Enjoy it, it's one awesome little car. When I get my driver's license, i'm gonna get a mazda mx5 NA. The old one, cuz im too broke to afford a new one and I love its pop up headlights.
Congrats on car and engagement. Also you are freaking gorgeous! Love my 3 series hardtop. It’s so awesome, like having 2 cars in 1 when you drop the top.
I love it, planning to own one in the near future. I have been always a fan of Mazda with their innovation, efficiency and reliable if you take care of them. They are daring to try new things and also make their cars a lot of fun and driver oriented but at the same time they pay attention to the passengers. The fact that they are an independent manufacturer which is quite unique these days and makes me like the brand even more.
@@AutoReviewOfficial Hi Patrick, I just purchased my own MX-5 RF GT Black Roof 6MT in Mica White. It's the first manual transmission car I've owned since 2002, but I'm enjoying it immensely. Cheers, Peter
When I see this engine and compare it with the 2.0 N/A engine of the Honda S2000 nearly 20 years ago, you will realize how much advanced that engine was with 250 HP! I couldn't understand why people turned down that magnificent driver's car with a fenomenal engine for cars (like BMW or Mercedes) only because it had a Honda badge on it.....
What? No one turned it down, it was one of the most popular cars of it's era and remains so to this day, with many placing it above the Miata on their "best affordable sports car" list (despite the Miata being the most popular sports car of all time)
In Europe it was a different story. The German brands were here more popular than the S2K. You can see it back in the salesnumbers. As a whole continent we had only 19000 units sold in 10 years! That's a fraction what the BMW Z4 and Mercedes-Benz SLK had in sales. Hence my conclusion: it was less popular than the German counterparts. The car was only sold to the hardcore Enthusiast who appreciated the engineering.
They were very costly to buy and people did not want to spend over 35 k for a honda. look up what other cars cost in 2009 or so. Im sure most of the folks who passed and bought a german or ? were sorry a few years later.
Hey Patrick! Nice review. How tall are you if you don't mind me asking? I'm trying to use your height as a reference for myself for how I might fit in the car.
This is the best review ive seen of the new mx5..... The height restriction was particularly interesting as im about the same height as yourself and remember some years ago having those same issues in my old mg midget. leg room in that though was not a problem but i could, if i wished, actually see over the top of the windscreen!.... is there any seat angle adjustment in the mx ?
The rag top sells much better for two reason . Number 1 the RF is not a drop head it's a Surrey. Number 2. Weight . Another 100lbs is significant add the other 100lbs the 2.0 adds and it then overrides all the lightening and balance Mazda did in the original ND design.
would you guys say the ND1 with a good tune and headers come close to the power of the stock ND2? And would 16" inch light weight wheels make this car even faster without too much sacrifice in handling?
Even if it does manage the same rough peak number, the delivery won't be the same. The ND1 engine has power drop off well before the redline. There's a reason Mazda messed with the engine for 2019 and didn't just slap on exhaust upgrades. I held out on the deep discount 2018's last summer and waited for a 2019. Coincidentally, I'm finally picking it up today!
@@alansmilealot it's a total riot. I can't recommend the ND2 enough, and I'm HIGHLY glad I waited. The telescoping wheel alone makes it so much easier to comfortably drive the vehicle. I bought a Sport for about $25,000 plus tax. I think it's the best deal currently on the sports car market.
@@thatoneotherotherguy another guy mentioned he bought the sport and paid thru the dealership to add the lsd for less than $1000. That really caught my interest, I think I will wait a few years. I really need to get my 1rst home

Youre thorough and knowledgeable but if you're going to stick to the format of reviews that doug demuro does, I think you should differentiate yourself in some way. doug has the doug score, the straightpipes have box test and mirror test...just something to think about. this is still a very well produced video
@@willtato8778 I've owned lots of cars, and I know for certain that I mostly enjoy good handling and driving dynamics. You were reviewing a small, fun roadster, not a diesel SUV. Tell us how it drives and then, maybe, talk 1 minute about cup holders.
Lane departure, back up camera, speed monitors all this nanny state tech (I know a lot is required by law) does not need to be their. It’s a car, it’s meant to get you from a to b and this being a sports car is supposed to make that journey fun. And who gives a shit about being able to connect to the internet in their car???
181hrsprs 151tq. So to date, the MX-5 still doesn't make as much power as a 25 year old Mazda KLZE V6 which Mazda should have put in the very first MX-5. That engine would have bumped it into Porsche, Lotus territory, may have even caused the last 2 RX cars to flop. Just add a turbo and no worries, it has no apex seals. There are a few swaps out there, not much video, still fun to watch and to hear.
Everything isn't about raw HP numbers. That leads to "slap a v8 in it" responses to everything. I bet that boat anchor of an ancient Mazda V6 weighs a great deal more than the old and new four cylinder. Light weight is the Miata's biggest engineering consideration. They weakened their own transmission and have revised it four times to strengthen it back up... all to lose 10-20 pounds.
It's an all aluminum v6 except for the forged crank and the cams, it weighs about the same as a BP fully dressed. It is still a Mazda engine from better days. In it's stock form 200/170, so it's not overkill. And that's NA with a trick intake that keeps it in the power. If Mazda had continued developing that engine with variable valve timing and DI it would be even better. All of the original character of a Miata would be retained, + more power, + better sound, no lag. But muh fuel economy, with a 6 speed it would have terrific fuel economy staying out of the power and cruising. It's the image of a 6 cyl., this idea that it will compromise this or that, not the reality of this engine, that kept them out of the MX-5/Miata.
An inexpensive remap and new exhaust takes it above 200hp, plenty... 181 hp is actually plenty anyways, got a proper in-line 4 top end screamer.. It means the maintenance costs and weight is kept down which is the essence of the car.. Inexpensive to swap a Duratec Ford V6 if you really have to, fits easy
It's already great. Significantly more power at this weight will lose the "won't lose your license or crash going flat out on public roads" aspect that has always been part of the MX-5.
Not really. Its already 10 seconds faster than a Hellcat on some tracks. If you want a more powerful car, I don't think the Miata is the car for you. Miata are not really about top speed, or blistering acceleration. More about low cost of entry, and great handling at modest speeds.
@@dreiak If a Miata wasn't faster than a Hellcat on a curvy road it would be a bad thing. Anything can be improved upon...even the horsepower otherwise Mazda would have kept the original displacement and horspower figures if that was enough or am i wrong? I mean if the 155hp was more than adequate why didn't they use the efficiency they gained to improve fuel economy instead of more peak power? Accept it or not....every manufacturer is in an arms race, if Mazda had more sales to offset high power vehicles the Miata would probably already have a 2.5T version....why else is a turbo or supercharger kit so popular?
@@Enforcer_WJDE the new 2l model has 184hp and I'm very tempted. OTOH, I might get an old NA in decent condition and restore it to better than new with a Jaguar 3l V6. That one is not that much heavier than the original engine and thus doesn't ruin the weight distribution.
@@VolkerHett Are you perhaps subscribed to a certain british youtube channel??? The V6 idea is great. I just had a look at a used ND RF but it's still over what i want to pay. The BBR turbo looks interesting as a powerup option.
