    I just upgraded from the Oculus Rift CV1 which came out in 2016, the difference is honestly insane. I think the overall tracking was better on the original rift for PCVR games, but having to use the sensors was a nightmare and made me not want to use it.
    While playing games standalone on the Quest 3 though the experience is unlike anything I've seen before, and for the price it's a truly remarkable piece of equipment.

      Totally. Quest 3 is comparing very favourably. I'm so conflicted about the Vision Pro. On the one hand, it's a generational leap ahead of Quest 3, gives a massive boost to the VR industry, and validates that this kind of tech is going to become better and more popular over the next few years. On the other hand, as someone who doesn't own any other Apple devices, and considering the price, I can't see myself getting one.

      @@VRLowdown Well certainly not 1st gen when that is used for beta testing the features, the bugs & long term use problems that will occur. After the initial hype there will be murmurings of the problems & that is why no one should buy one - especially at the gen 1 price. Think of it like an early access game, the ppl buy it because of the hype & yet it is full of bugs. Meanwhile the people who waited a years, 2 years can get an updated gen 2 with at least most of the problems addressed. It is not an essential piece of kit, it doesn't do anything a an iPhone, Mac, iPad iWatch etc etc cannot do really. It is just the perceived doing it in VR & AR is what ppl think is different. The result is the same.

    i updated from OG Vive and i couldnt be happier. a wireless headset with no base stations, good controllers, that fits in half a shoe box with reasonably high resolution, fov, refresh rate, mixed reality, quest exclusives like espire 2 and assassins creed nexus, for only 500 dollars. you could spend 1000+ on something else but you would miss out on quest exclusives and wireless is amazing and the value you are getting with the quest 3 is unbeatable. once you try wireless vr theres no going back to walking around with 5 pounds of cable attached to your head that gets in knots and makes you trip.
    you also gotta understand a high end set like 1300 dollar crystal needs a very expensive pc to run it like the 2000 dollar rtx 4090. so its not even just 500 vs 1300, its 500 vs like 3000 dollars.

  • @RobertBartlett3

    Having never had any sort of VR headset before, I was really convinced to buy one with the new immersion that the mixed mode experience provides. And that, while probably not as amazing as I thought it might be for exactly the reasons you cite in your review, it is pretty neat to see your environment being the source of games and other items.
    I bought the elite strap, and the official charging dock. And at the moment, I get probably 2-3 hrs of use. The Elite strap really was a nice upgrade to the included strap, but before I buy any additional accessories I just wanted to test out the official ones first. I only just got the charging dock, so I guess time will tell on how that impacts the availability of the headset for me.
    As of now, I agree with everything you said about the headset. But never having had one, I can only tell you my personal opinions about this one. Hand tracking is neat, and the games are cool... but there is a lot to get used to in playing VR games, even if you have an environment that allows you to move around. The Meta Quest 3 includes a mechanism to keep you inside the bounds of your environment safely, so you dont run into walls or other stuff. That is nice. It can probably support higher resolution items (videos on youtube for example) than your own PC may support. You don't need a PC to use the headset. bit of you have one, it can be an additional source of VR goodness IF your PC has the horses to push it.
    if you want to do PCVR, you will need a supported configuration to pair your headset with your PC for PCVR. For consideration, I have a PC with an Intel 13900K processor, an NVIDIA 4080 16GB GPU and 64GB RAM. You do NOT need such a beefy machine, but you will need a machine with a powerful video card.
    PCVR is really cool. I have the STEAM VR LINK setup and with the appropriate cable OR WIFI connection (assuming you have a speedy Wifi network to support the connection) you can do some really cool stuff with your PC and the MQ3.
    As a noob within the VR world, I have a lot more to do, learn, and experience. But, I do feel like the MQ3 is a headset that I would recommend to anyone who wants to get into it for the first time. The learning curve is relatively low, but there is a lot to explore and experience.
    I purchased the 512GB version because I never EVER want to have to uninstall a program simply to install another one. Its only $150 more for 4x the amount of storage, and I feel like, at least for now, it's worth it.
    I highly recommend the MQ3.

These headsets are an insane upgrade. If you have a quest 2 don't walk hurry and run to buy the quest 3, sell your quest 2 to make some profit back and enjoy them! What Valve is cooking up next is probably another Steam Deck, not another Valve Index. The Steam Deck has massively outsold the Index and Steam has more or less conceded defeat to Meta by making a native Steam VR app for Quest.

      @soulechelon2643 4 месяца назад

      @@acurisur That was alot of speculation when I was specifically talking about their next VR product, not "every product they'll potentially make". As I stated, Quest 2 is fine for me at the moment and I have no desire to upgrade. Unless this thing breaks down, I can wait years for the next Valve VR headset if I wish. I'm pure PCVR. I don't play Quest games, so I want to upgrade into a pure PCVR headset. Valve's Deckard's rumors sound up my alley, so I'm waiting for more news on that.

    • @acurisur
      @acurisur 4 месяца назад

      @@soulechelon2643 Not really speculation, Valve didn't show anything at CES 2024 and just about all of their VR competitors did. And the numbers don't lie, Steam Deck massively outsold the Index so I don't see how sales numbers are speculation either.
      Valve have a history of abandoning things that aren't making them money, they did it with the Steam Link as well. if you want a PCVR headset there's much better headsets available right now than the Index, the Pixma Crystal blows it away in every single department.
      So you'd rather wait on something that's just a rumour instead? You don't sound like you genuinely want a better VR headset to me at all, because even the lowly Pico 4 is a better VR headset than the Valve Index. Better lenses, higher resolution, lower price. And both the Pico 4 and the Quest 3 can be used as PCVR headsets, in fact the 128GB Quest 3 was aimed specifically at PCVR users who don't need to store much on the internal storage.

    Interesting review. I bought last year a used quest 2, my first vr set. A massive step up from the rift my brother has....but I quickly found the flaws from the dodgy strap to finding the sweetspot. I have been looking at the q3, the thing is I only ever use it tethered to the PC for flight Sims. DCS maxed out with dx12 is as good as its going to get at 90mhz. Msfs, I have to revert to 72mhz with medium settings. I run a 4070 which is no slouch, but can easily max out the gpu. So in my mind it doesn't really matter if I go q3, the quality will be limited by the gpu. On the other hand I already have a quest 2 and VR PC and I’d have to buy new prescription lenses to put in it and likely new controller covers. I havent bought any VR headset since the first oculus rift CV1, I realized back then I need higher resolutions. I think the Quest 4 might be the sweet spot for jumping on board. I'm not totally convinced that OLED is the way to go though, as OLED panels with pancake lenses probably aren't a good fit. We're likely to see more LED/QLEDs, with the promise of micro-LED displays in a few years.

      Quest Pro is one of the only headsets in recent years that I haven't tried. I was all set to buy one but something made me hold off and then the early reviews discouraged me from getting one. I think if you could see your Quest Pro for a similar price to getting a new Quest 3, then it would definitely be a reasonably good upgrade. Ihaven't noticed any discernable stuttering when using Quest 3. Likely due to the XR2 Gen 2 processor in Quest 3 versus the older processor in Quest Pro.

    Thank's for your review, many bright/high contrast lights reflections with the cams and the lens, seem its not on all,others users don't have much of those reflections and others do have them,i guess it,s a defect with the production of those pancake quest 3 lens, quest 2 have less reflections but a smaller field for better view.
    Choice of games and softwares is limited,you can play many Android app and games with some learning.
    MetaQuest from my point of view are still prototype, put in sale with bad head strap,no so good lens,facial at high price and little space for install ,128g in 2024 is kinda small and 200$ more for 500 gigs is expensive here in Canada , meta at least should give 1tb with this price range.
    No easy play with others in your home,just some games can play 2 at home,this is not a playstion or Nintendo switch or Xbox,older people may not be able to play with this,

But here's my concern: You need an awful lot of space to play this game (Pickleball One). I'd have to clear my living room of all of its furniture! I totally agree. I recently did a video about the best VR sports games. I wanted to include Pickleball, but the space constraints convinced me not to. VR will always work much better for sports where your real movement is limited. I really like the physics and controls of Pickleball One but the inability to have 1-1 movement is a major drawback. Some VR tennis games have automatic movement, which gets round this issue to a degree, but ultimately it falls short. I think it will be similar for Pickleball unfortunately.

And I have the easiest setting! It's an ok game. Nothing the like Half Life Alyx (it was compared to that) nor a Skyrim VR. @VRLowdown  4 месяца назад +2

      The default battery life really is a big weakness. Both the KIWI Design and BOBO VR battery straps are excellent options. They are the only two I would really recommend. The BOBOVR M3 has a different design, so a lot of it comes down to what type of head strap you prefer. The M3 batteries only give about 1.5 hours of additional battery life, but you can buy additional batteries and hotswap them. I haven't personally tried the BOBOVR strap so I can't speak from personal experience, but I hear lots of positive comments from others. The KIWI Design battery strap gives about 3 hours extra battery life. I've got the SPC (single-point charging) version that lets me use their charging dock, but KIWI Design also have a regular battery strap that is pretty much the same, but just has a regular USB-C cable.

Purchased the official M2 to M3 conversion and fitted it when I got the Quest 3, which was easy enough to do but its really a one way swap since the plastics are a bit too brittle to disassemble without damaging them. So far the estimate of an additional 1.5 hours looks to be accurate enough, and the Bobo battery is keeping the headset at 100% for me without any buzzing noise that others have complained of. The headstrap itself is very comfortable and there is no pressure on the front of my face while wearing it as the clamping force is applied to my forehead and back of the head.

      I'm not sure that it would be a very compelling upgrade, as the HTC Vive Pro is still pretty good. The biggest difference would be the increase in clarity in view of the better lenses and increased resolution. This would undoubtedly feel like a big step up, but you'd be losing the AMOLED screens, which would be a shame. It depends where your priorities lie. Being able to go wireless is a huge plus for me, but you'd lose the external tracking which will be more accurate than the inside-out tracking of Quest 3. Overall, if I could see the Vive Pro for about the cost of a Quest 3, I'd personally do it every time, but equally, holding onto your Vive Pro till the next gen of headsets in the next 1-2 years would be a very reasonable decision.

      I think Quest 4 is likely to be a long way out, likely 2026, as it looks likely that 2025 will bring the Quest Pro 2, and Quest 4 is likely to follow the next year. I have no inside info on this, but it's what I think is most likely. It's tough to tell you what the best VR headset is apart from Quest 3 without knowing your priorities. I just made a video covering the best options though. You can watch it here: ruclips.net/video/IUsDvD_FMFc/видео.html

    If anyone owns it and has owned a valve index aaand have played beat saber - does the handtracking work better? I found quest 2 was terrible for beat saber as it lost remote location if your hands went to your side/slightly behind. Valve index was waaayyy better in that regard

    • @VRLowdown
      @VRLowdown  3 месяца назад

      Having played a fair bit of Beat Saber on Quest 2 and Quest 3, I don't think there's that much difference in the tracking quality. The tracking on Valve Index is always going to be better. However, unlike your experience, I haven't had any issues with Quest controller tracking that have impacted my experience. One point to note is that you'll get a significantly better experience playing Beat Saber on Quest 2 and Quest 3 as a standalone game, rather than playing via PCVR, due to the small amount of latency introduced with connecting Quest to PC.

    Wonderful headset. I just wish it had OLED-black levels, Quantum dot color, eye tracking & Foveated Rendering for better game performance and better environmental clarity when using the mixed reality feature. But all of the above would dramatically increase the sticker price, primarily the Micro-oled display. Micro-OLED + Pancake won't be doable for budget consumer headsets like this until probably 2030. :P

      OLED Mura, combined with the VR2's fresnel lenses teeny tiny sweet spot, awful god rays and noticeable glare make it feel like a messy, distracting and finicky VR experience compared to Quest 3.
      Also, PSVR2 trades motion clarity for more brightness with each click forward on the VR brightness slider. In order to get smooth motion that can compete against Q3 you have to drop the VR2's brightness slider down 0, but then you're left with a dim bleak image. Q3 is noticeably brighter while maintaining Near perfect CRT motion.
      With VR2, you can't have it both ways. Sony prioritized HDR, but in return you just get bad motion clarity for a super bright image depending on high you go.

    The biggest problem with the Quest 3 vs the Quest 2 for comfort and fit, is the Quest 3 fixing point is above center, so any head strap will naturally pull the top down, giving the user forehead fatigue, as I've experienced. The Quest 2 fits more centrally and the hold is therefore more evenly distributed on the face. I do like the Quest 3 more than the Quest 2, but I don't care much for the comfort level. I also dislike the controller batteries drain even when not in use on the Quest 3 - clearly a ploy to sell the Meta dock charger with rechargeable batteries.

      Good point re: the difference between the Quest 2 and Quest 3. However, I do think there are significant differences from individual to individual due to face shape. I recommended in the video that most people should opt for the 128gb version, but many people have highlighted the counter-argument. If money is tight, then the 128gb version is a good way to save money, as long as you don't mind making space on your device. 512gb will give you plenty of space so you can pretty much install everything you want.

But sadly we have to wait till 2025 best case scenario if not 2026. Of course I have no idea if they go the eye tracking route but I’m guessing everyone will because that’s how you can handle the extreme pixels easier and it’s how our eyes work anyways. But yea sadly people are left with the Quest 3 which I’m sure is fun, just not ideal pass through yet. Or the Apple Vision Pro which is super expensive and doesn’t have the games yet. That was smart by Apple. Go into a market that can’t really get off the ground and give people close to an ideal experience to start. Now we know what is possible. The good news is, I think it’s going to show VR will be important as we go forward. For better or worse as a society. But maybe people will go against these products.
