No one expected Lego Star Wars the video game to be such a slam dunk, but the most shocking thing about the Lego games was that they featured next to no voice acting. Now... they feature fully voiced scenes and dialogue ripped straight from the movies (Lego Avengers)... but hasn't some magic been lost in Lego Star Wars?
Featuring Obi-Wan, Luke, Anakin, Padme, Batman?! The Avengers and Doctor Who!

One of the best uses of movie dialogue in a lego game for me is in the Lord of the Rings game. When Sam and Frodo reach the black gate and the Easterlings are marching into Mordor, they stop and knock at the gate bringing a stack of pizzas, to which the orcs' response is "Looks like meat's back on the menu, boys!" Actually the Clone Wars was BY FAR one of my favourites in the whole series. It still had the much loved grunts, yet featured a MUCH larger hub to walk through(a vast improvement over the original hub), and Since I hadn't watched the Clone Wars yet, I had a lot of fun going on new adventures with my friends and overall the mechanics were VERY interesting. You basically were on a GIANT Venator star destroyer, you could use the hyperdrive and actually fly to new planets, you could use the onboard turrets, you could even get into starfighters and fly around the ship, killing enemies, and even go to the enemy ship itself. But by far my favourite mechanic was the ability to Launch Ground Assaults on the ground and basically play a sort of map wars, where you would fight for Area Control with your favourite vehicles. There were even a bunch of missions with that, and overall it was VERY immersive.

Voice acting can certainly have its charms aswell but theres a saying in germany that goes "not macht erfinderisch" which translates to "necessity is the mother of invention".
And i think this applies perfectly to the Lego games, restricting speech from the characters forced the devs to get creative with how they convey emotions and information, they couldnt just lazily add some lines, they had to actually TRY. And when you actually try the end result will more often be better than when youre lazy.
Its like how a bunch of old innovative games only were so innovative because of hardware limitations.

There are so many fun modes, fantastic levels, and the game just looks beautiful. I hope ground battles can be brought back into The Skywalker Saga, that was my favourite part of the game. I'd also love the Galactic Starship hub world to be brought back, that was so much fun to explore! There are people who prefer the older style of game, with a "hub world", no voice lines, goofy humor, not as many collectables, and less characters in order for each of them to be of value in some way. Then there are people who prefer the newer style of game, with an "open world", voice lines, immature comedy, loads of collectables, and tons of characters with plenty of variety in use and style. The one disappointing thing about it is that it wrapped up its story right as the actual show was getting good. I'm seriously hoping they have DLC or something planned to finish the Clone Wars saga, because seeing elements from that game expanded on would be good by itself, but being able to play storylines like the Umbara arc, Darth Maul's return and rise to power with Deathwatch and his crime syndicate, the stuff on Dathomir with Ventress, the Siege of Mandalore and order 66, and all the other great stuff in the Clone Wars? Yikes! If Skywalker Saga was meant to be their new flagship, then count me out of that sinking fleet.

The one thing I will say about Skywalker Saga talking is that they are entirely new voice actors. This means that it won't be that horrible isolated dialogue that we got with Avengers or Jurrasic Park. It also means they can probably tailor jokes and gags better to the dialogue and keep things more consistent. Idk.

    • @Double-R-Nothing
      @Double-R-Nothing 2 года назад +1

Bold of you to assume it was isolated. It sounds (in Avengers especially) like they just superimposed the movie over the cutscenes and left in background noise.

@@Double-R-Nothing yep. I only played the first two levels of the Lego Avengers game because of the terrible production quality. The audio inserts were extremely awkward and out of context. And gameplay-wise you just literally act out the movie, which gets boring quickly because the levels are 90% combat.

I think there’s a lot of benefit to letting Travelers Tales create new stories, and like you said the voice acting helps those stories tremendously. I think it’s especially beneficial when they do a gigantic crossover story like LEGO Dimensions (RIP) or even the LEGO Marvel Superheroes games, but also games like Lego City Undercover. But in terms of adaptation, well, I think adaptations (and also remakes and reboots) only work if they offer a completely new experience-and the mumbled and grunts are what offered that. The voices turn that brand new experience into a weaker version of the story you already know and love. If the experience isn’t as good, why spend your time with it instead of the one that you already know is great?

In terms of retelling established events in the Skywalker Saga, I believe Mumbles are a great option. After all we already know the story, and as Matt said in the video we just want to play through and immerse ourselves in the stories throughout the saga.
The Benefit of the Lego Skywalker Saga is the clone wars Series Actors being involved, so even if there are jokes that don’t land, at least we still get to hear those amazing voices being put into the prequels. As for the other Voice replacements, it will definitely be hit or miss depending on the casting choices.

The comedy needs to be "smarter" with mumbles. I can tell you, "I'm sad" with a deadpan face and you'll know I'm sad, but if im sat in the corner hands on face, elbows on my knees, you can feel it .
It might be harder to make that style of comedy work, but it is a great emotional weight added to a game, comedy or not

Nah, Lego TFA brought most of the casts back to do new voice acting. Its how we got Masochistic Kylo actually voiced by Adam Driver.

@VIBIN JOTARO I'm honestly just indifferent. Both are fine, I loke the creativoth of mumbling, but like the effort put into most of the voiced games (Minus Lego Avengers, LOTR, Hobbit and certain Dimensions levels)

Recently I've been playing through the LEGO Lord of the Rings game, it shows that TT have gotten much better at recontextualising voice lines, but it still pales a little relative to the glory of the mumble.

If they redo the cutscenes would definitely play with mumbles, however taking a voiced cutscene then just replacing the duologue wouldn't work the same

Now, I didn't play all the Lego Games but out of all the games that have voice lines, the only one I actually felt like it worked(and it worked really well) was Undercover, probably because this one is telling an original story instead of a parody, so the humour feels pretty natural.

My issue with fully voiced lego games is that they try to include both visual and spoken gags, yet neither end up succeeding because they rarely blend together.

No way will a mumble toggle turn out well. They aren’t going to reanimate and rewrite every joke/scene, to have it be visually funny. It would just be the same game with no talking.

I agree that the voice clips pulled straight from the movies can be jarring sometimes, that being said my favourite moment from lego lord of the rings is where a pizza gets delivered to the black gate and an orc looks over and says “ looks like meat’s back on the menu boys”
