Yeah, that’s unfortunate because he created so many iconic original guitar parts on those early KISS albums. A lot of people think Ace only uses a handful of Chuck Berry style riffs but for years he came up with very catchy original solos. It seems as though he’s lost much of this ability in his later years. I read once that someone, maybe Tommy or Bruce; I can’t recall had to re-teach him his own solos at some point. Ace is probably my favorite member of the original band, along with Peter…but I’m not a drummer, sadly Ace’s chops have gotten very sloppy when playing live. However his new album 10,000 Volts definitely bodes well for him; he’s definitely still the best songwriter when compared to either Gene or Paul.
They all move away from him when he plays those bad notes like he just laid a stink bomb.
Drunk. No question. And if you think he’s been “sober” for years there’s videos of him in the last few years playing live trying to sing as he’s snorting & sniffing. And it wasn’t his allergies. Hilarious commentary, btw. 😂

Ace"s brain is alcohol and drug soaked. Sorry I saw him many times since 75 and that was inexcusable for such a veteran as Ace. Hell stopping the song to find the issue would have been alot better than that shit pile. He's done and has been for years.

But that's was way more than one note it was properly tuning or relieing on technology. Computers and anything other than pure live music it trash. I saw kiss and Ace since dressed to kill in 75.
Face it his mental and physical skills are just about gone from substance abuse. I love Ace but I'm sorry he is a shadow of what he once was. His and kisses time has been up for years. Not even nit picking. They took a bad 20 seconds out of a show and made it the entire deal. Yeah - It WAS bad. But he got right.

Perhaps he should use the KISS backing tracks. Ace is now horrible at his craft. He never could sing worth a shit, now he can't play a guitar worth a brown turd either.
I was at this show. I winced hard during the solo, but I think it was more just playing the wrong note rather than being out of tune. lol If you find clips from throughout the show, you'll see that they're often playing very slowly (definitely did on Rip it Out). They also did that when I saw Ace's band at a couple of shows in 2017.
Ace was the first great guitarist I saw. In 1977, my older brother took me to my first concert. I paid $3.50 for Cheap Trick/KISS. My jaw was on the floor, it was so surreal. On the drive home, I asked my brother what he thought of KISS. He said they were okay, but damn, that guy (Ace) sure could play guitar. I would not pay big bucks to see the ace frehley show now.

These recent Ace shows that I've been seeing on here are really rough. His voice sounds terrible, his playing is terrible, it pains me to say but I think he's cooked. He had a great career but I think it's time he stops, at this point it's just embarrassing that he's charging people for this.

I saw Ace live 2 days ago for free actually here in Virginia Beach and Ace was spaced out. Slow and missing vocal lines. The band itself was good but Ace was sloppy as usual. Ace claims to be sober for almost 20 years but only Ace himself knows if that is really true. It could be a situation like Ozzy where his brain and nervous system is fried from all the drug and alcohol abuse over the years. I will say this, at least Ace is still rockin!
I don’t think Ace is drunk. He is just an aging rock star and his skills have diminished. His memory has suffered as well. Still love Ace!!!

His guitar is in tune as you can hear he plays fine on the parts before the flub. He’s just playing it in the wrong place on that riff lol. I broke it down on my channel as well lol. Plus instead of the song originally tuned a half step down, this band went a whole step down. Ace is just playing the riff a half step sharp from the band lol. Creates an interesting harmony ha ha

I seen Ace live since the 70s and I actually miss How great Ace was in the 90s w Ritchie. There was a chemistry to his bands back then and even when he was drunk he still played w passion and kicked ass!
It seems like Ace would rather be at home watching TV taking pictures of his socks for Instagram than being on the road.

This is why God invented soundchecks. All venues are different and crowd size could play a factor. Somebody probably forgot to show up....as usual. Lol. Just trying to make a little light of this situation, but we still love you Ace and your band. I don't think Ace is drunk. He's 72 years old and his wear and tear through the years has been showing more and more. As Rocky said once, time will take out everybody. It's undefeated. Even Gene and Paul. God bless them all for still going out there and performing.

Ace will always be one of my guitar Heroes, his sloppy playing and solos are legendary, I don't say sloppy as a negative, ask Jimmy Page fans they will tell you the same thing, who I am also a fan of, but I think time and loss of hearing has taken its toll on Ace. He needs to just stop, and I will say the same thing about Paul and his voice for the last 10 years, time stops for nobody we all get old and have to move to other things, Ace Peter Paul Gene have well beyond gotten to that point

Ace has always been like that. Always was sloppy and wonky. Good luck catching up with his legacy. He has songs,riffs,gold and platinum records. He's obviously not what he used to be but he did it tenfold in the 70s. He's a legend. He didn't write this song or the guitar harmony that he played wrong. He's easy to criticize but not so easy to outshine. He created the Kiss logo and is the creator of the make up they wore. They paid him for the likeness of the makeup and will continue to do so. In the meantime people once again paid good, hard earned money to see a rock and roll catastrophe. Also, he just kinda proved Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley right that he isn't capable of touring and is not trustworthy of performing sober...and that really sucks because Ace was everybody's favorite Kiss member, including myself. Ripping people off is never ok even if you have a legacy like Ace's. If anything, it should hold him to a higher standard.

Shane, what do you make of this? Another music person I know suspects Ace has early dementia and is lost in thought before, after, and during the show. My friend thinks his girlfriend and his manager keep him on the road when he should be in an assisted living facility.
well, I am not a doctor, but when I hear him in interviews he seems to be there and coherent, so not sure, If his girlfirend is younger than him and manages him I am sure she might be keeping him busy to keep the green-beans rolling in?

Les Pauls are notorious for not being able to stay in tune for extended lengths of time, at least the older ones.

Yeah, but this slipped in and out of tune. Generally guitars don't go back into tune without some persuasion. I think its more likely that someone was just playing in the wrong key entirely. Maybe ace maybe the other guy. I think it was ace but kinda hard to tell.
Correct, Les Pauls do that, but you'd think a veteran guitarist like Ace would be able to notice when it goes out and switch guitars or make an on the fly adjustment.
Don't blame the guitar, blame the player. That was a total shit show by Frehley. He completely lost track of where he was in the song. Then he looks at the other guitar player because he knew he was lost and f-ing up big time. Embarrassing.
@@richcasey7380 Ultimately it is the player responsible for his/her guitar. so if you know your guitar has a tendency to act a certain way then stay on top of it. No one blamed the guitar.
It's normal to make a wrong fret once, but bro, he doesn't even play in the correct key, the other guy has to show him how to play, not only that, the strange noises you hear are MISTAKES, those sounds sound when you play BADLY with a lot of gain. I mean, the guy plays so badly that he doesn't even step on the strings correctly, and then he makes the wrong chord, it's really a shame, Frehley used to play well, he wasn't EVH but he did something, now not even that.

I just recently rediscovered ace when I watched the 1996 reunion with kiss and have a renewed spark and appreciation of ace who seemed at his best in this period . But his recent stuff really is sub par and his stage presence and energy live today looks and feels like he really puts no effort into his performance. Zero energy I feel watching him , don't know what he's doing to prepare or personal challenges may be , but he's joining a list of rockers who are tarnishing their legacy by showing up not ready to give 100% for the fans who pay and support them. Gene and Paul seem to be right and justified in why they have parted.

Does anyone not remember the story about the dressing room where Ace was eating some nachos and Peter came right up to him and nearly knocked him unconscious by slapping his dong against his face? I think the story was Gene tried to run away but fell over in his clown shoes. I'm sure it was in Peter's book or Ace's can't remember.

Bob says he walked passed him going in to the recording room and Ace was just gurgling laughing to himself drooling in to the festering nachos.

On a show like this where there's maybe a thousand people there, he's probably making 10 grand, maybe 20 grand after expenses. If he does three or four of these a month, probably bringing home 100 grand. Sickening! He's not worth it.

You're drunker than Ace! You don't make more $ AFTER expenses! LMFAO Ace is playing to 400-700 seaters where tickets are around $30-40! Do the math, let's say it's a 700 seater and it's SOLD OUT that's $28K @ $40 a ticket! After the venue takes their cut, ticket agent fees, promoter gets his take, insurance, equipment rentals, unionized stage hands, all of Ace's crew, i.e. band members, stage manager, bus driver, FOH engineer, BOH, Ace's handler/manager takes his cut, merch and the list of guys with their hands out goes on and on, Ace will be lucky to take home $5K a night! Then you have to consider most shows are NOT a sell out and not 700 seat venues but more like 500 and tickets are $30 not the very generous $40x700 figures I used to educate you! How it really works is the promoter has a contract with Ace and Ace is guaranteed a flat fee and Ace has to pay his crew/staff out of that.
