Travis Willingham (OOC) when Pike is reading the letter: "Nobody look! Nobody look! *chastising his wife* Don't you look!" HE IS SO PRECIOUS WE DON'T DESERVE HIM
I wonder if it actually did anything, though. Matt was already about to rule on Pike's Resurrection Ritual before Taliesen piped up, and they didn't discuss what happened during the face-off, so who knows if Percy's intimidation actually mattered. I choose to interpret in-world narrative events as Percy forcing Craven Edge to release Grog's soul and Pike putting it back into Grog's body, but the real-world narrative doesn't make that clear, unfortunately.
@@Sir_Poohheart I would say it kinda does. Matt was about to rule when Taliesin piped in, but chooses to stop, let Percy do what he is doing before making finishing that scene. He jump cuts mid explanation. If you watch enough of Mercer, especially this far in, and likely off unfortunate training from an unfortunate dragonborn player, he is a master of spotlight sharing but also not splitting the spotlight when it shouldn't be or narratively doesn't make sense. He decided to let Percy do this because Percy was interacting with the foil here, the object that had taken Grog's Soul, directly, and so he pauses mid scene resurrection, about to rule, everyone's contributed what they are going to contribute under his house rules of how bringing the dead back works, and yet for this instance, for this specific interaction, for someone choosing to engage in some sort of direct social attempt to deal with the sentient blade, he jump cuts midscene, lets percy go through this, and then comes back. Its so smoothly done that we don't know if it changed the outcome. But because of how smoothly its done and the conscious choice to include this at all, and to not finish a scene, to give Percy a spot under that spotlight, that to me ultimately suggests that, while we will never know if Grog would have been returned to life without the direct confronting of the weapon, or perhaps the blade would have manifested a presence similar to Orthax the party would have had to vanquish first to get their friend back, it suggests that what Percy did, at minimum, insured a smooth transition if nothing else. Insured a level of compliance, if not outright agreement. You are right we can never truly know how much it helped, but I don't think Mercer interrupts the scene without finishing it mid attempted resurrection unless it absolutely did not have some measurable effect and some potential consequence if it went real bad.
Looks like the crew disagreed, they completely took it out of the animated show and separated Percy from Grog. I'm wondering if Tal just wants to hide animation Percy's darker abilities a bit, and not out them asap but idk.
@@drizzt102 As I've watched more, I absolutely agree with your take. Furthermore, coming back here from a fair few episodes ahead because I've been binging the shit out of this series, and I think it can be fairly confidently said that Percy was absolutely instrumental in this. In a very similar circumstance when a certain character is killed and his soul trapped inside an object and hungrily fed on by a demon, the resurrection ritual couldn't work until the demon was purged and the character's soul released from the object by a Greater Restoration spell. In this instance, they tried using revivify without first breaking the soul binding curse via Greater Restoration, which means that the *only** avenue of Grog's soul actually being released from Craven Edge was by Percy's confrontation. Now, it could still well be that Matt wasn't thinking about that and was going to allow for Grog's resurrection regardless, but based on how a virtually mechanically identical type of situation has to be resolved later on, Percy's efforts were definitely a latchkey variable from an in-world narrative perspective, at the very least.
@@frostreaper1607 I mean, the show has to be more a lot more deliberate with character deaths and resurrection. In the actual organic DnD campaign it's inevitably going to happen from time to time, but the show has to take greater care so that deaths don't lose narrative weight or destroy the stakes. Changing Grog's climax with Craven Edge was done because it's by far the least consequential death of the series, both in-world and for the players, and would only really serve to reduce the value of *FAR* more impactful and dramatic deaths later on. They changed it in the show because it was overall better for the characters and the story, not because they wanted to hide Percy's dark side.
To the people complaining that the crew's metagaming when they all suddenly know that the sword is responsible: If you live in a world where magic is real and one of your closest friends is acting weird for over a week, talking very obviously to a sword that previously belonged to a vampire and follower of a dark god, that you have seen suck in the blood of its victims, emanate shadowy tendrils and grow in size suddenly and that has been called a "dark weapon" by an extremely powerful servant of another god and your friend has been showing signs of unrest and sleeplessness recently, then I think it's no far stretch to suspect the sword if that friend suddenly collapses dead without apparent reason.
marisha and taliesin metagame every show, nothing new it seemed like, the only person that ever got called out about it has already been removed from the cast
Let's not forget: Percy had the sword first and communicated with it. Scanlan has touched and communicated with it. Both have very openly gone to other party members to keep an eye on Grog and the sword, specifically. Several party members have also directly insight-checked Grog regarding the sword which he has failed to counter. To say anyone is metagaming regarding the sword at this point has not been paying attention.
@@Astraay some people (and I think we know who) are never happy unless they're trying to make other people miserable. Laura's genuine concern at Travis' character potentially being perma-dead is pretty adorable. When Matt points out that the window for Revivify is right on the bubble, she basically pleads with him, haha. And Travis is just sitting there shell-shocked.
Travis's nervous smiling throughout the whole thing was really cute. It was that perfect combo of "I did this to myself," excitement about the ritual, and genuine worry.
I love how when any of them are "dead" or down they immediately just be quiet like they don't interact with what they're doing around them at all they just sit and watch to see what happens 😅

Thats a no brainer for them though... many shows add in stuff from personal experiences for certain characters, gives em a more lifelike backstory. @@zacharydunn6577 That's a bummer that they wasted time and energy on something that shouldn't have happened. I'm sure I've made similar mistakes, so I can't get that mad at them.
Here's what the sword actually did: "Gluttonous Evolution: If Craven Edge devours enough strength from Devour the Weak to bring the wielder to 25 Strength, then the blade shifts form into a larger, jagged blade that seeps shadow. Until the wielder's next short rest or long rest, all attacks with this sword deal an additional 2d6 necrotic damage. After the short rest, the attuned creature must make a Constitution saving throw (DC 16) or have the now-hungry weapon, energy spent, devour the wielder's soul, causing instant death." So if he had not rolled 16 or higher he would have died instantly. This is why he shouldn't have pushed it to all its strength. He had it coming 😂
I love that Matt killed Reggie. It makes so much sense. It was super irresponsible of them to leave the situation how they did and that was a gentle reminder that they actions have consequences. Just got done binge watching "Legends of Vox Machina". Loved that they stayed true to the campaign and characters. Time to binge watch all of Vox Machina again.
Wow, since I'm on the 50th episode mile mark, I just wanted to point out how much critical role has changed D&D. Just one stream with the simple idea of "voice actors rolling dice" has brought the game a new public face. SO many people have started hosting their own sessions, including me, after seeing how much fun can be brought to the table. A group of friends laughing, having an adventure together, and having a good time is a beautiful thing and is the contrary to what so many people thought (or think of) of a tabletop RPG. Before, I was disgusted by what it sounded like, but after watching just one episode of Critical Role my entire perspective was changed. 50 Episodes later, I'm the DM of my own written campaign for a group of friends and it wouldn't have been possible without this show.
rttryui Congrats on your campaign! It really is incredible to think the first episode of CritRole now has over 4 MILLION views. Also congrats getting this far. Getting caught up with Episode 100 looming (at the time of this writing) is a mind boggling time commitment. Once you're caught up, consider dropping by and saying hi on the Reddit! Cheers, Critter.
I think with this group, DCA before it fell apart, and Acquisitions Incorporated, D&D has blown up the last few years. AI has been rocking for over 10 years and doing huge live games for so many cons. Then the weekly shows like this and The C Team took up the mantle. It’s a great time for nerds people. We run the world now
Matt's getting emotional after reading a letter he got at 4:09:36 was so pure of him and it made a whole lot of sense after you watch his Behind The Sheets episode when talking about how he didn't initially think that CR would mean that much to anyone until fans point it out through their personal struggle. Dude's got a really big heart. (4:08:52 for the letter)
I made it to Episode 50. This is my first watch and I am just loving it. Legend of Vox Machina just launched last week and I was just happy that the show was featuring the Briarwood arc and I could enjoy it without spoilering myself.
I started me rewatch a while back and decided hitting this milestone episode was a good place to share. A friend of mine told me of CR a bit after I got out of the military. My plans had fallen through, was going through divorce less than a year after marriage, pretty much find a stereotype and I was there. Watching this group of friends I was laughing my ass off one minute and on the edge of my seat caught in repeated epic moments. I started considering playing and an old friend just up and called me saying "Hey our D&D group lost a member, you wanna join?" About two years later I'm part of two groups, run my own and am putting together a game for my nephew. I've got a better paying job and an amazing girlfriend who also plays. CR wasn't the only major thing to help me pull myself out, but it was a big chunk together with D&D and the great people I play with. So thank you CR for what your show has helped me do.
I love that Sam almost always has a huge smile on his face, even during serious moments. Everyone talks about Ashley being a ray of sunshine, but have you seen this guy? Gah, I wanna hug him
(The following comment contains episode spoilers.) I like that when the characters make less-than-ideal decisions - though they can be difficult to watch when you're invested in the story and want things to go well! - they're always in-character, and you can almost always understand their reasoning. When the half-elves get annoyed about the rest of the group keeping the Craven Edge stuff from them, it isn't a very big-picture view, and sounds really petty in the moment. But it makes sense that shortly after almost losing one of their number (again), they would be hurting and angry at the idea that if that information was shared sooner, the group could have dealt with it together and prevented Grog's (temporary) death. And when Vax cuts down the Reginald scarecrow, Percy's right - it was not a good idea (though they got useful information out of it). But again, as a largely well-intentioned but impulsive (and frankly, dramatic) person, it makes sense for Vax to do it. 1) From the moment he sees Reginald, he thinks they're screwed anyway, so he's no longer giving any thought space to keeping the element of surprise. (Whilst Percy, less impulsive and more strategic, thinks it through to realise they may still have it if they're careful.) 2) Vax probably doesn't want to leave a good man up there to rot so disrespectfully, like Keyleth says. Note that he also buried the dead at the orc-camp. 3) He's confronted by the guilt of VM's part in Reginald's death, and his gut reaction is to use it as a reminder to everyone of what's at stake, and how easily their plans can cause collateral damage if they get it wrong. (It's a little ironic that cutting down Reginald is the same kind of 'well-intentioned-but-poorly-planned' action as the one that got him killed, i.e. taking out Horace without a plan to immediately deal with the other goliaths. But in that moment, I doubt Vax is self-aware enough to realise that.) Anyway: my point is that this show's strength isn't always when the characters make good decisions - it's when they make honest ones, true to their ideals and their flaws. I personally think that these honest decisions (even those which lead to frustrating situations!) help make these characters very real to the audience, and thereby make their story all the more engrossing.
I am like a year late, but I agree with everything you wrote. The Critical Role players are very genuine to their characters, it makes them feel real. Clearly I am a few years behind and catching up is hard when every episode is 3-4 hours long and then I spend another hour reading comments... Plus they keep creating new episodes. I should catch up to them by 2025.
It took me like 30 mins of rewatching them banish the sword before i finally realized it was Liam doing the little “help meeeeeeee” that was slick and hilarious
I think the fact that everyone was able to so accurately cosplay as their own characters just shows how much they all patterned them after themselves, at least appearance-wise. xD
In the Q&A / FFA special episode, between episode 44 and 45 or something, it's on the geek and sundry site, Matt talks briefly about endings, and such. I remember it as he mentions that they probably will end when they reach lvl 20, but then start over from lvl 1. So Vox Machina will end at some point, not I think they'll reach at least 50 more before going up that many lvls.

If you live in a world where magic is real and one of your closest friends is acting weird for over a week, talking very obviously to a sword that previously belonged to a vampire and follower of a dark god, that you have seen suck in the blood of its victims, emanate shadowy tendrils and grow in size suddenly and that has been called a "dark weapon" by an extremely powerful servant of another god and your friend has been showing signs of unrest and sleeplessness recently, then I think it's no far stretch to suspect the sword if that friend suddenly collapses dead without apparent reason.
marisha and taliesin metagame every show, nothing new it seemed like, the only person that ever got called out about it has already been removed from the cast
Gotta love when you explain very well how it is NOT metagaming and get the person who responds with "Yeah they always metagame".
Dost850 Peak Idiocy right here
Let's not forget: Percy had the sword first and communicated with it.
He had 2 points of exhaustion, right? That first point gives disadvantage to ability checks, not saving throws. He should have gotten that 20.
Nevermind, I forgot about the point he got after the sphinx confrontation. Poor Grog.
@@Dimloep he didn't get a point in the sphinx encounter because he didn't frenzy rage, so he was only at 2 and shouldn't have been rolling disadvantage on saving throws, but he must not have realized that because he did it all last episode too.

Here's what the sword actually did:
"Gluttonous Evolution: If Craven Edge devours enough strength from Devour the Weak to bring the wielder to 25 Strength, then the blade shifts form into a larger, jagged blade that seeps shadow. Until the wielder's next short rest or long rest, all attacks with this sword deal an additional 2d6 necrotic damage. After the short rest, the attuned creature must make a Constitution saving throw (DC 16) or have the now-hungry weapon, energy spent, devour the wielder's soul, causing instant death."
So if he had not rolled 16 or higher he would have died instantly. This is why he shouldn't have pushed it to all its strength. He had it coming 😂

I like that when the characters make less-than-ideal decisions - though they can be difficult to watch when you're invested in the story and want things to go well!
(Whilst Percy, less impulsive and more strategic, thinks it through to realise they may still have it if they're careful.)
2) Vax probably doesn't want to leave a good man up there to rot so disrespectfully, like Keyleth says.
But in that moment, I doubt Vax is self-aware enough to realise that.)
Anyway: my point is that this show's strength isn't always when the characters make good decisions - it's when they make honest ones, true to their ideals and their flaws.
@@testfire3000 It can be hard to make bad decisions that are in character but this group does it well.
"What do you mean it's a *role-playing* game? I wanna win at D&D! Why aren't they right all the time, what idiots!"

Reached Episode 50 of Critical Role. +50 Nerd Cred.

Does running a session give me any
Does running a session give you any?
Does running a session give us any?
Screw asking questions and do sessions already, y'all.
We're already full-blown nerds at this point.
It took me like 30 mins of rewatching them banish the sword before i finally realized it was Liam doing the little “help meeeeeeee” that was slick and hilarious
I love how happy Taliesin gets when Grog brings up the idea of scheming and drawing the enemies out. He looks like a kid on Christmas.
I think the fact that everyone was able to so accurately cosplay as their own characters just shows how much they all patterned them after themselves, at least appearance-wise. xD
To the next 50 episodes and more! :D
Here here!!!
I just started watching Critical Role about a month ago and have been a long time sub on your channel! I did not expect you to be a fan, and I agree, to 50 more!

That look when Travis rolled a, "1" though. Honest game play there. Kudos to that.
My heart stopped then and then the game became so intense. It was amazing to watch this. And an end to the Craven Edge story (for the time being maybe)
+Rhys Causon Yes! I love how Travis just sat there and looked on, not saying anything. So was Liam's talking to the Raven Queen part of the ritual? That part confused me because I thought she opted out so did they not need one more person to contribute something?
+G Garcia to me it seemed that he unwillingly accepted to be her servant if she would save Grog somehow, but it seems as though the Raven Queen didn't want to help. At least that's what I got from that bit.
+G Garcia In Mercer's game you get 3 chances to help, if it fails you don't get another shot and it makes the save a bit harder. Vax failed to convince her, so we'll see how that goes.
