This little “slow” Miata is as quick to 60 as a 1993 z28 Camaro, or the 2003 Mustang GT. Those were plenty fast in their day. That’s more than enough power for most people. We are spoiled these days with 500 horse power cars from the factory, but you’d lose your license using it on the streets, as the speed limits haven’t adjusted for the increase in power. For those who remember fast is relative but fun is fun.
I've owned a polymental grey 2021' MX-5 Miata Club w. Brembo/BBS/ Recaro package since late May. The car is an absolute blast to drive and never have I felt it needs more power. Car and Driver has tested the car running 0-60 in 5.7 seconds and 1/4m in 14.4@95.5mph which is roughly equal to the S2000 which is plenty quick IMO. The power to weight ratio is about as close to perfect as you're gonna get in a car that is fun to drive anywhere on public roads.
I'd be really interested to see them build one of these. Do all the usual stuff, but a supercharger. Oh man. Just bumping the power up to about 250hp, and more torque, would be a fun little car!
Sergio Aguirre do something different? Like, do people not like to be? I'd do a supercharger on one of these. Yes, it's not as good as a K swap, but it's different.
I ordered a 2022 Club with the BBR (same basic spec as your tester) and I'm so glad I came upon this video! I'm a mere few weeks away now from delivery and my excitement is through the roof. I'm coming from a 2002 VW Cabrio and Mk7 GLI so this will be a significant step up in the fun category.
One thing I’ve noticed with your videos is that you need to adjust your driving position. Your arms are always way too far away from the wheel and you’d have better control if you were closer.
My understanding is that all the extra power is at the very top of the higher rev range, meaning that for most situations the added power doesn't translate into much. Still nice to have that extra HP at the top though.
Sometimes I hit the REV limiter on my 2016 Club , it shuts down & it feels like I'm going to eat the dashboard. The extra RPMs would add more to the car for those ( like me ) seeking to get every last pony out of the motor. Adjustable telescoping steering wheel now on the 2019s too ! Don't think he mentioned that.
When I got my 2016, one thing I said that would've made the car a whole lot better was 500-1000 extra revs. Not necessarily power- just the shift points and ability to work the range.
Always had American muscle including a 2015 gt mustang . Bought a 2000 Nb to drive to work and the mustang never got driven . Then got a a 2010 nc phrt and loved that car . Now have a 2019 gt rf with gts package . The only other car I would want is a lotus Elise .
The ones who complain are not track or canyon drivers. They are the red light to red light mashers. Brake! Gas! Wait, red light ah shit haha. Smooth flow, going through the gears, it’s a beautiful thing. One day kiddos
the miata is starting to approach the power nums of the s2000 stock. i really think for a long time the miata was lacking power stock and it's tricky to squeeze more power out of the car in an oem+ manner where it's reliable and maintains the same power curve. i think this will be a very good platform when they start selling used
So this made the same time under slick conditions? Not bad! Tires, coilovers, and a supercharger would be sweet on that MX5. But my real question is, can a 6'1" 290lbs linebacker drive it? The older models were a no go for the big man. Great video guys! ✌😎
At 6'1", your fit will depend on how your height is divided between torso and leg, so you should probably just sit in one to try. The refreshed 2019 has a steering wheel reach adjustment, so those with longer legs may be able to find a better position. But at 290 lb you should avoid the Recaro seats.
@@vossler360 yeah, racing buckets can be a bit tight in the hips, but at least in my case most of my height and weight are evenly distributed, except my legs are often too long and broad for these cockpits. The wheel adjustment may help, but it's true that a test drive is really the only way to know for sure.
Wow that car looks so much fun just kicking the back end out. Does anyone know if there are usually good tunes for this car? I would like to know if its easy to get 220hp with tune and full bolt ons.
I just bought a 2020 RF club - has anyone tracked their Miata RF yet and can you tell me if tracks are ok with open lapping without an aftermarket roll cage?
You know, that would be kind of interesting. For 2019 they get a 1LE package. I'd probably NEVER buy one my self but I can't help being curious how it compairs to other cars.
I currently have a 2017 with the HD brake and cooling package...it is very confident and predictable even on it's stock runflats; I've yet to find it's limits (haven't had it on a road course yet)... Couldn't make it to the track day this year, but next year I'll be there even if I get suddenly 'sick' 😅
@@MozzaBurger88 I didn't say I don't like it, I just was really surprised to see a modern car roll like that. Seems funny but the passanger will get dizzy haha
Sorry, but just not interested in “how much quicker” any Miata is. I’ve owned three, to date, loved ‘em all, and I know many enjoy tracking them. But to me, speed is simply not what the MX-5 is about. Goes against the very essence of the Miata concept of how fun it is to drive a slow car fast. The Miata is, arguably, the most “fun” car to drive at any price. And honestly, speed’s got nothin’ to do with that. Kinda like evaluating a Camaro on “how luxurious” it is or a 911 on how much stuff it can carry. That said, glad you’re enjoying it.
I want miata to have 200 hp and be 1000kg max. you would not feel lack of power. yeap it would not fly, but it would be very very fun and also quite fast car
My old 1980's developed engine = B18CR running 180 whp in a 96 ITR chassis with basic mods and tune @ 960kgs munches turbo miata's every track event i go too.. i have literately only ever had 2x miata's beat me, 1 was a heavily modded turbo and the other was a N/A K-Swap.. lol..
Actually, the 2019 MX-5 isn't far from the 1000 kg 200 bhp mark. I'm sure if you were to do some basic weight reduction and install a few power bolt-on modifications that you could realize that desired weight and power.
Slower but better looking and probably only a little bit less fun to drive. It also doesn't have the exotic factor of an S2K and costs more money. But its a new car so it will be more reliable than an s2000.
A 2006 Acura RSX-S had an MSRP of $23500, which adjusts to $30k in today's dollars, which is more expensive than the $26k for the base 2019 MX-5. And while the RSX-S made more peak power (200 bhp @ 7400 rpm vs 181 bhp @ 7000 rpm), it had less torque and less mid-range (142 lb-ft @ 6000 rpm vs 151 lb-lb @ 4000 rpm), and weighed approximately 500 lb over MX-5 (2808 lb vs 2345 lb). This probably explains why the new MX-5 is quicker than RSX-s in both 0-60 mph (5.7 s vs. 6.1 s) and quarter mile (14.5 @ 95 mph vs. 14.8 @ 95 mph). The MX-5 also pulls more g's on the skidpad, has better braking, and has better fuel efficiency. Then there's the whole FWD vs. RWD. So which one is the better sports car? I'll let you figure that out on your own.
Eric Shea i never mentioned the chassis and weight, only the engine since the RSX was a FWD car. The Miata also is closer to a 30k car and easily goes over that price. The Honda engine can be tuned to have a lower vtec crossover point too.
You know what’s funny?... for all you s2000 fans bashing the 2019 mx5, you all would probably be riding the e-brake handle of the thing if it had about 200+hp huh?🤔😏 FACT IS the mx5 had, has and will continue to have more fans than the s2000 ever will, the mx5 is a pioneer in the game so SHOW SOME RESPECT!!! The engine in the 2019 has been substantially revised from the 2016-18, much to the point where bolt-ons on the older engine would not be an adequate substitute.
Would be cool, but would also defeat the purpose of a Miata. Its supposed to be nimble and quick. A turbo k series Miata is a weapon that would be overpowered for the chassis.....buuut an n/a k swap would be sweet, but this car has plenty of potential as is!
