That is exactly what I want off of my 3 car garage on the side of the house!! You are extremely talented to do such a quality job, I'm sure the $17.000 one would not be even close to what you did...WOW!!
That's so amazing Bill. My parents always say if you want something to get done right do it yourself. This save you a lot of green ones. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you Bill I did enjoy the video and you are correct you are never too old to do The things that you enjoy you are quite the Carpenter and A perfectionist for detail, Enjoy...!!!
I was just about ready to give up on this idea until I accidently came across your post. Thanks so much. Now I can SEE that this is actually do-able and I don't have to settle for second choice. Great job. It's beautiful!
OOOOH! YEAH!!!! My kind of MAN! As a former carpenter myself, I totally get it! I'm a do it yourself type of women, especially when I see the prices of certain thing's, I get really motivated to do it myself quickly! I just loved the end result's, plus the fly over by drone!! BOOOYA! GREAT JOB! I enjoyed the video very much thanks for sharing! Look's like I will be doing my own too, at those prices!
Thanks Billy for creating this excellent video and sharing your superb craftsmanship with us. You did a beautiful job and the economy of it is fantastic. Very inspiring! Next time you're in England let us know I'd be delighted to buy you a pint of ale. Thanks again.
That turned out great Billy. Not only did you save a bundle but you have the satisfaction of building it yourself. I'm going to guess after 7 days of work you were ready for some R&R in the back yard.
I noticed there was 832 people who didn't like this video,Or should I say,832 PEOPLE THAT WILL NEVER HAVE A PERGOLA LET ALONE BUILD ONE BA HA HA BA HA HA CHEERS TO YA
Not see if you will ever see this but i want d to say thank you for sharing this with the world. My problem is, I have the confidence to build one just don't have the know how. But that will change because I'm studying it now as we speak... But you have given me that extra juice to press forward! Thanks sir!
I'm a contractor and we build that Pergola for 6 to 8k depending on decoratives and other aspects. I think you shouldve got some other bids. 17k is someone taking you for a sucker and not a real company or contractor.
I agree with your comment, Lowe's home center, and Home Depot both bid this project and a local contractor, All were in a couple thou from each other. We were in the middle of reconstruction of home in the area after Hurricane Ike, and getting work like this done was hard to do. I was going to do the job myself anyway just wanted some bids. This video was not to bash contractors it's just to show you can do things yourself and save a little money. and by no means an instructional video. I filmed it for my grand kids to show them even at my age you can have fun building things. Thanks for you comments and have a great day.
This video was very helpful. I was building a pergola with similar dimensions to yours but I was struggling because of the soffit on my house. Most pergola build videos or pergola design plans show them out in a yard or are attached to a house without a soffit. This helped me so much on how/where to place my post and run my rafters. Thank for posting this!!!
Thanks for posting. I too had the same problem at first. I didn't want it attached to my house because I live in a hurricane area on the Gulf coast of Texas and I want this thing to come down it the winds get high and not damage my house. I have had my roof replaced since I built it and they had no problem getting under the over hang on the roof side. With the cross members bolted at the top it makes a very strong box and the structure is very rigid.
So a skilled craftsman can build his own pergola. Good work added some great value to your investment. But only a BADASS ends the video with a drone over the project and Bayou. Great job.
RelaxingHomestead Not sure about the skilled craftsman part I just have good tools to work with. I think almost anybody can do good work if they take their time and measure everything twice. Just at my age I'm tried of being ripped off for very little work and skill. Thanks for the comment about the drone I have been flying this thing for about a year and so I thought I would use it to finish the video, crashed twice before I got a good take. This project was a fun one and almost everything went well. The wife loved it "Happy wife happy life" Thanks for watching
Quick question if I may Mr. Stevens. I bought some property out in Liberty county on the river. If I build a small something it has to be on pilings. I noticed you have a few videos about driving pilings etc. I was curious what do you feel is the most cost effective way to build the piling/foundation? Is it simply wood with pointed end? Or is it worth going plastic. Property is in 100 year flood plane. Has to be min. building size of 1200 sq ft. If that makes a difference. Thanks
Yes, I've also read the comments, and I also recommend getting Woody Hyezmar’s Woodworking Bible. Last time I checked he was still giving it away on his site!
Finally! at 6:28 and when you are almost done, the neighbor or friend showed up to help, drink your beer, and criticized your work. lol...Excellent work, though.
As a remodeling contractor specializing in Porches. Decks and Trellis/Pergola's, I see one small issue that is often requested. The 2 x 2"s at the top, which provide the majority of the shade, are separated by too great a distance. Simply moving them to 6" apart would have more than doubled the shade effect. Ultimately, this is the purpose of the project....Yes?
It is my understanding that depending on the counties law, if a pergola is "detached" of the house no need for permission or inspection. Anyone agree or disagree?
It looks beautiful! We just bought a house with a nice backyard and huge pool. Looking for ideas like this. Definitely going to show this to my handy hubby!
Mr. Stevens You did an amazing job! Thanks for sharing. So curious as to how the camera person zoom in out & over the home like they were in an helicopter? So after reading the comments on how you zoomed in & out & over your home I see how it was done. So fantastic!
wow...that is awesome. beautiful job and good for you that you have the mindset of being never too old to do a job that big. I love your home and you dog too!
Almost anybody can watch you build it, but very few have the money, skills, interest and stamina to do it themselves. Knowledge about how to do things yourself is rapidly disappearing from the common mind. Thanks for the nice upload of this video.
Many people are just too lazy to put in the effort. It takes time and practice to become good at anything worthwhile in life and most just are too lazy. They want things easy. They don't want to exert any mental or physical effort, push through frustration, and hone skills by starting over after failures, so they'll never rise above "wishing" they could do it when they have within themselves everything needed to make it happen. Wasted lives.
Great job, this looks really nice with your property! I need shade for our dogs this summer but it costs way to much money for us. So we need to build something that we can afford. Thank you for putting this on RUclips so others can learn from you and what you did.
Hi Billy, I mean no disrespect even though comments on the internet can sound that way even if they are not meant to but in your remarks you had said "dont let anyone rip you off with some outrageous bid" and then "this video was not to bash contractors". That statement sounds contradictory. I woud like to say something to the public who has never operated a business. It costs money to run a quality business. Most quality contractors are going to charge the materials plus $1,000 per day +/- a few $$. That sounds like a lot of money but after you pay good, decent help and all of your indirect business expenses, your governemnt takes about 25% of whats left over so they can help support folks that dont want to work etc. And after all of that, the contractor just wants to make a decent living for all of his hard work, investment and knowledge/expertise/experience. Please keep in mind, when you call a for profit business, they are a business and not a charity organization like the salvation army, they are wanting to make a profit after it is all said and done.
Mike, I understand your point I also was a contractor working for the public and trying to make a living at one time in my life, and that was tuff. My statement meant if you have the ability to do the job yourself then do it and don't get old and lazy. ok, Mike D, not sure I follow the math...if Bill did it, basically by him self it appears, in 7 days?? So a contractor, with at least 1 helper should do in say 5 days? You said that roughly 1K a day, plus $2600 in material = $7600, not 13-17K...ok, round it up to an even 9K for misc......I agree with you both, contractor will have to make money, but please, lets rid of the gougers out there!!!!! Thx...………..
Hahaha!!! Great project. You could go out and contract to build this for someone and use this video to explain why you get $500.00 an hour labor. Aye??
WOW Billy, you're a beast. By the end of the video I was tired, and you were the one doing the work, I just watched. LOL. That is some Heavy Duty structure. Nice. Now my wife wants one...geez. Take Care.
To the critics, perhaps if he titled it, Building a Pergola, five days in 15 minutes (timelapse) that would help the idiots that thought anyone could actually build it in 15 minutes! Lol
Really I think the idiot comments are funny! There's always someone in the crowd that has one sense of humor. I don't do this video for money on RUclips, I did it for my grandkids They loved it!!!!!
You should paint it black or go with a darker stain like an espresso. That would contrast better with the color and style of your house. That stain you have now is nice but it's too golden.
Please tell me you didn't think you could build a Pergola of this size in 15 minutes. The video is 15 minutes long and it was showing everything from start to finish. Glad you liked it.
+Billy Stevens obviously your title was intriguing enough. Maybe it would have shown an awesomely skilled craftsman who CAN do it. Pagoda is good, title is still misleading
Excellent work and video. I am planning on building a large pergola so that we can get it exactly the size and shape we need. It's great to see and understand the process.
+Shaun Lewis like I said, it's an amazing job(I wish I was that talented). It looks nice with the house, but adding a paint job to match the house would've made it even more amazing. That's probably what I should've said at first
That is exactly what I want off of my 3 car garage on the side of the house!! You are extremely talented to do such a quality job, I'm sure the $17.000 one would not be even close to what you did...WOW!!
Love it. Your wife is a lucky lady!!!!
Beautiful. I put the footings in for mine before the rainy season. I am in the middle of painting and assembling mine now, before it gets to hot.
That's great! Those prices were outrageous, this is why I take matters into my own hands, that and because I enjoy making stuff. Good job.
Damn! That's the kind of grandpa I want to grow old to be! Handy and spry as hell! Good job!!!!!
