standing in front of your amp....just my opinion from playing clubs for 33 years.

The best thing to do on a small stage like that is to have a boost button to turn up the leads instead of relying on the monitor guy to turn up the guitar. As for monitors, keep it simple and turn up the vocals and rock out.

Unfortunately there are guys out there that have no clue about sound or being an engineer. They have very little training. Its very easy to do a monitor mix. The guy just needs to hear plenty guitar and vocals. I dont condone his attitude but someone like Ace really deserves better.
