  • In this video, I will show you what healthy PF tek BRF jars, and bacteria infected jar should look like. They may be covered with mycelium and smells like fresh mushroom, but they can still be contaminated with bacteria.

Are you aware that metabolites and moisture are natural within the jars? I think your assessment of what contamination is is flawed. I did not hear you mention anything in regard to TEMPERATURE, possibility that some areas of the substrate could be compacted tightly and inhibiting or slowing growth, inequality of the LC injection at different points, etc, etc, etc. ALL of those jars looked perfectly acceptable. No trich, no black mold, no other contaminants

The first jar just has more rhizomorphic growth. The other side of the jar and 2nd jar appear to have more tomentose (fluffy) growth and no contamination I can see.

Question on alcohol as a disinfectant/sanitizer: Does the introduction of a bit of alcohol at the inoculation point impact anything in a significant way? If not, it seems we could use a cotton ball soaked in alcohol on top of the port as an additional simple sanitary layer that the needle passes through. Thanks!

There is two different types of mycelium growth. Let it colonize and smell it. It should smell earthy like a mushroom. Usually if your jars are filled with super nutrient rich food, the mycelium is fluffier and less aggressive because there is plenty of nutrients.

Its obvious when it happens especially for me when I had had something like 50-60 jars all the way to fruit without any problems until six or seven jars all from one inoculation had contaminates. Pissed me off. When you spend as much time as I do to make SURE that doesn't happen and then its introduced with the spores themselves from the vendor....vendor is not around any longer and went out due to LOTS of contaminated spore syringes.

The biggest problem is not being able to tell the difference between white mold and white mycelium. White mold likes to hang out in the same places and doesn't mind indirect sunlight. Tends to be fuzzy compared to spider web mycelium, but then again mycelium can look fuzzy too. So it's frustrating, not knowing what to try to kill off, and what to leave alone. Good to note that you can still harvest with a little bit of contamination, at least on the second flush, I was able to harvest 5.5 grams. Better than nothing.

Someone feel free to correct me if I'm getting this wrong, but... My understanding is that spore syringes have to be assumed contaminated because the mushroom the spores originate from was most likely not grown in a sterile environment and there's no clean up involved in their production. That isn't to say that they are contaminated, just that they should be handled under that assumption because there is a risk that they are. In contrast, liquid culture from a reliable supplier can be assumed to be uncontaminated (if handled properly) because it contains mycelium that was initially grown out on agar, allowing the opportunity to isolate a culture free of contamination.

Also, you want to make sure that when you put the alcohol on your syringe port, that it dries completely before you inoculate, because the alcohol will not kill the bacteria, if the alcohol remains wet and then gets pushed inside where all that moisture is, it will never kill the bacteria

I will fruit everyone of them, since it's just bacterial, no need to put it in a separate chamber. However, since it's bacterial, it could end up with mold more easily, so I would pay closer attention to the whole tub, and take infected cake out as soon as I see any mold growing on it.

It sounds like you are trying to figure out why the bacteria in the last one is so bad, and there could be bacteria along with the spores in that spore syringe because they are inherently not sterile, so that may be why you’re seeing a little bit of bacteria here and there.

@Gideon Pioneer I will answer your questions and I HOPE you answer mine! No, I remember why now I even did freeze them: When my spores arrived I had asked about the potency of them from the company, since they had arrived in my country from another continent and it took about 5 weeks to arrive..they wrote that the packaging was good and I might put them in the refrigerator until usage. Later when I realized I had more than I needed a large crop for my own use,and potency does go down of the mushrooms, I figured to freeze them until next use...and I did NONE of the above that you mentioned. I unfroze them and saw "mush" and no amount of mushroom and I ate a lot effected me and it tasted horrible. I would check about the variables you said on this great forum: but before i list it: I happen to talk to people named "Gidon" since the name "Gideon" is pronounced in its originally Hebrew "Gee-Dohn" and its meaning etc. My army brigade infantry was 4 smaller groups and our name was "The Boakim: and another unit was called "Gideon". Boakim kind of means "Smashing In" which we did in 1973 when Syria attacked us in Israel but 12 of my 27man unit died, I served combat from 1971-1990, and still cannot figure why humans need to attack humans. www.shroomery.org/forums/dosearch.php?terms=pf+tek May the Infinite One Bless You

@@positivevibesveda Yup its called a liquid inoculate instead of culture and actually typically outperform liquid cultures. That's why people use condiment cups for agar then suck up a syringe of sterile water poke a hole through the top of the cup and blast the mycelium away until you get it all broken apart from the top of the agar and then suck as much of it as you can in the syringe and boom ready for some great inoculations. Works great for a larger grain bags especially over cutting and dumping cups of agar unless you have multiple cups of the same "strain" to dump into a larger amount of grains. The only time I wouldn't recommend it is if your grains are a little bit too much on the wet side.
