      Hey Youthman, I haven't finished the video yet. It would be nice to see something like this on a ALR screen like Slate and Black Diamond from SI. I've been waiting on getting a projector because I've found that while I have a light controlled setup with black ceiling and dark walls and all, at least 90% of the time I have to have considerable light in the room for my kids to play, or to talk with guests. Even if the lights are dimmed and not direct... I guess my room is the main TV watching space, and not ONLY for a theater experience. Only when I'm alone do I get to go full darkness. I'd love to see how the experience is with these in that use-case. Does a NZ series have the brightness needed to accomplish this? And how much of a subjective hit do you take when you do go full dark in the room with a Black Diamond screen or something.

    love the average consumer perspective on this video! my setup is in a multipurpose room where we play board games, workout, watch movies, watch tv, play xbox. can't black out every room just to get the "best" conditions. I went EPSON 5040 due to ability to have lights on and still see have a usable image, but lights off, change view modes.

    This was great! Thanks to everyone who helped make this possible. The rest of my comment isn't intended to be a critique; I just wanted to share a thought I had when watching this. I know that using MadVR for tone mapping to SDR allowed the older generation of projectors compete, but maybe next time you guys do this you can skip the external tone mapping and feed actual HDR signals to the projectors and see what they can do. I have to wonder if the latest projectors can do a better job of tone mapping; I hope they could since they should know exactly what their own capabilities are. A side by side with vs. without madVR with HDR source material on identical or almost identical projectors would be great, too. Cheers!

      @@jin5667 that home theater dude channel has a good comparison to the Sony 715 and NX line (forget the exact model but it was $8,000). The short version is the Sony has more detail and the jvc has blacker blacks. The piece missing for me is latency for gaming. The ONLY projector I have found acceptable is Sony at 27ms.

      @jin5667 2 года назад +1

      James Williams Thanks James. I agreed with that comparison. I currently own a JVC NX7 and a Sony 295es. Movie image wise, Sony is sharper, but JVC does much better on black level and HDR. Game wise, I certainly use Sony. I use JVC mainly for movies, especially dark movie. My question was about the new NZ line, doesn’t seem to offer much a difference from this shootout.

    Shame no one had an NX5 to add to the test, it's probably the closest in terms of price to either the 295es and 6050. Also it will be interesting to see a repeat test with hopefully the new LS12000B to see if it has enough of an improvement over the 6050 to possibly compete head to head with the likes of the 295es and the upcoming NP5.

    NX7 owner here and am super happy owning this model. I was originally tempted to sell it and grab an NZ8 which would likely cost way more. I AM on a 165” scope screen and I’m sure the NZ8 and extra lumens would be great but I might wait another generation of laser based models from JVC to see if they end up pushing the lumens any further. I run mine with the Color filter in place too so I’m tempted to disable that to see if it’s a lot brighter.

Now I'm building my first full home theater and this couldnt be more helpful, in my space a 100in screen is the max I can fit so this was massively informative. Need to keep doing research on how those more budget friendly work with a grey or darker screen to help with the contrasts because it really seems like alot of the higher end projectors come alive on screens I just don't frankly have the space for. What a great effort, thank you to everyone who made this possible.
    Screen size:
    If you've got 100" screens (because you can fit 2 of them in) but you want to be testing (for example) 130" screens, what would happen if you simply zoomed the projectors to project 130", and you left the over-spill hit black velvet? Sure you wouldn't watch a film like that, with parts of the image missing, but it would show you what those images would look like on a bigger screen.

    With all the opinions and voting thoughts I would have liked to see people say which one they would actually buy. Even those with the funds I am curious if they would spend for the laser vs non laser JVC or even the Epson.
    I guess my conclusion is the NX7 is a better value than the laser series being a similar image for less. The Epson 6050 or try to get the same 5050 for model even less will not have the blacks of the NX7 but WHOLE lot of savings and should still do well on a large screen. The optima is for your kids bright playroom, outside but would never hold it's own for an enthusiast on a larger screen or without the tone mapping boost it received.

      Spot on. You get 85-90% of the image quality at the Epson 5050 level and the law of diminishing returns kicks in pretty strongly after that. I can comfortably say in public that the price difference between the NZ7 and NZ8 were not worth it for me.

    Thanks for the comparison. I still feel peak projector for me in a batcave is the JVC x9000. I notice contrast much more than resolution and with MadVR I feel the contrast/HDR I get from the x9000 is unrivalled. Even in a batcave there's a zero sum game with contrast - you push the peak white too high and the reflections form the room wash back onto your screen, thus diminishing the contrast. I had quite the revelation when I stopped watching HDR stuff in high lamp mode, in low lamp the contrast appeared even better!

    Nice work. I only wish the white points had all been matched to D65 for peak white along with matching the brightness levels. I noticed the i1 display pro Spectro there. Would have been easy to do a quick 100 IRE D65 for each. Either way thanks for the hard work here. Good content as always.

    If you look at the native contrast of the pixel shift RS PJs (like the 420), they are significantly better than the native contrast on the native 4K JVC PJs. The laser PJs have better dimming which "may" level the playing field. Like the guys said, I really think combining external tone mapping and level matching on a smaller screen took away the main advantages of the laser JVCs. Going with a larger screen and not allowing external mapping would have changed it dramatically. I also think you have to factor in the benefits of laser over bulbs when buying. One thing I think would have been useful is to try the filter in the NZ8. Since you used a 100" screen, and the NZ8 seemed too bright when maxed out, then the lumen loss from the filter may have actually helped, plus you get a greater color gamut.

    • @Jagman1996
      @Jagman1996 2 года назад

      @youthman I should have mentioned this but I really enjoyed this video. I've watched at least a couple dozen of your videos and this was by far my favorite. The NZ8 was a PJ I almost bought. Now I'm not sure. My screen is 103" but I have some ambient light during the day. My plan was to use max lumens during the day and to use the filter at night for more serious viewing. I could also do a larger scope AT screen and really take advantage of it. That's just a LOT of work. Then again, I could get LGs 99" OLED... pricing may be similar to the NZ8... especially since JVC no longer allows street pricing but LG does. I'm also really curious what rec 2020 triple laser PJs will come out this year. I suspect I might wait 6-12 months to see how the market plays out.

    Kind of surprised the JVC beat the Epson 6050 that solidly. I prefer the 6050's brighter image and use that brightness to be able to engage my color filter for HDR color volume and coverage. (and for my bigger 150" screen) Many do prefer the JVC for it's blacks, but I didn't think that view was THAT universal, and it's not like the Epson has bad blacks, especially when you have the iris settings, tone mapping and filter set "right". Both solid projectors that fill slightly different needs and scenarios, so I expected the vote to be more mixed at least. When you factor in price, the Epson usually comes out ahead in a price for performance scenario too.

    I do wish the shootout didn't include MadVR, etc. Just straight out of the box and calibrated. The argument would be made that those lower-tiered projectors would be blown out of the water, but I think the whole point would be, does the difference in what your seeing correlate to the difference in what you would be willing to pay in price.
    In other words, not just which one is 'better', but do I want projector A at this price, or is it worth it to me to get projector B for that price.

      Ryan came up with the idea for the shootout during my initial trip and originally was wanting to do it within a few weeks. LOL. He ended up pushing it back a few weeks so we only had a month to put it all together. As far as projector models, I asked 90,000 subscribers if they would be willing to bring theirs to the shootout. The models we had at the shootout were the ones they were willing to bring. Now that we are making it an annual event, we have more time to reach out to brands to see if they are willing to provide their products for the shootouts.

    I was initially struck by the apparent silliness of running a $1,200 projector with a $15,000 video processor, but ultimately intrigued by the result. Does a madVR Envy ever really make economic sense, or is it strictly for folks without budgetary constraint? In other words, is there any combination of projector and external video processor that matches standalone premium projectors for less total spent on image? Is there a cheaper video processor available that would improve black detail on my venerable Epson PowerLite 2040, which incidentally now lists at double my original purchase price. As much as I would like to upgrade, it doesn't appear to be a great time to buy a new projector.

      @@Youthman in a professional environment stuff does sometimes get dropped. Obviously I didn't do it on purpose, but when you are rigging in a big venue on a deadline, things need to be heavy duty, and we use very expensive equipment built to commercial specifications for a reason - you can't have an item of equipment fail on you without warning, or be fussy.
      Single use screws into thermoplastic parts in cheaper projectors are terrible for durability and longevity in general. Christie is all metal to metal precision castings with drilled and machine tapped threads. It is tough enough to survive surprising levels of abuse and just keep on truckin'. I really do recommend Christie quite highly, for a reason. Ain't fragile.

      @@Youthman when looking at the cost of a unit, lifespan and durability cost loads to engineer, and may result in no improvement in overall image quality in an A/B test. Longevity and quality are correlated- - plastic lenses, poor thermals, moisture & dust tolerance, parts changing shape after thermal cycling, registration/alignment of optical path, service parts & manuals availability... this is why Optoma or Benq aren't found in a professional environment. Not so fond of Epson, either. They all work great when they're brand new, but I wouldn't spec them for control room or mission critical use, even in a low-intensity environment.
      Digital Projection, Christie, Barco... all no nonsense built to a spec not a budget, professional equipment from an independent engineering firm, top of the line. Panasonic, Sanyo, Mitsubishi, NEC, Epson, JVC, Sony, Hitachi, Samsung, Ricoh... same sort of basic performance and core components but simplified housing and assembly... the corporate plastic. It's cost-engineered pro-sumer equipment, high margin and far more freely available.
      Certainly for light use, and short term ownership - if you are buying to short cycle upgrade, you can minimise spend to cut the depreciation. Buy cheap, buy twice or "cotton underpants" is a buying policy loads of places.

      @Youthman  2 года назад

      Last thoughts from me.
      Again, I'm not sure why you keep referring to "professional environment" and "control room or mission critical use"... That is not anywhere close to what my channel is about. There is no doubt Christie and Barco make some the best projectors on the market but the VAST majority of consumers are working within a budget and are not capable of dropping $80,000 (for a cheap one) - $500,000 (or possibly more).
      As far as JVC and Sony only being good for "light use, and short term ownership", tell that to the countless owners of older models. The top JVC is around $15,000 which I would not consider cheap to the average Home Theater Enthusiast.

    The problem is you guys are making up excuses for the setup..we get that part but to claim the setup didnt have any effect on the results shows ignorance. Any savy projector owner knows that if you have bright walls etc it WILL affect the performance of the best projectors with highest contrast like JVC so while the guy at 14:45 claims that is not true that they didnt have problems telling them apart, he is COMPLETELY missing the point and unfortunately shows his lack of knowledge.
