Say0n Lavigne well that gina is saying it like latina is a race, which it’s not. Gina is american, not puertorrican. She has descent but is not her nationality. She is saying that her parents didn’t raised her in the culture (whici either way is not the same as being in puerto rico)

+Lyric Poet and i wish pple would remember that not every latin american country even uses spanish, like brazil, and even haiti. Haiti is also in latin america; it's right next to the DR, but no one really even recognizes that it's a latin american country too. haitians are afro-latino too.

Abigail dawkins what I'm saying is that latinos speak other languages besides spanish, like brazil. just because haiti is not a spanish speaking country doesn't mean haitians are not latino, it means they are not hispanic, again just like brazilians.

      @nadiap.a.8949 9 лет назад +1

+misshv Her response was good for the people who feel attacked when others say they AREN'T latin@ enough, BUT I believe the debate about Latinidad and what makes a "Latino/a" vs. a
person from Latin America is much more nuanced than what is portrayed
here. I don't think her argument encompasses the wide argument that
could be made for the opposite view or for a similar yet slightly
      different argument.
Just how she says there are "different types of latin@s" and there is a "great range," people must take into account the differences between AMERICAN Latin@s and people who are IN/were born in/spent much of their time in Latin America, because those experiences are going to be much different than her own. Just like she said, there are so many different types and going to the "we are all human" argument is a bit of a cop out for a very difficult issue.
Btw I know what you're going to say: YES we ARE all human and in a perfect world these differences SHOULDN'T MATTER. AND YOU'RE RIGHT. BUT the reality is we live in a world where labels DO happen and it is imperative to remember the context of the world we live in when we make these types of arguments.

    • @shirmeldanielle2161

+Nadia P.A. I completely understand where you are coming from with your statements. I am Caribbean more specifically Afro-Caribbean and lived in the Caribbean for the first 18 years of my life and the I went away to uni in Canada. One of the things that my other "home-grown" Caribbean friends used to talk about, was the people who were like third generation Canadian who had never visited the islands but went around telling people they were Caribbean. We felt that how can you say that, you have no idea what Caribbean life is really about and you hold a lot of the stereotypes and pre-conceived ideas of a typical Canadian with what life is like in the Caribbean.
Then in one of the African Caribbean society meetings, the Africans basically said the same things to us, that we shouldn't be called African, we have no idea what life in Africa is like etc. Now I have never referred to myself as African and I hate when I have to use Afro Caribbean or worse still African-American ... because I don't identify with any of those cultures ... but I thought about those that do associate with their African ancestry. And I realised something.
Yes growing up on a Caribbean island, life would be more similar to that of a person growing up in another Caribbean island in a lot of ways, but each Caribbean island has its own unique identity as well. And having lots of friends from just about every island I can say very confidently that the range in experiences can be quite varied depending on size of island, diversity of island, and position of the island. Now if that is so of a small group of bits of rock with a combined population less than most if not all Latina countries, and certainly less than almost all African countries, or Asian countries or European countries .. etc, trying to define what each of these represents is a challenge. Without even then trying to consider what it means to be a person that is a descendant of people from these places but live somewhere else.
Do we cut off at the second generation ... once you didn't grow up in the area... And what of those that spent part of their growing up years in their country and then migrated for the other part.. etc etc.
My point for this very long winded response (and I do apologise fro the length) is that the we are human argument is an important one to try and breakdown the social constructs that we have put up in order to try and define a person sight unseen or from first glance. When in reality the few things that you can tell from that information are hardly ever the things that people are trying to judge about you. Even in my tiny island my definition of what it means to be Caribbean, could be vastly different than my neighbour because we are different and while certain conditions are true our experiences can be very varied and our interpretations or those experiences even greater in variation.
One last thing, the argument of not Latina enough may have been made under the argument of Hollywood choosing her for the role because she is "more white" aka doesn't have the accent etc and thereby feeding into the lack of diversity in the entertainment industry and how they only use "more Latina" women when they want to perpetuate a certain Latina trope and because Jane is the lead with a lot more depth and dimension, they chose an actress that was a little less obviously Latina. Now that would be an interesting argument that might have credence, but that should be expressed differently that just saying she's not Latina enough because of my first four paragraphs.

It's not fair because if we don't speak English, we're not American enough or American at all/ or made fun of, for example, telling us to go back to Mexico. And if we don't speak Spanish, were not Mexican enough. It's like Latinos are stuck in between. I'm a proud Mexican but don't speak Spanish but that's because I was raised here and was taught that in school. Just stop saying we're not Mexican "enough." My family speaks Spanish so I can pick up a few things but I can't speak the language fluently nor can I understand it fluently especially spoken by a person with a native tongue. My whole life I was told I'm not a 'real latina', even once by a good friend of mine! But after seeing this video, I know now that there's nothing anyone can say to me that's going to change where I come from and where my ancestors were raised. I always thought you had to be of a dark complexion and be able to speak Spanish fluently to be considered 'latina' but even women who filled those requirements (such as Gina) get put down as well. This needs to change.

I agree 100% with your comments. As well as Gina's. But it took me years to get there. I am Afro-American, with Puerto Rican and Mexican friends and family. They full well made me learn Spanish. Then I was like them. When i met a Latino that didn't Speak Spanish i would be just as snobby as them.
Ridiculous right? Considering I'm not even Latino. But it took blacks being judgmental over my some what dominant Latin life style that made me understand that the whole thing is ridiculous. I didn't feel less black because I eat menudo and speak Spanish.

+Christopher Aparicio Well Latino is an imposed label that is actually a generic pan-ethnic term.
Example when the Real Latins the Romans conquered Spain they named it or labeled it Hispania and fro this you get Hispano or Hispanic in English. This was a imposed label and the Spanish now call themselves Iberian.
Puerto rican and Caribbean are not imposed labels like Hispanic and Latino are which are used for White supremacy and oppression. Taking the label of your master or being labeled as your master makes people mental slaves. They would rather identify with their rapist and slave master and oppressor is shameful.

As a Filipino, I have many cousins in the US (I'm curently in Canada- not that it matters) were also raised the same way as Gina. They were taught English for the same reasons... in fear of getting bullied or they thought it will be harder for them to learn English, etc. Thank God my parents didnt have the same mentality because you guys are right, being multilingual has benefits! However, one of her arguments that covers everything is when she said "I'm going to be reprimanded by a culture because of the way I was raised?" She has a valid point. She was raised that way due to misconceptions. She loves her culture and that's all that matters really.

On top of that, my Black parents and Black grandmother taught me to speak properly so the "acting white" thing was confusing because as far as I knew, I acted like them.

Vanessa Walker That's kinda sad, sadder still that older generation were made to feel that way.
how many other races have been in a foreign place have tried to change themselves to, fit in. And not only that, but don't want their children to have to go through the same pain. That's how some languages have been lost, due to fear conditioning and bullying. I like everything she said. We wear our skin color, our heritage, like clothes or armor. It's really sad, we should love first. Hate never.

I agree with what she is saying but that's not the case always you don't necessarily have to have English as your first language for you to speak it correctly my parents were born in Mexico and their first language is Spanish so anytime they speak English they speak it with an accent. When I was growing up they only spoke Spanish to me, Spanish is my first language and I thank them that they only spoke to me in Spanish because I am bilingual. I learned English when I was four years old and I went to preschool, my teacher didn't speak Spanish and I didn't speak English but I learned to speak it fluently, I don't speak English with an accent most people don't believe that Spanish is my first language because I speak English so well and when I have kids I am definitely not going to speak English to them I am only teaching them Spanish and they can learn English when they go to school like I did.

Thing is people are a lot more open minded now, it's getting easier, but for older generations Latinos faced a lot of discrimination for being Hispanic or speaking Spanish, it was tough! So the idea of an "accent less" English was a defense mechanism, you can't blame previous generations of Latinos. Now we know better as far bilingualism and people are a lot more accepting AND we've become stronger as a group, but that's taken several generations, we have to respect the Latinos that have been here during the times when there were signs posted that said "no dogs no Mexicans" and when you'd get punished in school for speaking Spanish, there's a history behind people who thought like Gina's parents, it's easy to judge in 2017, but many of us have negative experiences where you can UNDERSTAND why Latinos felt they had to make certain decisions and be glad that things have changed for the better

Her parents gave into the pressures, the fear to be made fun of because of accents, and ended up losing the language. That is very sad. I am not a hurt person and hope not to hurt anyone else. If anything know that whatever language your family speaks, cherish it, learn it, and be the change you want to be in the world.. as in, don't judge others based on appearances and even prove people wrong. It happens to me all the time, where because I "don't' even have an accent", people doubt I DO speak Spanish and fluently. Then I'm like "yeah bitches", well at least that's what I think. Idk it just makes me SO proud. I am able to communicate with my people and represent the beauty of being bilingual and my roots. To those who lost their native language, there's always room to learn.

    • @wndrwmn72a44
      @wndrwmn72a44 7 лет назад +4

It's more than the fear of being made fun of...If you weren't around in the 50's-60's during the Chicano riots you probably wouldn't understand. If you were even bilingual, you would be denied a proper and full education. Teachers would literally tell you, your going to end up a mechanic or seamstress. So no use wasting our time educating you. Parents feared their children wouldn't be able to live the American dream! I'm 5th generation American with Mexican decent and proud of my culture! I have Mexican friends who always bragging about being Mexican but never cook or take care of their families. So, to be judged on what language you speak is pure ignorance!

Because nobody say to white latinos u are a "european-latino". Do you know what I mean?If we begin to use the term afro-latino than we have to use european-latino, asia-latino, arab- latino etc. ....

Doesn't have to be her first or best language - but if she is so proud, why wouldn't she want to? My parents are both second generation so even know they know Spanish they are used to speaking English more so that's their go to language. Their problem is that they don't know how language works. They said they started trying to teach me at the age of 5 and I didn't want to learn. You have to establish it way earlier than that also I'm hearing English 99% of the time. Therefore in order for me to learn they'd have to almost exclusively speak in Spanish at home, like most billingual kids are raised. They tried to pin the blame on me but I didn't raise myself. Anyway all the Spanish I know is self-taught or from taking 6 semesters of Spanish in college. I hope to improve it more and one day live, even if it's just temporarily in a Spanish speaking country. I want to learn so I can teach my kids, I have a friend who is actually living that life currently in Ecuador. I'm hoping to get a teaching job in Peru, I've already contacted some people. We'll see what happens but I'm really going to pursue Spanish as long as I live.

OK I completely agree, not speaking Spanish doesn't define u as a latino/a but I feel that as a parent we want the best for our children right? and they have this miss conception that people may judge u because u have accent and I understand at some point but in present time being bilingual open a lot of doors, I'm Mexican born and raised but my parents knew that speaking English it's crucial to get better job opportunities in the future so the took me to a English-speaking school since I can remember. If u are a third generation Latino and not even your parents know the language then I fully agree but if they know it and they would only speak English because they feel they are going to be discriminated I find it a bit ignorant and selfish.

+Christopher Nogueira I'm 28 and I still don't see your point. The only difference is that I was raised in Mexico but I always came to see my parents since they have always lived in the states. Sooo...oh BTW I'm not criticizing, I'm just giving my point of view which is way different.

if you are going to be proud to be Latin you need to know your history. I understand that some parents don't want to teach their kids Spanish because they are parents and have reasons to protect their children. but after a certain age you need to educate yourself. not saying you should be fluent in Spanish but learn the basics. Language is a giant part of a culture, not just food or clothing. I think you can find a translation for anything now in days, but even with translations many things are changed and meaning can be altered

Uggghhhhh this is so true it gave me goose bumps. I came to the US from Colombia when I was 5, I am now 22. When i was a kid, probably elementary until early high school, I hated speaking Spanish. I would try to not speak it or even pretend i didn't Know how to. I live in a predominantly Latino community in Miami, FL but regardless of it being predominantly Latino in grade school it was still kinda looked down upon to speak fluent Spanish. It sounds really weird, cause you'd think you'd be proud, bu no you're not. I had a friend, her mom was Cuban her dad was British, she new how to speak Spanish very well... but i promise you till our junior year of high school she pretended she didn't know how to speak it. As I got older more into my high school years i became prouder of my Spanish heritage. I started to listen to Spanish music more, I started to go out to Spanish clubs, and I also started speaking my language more.

The problem is that she goes around called herself a "Latina" as if it's some sort of race. It's not! The only thing that makes a person a "Latino" is speaking a Romance Language. She's not a Latin, she's just an American (estadounidense), which is fine. There's noting wrong with being from the USA. Identity politics isn't a think in most Spanish speaking countries. We don't care what your background is, what unites us is language.

My parents spoke to me in Spanish, and I don't have an accent. I believe that argument is invalid...she strays away from the point she is making on wether speaking Spanish makes her less of a "latina". I think she made great and positive points, but she didn't answer the question which obviously hit a nerve. My boyfriend who's mother is Portuguese has taught me many beautiful things about that part of his background, however he doesn't speak the language. Language is a part of culture, but I don't think it's fair to say that it defines it. There is always the opportunity to learn the language and be able to engage more deeply with people who only speak spanish or when travelling to a Spanish-speaking country.

My Grandma is Native Mexican (Purepecha) and nobody is gonna sit and tell me I'm not Mexican or Latina enough. I speak some Spanish but not fluently, if I'm going to take classes for another language best believe it's going to be my grandma's tongue.

I have light brown hair and blue eyes and I don’t speak Spanish fluently because my parents didn’t teach me (but I’m learning it) I have always been told that I don’t look latina, I’m not latina enough etc. I don’t know why people think they have a right to tell me if I’m latina or not. I’m a latina and proud of it!
