Conquering my BIGGEST FEAR in the Netherlands (Maastricht) 🇳🇱
Thank you all so much for your support ❤️ I was very nervous to post this video but you are all so kind and understanding and supportive.
We really enjoyed this new story style of video and want to know - What should I/we try to learn next? 🤔🥰
Love you all! ❤️
She learnt how to ride the bike and then crossed to an entirely different country, all within the same day. That was so cool👍😄supportive Wyatt persistent Reyka.
Dawww thank you so much!! 🥰 it was really scary (as you can tell) but so worth it… for the fries hahaha. And also now I can ride a bike which is really convenient! We already road one again in our next country 🥰
Wyatt we seriously wanna commend you for seriously how supportive you were the whole time. Also Reyka, amazing job! We are proud of you!
Reyka did all the work hahaha it was my pleasure to be there for the whole process. You guys are so sweet. 🥰❤️
Cheers to meeting up eventually 🤗
So proud of you Reyka!!! Now you’ll always be able to say you learned to ride a bike while in the Netherlands. ❤
Thanks so much friend! It was such a memorable day for sure🥰❤️
If you give cycling lessons, it is better if you ride behind the student +/- 2 m and 0.5 m to the left so that you shield the student and also see what the student is doing.
Best regards
Frits
I’ll remember that next time! Thankfully reyka’s got it down pretty good now but you never know who’ll need to practice 🥰🤗
Not being able to ride a bike if you are not a Dutchie is NOT an embarassment. You picked it up fairly quickly I see. It is just a matter of finding your balance and getting a bit of confidence. Before you know it you ride like the rest of us, without thinking and without fear. You got this. :) Much love from Utrecht.
Thank you so much! Comments like these make me feel so supported❤️Take care🥰🥰
fun fact, belgium had 2 sides, Vlaanderen and Walonie. Its split down the middle to be honest. The Vlaanderen side has Dutch as an official languege and Walonie French.
im impressed with how fast Reyka went from never riding a bike to just casually riding. Most people fall off at least a few times. my respect!
Thank you so much!! That is so sweet of you ❤️🥰 it was hard and difficult but I really had a good time with it 🤗
great achievement Reyka just move to Limburg then you can cycle as much and often in the Netherlands and eat fries in Belgium haha
Thank you so much!! 🥰❤️
Hahahaha we may just have to do that! Really appreciate your support. Feeling ready to keep practicing!
Fun video, it feels weird for dutch people that someone can't ride a bike (or swim) but it happens more than you think for new people into our country and gets people into trouble. These are 2 skills you need to get under control quickly esp. for kids. You got it under control way quicker than most and its fun to see how much you are moving the steering bar to correct yourself since its not become something that your brain does on the fly in the background that will only happen after a few days. Keep riding its the way of the future ...
You are so kind. ❤️ Yeah, it seems like even super young kids know how to ride a bike in the Netherlands haha.
Cheers to practicing more and coming back to cycle around the country! 🥰 it will definitely be cool to always say that I learned how to ride a bike in such an iconic place
Crossing the border on the leftside was a stone column, That is the border-marker.
Thanks for telling us we must have missed it haha😂 take care🥰
Hi it took me a while to digest all the fun u share on these vids, but am back…🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤❤❤
Let’s go!!! We are map excited to have you here with us 🥰❤️
What’s your name??
Awesome 😊)
Thank you so much!!! This was a personal to share so I’m really glad to know you enjoyed it 🤗❤️
I (Brandon) am 35 years old, and also don't know how to ride a bike- soooo you're not alone. 😂
Anja really wants to teach me. Good on you for doing it! I really want to learn as well. It's never too late. 🤓
And is just me, or were you able to ride a bike in your dreams? Cuz I always could.😂
Daw you are so sweet. I was feeling particularly vulnerable sharing this on the internet but folks are so kind and supportive. 🥰
Haha I’ve never biked in my dreams but maybe now i will 🤗
You should give biking a try! Its truly a wonderful way to get around once you get on it ❤️
I've been riding bicycles for 45 years, had to mostly give it up (going from being able to ride 20-25km non-stop easily to getting serious pain in my knees after a few hundred meters) because of joint problems and lost a lot of inherent stability which makes it awkward at times. You're doing great for a first timer.
Sorry to hear about your injury. After riding bikes for so long, I bet that was hard to give up. ❤️
Thank you very much for the encouragement. I hope to continue practicing and get better and do longer bike trips in the future. We are even considering trying to cross Europe on a bike all of next summer haha. From dust to glory, I suppose 😂
Riding a bike is hard because you have to learn how to countersteer.
Most cyclists don't even realise they are doing this, its completly intuitive.
But if you want to turn right, the first thing you do is actually steer left for a very short moment to start the turn.
Super interesting. Yeah. It’s crazy how intuitive skills become after some time and practice 🤯
Can't come to the Netherlands without riding a bike. Well done girl👍👍👍
Thank you 🥹❤️
Really good that you learned to ride the bike that well in one day. And yes, the Belgians are renowned for their Frites (fries), but the frites in the Dutch part of Limburg are good as well.
I'm from the area, living 15 miles east of Maastricht, the river by the way is not a river, it is the Albert canal named to the Belgian king Albert and built around 100 years ago.
The river Maas or Meuse in French goes trough the middle of Maastricht but forms the border between Netherlands and Belgium outside the city.
Dawww thank you so much 🥰🤗 those frites are insaaaaaanely tasty lol
Legit the ease you learned to bike is very impressive not even most dutchies learn it that fast very proud of you. And can i Just mention that you learned biking on a dutch bike with peddle breaks that's not something that should be unnoticed ❤️❤️🇳🇱🇳🇱
You are so sweet!!! 🥹🥹🥹 it was a bit scary posting this video but the encouragement I’ve gotten has been so heartwarming. And peddle brakes are weirdly easier for me hahaha.
Cheers and take care! 🥰 I really appreciate the support!
@@WyattandReyka well you did amazingly. Very proud that you learned it in our tiny country. Please keep biking
It was my pleasure, truly. The Netherlands is beautiful!! 🥰🤗 we can’t wait to come back. Which part are you from?
@@WyattandReyka i'm from the southern part north Brabant near Eindhoven wich is actually where the tech giant Philips was founded aka the light city. If you guys are ever in the netherlands again Eindhoven is a beutiful big city with lots of art, nature and amazing food.
Eindhoven!! Amazing. We stopped at the Eindhoven train terminal on our way from Efteling to Maastricht where we filmed this video 🥰🤗 next time we will stop and stay for a bit longer! 👍
I can only applaud you for not trying to learn how to ride a bicycle in Amsterdam. It seems you had a lot of fun in Limburg :) I hope the saddle pain wasn't to bad the next day!
Had a ton of fun! Very good time 🥰🤗
Saddle pain was rough hahaha. Lasted a couple days my legs are not used to this!
Reyka cycles fine! Bravo! incl. the famous mr. Wyatt E. too!
Thank you so much!! 🥰❤️ and lol yeah that’s who I’m named after. Cheers thanks for the support
Top marks for the cycling. Nice one. Re Belgium, it's a North/South split with the languages. Dutch in the North and French in the South. You'd have had to go a fair way South to have heard some French!
Thank you so much! It was scary but very fun 🥰
And languages makes sense a lot! I naively thought that right when we crossed the border the language would change hahaha
That wasn't that bad an assumption to make. Belgium having two languages threw you a curveball. I kinda knew that both were spoken, but didn't really pay attention to what was spoken where 'til I went there for work. If you're still in the area, go back over for a beer. Belgian beer is out of this world.
We will!! Cheers and thanks for the nice words. We’re back in the U.S. now, but next time we’re on that side we’ll try it out
You did great, saying this as a Dutch man. Nothing embarrassing, just good. Well done.
Though that wss a canal, not a river. A d I think the fun part is left out: the steep hill you needed to climb.
Thank you so much!! And yeah we know now that that was a canal. Interesting how big the difference is in the Netherlands. In the US most of these terms are pretty flexible 🤗
@@WyattandReyka anyway, as log as you enjoyed your stay and ride. Come back some time 👍🏻
You're doing great. 👍
Thank you so much! Your support means a lot🥰🥰
please put the ball of the foot (the area just past the toes) on the pedal, which allows for the ankle to work as a lever. Much lighter work to pedal a bicycle that way.
We will next time!! Thank you 🥰❤️🤗
08:18 Frietje met een grietje (fries with a girl), it rhymes in Dutch.
Definitely a potential song gold mine right there
You've just ridden into Vlaanderen (Flanders), which is the northern Dutch speaking part of Belgium. The southern French speaking part is called Wallonië./Wallonia.....
Thanks for the info! Vlaanderen seems absolutely wonderful! We hope to spend more time in Belgium / The Netherlands in the near future 🤗
🎼I saw 🎶the sign.🎵 How do you know you crossed the border, well at 5 minutes 22 seconds in to the vlog you see a cone-shaped boulder-like pillar from approximately 1 meter high. That's the borderline and you see them at every crossing with a border in Europe. They will be slightly different shaped depending on the country you go into.
That’s so interesting! So different for us Americans to have so many borders hahaha 🥰 cheers thank you!
@@WyattandReyka no thanks needed. I always love to help the unknown 🙂😉
RUclips algorithm brought me here.
You did real good. Practice makes perfect.
Northern Belgium is mostly 'Dutch' (Vlaams) speaking. Though from Limburg you could hit the German speaking part across that border too I guess.
Ps. There's a hefty fine for cycling while holding your phone. Assuming that's what you used for those shots.
We’re so glad that it did! 🥰🤗 you are so supportive. We really appreciate it and I’m excited to continue practicing and getting better.
We’ll definitely be careful to not do that in the future to be safe and to avoid that fine. Gotta save up and buy a GoPro haha. Cheers! Thanks for the message 🥰❤️
You're a natural cyclist I'm Dutch and needed sevaral days to learn to bike
Daw thank you so much!! 🥰🥰 you are too kind
Courageous, stay careful in traffic ! Despite the wonderful cycling infrastructure... cars are still very hard like steel.
Thanks so much for the supportive and sweet comment! It made me smile! 🥰
the grey pole on the side of the road was the sign! (borderpole)
Thank you!! 🥰 we loved biking around the netherlands
What's also seemingly weird is the idea that you cross over international borders with no border guards, or barriers, or papers being demanded. That just blows my mind whenever I think about it.
Ours too! It is crazy! It felt wrong for sure haha😂
Well done! Riding a bicyle when you are not used to it can be very scary. And dangerous.
There is not a difference between Dutch and Belgian fries. The mayo makes the biggest difference.
Dutch mayo has less of a sour kick to it. I like both though...
Thank you so much for your support!! 🥰❤️ we really appreciate it.
It was scary to learn and post this but both have gone well so far so we’re glad to have made this. Cheers and take care 🥰❤️
That is not a river. It is a canal. It runs almost behind my back yard in Maastricht. Nice that Reyka managed to ride that far. I guess she had real saddle pain coming home that evening. Belgium fries (frite) are alway fried twice. Crispy outside and fluffy inside.
Oh that’s awesome!! 🥰 it’s such a beautiful place you are lucky to live there. We’re excited to visit Maastricht again eventually!
I am a 37 year old Dutchman, and till this day I still have moments on my bike that I am terrified by big busses and trucks with trailers passing me.
It can be so scary! One twitch of their hands and you are just squished on the road! Cheers to staying safe out there! 🥰
It’s easier to bike on a bicycle with a smaller handlebars. Reyka’s hanlebars are too broad so that she has more trouble staying upright and also steering is too much fuss. Try a bike with a smaller handlebars. You will find it eazier. Enjoy! From a Mastrichtian!
Thank you so much! Next time we will keep that in mind. Mastering biking seems like a whole process hahaha 🤗🥰
Thank you so much! Next time we will keep that in mind. Mastering biking seems like a whole process hahaha 🤗🥰
you have a beautiful voice that accompanies her!!😂
Thank you!! 🥰❤️ it was really fun for me personally to watch reyka improve as time went on. Hoping she keeps wanting to practice and get better 🙏
🤗🤗
❤️ thank you 🤗
For foreigners living in the Netherlands and are afraid to get on the bike. Ask your neighbors! 9 out of 10 would be happy to help and teach you.
Just ask, simple as that.
We should have!! And anyone reading this who wants to learn should as well.
It was cool. Just biking around Maastricht, the locals were extremely supportive telling me to be careful and that I could do it. 🥰❤️
Excited to keep practicing to go on longer trips. We’re even thinking of trying to cross all of Europe next summer on bikes 😳
@@WyattandReyka I remember one summer evening, pretty much the whole neighborhood was sitting outside and a bit further down the street there was this guy from Somalia. He was hesitant with a bike by his side, looking around not certain what he should be doing. His neighbors also sitting outside picked up on that and decided to help him out. I went back inside to grab myself a cold one and I returned a few minutes later. By that point there were like 5 people helping him out and not much later biking along with him. I thought that was really awesome and kind hearted.
Wow. What an awesome thing to witness. With such readiness to help, I’m not surprised most Dutch know how to ride bikes. 🥰
Is swimming popular in the Netherlands too?? 🤔
@@WyattandReyka It's safe to say 95% of the dutch know how to ride a bike. I've never met a dutch person whom didn't ride a bike from early childhood on. Same goes with swimming. We've all had swimming lessons (school) for multiple years. It was mandatory and a part of our education system. Current day it's voluntarily (a really bad thing if you ask me) so yeah if parents can't afford lessons the kid is out of luck
Don’t be embarrassed about something you never learnt we have all been in this situation
So sweet! Thank you 🥹🥹 I really appreciate you ❤️
It’s not a river but a canal . The Albert Canal
Oops sorry about that! The canal was SO PRETTY though like wow🤩 thanks for watching!
@@WyattandReyka it was nice to see that you came to Belgium. you can cycle along the Albert Canal after Liège from Maastricht. Mom, I can also recommend the most beautiful village in Flanders, Oud Rekem. also within walking distance of Maastricht
;9 wow. nice video. I can not stop smiling .What have you done to me? i am serious swede. but maybe good to take a rest from to much serious. anyways keep em coming;9 I need more. Thanx both of your wonderful couple.
Hey jan!! Daw thank you so much 🥰❤️🥰❤️ YOU are so sweet. We really enjoyed posting this vlog and are really glad it landed well. Hope you are having a great day!
5:35 "I don't see any sign, though... Are we in Belgium?" *ROTFL* You just have passed the border-marker (grenspaal), but haven't noticed it... (5:26)
Oops!! Haha 🥰🤗
Nice you mastered riding a bike! Than had some fries but really? Do they still use plastic containers in Belgium?? By the way, the best fries are freshly made and not the frozen ones 😂
Good to know!! And thank you so much 🥰❤️🤗 we are very excited to go in more biking adventures
ما شاء الله
Thank you!! 🙏 😜
The title made it sound like your biggest fear in the Netherlands is Maastricht😂😂😂
Hahahaha yeah we’re terrified of Maastricht lololol
I saw in this clip more traffic calming then in the entire USA lol
What is traffic calming? And thanks for watching so many of our videos 🤗
@@WyattandReyka visual and practical tricks in the design of the road to slow down traffic (mostly cars) for example making the road narrow will slow people down, speed-bunmps, use of colors,, bricks, adding s-curves. The trick is not just to put a sign up that states 30km but to provide hints the brain picks up that a slower speed is needed. The reserve is also true its a known fact that if you make a road wider and strait you invite people to go faster.
So her dad gave up on trying to teach her when she was 13 or 14, and now she's what, 16? She looks very young! Yeah Ok, maybe a little bit older than that. I never get people like that or the parents actually. It's just hard to imagine. Riding a bike starting as a very young kid is something you learn comparable to potty training or walking or playing catch (for a boy). How does that get missed? Firstly in her case, how did it get missed when she was five or six? Even if you're not riding to grade school, you're riding with friends all over messing about. My dad was a hard taskmaster about some things. Spelling and math for instance. But I don't remember anything really hard about his teaching me to ride a bike. Of course most of us had training wheels for a while then, and trikes or Big Wheels. That was one thing. The orientation related to that. I guess there was always Dr. Spock telling parents when things should be happening too. A childhood without bikes? Just unimaginable.
Yeah for me (wyatt) it’s kinda crazy as I also grew up on bikes. But I suppose all of us have gaps in our knowledge. Some can’t swim. Some can’t read. And some can’t bike! It’s cool when in adulthood we don’t become ashamed of these gaps but embrace them and learn these things! 🥰🤗 cheers mate!
Good observation then.
You've got guts......l..
Thank you 🥰🤗
Dutch children first learn to walk and then they are immediately put on a bicycle.
Makes sense! Gotta start ‘em young 😂🥰
It looks like her seat is to low....
Yeah someone else said the same thing!! 🤔 maybe we’ll bring it up next time we ride 👍🤗
@@WyattandReyka When see sits on the bike and the peddle is down, her leg / knee should not be bend..
limburg = belgium ? its like going to china and talk russian 🤣
Hahaha u mean when we spoke French in Belgium? 🤔
Also, we’re going to try that next time we’re in china
You can lose your visa if the govt. finds out you can't ride a bike . you should take this video down immediately .
Is that true? That’s wild! Even though she can ride one now?
NOO 😂
Sorry , bad british humor .
Lol we were floored. Cheers from across the pond we're back home now! 🤗
Yeah and brush your teeth
Always brush your teeth twice a day! 😂
Omg when you greeted the guy at Riemst, why did you say "Bonjour"? Hahahaha you are on the Flemish side, they still speak Dutch there :)
Hahaha got it. The last time I was in Belgium they spoke French, and I forgot about the regional language situation hahaha
@@WyattandReykaYou were very close to the french speaking part. If you had continued south across the bridge over the Albert canal the next village is already french speaking.
