  • I review the faster, more powerful 2019 Mazda MX-5 Miata! With a higher redline, manual transmission and the same light and fun handling, could it be the perfect affordable sports car? Let me know what you think of the faster Miata in the comments and huge thanks to Mazda for providing this car for me to review!

    When you can make an owner of a 480 HP car smile and giggle with your 180 HP car, you’ve done it right. Well done Mazda.

      @johnsimion2893 5 лет назад +4

      No, they haven't done it right. Not until the car can do all that AND the car is big enough for American-sized people to fit in without their heads touching the top and their knees touching the dashboard. The Miata is supposed to emulate the MGB but tall people could always fit in an MGB with no issues. The Miatas have gone through multiple generations only a couple of inches short of room and numerous magazines and videos have pointed it out to them, but Mazda seems to deliberately ignore the problem. Yes, you can do your own surgery on the seat padding, mount the seats lower, replace them ... but you shouldn't have to. It wouldn't cost Mazda a dime to fix the damned problem. They just don't want to.

      John Simion my buddy has a Miata. I’m 5’11 and I fit in it just fine. I’m pretty sure I’m around the average size for an American male. It would make sense for Mazda to cater to the majority of buyers (aka average sized individuals). I don’t think it’s a design flaw as much as a marketing tactic. Not every car works for everyone, you know?

    • @johnsimion2893
      @johnsimion2893 5 лет назад +3

      Well, every single response here missed the point or dodged it. Yes, Valentine, the Miata is indeed a small car. As I pointed out, the 40-year-old MGB has near-identical dimensions and I fit in that fine -- so what is your point? My post was about how TALL people fit in the Miata. Why, then, is Brandon talking about "fat" when "fat" doesn't make your head hit the top and your knees hit the dashboard? [and for the record, I'm an American, 6'-4" and 200]. Christian correctly notes that at 5'-11", he fits fine -- that's true, but is 5'-11" now considered "tall"? That's news to me. I'm 5" taller, but I'm not asking for 5" more space. Interesting marketing tactic to make your car unavailable to a large segment of the population. I'm asking for another inch of headroom and an inch of legroom. As I pointed out, it would be incredibly easy for them to fix, and there are too many web threads identifying the problem for them to be unaware. Hence I can only conclude that Mazda either just doesn't listen or doesn't care. And that's their privilege. But when a 40 year old car with near-identical dimensions can fit American sized drivers and the Miata can't -- please don't tell me how "great" they are and how they've "done it right."

    One of my favourite reviews done by you that I'll be coming back to watch in several years time - alongside TheTopher's POV video he has done with the 2019 ND MX-5. Only few things that I'll point out:
    1. Considering that most people use portable devices to listen to music nowadays, I think its alright for Mazda to ditch the CD system, considering the fact that this 2019 MX-5 costs a tiny bit more than the 2018 yet comes with a host of engine upgrades, which aren't a cheap thing to do for a manufacturer.
    2. Whilst I completely agree that the backup camera looks out of place, I think I'll be fine by that because the numberplate region would be too low for the camera to see oncoming objects - Having said that, people should learn to drive better in a small car like the MX-5 if they happen to rely too much on a backup camera!
    Having said all that, great work!

    • @MattMaranMotoring

      Thanks Richie! Yeah not having a CD player wouldn't bother me since I rarely use them, but I know there's still a few people that really like them so that's the only reason why I mentioned it.

    Never have I clicked on a video on youtube this fast Matt! I hope Mazda Global post this video on their site + socialmedia because the way you convey your emotions is so authentic. I also hope Mazda give you a percentage to every MX-5 they sell too (even a tiny bit), after the people claim they watched this video. 4 cylinder or not, it sounds pretty darn good in my opinion - granted maybe the S2000 as a 4 cylinder has more of an edge to it but many people seem to forget that the S2000s costed significantly more money than the NB and NC MX-5s that were sold at the time; so considering the fact that this 2019 MX-5 is pretty close in performance to an S2000 really goes to show how well Mazda have progressed throughout the years (take note Honda, Subaru+Toyota). If you have the funds, I honestly think you should without doubt keep your Bullitt but also add the F Type and this 2019 MX-5 to your long term collection! I saw the photos of the 2020 Mazda 3 and I'm really excited about that car too, although I'm not sure about that thick C pillar and how it might ruin the visibility, and also the move to the torsion beam suspension from the multilink setup.

      Only thing that I think Mazda missed for this 2019 facelift would be getting rid of the circular shape on the tail lights and instead make it long and sleek - to get rid of its 'cutsy' image. But if that is a deal breaker to some, then they are idiots who don't understand that this car is incredibly fun to drive. Certain more fun than the 86/BRZ which happen to have roughly 20hp more

      Zachary Zarko well sure i agree but I’m a fan of moderation in all things, not attempting to balance out one extreme with another
      And SubaruWRXBoy is definitely the opposite extreme to the monotone supercar drivers you described. If that’s what you’re after/what you enjoy/what you desire out of car “reviews” then by all means do so
      That being said it’s a worrisome trend that’s accelerating at a blistering pace, these “influencer” types who’s credentials are simply making vlogs and having a youtube following and suddenly we’re calling them “reviews” / “reviewers”.
      This in reality is a guy making a video of himself enjoying a drive in a press car, and consumers are doing themselves a great disservice by allowing the lines between journalism/bias free objective reviews and “experience vlogs”

    Great review. I was looking at the Miata vs the Fiat Spider, leaning towards the Spider as I like both it's exterior and interior look more, but now with the additional H/P, it makes it a tough choice. Does the 19 Miata still come with a alternate red top (liked this version paired with gray?)

      Steve M Yes, the Black Cherry top is still an option. I have an 18 Machine Gray with it. Live the look.

    If I ever crash my Ap1 or if it ever gets stolen.... yup, ND2 Miata. Easy choice. 😍
    Nothing else comes close.. brand new, minty fresh and with a warranty to boot! (vs. a multiple ownership, questionable maintenance history, ex-riced or ex-crashed, 100k+ mile, super worn and tattered parts, over-priced S2k)

    Mazda could solve all the problems of the Miata if they just made it slightly bigger. Yes, I know that means more weight. But guess what, just add more power. It's really that simple.

    I hate how lazy some manufacturers are becoming with their infotainment screens. They just put it there. It looks so out of place.

    • @kevinhill3556
      @kevinhill3556 5 лет назад +2

      The placement is chosen to be close to your line-of-sight to minimize eyes or head down driving. The top of the screen is below the line if the dashboard so it doesn't intrude into your outside visual field. I think they'd be hard pressed to find a better placement.

      George Soto in the past here in Europe, Honda made an N/A i-vetc engine which reved to 8,000rpm and produced 200bhp. They stopped producing this engine because it would not meet the new European emissions regulation. Most manufacturers now turbocharge their engines to meet the latest emissions standards and to improve power output. Mazda have not gone down this route with the current MX-5 2ltr engine. Here in Europe this engine meets the current EU6 emissions standard and produces 182bhp. Mazda should be commended for achieving this. By the way, here in Europe all the latest Honda Civic range of cars are turbocharged. Hope this clarifies my previous comments.

    • @krayzie281
      @krayzie281 5 лет назад

      John Roskruge I get you but there’s ways around it to improve emissions my 2014 civic si does fine with emissions and I live in California the most regulated emissions place on earth lol with that being said there’s ways to better emissions for example my car only has one vtec on the exhaust cam and not on the intake like like most other Honda motors and no only that they have ceramic intake manifold with longer runners that help with emissions as well as an intergrated head which also helps with emissions not the ideal vtec motor to the Honda fan boys but at the end of the day it’s still producing 205hp and 170lb torque but yeah turbo charged is the way most car companies have gone but yeah still pretty impressive for what mazda has done but if that could squeeze out 200hp that would be awesome lol

    • @johnroskruge2752
      @johnroskruge2752 5 лет назад

      George Soto I take it yours has been modified to produce those figures, or maybe Honda supply different engines to your market. I have a 2007 Civic Type-R which I have owned from new. I love the Vetec engine, but Honda stopped making them due to the EU regulations. My wife has the new Mazda MX-5 and I am very impressed with this engine, 45mph is easily achievable and it’s very free reving.

      As with nearly all sports or "specialty" cars, resale value is not great -- which is good for buyers in the used car market. The early ND1''s are now dipping below $20K. In three years, the price of a nice used ND2 will be close to $20K. Also, the pricing for a new one starts at $25,600 -- everything you need is there except the higher-end sound system and the limited slip differential,, and you can get by without them or make additions, later.

    • @youcanrunnaked
      @youcanrunnaked 5 лет назад

      @@darkobelisk4076 Relatively cheap. Putting aside the FIAT 124, the only new car that offers a similar driving experience is the Porsche Boxster. Have you seen the prices of those? Not to mention, the TCO for a Porsche will drain your bank account. Keep in mind every reviewer seems to drive a fully-loaded model ND. MSRP for a Sport model with soft top and manual transmission is $25,600, and discounts and incentives are generally available.

    I recently bought a new Miata. Being forced to use the middle wheel to use navigation song selection etc is way more dangerous than touching a screen. As you scroll the wheel left and right you are forced to watch the screen to turn the wheel to the correct option rather than simply touching the icon that you need on screen. Not smart Mazda. I don't care what your statistics tell you I drive one everyday and it's way harder to use than the touchscreen would have been.

    I traded in my 2016 ND for a 2019, and this review is spot on. The added power is nice, but the power delivery is the star of the show. The new engine spins up much faster than the old one, the throttle response is even more immediate, and it pulls from 1,200 rpm all the way past 7,200 rpm, whereas the old engine redlined at 5,600 rpm, and was out of breath by around 5,000 rpm. The Mk.I was a sports car chassis held back by an economy car engine; the Mk.II is the complete package: a sports car chassis mated to a sports car engine. Speaking of economy, Mazda's engineers managed to deliver a hot-rodded engine that gets BETTER fuel economy than its weaker predecessor: in spirited driving I averaged 28 mpg with my 2016; in my 2019 I am averaging 31 mpg, and I drive it just as hard, if not harder.

The one thing i noticed t 30,000 the hard top was rattling a LOT! Im sure the drop fabric top will be MUCH more quiet because less hittin the wind! Of course, you dont buy a car like this for LEXUS quiet! Its VERY, VERY, VERY fun, and women just look like birds of PREY when you drive bye , yung and old ..LOL, SEXY on this car is a HUGE undertstement. Its like a 2020 Corvette in the miniature version!
