Powaup Yea one of the issues I had is that the car seems to rather abruptly close them in off throttle situations. This was a real issue in the manual gearbox when upshifting. Less problematic in the DSG car.
Nick Busato That's interesting to know the valves operate differently depending on transmission, but yea I like my car much more with the valves open, eventually I'll get an exhaust and intakes and I think that will perfect the sound
In the DSG you are not lofting on the throttle, rather the small throttle cut is made via the ECU on the DSG car. Due to this the valves, as far as I can tell, stay open. This makes it sound a bit better, but more importantly keeps you on boost. The intake is of interest to me. A lot of people seem to think exhaust is the only variable in the way a car sounds. The truth is, as you are aware, the intake plays a massive roll. Most OEM's will try and tune out the typical turbo induction noises, so going after market on this car may make a world of difference. Post a video if and when you do modify your car! My abarth for example now sounds like it belongs in the WRC with all its whistles pops and bangs.

inchskater The big issue with engine swaps, ignoring the obvious plumbing and space requirements, is that you will fundamentally (almost always negatively) change the balance of the car.

It's different than our 2013 911 Carrera S that we traded for it but given the choice, we made the right decision - it's beautiful, powerful, aggressive and massively fun to drive hard! The double clutch is positively magical. By the way, our M4 nets out on the dyno at 478Hp and 503lb feet... M division is notorious for output greater than advertised!
I'm ok with the sound, test drove one and am looking at getting one. I also checked the M3 the other day as well, having usually prefered the look, guess my tastes have changed, prefer the look of the couple now. The DCT in this car is great, think this will be my fair weather daily commuter.

Habib Yahya The M4 cabrio has exactly the same ride height as the coupe. I think I had 3 people in the cabrio when I tested it and didn't have any issues. Thanks for watching!

Since the 1M that I feel the same about the sound..M5 included...nothing like the Turbo Mercs...or Audis.... It used to be the trademark of NA BMW's but now on the turbo charged era...they lost it.... which is a shame for enthusiasts. Great Review.
Yeah, we can leave that for out pal Chris Harris. It's very illegal where we're from, so we leave that for the track. And BMW Canada won't let us drive their cars on the track, so that's a bit of a problem. Still, we have some slidy segments coming up soon. Thanks for watching!
I think it sounds great , there is nothing wrong with the sound. it sounds different some people like it and some don't. I drive it everyday and its an amazing car and wait till u drive it in the track..
A note on the sound to everyone... when you start up the engine; t's cold, of course the exhaust is bad, and also if it's not in sport + mode, the valve are not open in the exhaust.
TheMidnightNarwhal There is sounding bad, and then there is sounding horrible. The direct injection combined with a cold start on this car seems to make the same sound of an old car breaking down as it shakes itself apart. The exhaust valve has nothing to do with this. Its just inherent to the engines design. Toyota/Lexus for example are well aware of how horrible DI sounds so they use port injection on start up. They still actively use some port injection under load to wet the back of the intake valves to prevent the carbon build up issues found on DI engines.
Thank you Brian. Great video as always ! How is it for daily driving? Is it a comfortable , quiet drive when your in the comfort setting? I don't know how accurate the sound in the video can be but judging by the video you barely had to raise your voice to talk. Seems like a typical German vehicle.
+DeMoNxxxFoX It's a great daily! Sure, it's firmer than a regular 4-series, but it's an M. I only complain about certain aspects of this car because its so good overall. I'm also a soft talker, in general, but it's reasonably quiet, plus they have to fake the exhaust sound, after all.
The M4 isnt a new M3? The M4 is a completely different car to the M3 - they are both produced. Why do you refer to this as a new M3? The only car that is no longer produced is the 3 series coupe which has been replaced by the 4 series coupe.
great review! on side note who ever was in charge of picking the colors for the new M3/4 should be fired. Austin yellow looks a like metallic puke/mustard. smurf yas blue, crappy sakhir orange/redish. Replace them with dakar yellow,mote carlo blue, and imola red please.
flexluis84 I cant say I am a big fan of that old colour selection. The modern Yas Blue is pretty special in person, and the Austin Yellow is pretty different. Just give me aston martin volcano red and I would be set. The Sakhir Red is pretty rubbish by comparison. Fun fact, I have been to both Yas and Cota.... I just need to visit Sakhir now.
I had a good look into it and you are totally right! If we have a chance to test the new M4 GTS I will be sure to write a small script about how the engine is NOT the n55 (block) like myself and other suspected. I do find it interesting that I prefer the sound of the single turbo (twin scroll mind you) of the n55 over that of this m4 twin turbo engine.
I have owned this car in convertible form since November 14. I can't recommend it. Get the M3 coup and keep it forever. Super disappointed. I wish I had kept my M3.
Film Makers MC Williams Soft top adds weight and more importantly creates a far less stiff chassis. Becomes a real issue with the suspension setup of a M4 when the chassis lacks the torsional rigidity to make use of it.
I test drove the C63s and preferred the M4 Competition package as a drivers car over the C63s (which sounded amazing) but for me the C63 was more of a luxury cruiser with muscle than a sports car. BMW fit a carbon roof where as AMG fit a panoramic sunroof. That says it all to me.

Trust me in person its pretty bad. Cold startup for this car sounds especially horrid.
