True. I have a Sport. It’s just as fast as a Club but without the bling. The Sport has the stuff I want: AC, keyless entry and start, tilt and telescope wheel, LED headlights, cruise control. This base model is not a stripper! And, the stock sound system is excellent, you don’t need the Bose. Apple Carplay is a $500 option but don’t bother- the wireless Bluetooth integration with your phone is more than adequate. And you don’t need lane departure warning or other nanny aids, either.
Went with a 2019 RF for my first vehicle purchase. Absolutely no regrets, it’s a beautiful creation. Best 4,000 miles I’ve put on any car by far. Got the windows tinted & added a RoadsterSport Race muffler, made an already awesome car even more badass.

This review had me laughing. Informative and entertaining at the same time. This car is all about the journey, not the destination. Therefore, trash the cup holders, and get a drink when you reach your destination. No drink = unsalted Planter's. Good logic, and advice. Unexpectedly removes the protective film from the telescopic steering wheel handle and proceeds to hide it near the center console. Smooth. Subbed!
One more time Mazda designs this beautiful Mx5 . I agree with Joe, if you want to have fun "manual " transmission will keep you engage with the car, and have nothing but fun ! same with the Top is so easy to pull out and put it back so easily , " who needs power " yes !!! well said Joe! . thanks for the excellent review.
Great review. Just sat in one last week back-to-back with the new Mazda 3. Found the Miata more comfortable. I was pleasantly surprised. I am 6’, by the way.
Fantastic video as usual man, but can we take a moment to appreciate how good Mazda's paint looks on their cars. Idk what it is, the paint always looks so top notch.
It is so cool he is showing us the base model, the Sport. As the 2019 model year ends, dealers are blowing this trim out the door at $28;400. The Sport model is true to the MX-5 creed: small size and lightness. And now it’s fast: 60 mph comes up in under 6 seconds. Most reviews focus on the bloated and expensive RF model, which is for the kind of customer who orders the automatic transmission.
No.. RF GT is for people like me that intend to make it their daily driver and live in a cool wet climate.. I would never buy it with auto it’s only like 100lb heavier.. good thing I’m not a fatty
Sold my Focus RS for an ND Miata Club (Brembo+Recaro+BBS) and with an exhaust, tune, and good set of coilovers this car is just so much fun. Already have a few autoX events with it and you just can't replicate lightweight. You can always make a car faster and have more grip, but losing 1000lbs on a car is nearly impossible or too expensive.
I ditched a 2017 mustang gt sport pac, for a 2018 ND GS with the sport pac. Its a blast, I'm not in jail anymore and i still get to drive like a dick!!
I want the 3 position door back. Set to the first stop I can't get into or out of the car. Set to the second and full open position we are constantly having to be concerned about chipping paint on the door edge because the door opens so wide it can hit cars in the next lane or in a two car garage.
The best sports car in the world because of it’s affordability and driving enjoyment! I fell in love with it years ago when I had a chance to drive the 2nd generation. I can only imagine how much fun the 2019 is. Sexy body design, the taillights are gorgeous!
Another great review Raiti! Couldn’t agree more about the cup holders. Have never used mine and wish they never came. Having drinks in these types of bumpy cars are a recipe for disaster when driving quickly and taking corners
I love the look of the car with the black wheels and that red. It looks like so much fun to drive! Always interesting to hear the history lesson behind car! Great job guys!
I like that they haven't stuffed a turbo under the hood like everyone else. Looks like a fun ride. You should have pulled into Costco and see exactly how many cases of water you could get in. Lol. What's the MSRP? Also, what were the warning beeps while you were driving? Lane keep or blind spot?
I just discover your RUclips channel, and I'm absolutely delighted with the time you take to explain what are the specifics of the exterior design of this Mazda MX5. It's fascinating how you talk about it, well done !!! (now I can resume watching further than 4/48 ;)) Your videos can compare, I think, with the quality of the french channel Petites Observations Automobiles, run by car enthusiasts , they talk, sometimes with the help of a car designer, about new cars but also of vintage cars from the 60/70/80s. Well done again
I never was a fan of drop tops so I’d pick the RF model if I was buying. I’ll have to go back to your video last month on the RF to compare the two. Hey, you could have done that. 🤔 Good job Joe! 👍🏻👍🏻🇺🇸
vnq I heard on reddit saying there’s no Carplay or Android auto when you purchase your 2019 MX5 out of the dealer. The CX5, new Mazda 3 and Mazda 6 only one that comes carplay. But there’s a firmware available for MX5 to activate Carplay but you need to make sure that MX5 has the new Hub that support Carplay. The hub is available on dealer or ebay. The reason why Carplay didn’t come on 2019 MX5 is because they are backorder.
Great review on the Mazda MX-5 Joe. I absolutely love the MX-5, I would by this car any day but maybe in a different color or maybe the same. Thanks Joe.
Great review. I think you're the only one who did a Mazda Miata sport. The wheels don't look too small. I think the daytime running lights are not LEDs but for 2019 I don't know if that's the case. The sport is a great Buy. I rather have a 2019 sport than a pre 2019 club or GT for a similar price.
I love them. Small, fast, light, just what u need. I rented one for 2 weeks, the hard top convertible. It Def was a life changer. Gonna be my next car for sure.
I was lucky to test drive the new Miata a little while ago . I loved everything about it. I think Mazda really went back to their roots and made it light and small. The 2.0 L works just great plenty of power for my needs . It was kinda tricky to get in and out but I blame it on me for not working out lol. To me it's the best looking miata and the red color in the sun looks stunning. In my opinion the price is a little bit on the expensive side. Other than that a two thumbs up .
I have a 2019 RF GT GT-S. Two things, I would like, is a flat bottom steering wheel, and heads up display. Let people know, the 12 volt power supply is , deep under dash the passengers side. And I love my shiney RED go kart. Miles of Smiles!
Really nice MX-5 and review Joe. I like the looks of the RF model just a tad more though. With that retractable targa roof it looks like a more expensive sports car. Do you get a commission when someone comes in and mentions your name when buying a Miata there? Eventually, I would want to check out installing a turbo for a little more kick from that engine. Great job, as usual, thanks, keep em' comin'.
Looks like a fun little car. Now that I live in Phoenix I’m tempted . Definitely the best color ! Also a lot of other automakers could learn a lesson from Mazda on what an engine bay should look like ! Stop covering them in plastic! Hello Ford see this? The only thing I’m not a big fan of is the display screen that looks like it popped out of the dash. A lot of companies use them , just hate the look. Great review thanks!
The cup holder can clip onto both sides bc it's the exact same as the RHD models. Leather seats won't "cook your tush" if it had heated/ *cooled* seats
Best fun affordable car mx5ND heavier, yes! But looks and feels more premium, has less road noise, better for extreme climates, and the targa mechanism is breath taking.
Joe, does the Sport cut it without the LSD or Billstein dampers and other goodies found in the Club and GT? I’m looking to buy soon but I’m torn. The higher trims are great but do I really need all that performance for spirited street driving? I have a 2019 VW GLI with LSD and it works great with FWD putting down the power. This will be my weekend car and don’t want to go overboard on features I really don’t need. I am agonizing over this, appreciate your help and love the channel!
Raiti your a genius at 1 take reviews!!! You know your shit and educate yourself before hand about the vehicle. You’re busy with these daily reviews don’t forget about date night with the wife!!!
You mentioned that the S2000 was better in your opinion... how so, the shifter, engine, etc? You mentioned that you like the convertible better than the RF... why? Also did you notice a difference in the ND1 vs ND2 engines? Does the updated engine rev better? Does the extra 700 or so RPM make it a lot more fun to drive? Basically is the ND2 worth the premium over a used ND1 in your opinion?
Sounds like I need to do a second video! lol The engine, and shifter have an overall better feel to them. The shifter engagement is better with shorter throws. The engine in the S2000 pulls harder. I like the simplicity of the convertible. Less weigh to have to deals with. I say go or the ND2.

I’m waiting to take delivery on my Club model next week .. I think he was mistaken on the Apple Play being included. I had to pay extra to get it installed at the dealer..
If other than the MX-5 Mazda produced nothing but crappy vehicles (and that's not the case), the company's existence would still be justified by the Miata alone. Kudos to Joe for the brief history lesson linking the MX-5 to classic British sports cars like the generations of the MG, Triumphs, and the Austin Healey 3000, among others. And kudos to Mazda for resisting the calls to install a larger engine (e.g. their 2.5L turbo four banger) or a turbocharger for the current engine that would add weight and upset the balance of the vehicle. No vehicle is perfect; design, engineering, and actual production are exercises in balancing priorities and reaching compromises. Given its mission, the Miata achieves an almost perfect balance among competing priorities. Living in the Pacific Northwest where the reputation for rain is overstated but the reputation for overcast cool gray days is not, I'd probably opt for the RF version of the MX-5. The roadster is undeniably more faithful to the tradition of a British sports car but the RF is a very clever engineering exercise with few penalties in terms of weight and open air driving. Further, I'm someone with a wife, a daughter, and a big dog. I'm love them all and most of the time I prefer to include at least two passengers when I go for a drive. My GTI is exceeds that minimum and the MX-5 would require disappointing at least two of them. Perhaps when the kid leaves home and the dog dies I'll be able to reconsider. Otherwise, what's lacking in the Miata? Just one thing as far as I can tell. C'mon Mazda, minimalism is one thing but how about cutting a hole in the dash and adding a true glove compartment. I could cope with the Mickey Mouse cup holders but even a tiny glove compartment would be a welcome addition.
@@93mlo Did I say a "big" glovebox? I said "even a tiny glove compartment would be a welcome addition." As for insurance and registration papers, I can imagine being stopped by a police officer and being asked for my registration. "Just a minute officer, I have to reach around to the compartment between the seats to retrieve it. I promise I'm not reaching for a gun..."
@@93mlo Ah, come now, my friend. It was meant as a semi-humorous comment from a middle age white guy who doesn't have to worry about it either. But as numerous examples have demonstrated that's not always the case for drivers of all skin complexions or by all police officers. More importantly, I still don't see the objection to providing easily accessible storage in a small glovebox placed under the dash. I'm not suggesting the MX-5 should rival an SUV in cargo capacity or that the trunk should be the size of a midsize sedan. I'm simply saying that a bit more storage would eliminate the persistent challenge of trying to figure out where to put some small items.... You know, like my gun. :) And while we're at it, who appointed you to decide that "All you should have in a glovebox should be insurance and registration period." Is that a condition of MX-5 ownership I wasn't aware of? I keep several other documents in my GTI's glovebox including passes to state and national parks, a small notebook, and my owner's manual. Is that OK with you? And then there's the obvious point. Even if all one should keep in a glovebox is "insurance and registration," the Miata doesn't even meet that requirement. If there is some actual reason for not providing a glove compartment, a feature of practically every vehicle I've ever driven, I'd love to hear what it is. I'm fine with Mazda making only minimal accommodation for the insatiable "thirst" Americans have for cupholders but a glovebox doesn't add weight or take up space needed for other purposes. As I think I demonstrated in my original comment, I'm a huge fan of the MX-5 but that doesn't mean that it, like any vehicle, is perfect.
Wow - just a tick under 80 mph on Enterprise Road in Clearwater at two different points in the video. I would have been pulled over and given a Careless Driving citation at the very least!! I was nervous for Joe just watching at those points in the video.
Decent daily driver? I'm either getting this or a new Honda Type R. Type R seems more practical, but this looks good as well , fun to drive, and a convertible.
Hey Joe! Another great video, big fan! So you sold me on a 2020 Miata! Can you do a video comparing the base sport vs club vs gt? Exactly how much better, ride wise, are the higher trims? Can I still have fun with a base model and how much am I gonna regret not springing for the club’s LSD, etc. or comfort/amenities of the gt?
I'm not sure if the connecting rods are actually "beefed up". They were made lighter in order to allow for higher rpm. They might actually be even less strong than previous generation connecting rods wich is a concern to tuners as the old connecting rods were already the weak link as far as pushing high hp.
One day if I can afford a fun weekend car, this will be it. Also, aside from a few Mercedes that I've seen, and maybe a Bentley or something, Mazda has the best paint in the automotive industry
Joe if the Lone Ranger bought one he would want a Tonto cover! Yes give it a shark fin antenna! I would ZONK it since it doesn't have a CVT!!!, JUST KIDDING. A crime to have an automatic in a car like this!
My garbage nothing but electrical, computer, and mechanical problems since brand new Volkswagen Passat TSI Engine gets only 174 horsepower, and 184. torque. Horrible Turbo lag. APR TUNE lied to me and will never have an ECU tune for my vehicle.
Sure keep hitting the rpm redline before the break-in period. That should be great for the longivity of the engine. Why do car dealerships keep lending new cars to youtube reviewers?
yea idk. I know I wouldn't hit redline during my test drives. And I also know that I would not buy any red miata from Ferman Mazda any time soon. lol...
Hi Zach! Great question! With the new changes with the engine the gap has closed up big time. The S2000 experience is a little more invigorating but the Mazda is so much freaking fun!
Not sure if anyone noticed but this is the ONLY review of a sport model. Thanks Joe for showing people all the fun you can have with about 25k!

Thanks for sharing that input and perspective Stephen. You brought up some great points!
Why do you need a big compartment glovebox? All you should have in a glovebox should be insurance and registration period.
@@stephenhendricks103 stop it , I've been stopped by cops in my ND and they have never reacted that way here in San Diego or LA.
And while we're at it, who appointed you to decide that "All you should have in a glovebox should be insurance and registration period." Is that a condition of MX-5 ownership I wasn't aware of?
I thought the exterior color comes over the door top this one doesn’t have it?
Those panels only comes with the upper trim levels (club and GT).
You need to play some Linda Ronstadt and "Blew By You" because you were whizzi'n past them other cars. LoL
very good job Joe!
Thanks Jim! That really means a lot! I appreciate your support!
WTF is the crooked raised letter sticker in the back under MX-5? I’d have to peal that off before it left the dealer.
Decent daily driver? I'm either getting this or a new Honda Type R. Type R seems more practical, but this looks good as well , fun to drive, and a convertible.
This car is a 100000 times more fun to drive!
Ivana Notyers The back of the Type R is dope you ding dong.
You live in my neighborhood!! Gotta love Clearwater
That is such a small world!
You are Awesome. Awesome show.
I'm not sure if the connecting rods are actually "beefed up". They were made lighter in order to allow for higher rpm. They might actually be even less strong than previous generation connecting rods wich is a concern to tuners as the old connecting rods were already the weak link as far as pushing high hp.
They have come a long way. It’s like you said it is easy to say that you are in a Miata
I wish I can own one of these with my 19 Subaru STI. I want both.. the struggle is real.
Great car. Only called Miata in the States - MX-5 in the rest of the world. Say Joe, does Tom ever get to have a drive of these cars, off-camera?
Dudes flying down those Florida roads at 100mph lol damn
What road is that? Even the straights are banked.
In Australia we got mx5 sp with 160kw in early 2000, this needs a snail
Oh wow, thanks for sharing that Ben!
You what? A 160kW MX-5? Which year? Where can I get one?
One day if I can afford a fun weekend car, this will be it. Also, aside from a few Mercedes that I've seen, and maybe a Bentley or something, Mazda has the best paint in the automotive industry
I think you hit the nail on the head about the paint job!
@@RaitisRides I drive a Subaru, so I know all about BAD paint 🤣🤣
I've been there and done that!
So would you get this "basic" version, or spring the extra cash for the Club or the Grand Touring?
The basic car is true to the original
i have a corvette c6 and i’m thinking about selling it to get mx5
Have you driven one yet?
No bro! The Miata is very cool and fun but...Bro C6 has 400+ hp and a fucking V8...that sound...
Mazda and Toyota are really killing it, this is a great sports car and reason why Honda will never bring back s2000.
Is there any cowl shake in the Miata?
No Apple play for Canada. Not sure about US.
We have it i the USA.
Joe if the Lone Ranger bought one he would want a Tonto cover! Yes give it a shark fin antenna! I would ZONK it since it doesn't have a CVT!!!, JUST KIDDING. A crime to have an automatic in a car like this!
To quote Mr Regular, it's the best
Hi Joe, what's your recommendation for fun driving around Orlando as a daily? New Miata or used 2016 GT350?
Any chance you review an S2000 preferably an AP1??
My garbage nothing but electrical, computer, and mechanical problems since brand new Volkswagen Passat TSI Engine gets only 174 horsepower, and 184. torque. Horrible Turbo lag. APR TUNE lied to me and will never have an ECU tune for my vehicle.
You should have blured the tach man
But nice video tho
Thanks for the feedback!
Thanks for letting me share it with you!
Raiti, Miata 2019 still don’t have AppleCarPlay or AndroidAuto
Nice! How would this be as a daily driver?
I think it would work greatly as a daily!
@@RaitisRides I daily mine all the time, yeah it doesn't have room for many people or items but the gas mileage and fun factor will make up for it.😁
@@RaitisRides Im torn between this and a BRZ .Does the Miata require 93 octane or regular gas ?
93 octane or higher is recommended. It’s a high compression engine.
I currently own a Honda civic EX but I want a Mazda Miata
Hey Joe! How much is this miata as it sits, cuz I know the GT is kinda steep
This one is a MSRP of $25k
msrp?
Sure keep hitting the rpm redline before the break-in period. That should be great for the longivity of the engine. Why do car dealerships keep lending new cars to youtube reviewers?
So you think when someone test drives it they are not exceeding break in procedures? You keep thinking! PS I help sell these cars for dealerships.
yea idk. I know I wouldn't hit redline during my test drives. And I also know that I would not buy any red miata from Ferman Mazda any time soon. lol...
Yeah that’s why I’d probably have to factory order it.. the dealer cars get abused
How is the experience versus an S2000? The new Miata is great.
Hi Zach! Great question! With the new changes with the engine the gap has closed up big time. The S2000 experience is a little more invigorating but the Mazda is so much freaking fun!
Fun factor is huge with mx5,s I will never sell my 91 just buy more,Cheer's joe
luvluca toni who Care's
wish you would do a jaguar f pace or f pace svr review
I am working on it Dale so please stay tuned!
I really want to own this car but i live in Canada 🍁😔
I live in Calgary Alberta and daily it all year. It is a blast in the snow with the best snow tires.
@@jonathanstoddard7712 Are you serious Jonathan, She's ok in the snow? I'm happy to hear that.
